SPYC Members...

We are rapidly headed toward the Summer season. This means our regatta schedule will slow down, but overall activity at our locations will not. I hope you were able to enjoy some of the great events put on in April. Easter weekend saw the Club bustling with both the Bunny Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt for the children and the Champagne Brunch for the adults. All in, our always dedicated and talented staff hosted more than 1,100 covers that weekend.

Our Owner’s Representative, along with Flag officers, BROC Chairman Jeff Howells, and management, were part of the first of several planning sessions to set clear direction and expectations as we move through the Schematic Design phase of our building replacement project. There will be additional sessions through May and June.

The St. Petersburg Vintage Motor Classic came back to Straub Park on April 12th. With more than 250 vehicles on display, this is always a great day to look at “toys” and mingle with friends. Regrettably, I was not able to partake as much as I would have liked, as I was in class earning my recertification from the Safety At Sea program. Speaking of safety, the 53rd edition of the Regata del Sol and Sol will set off to on May 1st. I look forward to sailing in my sixth event in this series, and look forward to seeing many of you on the island of Isla Mujeres; as we celebrate the long-standing friendship between St. Petersburg and Isla Mujeres the first week in May.

May 1st will be the 1950’s themed Annual Street Party, plus the Annual Watch Party for the Kentucky Derby on May 2nd. I also encourage you to come out for our Junior Sailing Yachting Recognition Awards on May 29th, where we will celebrate the many accomplishments of our Junior Sailing program. Also, don’t forget to make your reservations for the Mother’s Day Brunch on May 10th.

On June 13th we will be hosting a Maritime Enforcement Appreciation Day at the main docks, where marine units from the Coast Guard, Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Fish and Wildlife, and the St. Petersburg Police Department, to name a few, will have their assets on display, and officers from the different agencies will educate on their missions and services. Many thanks to Joe Kefauver and Coast Guard Liaison team for setting this up.

I also hope you have had the opportunity to review the report outlining the main conclusions we were able to draw from the member input sessions hosted back in February. Management is now working on implementing the operational improvements identified.

Additionally, management is in the process of integrating recommendations from Strategic Consulting Solutions, a firm that conducted a comprehensive review of our food and beverage operations. Their analysis emphasized improving profitability, ensuring consistency, and adopting best practices observed at other clubs. These recommendations will be implemented over the coming months as well as incorporated into the planning phases of our new build.

We clearly have a lot of different improvements, projects and events ongoing. It is truly gratifying to see the number of professionals and volunteer members working in a synchronized way to continuously improve the Club, and the experience we all enjoy by being part of this community. I am thankful to all members who contribute their time and talent. The future of our Club is bright and exciting! I look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks, be it by the pool, at the Tiki, or at one of our other venues.

We encourage our members to bring guests to the Club. Please note that the same guest may visit the Club two (2) times per month, or a maximum of twelve (12) times per year. If they would like to come with you more than that, we will invite them to become a member.

From our Member Sessions, we confirmed that members are looking for more casual and outdoor dining options—spaces that are welcoming for both adults and families. There is also a strong desire to refresh and brighten the Club while preserving its rich heritage, all while maintaining a conservative approach to cost and financing and keeping members fully informed throughout the process.

The New Downtown Clubhouse Team continues to work closely with our Owners Representative, Construction Manager, and Architect on the next design iterations, with a key focus on the project’s efficient design and cost. In addition, efforts are ramping up to evaluate the best solutions for interim spaces and associated operating cost assumptions. Please stay informed by reading Smooth Sailing, visiting our new website SPYCNext100.org, and attending upcoming sessions of “Leadership Listens".

Why is the Club considering building a new clubhouse instead of renovating the existing one?

The downtown clubhouse has seen many renovations over the years, creating a layout that is not efficient for club operations, events or meeting the needs of the members. The structure is also at risk from storms due to its elevation. Renovating the club within its current footprint would not protect against flooding risk brought by hurricanes and strong storms. Additionally, much of the current facility, its components, and equipment have reached their useful life with the need to commit millions of dollars in replacement and renovation projects.

How will the new clubhouse affect the Club's long-term financial stability?

It is the Board of Director’s fiduciary responsibility to maintain the long-term financial stability of the club. At no point will the Board recommend any actions that risk the financial stability of the club.

The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation (SPSF) continues to make a meaningful impact by expanding access to sailing and supporting the next generation of athletes and leaders. Over the past year, the Foundation has proudly awarded several grants to both youth sailors and valued community partners, reinforcing its mission to grow the sport while strengthening connections throughout the community.

Through SPSF support, youth sailors have been able to compete at both national and international levels, representing St. Petersburg with skill, determination, and sportsmanship. These opportunities not only elevate their performance on the water but also build confidence, discipline, and lifelong skills that extend far beyond sailing. In addition to supporting individual sailors, the Foundation has deepened its commitment to community partnerships.

Continued collaboration with Warrior Sailing provides lifechanging experiences for veterans, while partnerships with Academy Prep help introduce young students to the sport and the many lessons it offers.

ST. PETERSBURG SAILING FOUNDATION: EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY ON AND OFF THE WATER

Looking ahead to Summer 2026, SPSF is excited to welcome a new partnership with the Shirley Procter Puller Foundation’s Master Scholars Program, further expanding access and opportunity for local youth.

A major milestone for the Foundation is its selection as the charitable beneficiary for the 2027 Ocean Race St. Petersburg Stopover . This prestigious designation highlights SPSF growing impact and positions the organization on an international stage. The partnership will not only bring global attention to the Foundation’s mission but also create new opportunities to engage the community, inspire future sailors, and raise critical funds to support its programs.

As SPSF continues to grow, its focus remains clear: providing access, fostering opportunity, and building a stronger, more inclusive sailing community. Through its support of youth sailors and community partners alike, the Foundation is helping shape the future of sailing—right here in St. Petersburg and beyond.

The continued success of the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation is made possible through the support of its community. Those looking to get involved can do so in several meaningful ways. Contributions directly support scholarships, training opportunities, and outreach programs, ensuring that more individuals can access the water.

Sailors and families are encouraged to explore available programs and apply for support, while advocates can help amplify the Foundation’s mission by sharing its impact within the broader community.

To us, it means we’re doing something right in a fantastic setting where incredible cars, passionate owners, and wonderful people meet. It’s the sound of great music, the joy of supporting worthy charities, and the sight of smiling faces everywhere you look.

We love seeing our diverse crowd of spectators chatting with car owners, swapping stories, and soaking up the sunshine; that’s what makes this event so special. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to our generous sponsors, our dedicated committee, and enthusiastic volunteers who helped make this year’s show such a huge success. You’re the reason our annual event has become a “can’t-miss” tradition!

Our goal has always been simple: to create a fun, high-quality car show featuring an amazing variety of vehicles in a beautiful, family-friendly setting. We’ll treasure the memories from the 2026 SPMC as one of our best shows since we began in 2002, and we’re already counting down the days to our 25th Anniversary on Sunday, April 12, 2027. Ladies Beach Club

What a wonderful year for Ladies Beach Club! Our season was filled with engaging programs and shared experiences—from fashion and gardening to supernatural stories and Irish folklore. In April, we explored the beautifully renovated Beach Theatre , and in May, Tampa Bay Watch offered fascinating insight into our local waters.

Our special interest groups also thrived, with a lively Mah Jongg Tournament and a memorable Book Club outing to the home of a renowned St. Petersburg author. Each gathering was enhanced by themed luncheons, thanks to the exceptional PAG culinary and hospitality team.

None of this would be possible without our dedicated members and 2025/26 Board of Directors. Heartfelt thanks to Vice President Cyndi Deermount, Secretary MJ Davidson, Treasurer Leigh Howe, Membership Chair Helle Getz, & Programs Chair Mary Deininger. Thank s as well to Sharon Ogan - Mah Jongg Coordinator , Kate Passaretti - Photographer, Deborah Giaquinto - Invocations & Barbara Casey - Laughter .

As we look ahead, the new Board takes over in June 2026. We are grateful that all current Board members will continue, with the exception of Mary, who will be greatly missed. On March 11th, Co-Captain Audrey Orgo announced that we finally completed the Maggie Mug Regatta . It was a beautiful sailing day on Tampa Bay! Awards Officer, Barbara Mehaffey , awarded charms to the 1st Place Winning Skipper, PC Els Wiemken, and her crew, Jenny Roche. Marti Cochran sailed the first three races with Els and was recognized on the 1st Place winning team. Other Maggie Mug competitors who placed were 2nd Place Skipper, PC Dee Gill , with her crew Lori Hodges and Juliette Clark & 3rd Place Skipper, Suzanne Boohar, with her crew Jennifer Anderson & Pat Burrows .

On March 18th, since the winds did not cooperate, Marti Cochran & Britt Madigan arranged for a field trip to the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center located on The Pier. Salties enjoyed a guided tour of the facility and learned about Tampa Bay Watch’s mission to preserve and restore Tampa Bay waters. The Discovery Center is a great place to learn about the history of the waters surrounding St. Petersburg.

It’s that time of year again, time for the annual FWSA Rainbow Regatta Lori Hodges, this year’s Salty Sisters Rainbow Chair, announced that the regatta will take place on Monday, April 27, at the Clearwater Sailing Center. Along with an Opti and Clearwater Pram team, the Salties will be sending eight or nine sailors from our newly formed Sunfish team! Go Salties!!!

Cruising Fleet

March was a powerhouse month for the Cruising Fleet! We packed the calendar with 16 events, kicking off with a spectacular Clearwater Harbor cruise to see the Little River Band , flawlessly organized by Port Director Jaleen Hartney .

Mid-month brought a peaceful Emerson Point anchorage trip led by Art & Kim Hansen . Huge thanks to Art Hansen & Paul Murray for organizing comprehensive vessel safety checks, and to Bob Arrington for leading fantastic on-the-water training sessions! Our Daytrippers also enjoyed a perfect waterfront lunch at The Big Catch !

The absolute highlight was our annual Blessing of the Fleet on March 22nd. Under clear, lake-like skies, US Navy Chaplain Blaine Hall and SPYC Flag Officers blessed our twelve-vessel procession - including 'Heritage', 'Knee Deep', and 'Tattersall' - from aboard 'Talos' , graciously provided by Rob & Michele Matthes. Thank you to everyone who participated in this cherished tradition to officially launch a safe 2026 cruising season!

We also want to give a warm welcome to our newest members, including Steve & Nancy Westphal.

Woman's Club

It has been my privilege to serve as Woman’s Club President over the past year. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our Board for their dedication and service as we continued to grow the Club and warmly welcomed many new members into our community.

I’d like to recognize and thank Pam Haas, Robin Biloski, Michele Stella, Celesta Carter, Juliette Clark, & Lindsay Carter for their hard work and commitment to the Board. Their time, energy, and leadership have been invaluable to our success. As we wrap up the program year, we look forward to our upcoming “Passport to Pour” event on May 14th. Members will “travel the globe” while enjoying specially selected wines and cuisine inspired by Italy, France, and California. A special thank you goes to Lindsay Carter for the outstanding and engaging programs she has thoughtfully planned throughout the year.

Our April meeting featured a lively Bingo Night filled with games, laughter, prizes, great company, and a delicious dinner. It was wonderful to see so many members come together for an evening of fun and connection.

Saltwater Anglers

February’s Fish of the Month contest targeting Seatrout saw a record number of submissions, with John Arsenault taking the victory! March’s FOM Hogfish was a tougher challenge, but the group persevered with John Grazulis having the winning submission.

May’s FOM Tarpon is off to a hot start. If you would like to submit your catch, please see the flier and reach out to the email at the bottom of this article for more information on how to submit your catch! The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the downtown clubhouse. May is Prime Tarp Season!

• When to Fish: Late April through June. Peak action in MAY! Tarpon migrating along beaches, inlets & flats.

• Where to Find Them: Tampa Bay, Boca Grande Pass, Gulf Beaches & Passes (Skyway, Egmont Key). Follow the bait schools (mullets, threadfins).

• Gear Up: Strong spinning/casting rods (7-9ft), heavy duty reels (20lb+ drag), 50-80lb braided line, 60-100lb fluorocarbon leader. Circle hooks (7/0 - 9/0).

• Tips: Fish early morning/late afternoon. Use live bait (pass crabs, mullet, pinfish) or lures (large swimbaits). Be patient, setting the hook is crucial ("Bowing to the King").

Wine Club

The Wine Club is an intimate, member-based group devoted exclusively to wine education & exploration. It brings together individuals who share a passion for wine & a desire to deepen their understanding in a refined yet welcoming environment. Members experience thoughtfully guided tastings featuring wines from boutique wineries and thoughtfully selected producers, expanding their knowledge while enjoying meaningful conversation with like-minded enthusiasts. The club meets every other month on the first Thursday, for a total of six gatherings each year. Each meeting is a curated tasting experience rather than a traditional wine dinner. To encourage curiosity and open-minded discovery, wines & menus are intentionally not disclosed in advance. Riders Club

The Riders Club at SPYC is an experienced and passionate group of members who love traveling to exciting destinations together. Are you a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoys getting on the road and traveling to unique places of interest? If so, we invite you to join us. We usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a scenic ride that always includes lunch at an interesting spot serving delicious food. Future trips are in the works!

The Wing Shooter’s sent four teams to participate in the annual Giving Gators a Shot fund raiser at Sarasota Sporting Clays on April 3rd. Hosted by the Sarasota County Gator Club , this event raised close to $20,000 for University of Florida scholarships. Our members hit the targets in winning fashion, capturing 1st, 2nd and 4th in the team completion and also first place honors in individual performance, both men's and women’s. It was John Kollar’s perfect 50/50 shooting that captured the top men’s position and one of our guest shooters, Carol Colin , hit 43/50 in the women’s. The 1st place team members were Les Bauer, Carol Colin, Dave Miller & Gene Collins . The Giving Gators a Shot event is just one of several charity events the Wing Shooter’s support annually. Participating in an event like this brings a warm feeling to your heart. What could be better than spending a beautiful day with good friends doing something we all enjoy while helping college students cover tuition costs. TheGolf Club at SPYC has been busy with beautiful weather and many outings. Our February outing took place at The Bayou Club. Congratulations to our first-place winners: Ann Butterworth, Martin Morris, & Lou Virelli, who came in at three under par. Our second-place winners at even par were Bekah Rush, Ben Hansbury, & Mark Scribano. Third-place winners at one over par were Christi Scoffield, Jim Lavin, Mike Brentnell, & John Rogers. Our March outing took place at Eagles Golf Club, where some very cool wildlife was spotted! Congratulations to our first-place winners who scored two under par: Scott Boyle, Mike Walsh, & Jim Lavin. Congratulations to our second-place winners, at one under par: Josh Whetzel, Gina Bowden Pierce, & Suzanne Lavin. Third-place winners at one over par were Martin Morris, John Arsenault, & Paul Calhoun. Closest to the pin on hole four was John Arsenault. Our April meeting brought a very special guest speaker, Dr. Harold Shinitzky, a licensed psychologist specializing in sport psychology. Dr. Shinitzky has worked with Olympians and professional athletes, including winners of the British Open and US Open. His presentation, "The 15th Club: Mastering the Most Important Tool in Your Bag - Your Mind," offered insights into the mental side of golf. Attendees received a copy of his book titled “A Champion’s Mindset: 15 Mental Conditioning Steps to Becoming a Champion Athlete”.
