Strathallan News
Featured Speech Day 2026
We were delighted to welcome pupils, parents, staff and honoured guests, including Vice Lord-Lieutenant Alex Cairncross, to Strathallan today as we celebrated another remarkable year in our school community. A heartfelt thank you to our guest speaker, William Whitehorn OBE, whose inspiring address encouraged our pupils to embrace the winds of change as they look towards the future. Our Headmaster, Mr Lauder, reflected on a year of outstanding achievement across the school, celebrating the academic, sporting and personal successes of our pupils. Among the many inspiring stories he shared was that of Year 1 pupil Betty, whose selfless decision to give up her birthday presents in favour of charitable donations perfectly captured the spirit of our community. A special thank you to our School Captains, Farrah and Ben, whose witty and heartfelt Vote of Thanks stole the show and had the Speech Day audience laughing from start to finish. And to our Class of 2026 – congratulations. As you begin your next chapter, remember that wherever life takes you, you will always be Strathallians. A special tribute was also paid to Mr Paul Vallot, who retires after 39 years at Strathallan. From teaching Biology and serving twice as Housemaster to leading our clay pigeon shooting and nurturing our Eco-Schools programme, Paul has made an extraordinary contribution to school life and leaves an enduring legacy. Thank you, Paul. Finally, thank you to every member of staff, volunteer and supporter who helped make today’s celebrations possible.

A Life in Detail: GCSE Artist Natalia Earns National Recognition In a remarkable year, Natalia M, a pupil at Strathallan School, has been recognised nationally for her artwork. Her innovative and deeply personal portrait of her grandmother has already earned her the Perth Schools Senior Artist of the Year, first prize and the Members’ Choice Award at the Caledonian Club Schools Art Exhibition, and is now shortlisted for Best Senior Artwork in the 2026 BSA Supporting Excellence Awards. Natalia’s award-winning piece, titled Life in Detail, emerges from her GCSE Art coursework on the theme of Contrasts. The brief encouraged students to examine opposing or interconnected forces and to develop a personal, meaningful interpretation. Natalia chose to explore the tension between life and decay, focusing on the natural process of ageing not as deterioration, but as a testament to resilience, memory and identity. Her work involved a series of intimate photographic studies of her grandmother, capturing the textures, lines, and contours of her skin with meticulous attention. Rather than portraying ageing as loss, Natalia’s portrait highlights the depth of character and experience embedded in each wrinkle—a life lived, shaped by decades of work and endurance. The final piece is a 3D relief portrait that elevates the human face into a landscape of time, uniting youth and age, vitality and fragility, permanence and impermanence in a single, striking composition. Head of Art, Francis Glancy, praised Natalia’s exceptional technical ability and sensitivity. “Natalia’s continued success this year has been nothing short of exceptional. To achieve recognition at both regional and national levels speaks not only to her outstanding technical ability, but also to the depth of thought and sensitivity she brings to her work. Her piece Life in Detail is a remarkable example of this, an ambitious and deeply personal 3D relief portrait that captures both the physical presence and emotional essence of her subject with extraordinary skill.” Mr Glancy also noted the historic significance of Natalia’s success at the Caledonian Club, marking the first time Strathallan School has received such honours. “To see Natalia recognised by the Perth Schools Senior Young Artist of the Year award, the Caledonian Club in London, and now as a finalist for the BSA Awards, is a testament to her dedication and creative maturity. She sets a benchmark for excellence within our department.” Natalia, reflecting on her own artistic growth, said, “I’m really grateful to my teacher and for all the opportunities at school. This year was very rewarding and has helped me explore new ideas and grow creatively, which motivates me to keep improving.”
Perthshire Young Photographer of the Year Awards in Perth
Lily C achieved an outstanding 2nd place in the Senior category with her photograph The Painted Voyager. She also received a Highly Commended award for her additional entry, Monarch of the Moor. In the Junior category, Brooke B was awarded Highly Commended for her photograph Ears in the Wind. Speaking about her success, Lily said: “I was very surprised. I entered it for fun as photography is one of my hobbies. I’ve been interested in taking photos all my life, but recently I stopped because of time. This has really inspired me to take more again.” Brooke said: “I just loved the photo of Otto and was delighted to hear it was highly commended.” Many congratulations to both students on their success and for their creative eye and photographic talent. 3
David Barnes MBE
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of David Barnes MBE. For more than 42 years, David was woven into the fabric of Strathallan. As a Geography and Maths teacher, Ruthven Housemaster, Second Master, mentor and friend, he dedicated his life to supporting and inspiring young people, leaving a lasting impression on generations of pupils through his kindness, wisdom and unwavering belief in others. To so many within our community, David was much more than a colleague. He was a trusted guide, a source of encouragement and a friend who always took the time to listen, support and help others find their way. David's care and commitment extended far beyond our campus. Through founding the Strath Kenya Project and a lifetime of service to children and communities in Perthshire and Kenya, he changed lives and created a legacy of compassion and opportunity. In 2025, this extraordinary dedication was recognised with the award of an MBE - a fitting tribute to a life devoted to serving others. Perhaps there is no more fitting way to remember David than through the words he encouraged generations of Strathallians to carry with them throughout their lives: "Am I being honest? Am I being fair? Am I doing the right thing?" Our thoughts and prayers are with David's family and with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. David will be greatly missed and forever remembered as a much-loved member of the Strathallan family.

I’m so excited to play such a big part in the school next year and help make it a great year for everyone.” Billy B commented: “It’s a real honour. I’m looking forward to another successful year and supporting the school however I can.” Jess B said: “It’s incredible. I’m really happy. I think we’ll continue bringing the school community even closer together, and I’m excited to work alongside the other Captains of School.” Congratulations to Hamish, Corinna, Billy and Jess. Strathallan commended in Independent Schools of the Year Awards for International Student Experience We are delighted to announce that Strathallan has been recognised in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026, having been named among the schools commended in the International Student Experience category. The Independent Schools of the Year Awards celebrate the very best of independent education across the UK, recognising schools that provide exceptional experiences for their pupils both inside and beyond the classroom. The International Student Experience award celebrates schools that create an outstanding environment in which pupils from around the world can thrive academically, socially and personally. At Strathallan, international pupils are an integral part of our community, with young people from across the globe living, learning and growing together on our Perthshire campus. Our boarding community brings together a diverse range of nationalities, cultures and perspectives, creating an environment where lifelong friendships are formed and every pupil is encouraged to make a meaningful contribution to school life. At the heart of our approach is a belief that the international student experience should be shaped by the pupils themselves. Throughout the year, international representatives from across the School meet regularly to share ideas and feedback, with an International Prefect providing a direct link to the Senior Leadership Team. This ensures that pupils' voices help shape everything from boarding life and induction to cultural celebrations and social events. Over the past year, pupils have helped develop new opportunities specifically for younger international boarders, expanded the programme of cultural celebrations to include occasions such as Chinese New Year, Ramadan and Cinco de Mayo, and organised trips and activities that help pupils experience both Scotland and the wider UK. International pupils also play a key role in welcoming new arrivals, acting as mentors and helping them settle quickly into life at Strathallan. We are delighted to have been commended for our commitment to ensuring every pupil feels both recognised as an individual and part of a close-knit school community, while celebrating the diverse cultures and perspectives that enrich life on campus. Finalists in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards will be announced on 10th September, with winners revealed at the awards ceremony on 14th October.

The Hawfinch: Hot off the Press
The inaugural edition from Strathallan’s Hawfinch Press has arrived! Volume 1 of The Hawfinch will be exclusively available for purchase at Speech Day and via the Strathallan School Shop Here, the rare is surprisingly common. The hawfinch is one of Britain’s most rare and elusive creatures. Shy, remarkable, and seldom seen, it makes its home on our campus — one of only a handful of places in the country where it can still be found. It is a fitting emblem for The Hawfinch, Strathallan’s newly launched literary journal. Published by Hawfinch Press, Strathallan’s literary imprint, this inaugural edition brings together twenty-one pieces of rare and extraordinary writing from across the Strathallan community. Memories and myth, dystopic futures and imagined pasts, observations of the natural world and commentary on the one we want to build for future generations. Together, these pieces remind us that extraordinary writing is not defined by age or experience, but by the ability to see the world differently and invite others to do the same. Thanks go to our panel of student readers, under the guidance of Pupil Editor Emma K. The beautiful hawfinch illustration featured throughout this edition was created by Rose C, whose artwork captures the spirit of the publication: distinctive, thoughtful and deeply connected to the place we call home. We hope this first edition is the beginning of a lasting tradition that celebrates creative expression and inspires future generations of writers, readers and makers at Strathallan.
Munro Day
Our Third Form pupils headed into the hills this week as part of the Bigger Picture programme, making the most of Strathallan’s proximity to some of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes. Groups climbed Ben Vrackie and Ben Lawers, while another explored Faskally Forest and the River Tummel. Along the way, they developed valuable skills in navigation, teamwork and resilience. With mountains, forests and rivers all within easy reach of campus, learning at Strathallan extends far beyond the classroom.

Class of 2026
We were looking skywards for a special reason
Our Build-a-Plane aircraft returned to Strathallan, flown by current pupils and built by former pupils as part of the school’s innovative aviation project with Aero Space Kinross. For Holly C, it was a flight to remember: “It was amazing! I’ve never been on a plane before. Best experience ever! We even did a wing wave to say goodbye after circling round. It was exciting to know that students built the plane, and it flew smoothly! I’d definitely recommend it!” From former pupils building the aircraft to current pupils flying it, the Build-a-Plane story continues.
You may no longer be pupils but you will always be Strathallians. Valedictory Service was unforgettable, thank you for the memories.

A particularly poignant moment came as Strathallan pupil Hector C performed as the lone rooftop piper, playing Sleep Dearie Sleep - the lament heard at the funeral of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey. Hearing the piece resonate across the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in the heart of Her Majesty’s beloved Scotland, was truly moving. Congratulations to all involved for representing the school with such professionalism and pride.

The event celebrated the anniversary of William Soutar’s birth while also raising funds for the restoration of Sir Walter Scott’s statue on the South Inch, making it a truly special occasion for Perth’s cultural heritage.

Cricket A landmark moment for Cricket at Strathallan as our Girls 1st XI took on the Forty Club. Played in outstanding spirit throughout, the match carried a real sense of occasion. Director of Cricket, Brock Ditchmen, said: “Our girls absolutely love playing cricket and to give them more opportunities to play really high-quality games is invaluable. Already this season they have played against clubs, university teams and other schools and now against an experienced adult side in the Forty Club.” Here’s to the start of a fantastic new tradition. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
A Proper Game of Cricket We were delighted to host the renowned MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) for what proved to be a fantastic day of traditional timed cricket. The match was played in a wonderful spirit throughout, with both sides competing hard while embracing the values and traditions that make our game so special. After an absorbing contest that ebbed and flowed throughout the day, the match finished as a draw, a fitting result to a closely fought encounter. Most importantly, the boys had a brilliant day. Opportunities to play against the MCC are always special, and our players thoroughly enjoyed the experience, learning from the occasion and creating memories that will stay with them for years to come. A huge thank you to the MCC for making the trip to Strathallan and for contributing to such an enjoyable fixture. We would also like to thank all the parents, families and supporters who came along to watch and create a fantastic atmosphere around the ground. Days like these are what school cricket is all about.
A brilliant performance from our U15 Boys Cricket squad sees them through to the National Finals Day semi-finals after an outstanding 6-wicket victory over a strong Cults Academy side. A superb team effort full of composure, determination and quality cricket. Well done, boys.

Strathallan Tennis Serves Up Standout Half-Term Success 🎾 It has been a fantastic half-term for Strathallan Tennis, with success across multiple age groups, from school fixtures through to junior international level. Pupils have taken part in regular games sessions as part of the curriculum, continuing to develop and refine their skills before putting them into practice in inter-school competition. More than 50 fixtures have been played this half-term alone, giving over 100 pupils the opportunity to represent the school. Internal competitions have also been fiercely contested, and it has been brilliant to see so many pupils enjoying time on court, competing hard, improving and having fun. Individually, Strathallan players have competed against opponents from across the UK and beyond, achieving success at the Tennis Tayside Open, Edinburgh Open, Middlesbrough Tennis World and the East of Scotland Championships. The standout achievement came from Thomas D, who claimed the J60 ITF Lexus Junior International doubles title alongside partner Charlie W, securing Thomas’ first junior international title. Director of Tennis Tommy Ogilvie commented: “It has been a very enjoyable half-term. Thomas’ victory means four different Strathallan pupils have now won international titles over the last few years. I would put that achievement up against any school, academy or tennis club programme in the country. It is something we are all incredibly proud of and reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment shown by the pupils.”

Strathallians Alumni Spotlight From Strathallan’s corridors to the rhythm of the music industry, we caught up with Alex White to hear how his journey is unfolding... Alex White, Ruthven House, Class of 2021 Please explain a little about your current career role? I’m currently going into my final year studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Alongside my studies, I work as a freelance bass vocalist, performing as a soloist, singing in choirs and choral consorts. Through this I have had opportunities to sing with organisations like the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as well as be a soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Alongside this I have sung with the Dunedin Consort, ECHO Vocal Ensemble and am a member of the current 15th Genesis Sixteen Cohort. What was it like for you right after leaving Strathallan? Initially, it felt comfortable as I had a clear plan, including a gap year and a place at Durham. However, during my gap year I realised it wasn’t the right fit, so I took another year out and chose RCS instead—one of the best decisions I’ve made. What are you particularly proud of since leaving school? I’m most proud of getting to a stage where I can earn money from doing something I love. The music industry is highly competitive, so reaching that level of sustainability feels like a real achievement. Which skills from Strathallan have been most valuable? Boarding taught me independence and self-sufficiency, as well as concentration and focus. I also developed strong communication skills and learned the importance of being well-rounded and respectful of others. Were there any influential subjects or teachers? There were so many supportive teachers who I could talk to openly. Key influences included my housemaster Ian McGowan, Miss McBain, Rev Wiley, David Barnes, and the Headmaster, Mark, all of whom helped shape my outlook through meaningful conversations. What advice would you give to current Strathallan leavers? Be comfortable feeling uncomfortable, because growth comes from pushing yourself. Work hard, embrace opportunities, and most importantly, believe in yourself and your abilities. And finally, strive to become someone your younger self would want to look up to - it’ll remind you of where you have come from and make you appreciate the wins and losses through a wider and progressive lens.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT - Isla Cameron Thornbank House Class of 2014 Tell us about your current role and what your day to day looks like? I currently work as Marketing Manager at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, where I focus on both promoting events and supporting fundraising for the charity. Alongside this, I’ve founded my own marketing agency, Simply IC, which supports under-resourced organisations with marketing and communications. What was life like for you right after leaving Strathallan? I went straight to the University of York to study music, as I wanted to complete my degree quickly and begin working. Initially, I found the transition challenging, especially having so much unstructured time compared to school, but I adapted quickly and enjoyed the independence. How did you decide what to do after your degree? I knew I wanted to work in the music industry but not as a performer, so I moved to London and worked as a live-in au pair to support myself. During that time, I volunteered widely across concert halls and arts organisations to gain experience, which ultimately helped me secure my first fulltime role in arts marketing. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned since leaving? I’ve learned that saying yes to opportunities is key - trying new things helps you discover what you enjoy and opens doors you wouldn’t expect. What moments stand out most when you look back? When I look back, what stands out most is how much I grew as a person during my time at school. I developed confidence, discovered my interests, and began to understand where my strengths lay. Those years played an important role in shaping the person I am today. Which skills from Strathallan have been most valuable? The importance of hard work and making the most of opportunities has stayed with me. I also benefited from practical life skills taught by house staff, which helped build independence and confidence. What advice would you give to someone wanting to go into your field? Work experience is essential. Gaining a wide range of experiences across different organisations builds transferable skills and gives you a strong foundation, especially in a competitive field like arts marketing. What’s on the horizon for you? I’m focused on growing my business, but personally I’m also excited to become an aunt and spend time with my new nephew, which feels like a really special milestone.

U18 International Rugby Festival | Vichy, France Huge congratulations to our four 1st XV stars—Coel P, Hamish M, Finlay A, and Ben M—who represented Scotland U18s in France. Our Strathallan boys were at the heart of the action, contributing 16 points: • Tries: Hamish M & Ben M • Conversions: Finlay A (3) Scotland U19s in Italy The action continues. Former pupils Adam Williamson and Boyd Cooper played in Italy for a two-match series.
Ellis Anderson
Congratulations to former Strathallan pupil Ellis Anderson, who was presented with his Gibraltar shirt by fellow Strathallian and Head Coach of Gibraltar Rugby, James McCaig. Ellis qualifies for Gibraltar through his father and has earned the opportunity to represent the country in international sevens rugby. A proud full-circle moment for two Strathallians on the international stage. We’re delighted for Ellis and wish him every success in his international rugby journey.
The Strathallan pipeline remains stronger than ever: • Fin Ronnie: Returns from a highly successful U20 Six Nations campaign. • Aicha Sutcliffe: Named in the Scotland Women’s extended squad for this year’s Six Nations. • Charlotte Russell: Building on her Scotland U20 debut against England. All of these athletes are products of the Strathallan Rugby Academy, led by Director Andrew Henderson. “Having the privilege of working with ambitious young male and female players is a real pleasure,” says Andrew. “I work hard to build the foundations that support their game both during and after school. Seeing them achieve at such high levels is what makes this job so rewarding.”
