Join me for monthly in-depth conversations about Club activities, upcoming projects, and member priorities throughout the year. Please come out and provide your feedback on how we are doing.

April 16th - 5:30 pm
May 5th - 5:30 pm
Reservations NOT Required to Attend
February is now in the history books, and it was a busy month. The Club again hosted the Valentine’s Regatta on February 7th & 8th, with around 260 competitors. The following weekend the 37th edition of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series drew a total of well over 200 boats competing in numerous classes. Both of these events have saw higher participant numbers that in prior years – another testament to the superb work delivered by our Regatta General, Dr. Jody Abrams, and the entire race management team. We will be hosting several additional regatta events in March, with the Pennington Cup, Lightning Winter Series, and the 81-Bay Race coming up. Our sailing program continues to perform at top levels!
Spanning the final day of February and the first day of March, our downtown St. Pete was roaring with both Indi-Cars and NASCAR trucks. I hope many of you were enjoying the race related activities the Club hosted. Join us for the annual tradition of celebrating St. Patrick's Day on March 17th - the Club will again serve our complimentary corned beef and cabbage served with green beer. On March 22nd, your Flag Officers will join Chaplain Blaine Hall from USCG Sector St. Petersburg for our Annual Blessing of the Fleet. Please be sure to sign up with our Cruising Fleet Captain if you have not already done so. On both March 21st and 28th, there will be opportunities to have your vessel inspected for safety compliance. Again, please sign up if you have not already

The Building Reconstruction Oversight Committee continues their work, and in conjunction with Long Range Planning, conducted a total of fourteen member input panels in early February. These were conducted by a professional facilitator, Mr. Norm Spitzig, and the findings in his report will be incorporated as much as possible into the ongoing planning and design process. We had close to 200 members participate, and I thank you all for taking the time to voice your opinion(s). I only wish more members had taken advantage of this opportunity to provide input. For more detail on progress, please see the Master Plan Update on page 6.
Overall, activity at all locations remains high and through the first four months of our fiscal year, we are well ahead of budgeted performance. The Flag is thankful to the management team for keeping operations on track. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Respectfully, Christian Bergstrom Commodore 2025-2026

For generations, the pineapple has been recognized as a symbol of welcome, warmth, and friendship. Its roots as an emblem of hospitality are deeply tied to maritime history, when pineapples were rare and highly prized. Sailors returning from long voyages would bring them home as a sign of safe passage and goodwill, sharing the fruit as a gesture of celebration and generosity.
Within yacht club tradition, the pineapple continues to carry this meaningful symbolism. As part of welcoming new members into our club community, the presentation of a pineapple burgee serves as a special mark of inclusion and belonging—a visible reminder that each new member is welcomed into a community built on camaraderie, connection, and gracious hosting.
In offering this burgee, we celebrate not only new membership, but also the shared values that bind us together, both on the water and ashore. If you see a new member with a pineapple burgee on their table, please stop by, introduce yourself, and help extend the warm welcome that defines our Club.

The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation is Fueling a lifelong love of sailing. Nestled along the vibrant waterfront of Tampa Bay, the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation (SPSF) is dedicated to opening the world of sailing to sailors of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. As a nonprofit champion for accessibility and inclusion in the sport, the Foundation actively supports education, competition, mentorship, and community engagement through meaningful programs and financial assistance. At the heart of the Foundation’s work is a simple yet powerful belief: sailing should be accessible, rewarding, and community-driven. Whether it’s a young sailor’s first race, an adult finding confidence on the water, or an experienced competitor pursuing advanced performance goals, SPSF invests in people first—providing the resources, encouragement, and opportunities that help them thrive.
Through education, mentorship, and competition, SPSF works to elevate the sport of sailing by fostering a welcoming community for amateur sailors across the region. The Foundation’s mission extends beyond instruction and racing; it strives to remove barriers to entry through scholarships, grants, partnerships, and inclusive outreach, ensuring that financial constraints don’t keep passionate participants ashore.
- The Foundation supports a spectrum of initiatives designed to grow both individual sailors and the broader sailing community:
by Joe Kefauver
1. Racing Development: From youth Opti sailors to adult match and team racers, SPSF provides grants and support for competitive development at local, national, and international levels. Individual grants help sailors pursue advanced training and travel opportunities, including support for Opti camps, ILCA campaigns, and elite events.
2. Community Sailing: SPSF partners with local nonprofits, veteran groups, and adaptive sailing programs to expand access to sailing—both on and off the water. Through scholarship support, outreach efforts, and beginner instruction, the Foundation helps build confidence and connection among participants who might otherwise face barriers to entry.
3. Adult & Youth Instruction: From beginner-level sailing lessons to advanced race training for adults, and youth summer camp scholarships that help families participate without financial strain, SPSF’s programs aim to welcome sailors at every stage of their journey.

The Foundation’s work is powered by community generosity. Contributions support essential programs, training, equipment, travel grants, and outreach efforts that make sailing more inclusive and vibrant. SPSF awards grants quarterly, with deadlines each March, June, September, and December. Whether through donations, sharing your story, or applying for a grant, your involvement helps ensure that more people can discover the joy of sailing and feel at home on the water.
Over the last few weeks, the Club has been fortunate to share some great fellowship with our friends and neighbors serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Club members Mark Luther and Joe Kefauver represented the Club at the annual Salute to the Coast Guard banquet in Tampa last month. They were able to join with other community partners and thank the men and women of the USCG for their dedication and service.

The following day, Mark and Joe attended the annual memorial service honoring the fallen crew members from Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn at the Blackthorn Memorial in St. Petersburg. The ceremony marked the 46th anniversary of the 23 lives lost during the collision between Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn and the motor vessel Capricorn near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Jan. 28, 1980. And lastly, earlier this month, Commodore Bergstrom and a delegation from the Club were hosted by the USCG for a tour of the base at Sector St. Petersburg. Our group got a real taste of Coast Guard life, spent time in their state of the art regional communications command center and poked around on a few of their ships! We value the great working relationship we have with our local guardsmen and will continue to look for opportunities to acknowledge and appreciate their service.

We are happy to report that, in February, the Board of Directors approved hiring Skanska USA Building Inc. to become our Construction Manager (“CM”). Skanska was selected from a slate of four qualified contractors and is highly experienced, having completed many successful projects both in the Tampa Bay region and globally. Their team has already offered SPYC valuable construction advice over the past few years, making them well-versed with our plans and ready to get started.
Their initial priority will be collaborating with our Owners Representative (“OR”), architect, and the internal SPYC team to make key decisions about the current designs, especially regarding constructability and costs. We now have a complete design and construction team in place to support SPYC with the development and building of the New Downtown Clubhouse. The four core elements of a smoothly managed construction project are established:
1. Owners Representative 2. Architect 3. Construction Manager 4. SPYC’s BROC Internal Committee
We continue to keep members informed through Smooth Sailing articles, “Leadership Listens” meetings, and other channels. In February, several sessions were held to gather member feedback on our future operations. A targeted member survey about the New Downtown Clubhouse will follow these input sessions. Additionally, we’ve set up a dedicated website— www.SPYCNext100.org —to offer reliable and detailed information about the New Downtown Clubhouse. The site should go live by March.
During this design phase, our CM and OR will confirm the total cost of the project. This will allow us to share more information with members about project cost and financial planning. During interviews with the four CM candidates, we validated the expectation that construction will take 18 to 24 months. According to the original Master Plan, the projected is estimated to start date in mid-2028.
The BROC committee, Flag officers, and Board of Directors remain dedicated to carefully reviewing every aspect of the New Downtown Clubhouse project and are committed to providing regular updates to our members throughout its duration.
More than 200 youth sailors took to the water for this year’s
USODA Valentine’s Regatta, filling the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Sailing Center with energy and excitement. If you’ve never experienced the Valentine’s Regatta, consider this your sign to add it to next year’s calendar.

Sailors ages 7–15 arrived ready for a full weekend of racing on Tampa Bay. A heartfelt thank you to the entire SPYC community: parents, siblings, sailors, coaches, and volunteers, who make this event run like a beautifully choreographed ballet. Unlike most Optimist regattas, sailors compete in two divisions: Gold and Silver. The Gold fleet features more experienced sailors who have spent significant time training on the water, while the Silver fleet provides an excellent racing environment for newer competitors.

After weeks of cooler weather, temperatures finally climbed into the 70s. Saturday delivered a full day of racing, with four races completed in the Gold fleet and five in the Silver fleet. Day two brought matching enthusiasm, as sailors arrived eager to make moves on the racecourse. Slightly cooler temperatures and lighter breeze set the tone, and as the day warmed, the breeze faded—allowing for one final race to close out the regatta. SPYC junior sailors had an outstanding weekend across both fleets. (continued on next page)

After two days of morning light-air postponements that pushed racing into the late afternoon on Friday and Saturday, the 2026 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg concluded on a high note. With winds gusting over 25 knots on some courses, the final day delivered thrilling conditions that rewarded experienced teams with fast runs and exhilarating downwind surfs across the fleet of 225 entries.

A sincere thank you to all of the volunteers, Race Committee members, and marina leaseholders whose time, flexibility, and dedication helped make this event possible.

Tom Collins North American Invitational Cruiser Navigation Rally is coming to Tampa Bay this May! St. Petersburg Yacht Club has the privilege to host navigation teams from around the country who have won regional contests or earned an invitation to compete.

MAY 20 -23: All members of the North American Cruiser Association (NACA) are invited to attend and participate in activities at the event. As an SPYC member, you’re invited to join in as well at the awards dinner at 6:30 pm on Sat., May 23 - reservations are required. Contestant teams will use SPYC members’ power boats assigned during the boat drawing on May 20.

Volunteer observers and scrutinizers will join the teams during boat trials Thursday, and for the competition on Saturday.
Friday is reserved for contestants’ calculation time. Their goal is to predict – some, to within tenths of a second – the time it takes to run a 35-nautical-mile course they have not seen, in a boat they have never piloted, except for during the Thursday trials. This event was previously scheduled in October 2024, but it was postponed due to hurricanes Helene and Milton.
SPYC last hosted the NAI in 2018, and has a long history with this event. The Club has hosted five others and canceled the 1999 event because of Hurricane Irene. Quite a few formidable competitors in Predicted Log, as it was previously known, have come from SPYC, including Dick Joule and Dave Shreve , who won the NAI as SPYC representatives. (To learn more see the Centennial history book; also online at spyc.org under “About us” in Part 1, Powerboats.) For more information about this year’s TCNAI, contact Chuck Goes, Committee Chair.

Sunday Times July 27, 1952: “A group of sea-worthy young women, wives of Yacht Club members, decided last October at the suggestion of Dr. W. W. Jennings, to organize a sailing group. Purpose was to learn the principles of sailing in a weekly session each Wednesday afternoon preceded by a luncheon at the Yacht Club.” “All sea yarns aside, the Salty Sisters can look back on their first eight months as progressive ones. They have such a rapidly expanding membership that crowded conditions will soon be a problem…”

Back in early 2013, under Commodore Sandy Schoenberg a small group of shotgun enthusiasts began minimally organized trips to local shooting ranges. Word of this group spread quickly. In short order the group grew and the Wing Shooter’s Society was formed as one of the Clubs Within the Club. Thirteen years later the Wing Shooter’s Society now has over 50 active members. Here’s just a few of the reasons why our group has grown.
· Our monthly meetings are rowdy. It’s a tough room to control, absolutely entertaining, laughs abound, and no one ever goes home offended. The premeeting in the bar is part of the problem. We also have a bar in the meeting room and have dinner together at the close of our business. We meet the 2nd Thursday of the month.
· After every meeting, "not exactly", the minutes are sent out. This report is overly inclusive documenting more than the business at hand. Our scribe has good ears. Not much goes unreported. Even if you whisper it will get recorded from across the room.
· Various members have nicknames. Some of the nicknames are self-chosen while others have been earned. The safe move is to pick your tag early.
· There are many opportunities to hone your shotgun shooting skills and receive free offered advice, whether wanted or not. Everybody gets better in this group.
· We have an organized shoot every Friday at one of the local sporting clays venues. Lunch is an important part of the shoot and we know all the good places.
· Limited organized hunting trips are available; dove, quail, pheasants and ducks. The big hunting trips have been to plantations in Georgia. These are mostly rustic places with a few cabins located around a lodge. The accommodations qualify at the 1/2 star level but the food is always good and not healthy. The hunts are in nearby fields with guides and dogs.
· Need a shotgun? Somebody in this group always has a gun for sale.
· We hold a few events that our spouses also attend every year; a Holiday Party in December, a trip to the OK Corral in January, a Garden and Gun event and our Big Blast Club Championship. These events are held at nice locations.
· We are noted for our camaraderie. This is a growing group of shotgun enthusiasts that behave like a small group of very good friends.

The Cruising Fleet has hit the deck running in 2026! Following a high-energy holiday season, January was defined by digital transformation and diligent preparation for our spring season. A major highlight was the launch of additional technology in the form of, "Fleet-Suite" designed to keep the Cruising Fleet connected on the go, allowing members to track vessel activities, manage event registrations, and access a comprehensive directory.
On the water, our January "double-header" was a resounding success. Thirty members cruised to downtown Tampa to watch the Lightning secure a victory at Benchmark International Arena , following a fantastic group dinner at Harpoon Harry’s . That same day, our Daytrippers enjoyed a "park-and-dine" lunch at Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro.
No Slowing Down: February will be packed with unique opportunities. Our February 5th Fleet Meeting is a special off-site event at The Hangar Restaurant / Albert Whitted Airport. We are thrilled to host Anthony Marinello of Tropic Air Rescue, who will provide a private tour of their rescue helicopter.
The adventure continues with two back-to-back cruises to Clearwater Yacht Club . Group 1 departs February 20th–22nd, followed by Group 2 from February 27th–March 1st. Additionally, our Daytrippers will visit Doc Ford’s (Jungle Terrace) on February 26th.
Finally, planning for the Blessing of the Fleet (March 20–22) is well underway. We have confirmed Talos (Rob & Michele Matthes) as the Blessing Vessel and Hula Girl (Steve Shortt & Alicia McManaman) as the Signal Boat. Whether we are watching the Bolts win or touring rescue helicopters, it’s the camaraderie of this amazing Cruising Fleet that makes 2026 so promising.

January Fish of the Month: Sheepshead – The Convict Who’ll Steal Your Bait and Your Dignity! Anglers Wayne Andrews & Brian Hill show off their FOM for January, the elusive Sheepshead. The month kicked off with our much-anticipated Annual Mah Jongg Tournament, chaired by Eva Hefner . Thirty-two ladies participated in the tournament, held on February 2, 2026, at Pass-a-Grille. Eva truly outdid herself with a beautifully executed Asian theme, and many participants embraced the spirit of the day by dressing for the occasion—adding even more fun and flair to an already lively event.
Our February luncheon program featured celebrated color specialist Jill Kirsch, who shared her expertise on finding the most flattering colors to wear. Jill’s impressive career includes advising Hollywood red-carpet stars, appearances in major media outlets such as E! News, Redbook, InStyle, and Inc., and being featured in the award-winning documentary Gray Is the New Blonde. Keep an eye out—our members are sure to be dazzling with their newly discovered looks! by Lisa Curtin, President

February also marked an important milestone for our ever-growing club with a vote on much-needed by-law updates. Our members approved the changes, all of which are designed to ensure Ladies Beach Club remains welcoming, inclusive, and well-positioned for continued growth. In addition, the slate of candidates for the 2026–27 season was introduced, with voting scheduled to take place in March 2026.
Looking ahead, March will bring an Irish-themed luncheon, April will feature the newly renovated Beach Theatre, and May will wrap up the season with a program presented by Tampa Bay Watch.
Ladies Beach Club welcomes new members year-round. Our luncheon programs are held from September through May and offer the perfect opportunity to learn something new, nurture friendships, and enjoy a delicious lunch in great company. In February the Salty Sisters continued their 75th Anniversary Celebration with a fabulous 4-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico on the Enchantment of the Seas out of Tampa . Our highly qualified Salty Cruise Directors, Gail Falkingham & PC Carol Hansen organized forty-six Salties for some fun, celebration, fellowship and appreciation of the Salty Sisters and our rich history. Captain Mik Severini thanked Gail and Carol for all their detailed planning, dedication, and hard work to create this special memory for the Salty cruisers.

As we sailed away from Tampa and towards the Skyway Bridge , Salty Sister Sarah Richards positioned herself at the Fort Desoto fishing pier for a photo of the ship passing beneath the bridge. Many of the Salties gathered in PC Janet Walker & Helen Larsen’s cabin to watch us sail under the bridge. We waved…..but of course, we were too far away to see Sarah.
Everyone was busy on the two days at sea with shipboard activities, playing Bridge, Mahjong, and Rummikub. The evenings were packed full of music, shows, trivia, and lots of Salty Sisters on the dance floor.
Gail organized a private cocktail party with RCCL on the first day at sea. Mudslides were quite popular that afternoon. Carol provided some entertainment with a Photo Scavenge Hunt and a Salty Bar Hop. On the last day at sea, Nancy Dunn & Nancy Vldibill opened their cabin for a lovely celebration of Nancy Vildibill’s birthday.
When we arrived in Cozumel, the Salties took off in several directions. Some enjoyed snorkeling at Paradise Beach , some went shopping in downtown Cozumel , and several ended up having lunch at a restaurant called La Choza for some authentic Mexican cuisine. All in all, the Salty Sisters had a marvelous time & made some great memories.

he Golf Group at SPYC kicked off our January meeting with some wellness, as Yoga Instructor, Nice Albert lead us through a stretching and conditioning routine for Golf. We enjoyed two outings in January. On January 15th we bundled up to play at Mangrove Bay during Florida winter conditions. Congratulations to our first-place ladies winners: Bekah Rush, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Marion Whetzel, & Nancy Sidow . Our first-place winners in the men’s flight were Lou Virelli, Mike Walsh, Kevin Sidow, & John Rogers . There was no closest to the pin competition at this outing. We gathered afterwards at nearby Rumba Bar and Grill for hot toddies and great food. Our January 22nd outing took place at Southern Hills Plantation , where over twenty golfers came out to play in beautiful Brooksville! Congratulations to our first-place winners who scored four under par: Bobby Robertson, Joe Hare, Kim Bowers, & Bekah Rush. Congratulations to our second-place winners, also at four under par, but with a bogey on the hardest hole: Jim Hudy,
