When you look back at your time at school, assuming that you do occasionally look back, are all your recollections happy ones?
It would be naïve to think that the only memories are ones filled with rainbows and butterflies! Sometimes school life can be a harsh playground, and not everything is as harmonious as we might have wished. But we got through it, didn’t we? We took the good with the bad and have hopefully learned and grown from all our experiences.
With the passing of time, we look back and pick out the memories we choose to cherish in our mental photo album. Usually, the better ones. Maybe there are some regrets, but mostly we think about the people and the interactions that make us smile today. I guess that is what we call ‘looking back with rose-coloured spectacles’.
This year, the school is 81, which means, as Old Scholars, we’ve had eight decades of looking back. That’s collectively a lot of memories! (Interesting fact: the age of the school is now exactly the same as the life expectancy of the Australian male. In four more years, the school will reach the average life span of the Australian female!)
Without overly dwelling on the past, it is useful to reflect on where we’ve come from, our shared life experiences, and how that shapes the way we think and act now. Let’s be grateful for the friendships, the kindnesses, and the good things, forgive the other stuff and use all of it to reach out and support each other and our loved ones. Let’s face it, in this crazy old world, we all need a little TLC.
During our recent SPOSA Week, Old Scholars from all generations were doing just that. At Founders’ Day, at the Boarders Dinner, at the Parents Who Are Old Scholars drinks, and more recently at Open Day. It was heartwarming to see our Old Scholars, some of whom got up super early and travelled great distances to be back at the school, sharing stories and positive vibes with each other and with current students.
As I sign off on my last Bulletin article as SPOSA President, I thank you all for your support for one other, for your past contributions to the life of the school and for being the wonderful people you are in our 80-year-old community. We are a special bunch, aren’t we? I’m looking at you all with Maroon Coloured Spectacles!

The year has kicked off with key events such as SPOSA Week and Founders’ Day, which continue to strengthen connections between the Association and current students.
2026 is a special year as SPOSA proudly celebrates 80 years of fostering lifelong ties between Old Scholars and the current St Peters community. A suitable occasion to recognise this milestone was during Founders’ Day when a procession of multi-generational Old Scholars walked through the heart of the campus toward the Chapel, through a throng of more than 2,200 students, a far cry from the College’s original 56 founding students. Among them were Old Scholars who graduated over 70 years ago, returning to see just how much the College has evolved.
In February, we welcomed graduates of the Class of 2025 back to the College as Old Scholars to celebrate their exceptional academic achievements at the annual St Peters Scholars Assembly.
A St Peters Scholar is a student who achieves an ATAR, or equivalent, of 96 and above.
With a record 70 Scholars in the Class of 2025, the cohort has set a new benchmark for academic excellence at St Peters.
I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank SPOSA President Llew Jones as he concludes eight years of service to the Committee in June. Over the three years I have had the privilege of working alongside Llew, he has been an absolute pleasure to work with—leading the Committee with grace, patience, humour and warmth, and giving generously of his time at SPOSA events and beyond. I would like to sincerely wish Llew all the very best; his contribution to SPOSA has been significant, and he will be greatly missed.
As we continue to mark a significant milestone, I look forward to sharing more stories and creating further opportunities to welcome our Old Scholars back to the College community.

SPOSA would like to congratulate our 2025 Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Joint Dux, Mulan Ma and Sylvia Du (both achieving an ATAR of 99.95), and our International Baccalaureate (IB) Dux, Ruby Sylvester, who achieved a perfect IB score of 45. The 2025 Scholars had the opportunity to add their name to the Scholars’ Wall in the Academic Hub before heading to the assembly to be presented with their awards by Head of College, Tim Kotzur. Our graduates have received offers to leading universities across Queensland, interstate and overseas, in highly sought-after study areas including Management and Commerce, Health, Engineering, Society and Culture, and Natural and Physical Sciences.
To the Class of 2025, our newest Old Scholars, we are incredibly proud and wish you every success in your future endeavours.
The Next Step Year 12 Completers’ Survey opened on 17 March 2026. All Year 12 Completers from 2025 will receive a letter from the Minister for Education inviting them to participate in this five-minute survey to help the College understand the different pathways of our graduates. This helps us to improve services for future students. All respondents have the chance to win a MacBook Air.
We ask parents, siblings and friends to encourage our 2025 graduates to complete the survey. The Queensland Government Statistician’s Office may also contact them by email or phone.

It was wonderful to welcome Old Scholar Dr Monique Beedles (1991) back to St Peters for our recent Pink Stumps Day round against Marist College Ashgrove. Pink Stumps Day is a community-driven fundraising initiative that supports the McGrath Foundation and raises money towards the essential work of breast cancer nurses. It is a tribute to Jane McGrath, the wife of former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath, who succumbed to the illness.
A passionate cricket supporter and proud member of our Old Scholar community, Monique joined families, players and special guest Tracey Bevan, Ambassador and Director of the McGrath Foundation, in helping set the tone for a memorable morning supporting the McGrath Foundation.

The Queensland Reds have secured young backrower Vaiuta Latu (2023) through to the end of 2027, following an impressive breakthrough season. The 20-year-old has quickly made his mark, showcasing his power, work rate, and physical presence in both training and match play.
Latu’s journey from the Reds Academy to the senior squad highlights his rapid development and determination. His standout performances, including a dynamic showing in Super Rugby AUS, have cemented his place as one of Queensland’s most exciting young prospects.
With his sights set on the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season, Latu is eager to continue learning, growing, and making the most of every opportunity at the top level. Latu, nicknamed ‘Vice’ by family and teammates, said he was delighted to have his future sorted for the next two seasons.
A fantastic achievement for Vaiuta and a great moment for the St Peters community. Congratulations from all of us at SPOSA.
Congratulations to Old Scholar Anna Bassett (2025)!
We are thrilled to share that Anna has officially signed a full Division 1 Basketball scholarship with the University of California, Davis. This is an incredible achievement and a testament to her dedication, talent and hard work on and off the court.
During her time at St Peters, Anna made a significant contribution to the Basketball program. She was named Basketball Player of the Year in each of the three years she participated, demonstrated exceptional commitment to her team and showcased outstanding leadership as Basketball Captain in 2024.
Anna’s success reflects years of determination and perseverance, and this next chapter in the United States is a fantastic opportunity for her to continue developing both academically and athletically at the highest collegiate level.
SPOSA is so proud of Anna and all she has achieved. We look forward to following her journey over the next four years and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes at the next level. Congratulations, Anna!

SPOSA Week again brought together Old Scholars and current students across various age groups in a series of fun and interactive activities. The week is designed to highlight to current students the significance of becoming ‘A Saint for Life’ and a lifelong member of SPOSA. It was especially meaningful this year as SPOSA celebrates 80 years of creating lasting connections within its community.
Founders’ Day Assembly united our community in the Chapel Forecourt as we marked 81 years since the founding of the College and celebrated 80 years of St Peters Old Scholars Association (SPOSA).
A moving highlight was the guard of honour formed by multi-generational Old Scholars — symbolising the lifelong connection shared across generations of Saints. Participant, Captain Eric Beutel (1955), said, “It was like coming home.”
Deputy Head of College Mrs Lisa Delaney reflected on 20 February 1945, when a bold vision grounded in faith and perseverance became a reality. 81 years later, we give thanks for the foundations laid and the legacy that continues to shape St Peters.
Established in 1946, SPOSA now links more than 16,000 Old Scholars whose achievements, mentorship and generosity strengthen our College life and affirm that the St Peters experience extends well beyond the school years.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Old Scholars who joined us for Founders’ Day and shared our SPOSA week celebrations. Special thanks to SPOSA President Llewellyn Jones
(1983) for his thoughtful Founders’ Day address. Also, to SPOSA Secretary Anne Fulton (1988) for her beautiful vocal accompaniment to the Symphonic Winds and Chorale’s evocative performance of ‘Riverside Overture’ by Robert Sheldon.
Students were reminded that they inherit a legacy built by those who came before them — a tradition of scholarship defined not only by academic success, but by character, compassion and purposeful lives of service.
Through creativity and hands-on activities, our youngest students were able to connect with SPOSA’s history in a way that was both meaningful and fun.
Creativity was on full display in the Lower Primary Library as our youngest students took part in a paper doll crafting session, which proved just as popular as last year’s.
Around 25 enthusiastic students joined in the fun, carefully crafting their own paper dolls with pre-cut St Peters uniforms and soft wool for hair, which were later proudly displayed along the library wall.
Beyond the craft table, the activity also offered a hands-on introduction to the story and legacy of St Peters. Through this, the students were able to connect with SPOSA’s history in a way that was both creative and fun.
The SPOSA cupcake giveaway once again proved to be a great way to start the week of SPOSA-themed activities and connect with our Year 12 students. During their morning tea break, students stopped by the SPOSA Café to collect a specially made cupcake featuring the SPOSA logo and take part in a quick challenge — answering the question: what does SPOSA stand for?
This simple initiative created a fun moment of engagement with our senior students while also reminding them of the important role the St Peters Old Scholars Association plays in keeping the Old Scholar community connected long after graduation.
A special thank you to Row Lester (1991) and Cassandra Sun (1991) for their help on the day and for supporting this SPOSA Week event.
The Four Colours Boarding Dinner started in 2022 in honour of the four boarding houses — Ludcke Mutze and Schilling (boys) and Cameron Herse and Finger (girls) — to bring the boarding community together once a term with a dinner and special guest speaker who is usually an Old Scholar boarder.
Having this dinner during SPOSA Week created a wonderful opportunity to bring past and present boarders together. Current boarders enjoyed great conversation alongside Old Scholar boarders Llew Jones (1983), Andrew Corkery (1995), Julie Ross (1969), and Karel Baum (1976).
Each Old Scholar shared a memory from their time at the College, offering stories that reflected the traditions, friendships and unique experiences that come with boarding at St Peters. It was a special way for current boarders to hear firsthand how the boarding community has shaped generations of students.
Thank you to our Old Scholars who took time out of their busy schedules to join us and help strengthen the sense of connection and community that continues to define the St Peters boarding experience.
This year SPOSA was included in the Senior School Assembly in the Dron Auditorium where students from Year 10 to 12 gather to hear from different departments throughout the College. Acting Head of Senior School Joel Butler led an engaging conversation on life after school with Old Scholars Charlie Hoare (2022) and Row Lester (1991). Asking thoughtful questions and talking about shared experiences, the discussion offered valuable perspectives to students as they begin considering their own pathways beyond school. Thank you to all (Charlie and Row especially) who contributed to and attended this session.

Following the assembly, approximately 40 guests visited the St Peters historical exhibition in the Performing Arts Centre before enjoying morning tea in the P&F. Thank you to everyone who attended Founders’ Day, especially those Old Scholars who travelled very far including a group of nine from Toowoomba, Harold Kowitz (1956) and Valerie Mason (1968) who got up at 3:30am to drive from Aubigny and Eric Beutel (1955) who came from Caboolture. It was wonderful to see you there.
The week concluded on Friday with the Old Scholar Current Parents Wine & Cheese Night. The evening provided a valuable opportunity for Old Scholars who are now parents in the College community to connect with one another. A special thank you to SPOSA President Llew Jones (1983) and Committee Members Rob Barber (1990), Row Lester (1991) and Simon Gideon (1994) for their support in ensuring the night’s success.
St Peters Open Day was held on 14 March, and SPOSA had the pleasure of hosting a stand and connecting with many Old Scholars who dropped by with their families. It was wonderful to hear stories from their time at the College, to watch them show their children photos of themselves from past copies of The Review and to see their amazement at the evolving campus. The excitement of welcoming a second or thirdgeneration St Peters Old Scholar is truly special. Thank you to Committee members Andrew Corkery (1995), Cass Sun (1991), Jen White (1996), Julie Ross (1969) and Karel Baum (1976) for helping on the day.
Old Scholars return to visit for Open Day, with the next generation of Saints
The annual football clashes returned in style on 2 March, with a new twist: for the first time, both girls’ and boys’ matches were played on the same day. With strong support from students and Old Scholars, it was a fantastic afternoon of football played in great spirit.
The Fady Ibrahim Cup is named in honour of a former St Peters staff member, Fady, in recognition of his passion and contribution to girls’ football from 1998 to 2017. This year, the St Peters Open Girls took on the Old Scholars in a lively and competitive match. The Opens proved too strong on the day, securing a convincing 5–1 victory and retaining the Cup.
The action continued with the David Brown Cup, where the Boys First XI faced off against the Old Scholars. In another entertaining contest, the First XI claimed a 4–1 win, meaning the Opens kept both trophies this year.
While the Old Scholars didn’t come away with the silverware this year, the matches were played in great spirit and showcased the strong connection between past and present students. Congratulations to the Open and First teams on their victories. Thank you to everyone who came along to support and to the Old Scholars who laced up their boots once again. Until next year!
Our annual tours of Ross Roy began this term with Year 2 students visiting the building as part of their ‘Where we are in place and time’ Unit of Inquiry and Christian Studies. Ross Roy’s hallways were abuzz with chatter and excitement as they explored the building, learning about interesting artifacts and the historical significance of each room.
SPOSA and the College love these regular visits from the students as it’s wonderful to see them connecting in such a tangible way with our past.
“Last Wednesday was lovely, so easy. It would be great to do it again.” Gloria Harch said.
It’s always worth getting together, even at short notice! There’s so much to catch up on. A simple train trip in March, starting at Brisbane Central and heading to Landsborough (picking up a few more Old Scholars at stations along the way), was a great success and very relaxed. Morning coffee was followed by lunch, just a walk across the road from the station to the hotel. Thanks to locals Ivan Schindler and Ian Christesen for organising a Sunshine Coast regional gathering. We had a quiz and plenty of prizes, thank you to SPOSA’s new 80th Anniversary memorabilia. A special welcome to Russell Duparcq and a big thank you to our eversupportive partners Rob, Margaret, Stephen, Brian and now Dennis! Honorary Old Scholars’ status is in order! There were a few apologies with promises to be there next time.

On 28 January, there was an impromptu gathering of some classmates from 1976 at Tim and Linda Prenzler’s lovely home at Moffatt Beach.
We all had a fun time chatting about life’s experiences and regaling the group with tales from our time at St Peters. The upcoming SPOSA Reunion Weekend also featured in our many and varied topics for the day. I’m sure the 50-year reunion Golden Graduate group will have a brilliant time at the range of events over the weekend.
Recently, St Peters Lutheran College Springfield welcomed back members of the Class of 2016 for a small but significant reunion, with seven Old Scholars returning to reconnect with one another and revisit the campus where their journeys began.
From a graduating class of 25 students, it was wonderful to see familiar faces gather again and share stories of where life has taken them over the past decade. Among those who returned was an Old Scholar who travelled from Victoria with his partner and young child, making the occasion even more special and highlighting the strong connection many of our graduates continue to feel with the College.
The evening offered a chance to reflect on the many different paths taken since graduation. The group represented a diverse range of professions and pursuits,
including a lawyer, a member of the Australian Defence Force, and a paramedic student, along with others progressing through their own unique career journeys.
While there was plenty of reminiscing about school days, the reunion also gave the group an opportunity to see how the College has grown and evolved. Walking through the campus sparked memories of their time as students while also showcasing the many developments and improvements that have occurred since they graduated.
St Peters Springfield always values the opportunity to welcome Old Scholars back to campus, and it was a pleasure to host members of the Class of 2016 as they revisited their school community and celebrated the friendships and memories that continue to connect them.
Russell Spies was the eldest son of Edgar and Edna Spies and grew up on the family farm in the Greenwood district near Oakey, where he worked alongside his brothers, Gregory and Jeffrey.
Russell was able to attend St Peters on an academic scholarship. A fine athlete, this was his first opportunity to participate in team sports. He played in the school’s First XV Rugby Union for three years and the first XI Cricket for two years, captaining both in his Senior year. He also broke the school record in the Hop, Step and Jump in both 1960 and 1961. Russell was a prefect and an excellent student. He shared Dux of the school with Ron Holzheimer, obtaining all As and one B in his Senior public exams.
A state government scholarship enabled Russell to work in the Main Roads Department, while he studied for his science degree at the University of Queensland. Russell played football with UQ’s Under 19s premiership team, and in the Brisbane Church League. After university, he restricted his sporting activities to Warehouse Association cricket. He worked for Main Roads for 49 years.
During his career as a scientist in an engineering firm, Russell worked mainly in the road materials area. This involved
soil and aggregate assessment, including the introduction of neutron density meters, concrete product testing, asphalt and bitumen testing and the introduction of quality assurance into materials laboratories. Over the years, he represented the Queensland Main Roads Department in many committees across Australia, including Standards Australia and State Road Authorities. One welcoming challenge was chairing and steering an Australian-wide committee of multi-user interests (producers, contractors and academics) in the control and utilisation of polymer-modified bitumen and rubberised asphalt.
Russell married Margaret in 1968, and they were blessed with one son, Peter, and a grandson, Thomas. He married Patricia (Trish) in December 1990. They resided in the Samford Valley for 26 years until retirement, after which they moved to Murrumba Downs. Russell died from leukaemia just short of 83 years of age.
Gertrude Katharina ‘Trudy’ Leggett (Hermann 1951), a beloved St Peters Old Scholar, lived an extraordinary life marked by resilience, faith, and unwavering devotion to family. Born in New Guinea in 1931, her childhood was shaped by war, displacement, and illness, yet she met every challenge with quiet determination and strength. Trudy embraced hard work and service with grace — from her years at St Peters and her nursing career in Brisbane, to life on remote plantations and later as a pioneering cattle property

matriarch at Helenslee, 200kms southwest of Townsville. A devoted wife, mother of six, and cherished grandmother, she created a legacy rich of love, generosity and tradition, always making others feel welcome, valued and cared for. Remembered for her quick wit, resourcefulness and deep kindness, Trudy’s life leaves an enduring imprint on all who knew her.

As a St Peters Old Scholar Association (SPOSA) member, you are part of a legacy that has lasted 80 years and counting. We are so lucky to be part of such a vibrant, active and supportive community.
SPOSA is a community-focused group that enables our Old Scholars to maintain a link to old friends, network with over 8,000 other members and give back to the school community. SPOSA is led by an elected committee of 15 representatives who shape the direction of your Association.
A vital part of our Association’s operations is our Annual General Meeting, which will be held during Reunion Weekend on Sunday 14 June 2026 at 11:00am in the Centre for Learning and Innovation (CLI). This important event provides a snapshot of what your Association has achieved in the past year and what we can look forward to in 2027. Our President and Treasurer will present their reports and elections will be held for Executive Committee positions. We invite you to play a role in the future of our strong and proud Association by putting forward your nomination. This is your opportunity to contribute.

Nominations for the positions of 2026/2027 President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Committee members should be received by Amanda Osborne, at least seven days before the AGM (14 June). In the event that insufficient nominations are received prior to the AGM, nominations may be accepted from the floor.
