Dear Fellow SPYC Members...

We are officially into the Summer months. I hope each of you are finding time to enjoy the water, the Club, and the slower rhythm that this season can bring. While some of the cold fronts of Spring seemed to linger a little longer this year, once they decided to exit, the heat and humidity took over fast.

Although the Club activities calendar is a bit lighter this time of year, there is still plenty happening — and plenty to celebrate together. May saw the very successful staging of the 53rd running of the Regata del Sol al Sol to Isla Mujeres. I am proud to report that the winning team, on corrected time, sailed on longtime members John and Janet Hamm’s beautiful Hylas 54, crewed by Past Commodore Harvey Ford, and yours truly. It was a great experience to be part of that crew and to see SPYC well represented in this storied event. A big thanks to Paul Goodman and his team for all their hard work, and to the Salty Sisters, who sponsored the event and showed up with many volunteers to help make it a success. Additionally, we hosted several annual favorites, including the Kentucky Derby Party and Mother’s Day Brunch.

Moving into June, we hosted a successful Maritime Enforcement Appreciation Day, where many members got to experience up close the importance of the various agencies working our waterways carry out. We had vessels from the St. Petersburg Police Department, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the United States Coast Guard. Each agency showcased vessels and equipment used in rescue situations, safety assignments, and general enforcement, and it was a meaningful reminder of how fortunate we are to enjoy our boating community with their support always close by.

Also in June, your Vice Commodore and Commodore, along with Colleen Finney and Corey Hall, were proud to attend the official start of the countdown to the arrival of The Ocean Race in St. Petersburg in May of 2027. The Dali Museum hosted a reception on June 12th, where all the stakeholders for the event were represented. There is great momentum around the stopover, which will take place May 4th - 16th next Spring. SPYC will be the host Club, along with the City of St. Petersburg, USF-St. Petersburg, and Visit St. Pete-Clearwater. There will be numerous opportunities to get involved with this event as the weeks and months ahead unfold.

The BROC group continues to develop programming and direction for our architects to incorporate into Schematic Design. It is a slower process, but I can assure you great analysis and care is being put into the process to ensure the outcome will be a great facility which we all will be able to enjoy, and be proud of for many years into the future. By the time you read this log, your Board of Directors will have approved the budget for our 2026/27 fiscal year. After close collaboration with management and much consideration, our Finance Committee recommended a 5% increase in dues for our next fiscal year. The Board followed this recommendation, and adopted the budget as presented.

As we look ahead, I hope members will take advantage of a few summer opportunities to gather at and enjoy. Please mark your calendars for our BIG 4th of July Celebration - always a wonderful time to come together with family and friends. The event is especially meaningful this year, as we Celebrate 250th birthday of the United States. Also, the Ladies Pool Party on July 25th promises to be another fun summer event; a great reminder that even during the quieter months, there are still plenty of reasons to enjoy one another’s company at SPYC. I would also like to remind you that our Downtown Clubhouse will be closed for Annual Shutdown from July 27th through August 11th. During the shutdown, various maintenance projects and some deep cleaning of multiple outlets will be carried out. Our Beach Club at Pass-a-Grille will be open 7 days/week while downtown is closed - Annual Shutdown for Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse will take place September 15th - 23rd. I look forward to seeing many of you around the Club over the summer.

Regata del Sol al Sol continues to be one of our members' favorite traditions, combining the excitement of offshore racing with the camaraderie and unforgettable experiences that make this event so special. From sailing and outstanding fishing to the alwaysanticipated basketball game and lively shoreside activities, there's something for everyone to enjoy. For many participants, the true highlight is arriving in Isla Mujeres—one of the most beautiful and beloved destinations in the Caribbean. With its crystalclear waters, warm hospitality, and vibrant island culture, it's easy to see why sailors return year after year for this incredible adventure.

Congratulations to all of our Class Winners: John Gardner (After You) in Cruising B; John Hamm (Split Decision) in Cruising A; Kevin Palmer (Dragonfly) taking Multihull; Ward Passmore (Freedom of Hamble) in Racer/Cruiser; Mike Danielson (Wings ) topping Spinnaker PHRF. Well sailed by all!

None of this happens without the people behind the scenes. A heartfelt thank you to our Race Committee for executing a smooth and well-run race…. your time, expertise, and dedication to getting it right makes all the difference for every boat on the water.

To our volunteers and support team — from dock to committee boat and everywhere in between — THANK YOU! SPYC racing runs on your energy and we are grateful for every one of you. Congratulations to all our finishers, and we look forward to seeing the fleet back out soon.

ST. PETERSBURG SAILING FOUNDATION:

EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY ON AND OFF THE WATER

The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation (SPSF) has been busy working behind the scenes to award numerous grants during its 2025–26 grant cycle. And they are just getting started -from first-time participants to elite international competitors, the SPSF is looking to make a lasting impact on and off the water.

Among this year's recipients was Kate, currently the top-ranked U.S. female in ILCA Grand Prix points, who received support to compete at the U21 World Championship in Dublin. Dalton received support to represent his country at the Optimist South American Championship. And Guthrie received support as one of only five Americans selected to compete in the prestigious Wilson Trophy in Liverpool.

The Foundation's impact extended well beyond competitive sailing. Warrior Sailing was awarded $10,000 to support two Basic Training Camps at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center , helping to provide more than 40 wounded, ill, and injured veterans with the opportunity to learn to sail, build confidence, and connect with a supportive community.

Perhaps the most meaningful awards, however, went to two young sailors whose families would not otherwise have been able to afford access to the sport. Their grants reflect the Foundation's core mission: ensuring that every child who dreams of stepping aboard a sailboat has the opportunity to discover a lifelong passion for sailing.

This is just the beginning. We are excited to continue expanding our community impact and cannot wait to share more as we partner with the  Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation  and  Academy Prep  to introduce even more young people to the lifelong opportunities that sailing provides.

The continued success of the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation is made possible through the support of its community. Those looking to get involved can do so in several meaningful ways. Contributions directly support scholarships, training opportunities, and outreach programs, ensuring that more individuals can access the water.

Sailors and families are encouraged to explore available programs and apply for support, while advocates can help amplify the Foundation’s mission by sharing its impact

SPYC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

MAY 9, 2026 - What a fantastic day on the water for our annual Club Championship! Members competed not only for club bragging rights— but also for one of the most coveted prizes at the Yacht Club... the Club Champion parking spot!

Ocean Race 2027 Coming to St. Pete-Clearwater!

Recently, members of the St. Pete-Clearwater delegation visited The Ocean Race headquarters in Alicante, Spain, where they met with race officials and explored the Ocean Race Museum. The visit provided a firsthand look at the history, innovation, and global impact of an event that has inspired millions since its beginnings in 1973.

In May 2027, St. Pete-Clearwater will join a select group of international host destinations as The Ocean Race arrives on Florida's Gulf Coast. The stopover will showcase our region's worldclass sailing, vibrant waterfront, marine industry, and commitment to environmental stewardship while welcoming visitors, sailors, and media from around the globe.

At the center of the St. Pete-Clearwater stopover experience will be Ocean Live Park, an interactive waterfront festival featuring race team compounds, educational exhibits, sustainability initiatives, live entertainment, family activities, and opportunities to meet sailors from around the world. As one of the region's premier waterfront institutions, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and its members will play a key role in helping bring this global event to life.

From welcoming visitors and supporting hospitality efforts to sharing our rich sailing heritage and passion for the water, SPYC

The event will create exciting volunteer opportunities both on and off the water. Whether assisting with marina operations, supporting spectator fleets, welcoming guests, participating in educational programs, or helping with sustainability initiatives, volunteers will be instrumental in delivering a world-class experience. The success of the stopover will depend on the energy and dedication of community members, and SPYC's history of volunteerism positions the Club to be a leader in that effort.

Beyond the racing, The Ocean Race is about inspiring the next generation. Through its focus on science, technology, sustainability, and ocean conservation, the event creates opportunities for young people to connect with the water and explore future careers in maritime industries. Through our youth sailing programs, community outreach initiatives, and commitment to developing future sailors, SPYC is uniquely positioned to help extend that impact throughout the Tampa Bay region.

As preparations continue, members and community partners will have numerous opportunities to become involved and help shape this historic event. The countdown to 2027 has begun, and with the support of our members, volunteers, and community leaders, St. Petersburg Yacht Club will help welcome the world to St. PeteClearwater and showcase the very best of our waterfront community.

Since joining SPYC in 2015, Executive Chef Christian has led the club's culinary vision with creativity, passion, and a deep appreciation for culture and cuisine Raised on a working farm in the Austrian alpine foothills, his culinary journey began unexpectedly during a supplier visit to the Vienna Plaza Hilton, where he earned an apprenticeship on the spot

Today, that same adventurous spirit inspires the hundreds of unique menus he develops each year, from elegant Commodore's Balls to Grand Prix Week celebrations and everything in between

Chef Troy's culinary perspective has been shaped by a life spent exploring different cultures and cuisines. Growing up in Italy and Germany while following his father's military career, he developed an appreciation for authentic ingredients and regional flavors.

“I love the authenticity and simplicity of food. Most importantly, my mother provided me with the key ingredient when cooking: PATIENCE!”

Led by his mother's philosophy to let ingredients speak for themselves, Troy creates dishes that balance simplicity with exceptional flavor. His beloved Shepherd's Pie feature remains a favorite among members and is a testament to his approach to comfort food done exceptionally well.

We are proud to announce that Tim Green has been selected as our Employee of the Month for June. Tim has been a dedicated member of the Pass-a-Grille Beach Club team for three years. He originally joined us as a steward and became a vital team member when the hurricane forced the Beach Club to close. For nearly a year, Tim worked on the pool deck every weekend, adapting to the temporary operational changes with a positive attitude and building strong relationships with our Members. Tim has since been promoted to Pantry Chef, where his impact continues to grow. He is frequently requested by Members in the restaurant and is known among the staff as a versatile team player who is always willing to assist in any department. His commitment to improving the menu, the Club, and the overall Member experience makes this recognition well-deserved. Next time you visit the Pass-a-Grille location, please join us in congratulating Tim for his hard work and this achievement!

Etiquette expert, Kim Goddard will help guide families through the challenge of "Dining Out" with children. The Commodore Club will be the center of this etiquette training (no other diners will be permitted in the space on these dates). Come in between the hours of 6:009:00 pm on your chosen day and order dinner as you always would. Kim will then go around to each family table to offer her guidance and suggestions to make dining out a breeze.

Wine Club

The Wine Club is an intimate, member-based group devoted exclusively to wine education & exploration. It brings together individuals who share a passion for wine & a desire to deepen their understanding in a refined yet welcoming environment. Members experience thoughtfully guided tastings featuring wines from boutique wineries and thoughtfully selected producers, expanding their knowledge while enjoying meaningful conversation with like-minded enthusiasts. The club meets every other month on the first Thursday, for a total of six gatherings each year.

Each meeting is a curated tasting experience rather than a traditional wine dinner. To encourage curiosity and openminded discovery, wines & menus are intentionally not disclosed in advance. OBroad Reachers

n May 21st , several Broad Reachers attended this year’s FWSA Annual Meeting and luncheon at Davis Island hosted by the Dinghy Dames . Each year the member FWSA clubs nominate a young lady who is a resident of Florida or competing on a team out of state. She is dedicated to training to compete in the world of sailboat racing. Women from the ages of 10 to 25 are considered for this prestigious award that helps the sailor continue their sailing career. This year the award was given to Kate Danielson of St. Petersburg for her impressive abilities on and off the water.

Woman's Club

IThe Broad Reachers, along with the Salty Sisters, were proud to nominate Kate this year. Kate received a lovely keeper trophy as well as a monetary award that helps the sailor continue their sailing career. The perpetual trophy will be on display at Pass-a-Grille during the coming year.

The Broads continue meeting on the second Saturday of each month for lunch and camaraderie. Come join us for some lunch and a dip in the pool this summer.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Susan Holshouser for her leadership during the past year and to the board members who served alongside her, including Robin Biloski, Michele Stella, Lindsay Carter, Juliette Clark, Pam Rose-Haas, Celesta Carter & Nancy Dunn , for their service and commitment to the Woman's Club. Our May "Passport to Pour" event was a wonderful way to conclude the season. Members enjoyed an evening of friendship, delicious cuisine, and specially selected wines inspired by Italy, Provence, and Napa Valley. A special thank you to Lindsay Carter and Celesta Carter for creating such a memorable and enjoyable evening. We are grateful for their hard work and creativity in bringing this event to life.

Membership renewal is now underway. Annual dues for the 2026–2027 year are $50 and were due June 1st. About Ladies Beach Club:

Ladies Beach Club meets at the SPYC Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse, generally on the third Monday of each month at 11:00 am, from September through May. Each meeting features an interesting guest speaker, themed luncheon, and opportunities to connect with fellow members. Membership is open to all ladies of SPYC. Annual dues are just $40 per year, with dues directly supporting club programming and activities. In addition to our monthly luncheons, members may participate in two special interest groups, Book Club and Mah Jongg. The club also hosts its popular Annual Mah Jongg Tournament each February.

Clear Skies & Upcoming Horizons

May has been a spectacular month of activity, transition, and community for the Cruising Fleet! We kicked off the month by celebrating the incredible stories and shared memories of our highly successful Spring Commodore’s Cruise.

The cruise truly reminded us of the boater’s golden rule: flexibility is key. Due to low water levels in Lake Okeechobee , our crews executed a swift pivot to a West Coast itinerary. Despite the lastminute change, the trip was an absolute blast. Cruisers beautifully navigated challenging conditions heading south, converged for a wonderful combined dinner at Faro Blanco’s Lighthouse Kitchen + Bar, and enjoyed pond-like conditions on the Gulf of Mexico for a smooth journey home.

At our May 7th Fleet meeting, we were thrilled to welcome Ross Giarratana, a professional Meteorologist from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Ruskin, FL. As an avid surfer, boater, and fisherman, Ross brought both professional expertise and an invaluable mariner’s perspective to his presentation. He shared expert insights into the unique challenges of tropical meteorology and coastal weather patterns along the Gulf Coast, giving our members excellent practical advice for staying safe on the water this season.

Our fleet turned out beautifully to support the 2026 Tom Collins North American Invitational Predictive Log Competition . A huge shout-out to the incredible captains and crews who volunteered their vessels on May 23rd! You made us proud out there—here is the official leaderboard for our fleet crews:

We wrapped up our monthly social events on May 28th with a fantastic Daytrippers outing to the Hula Bay Club for a great afternoon of waterfront dining.

Looking ahead, the 2026 Fall Commodore's Cruise planning is already underway and is slated for September 18th – 29th , this 10-day journey features incredible stops from St. Petersburg to Fort Myers. See you on the water!

Salty Sisters

The Annual FWSA Rainbow Regatta was held on April 21st at the Clearwater Sailing Center hosted by the Clearwater Bow Chasers & Dunedin Windlasses . Sailing in Sunfish were Audrey Orgo, Captain Mik Severini, Pat Burrows, Marti Cochran, PC Dee Gill, PC Carol Hansen, PC Jennifer Paramore, & Suzanne Boohar. Sailing in Optis for the Salties were Katie Rodgers, Elizabeth McCaffree, Renée Athey, Iris Mastry, Patty Kincer, & Jenny Roche . Congratulations to Renée for placing 2nd in the Opti races. Winning the FWSA Rookie Award s were Elizabeth in an Opti and Mik sailing her Sunfish!! The Rainbow teams couldn’t have pulled this off without the help of all the volunteers who helped load, unload, launch and do anything that was needed. We want to thank our coaches this year, Britt Madigan, PC Barbara Watson for coaching the Opti team, and Luffing Lassie Lynne Randall for taking on the Sunfish team.

The Salty Sisters were well represented at the Regata del Sol al Sol and, as always, were very helpful. They were presented with a plaque in appreciation for their efforts. Some of the Salty Sisters that ventured across to Mexico were Karen Lieberman, PC Gina Bowden-Pierce, PC Beverly Smoak, Judy McFadden, Taryn Bergstrom, Lori Hodges, & PC Barbara Watson.

The Tom Collins North American Invitational (TCNAI) , a National Championship for Power Boat Navigational Rallies (Predicted Logs) was held at SPYC May 20-23. Contestants came from California, Seattle, Chicago and St. Petersburg competing on a 35-mile course on Tampa Bay. The Salty Sisters served as Race Committee for this prestigious event. When our Florida summer arrives many of the Wing Shooters depart for the moderate weather found to the north. Those that stick it out continue weekly Friday morning shoots at one of the local sporting clay courses and monthly dinner meetings on the 2nd Thursday. We will also visit the Wednesday evening shotgun games at Skyway Trap and Skeet. The Skyway regulars welcome us to their Annie Oakley competition on the wobble trap field. Named after a famous woman in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show, three shooters at a time vie to break the same clay target. Missed shots count against you, it’s a cut throat event and three capitalized misses put you out. The last shooter standing wins. Friendly side bets are a part of the action. Celebrate the 250th by catching July’s FOM – Red Snapper! Submissions are open to the entire club; please email the Saltwater Angler’s (email below) for details on how to submit photos with measurements.

• Species: Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) are part of the snapper family (Lutjanidae).

• Habitat: Found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the southeastern U.S. coast. They typically live around reefs, ledges, wrecks, and rocky bottoms.

• Diet: Carnivores that feed on smaller fish, crustaceans, and squid.

• Size and Lifespan: Commonly 10–20 pounds but can grow over 30 pounds and up to 40 inches long and live 50+ years.
