A very Happy New Year goes out to our entire membership. I hope everyone had a most memorable holiday season with family and friends. Taryn & I much enjoyed the many December events around the Club. Both downtown and Pass-a-Grille were busy with numerous traditional events, from Thanksgiving to the Christmas Sweater contest, to the North Pole Adventure party.

026 was rung in with a “Night of Magic” party, and now we are off to a busy start for the new year, with the New Year Eggnog Party (downtown) and a Good Luck Buffet at the Beach Club (PAG). I would like to thank you for your generous support of the Employee Holiday Fund. We collected in excess of $130,000, which was distributed to our 187 dedicated team members on December 18th. This month we will host numerous regattas: • Salt Pines - January 9th, • Followed closely by the Master Driver Team Race on January 10-11. • Next up, USODA Team Race Midwinters (January 17-19) • Closing out the month with the (Past Commodore) John Jennings Regatta on January 31st. The Membership Committee will also be hosting a booth at the St. Petersburg Boat Show this year, which will take place January 15-18. Be sure to send any prospective members to meet the committee or stop by and say hello. Our Master Planning process made significant progress in December, with the start of the schematic design phase of the project, along with retaining a construction manager to provide estimates and pre-construction services in support of our owner’s representative and architectural firm(s).

We expect to see exciting progress on the design and planning over the next 90-120 days, and I look forward to sharing further progress with you in the weeks ahead. Management and the Flag has also been busy. We are in the process of selecting an Assistant General Manager, and I will report on progress for this position in February. Additionally, management is still interviewing for a new Controller to free up Colleen Finney, our new General Manager. Lastly, please join me for our next Leadership Listens session coming up on January 6th. I see it as vitally important that Board Members and Leaders of our Club listen to input from all members, whether it be good experiences and bad. Please participate in these informal meetings throughout 2026. We need your input to continue to improve your Club. See you around the Club,

MASTER PLAN UPDATE FROM BROC

lanning for the new Downtown Clubhouse is moving forward and has now entered the next step, called Schematic Design. At this point, we’re adding an experienced general contractor to the team. This contractor will work closely with our owner’s representative and architect to help keep the design on budget and make sure everything runs smoothly. Having them involved early helps prevent surprises, control costs, and keep the project on track for timing, quality, and overall success. We’ve interviewed several contractors to provide these preconstruction services. We’ve also taken another close look at whether it makes sense to renovate or elevate the existing building. As previous studies showed, the building and many of its systems are at the end of their useful life.

Renovating would require significant investment to replace aging components, improve flood protection, and make needed and desired improvements. An updated review and discussions with our design team confirm that lifting the building would be risky, costly (more than $8.4 million to lift and support), and would result in extended downtime. Even after lifting, major renovations and structural work would still be necessary. For these reasons, the Board’s earlier decision to build a new Downtown Clubhouse remains the most practical and responsible long-term choice for the future of the Club. During construction, we are committed to providing interim club facilities so members can continue to enjoy club activities. Our board has worked diligently to strengthen our foundation for the next 100 years; broadening our reach, expanding access, and ensuring that sailing continues to enrich lives across our community.

his year, we proudly awarded 11 grants, supporting programs that reflect the heart of our mission. Through your generosity, we were able to: • Support youth sailors as they develop skills & confidence on the water • Provide opportunities for amateur racers to compete and grow • Introduce Academy Prep students to the joy of sailing • Empower veterans through the transformative Warrior Sailing Program • Assist community partners who create accessible pathways to the sport

Each grant represents a life touched, a door opened, and a meaningful step toward a more inclusive sailing community. Your support continues to make a profound difference. We are proud to share how contributions directly impact those we serve: • • • •

COAST GUARD COMMITTEE

his holiday season, the Coast Guard Committee worked diligently to organize a special experience for members of the Coast Guard serving during the holidays. This marked the first of what we hope will be many Adopt-a-Guardsman evenings. SPYC members and Coast Guard service members were paired for an evening filled with conversation, laughter, and shared stories! Creating meaningful connections, we look forward to building on in the future. In addition, our committee partnered with the Salty Sisters, who thoughtfully hand-wrote holiday cards to Coast Guard members, helping spread a little extra cheer during this special time of year. Thank you to everyone who helped make the holidays brighter for these dedicated men and women.

SALTY SISTERS 1951 - 2026

Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Salty Sisters!

n the fall of 1951, under the guidance of P/C W.W. Jennings, a group of ten women, all of them wives of SPYC members, formed what is now believed to be the first organized women’s sailing group in the nation. The group’s objective was to learn the principles of sailing and to sail small boats in sessions each Wednesday afternoon after lunch at the Yacht Club. The original ten founding members were Eleanor Ellis, Betty Jennings, Dotty Lang, Joyce McEvoy, Mary Jane Misener, Margie Peterson, Joey Powell, Ruth Rifley, June Schowe, & Phyllis Shaver. At first the women started sailing in Hagerty prams, then evolved to Optimist-class Prams. Over the years, they sailed in Fish Class sloops, Flying Scots, Rhodes 19, Ideal 18’s, Sonars, Sunfish, 420’s, & J70’s. In 1958, the Salty Sisters began sailing against other neighboring women’s sailing groups in inter-club regattas, which has continued to this day. In the fall of 1973, Salty Sisters Ardith Rutland and Fran Weaver Nohren spearheaded the formation of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA), to “promote women’s inter-club racing in Florida.”

During the year 2000, Salty Sister Patricia Seidenspinner became the first woman Commodore of the SPYC! Not only was she our Commodore, but Pat was also the first woman Principal Race Officer in the Olympics, along with her many other accomplishments. Many Salties are highly skilled sailors and have competed in regional, national, and international regattas at all levels. In 2012, Salty Sister Jennifer French became an Olympic Champion winning a silver medal sailing in the Paralympic Games based in London. Each year the Salty Sisters compete among themselves in many types of trophy races sailing in Prams, Ideals, Sunfish, and Sonars. Every Wednesday morning, the women gather at the Sailing Center ready to sail or, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, hold educational training sessions. The Salty Sisters organization is made up of a group of diversely talented women, and many have left their indelible marks of leadership on Salty Sisters and the SPYC, through their sailing and race committee talents. And now in 2026 as we celebrate 75 remarkable years, the Salty Sisters continue to flourish based on our mission “To promote sailing and to assist our members in becoming proficient in the science of sailing.”

Cruiser Navigation Program - Since 1966 The North American Cruiser Association annually holds the Tom Collins North American Invitational Navigation Rally [TCNAI] hosted last year by the Chicago YC on August 20–23, 2025. Two members from SPYC participated in this event – our FCYC delegate Chuck Goes and Paul Goodman. “Top navigators from NACA associations throughout North America came together to compete in this contest called a navigational rally (formerly predicted log) to test the power skippers' ability to precisely navigate their boat over a predetermined course of 40 miles (with several legs, turns and marks) without the benefit of a timepiece. The winner is the skipper with the lowest percentage of error between the time the skipper predicted and the actual time the boat took to run each leg. There is a catch, the boat for each contestant is determined by random drawing (see photo at left) – bobbing for numbered ducks and participating navigators have no prior knowledge of the boats!” Chuck Goes & Paul Goodman The team of Goodman & Goes competed on m/v 2025 TCNAI 2nd Place Winners Lake House a 56’ Prestige – Paul was recruited to drive while Chuck navigated. Turns out they made a pretty good team – capturing second place! [Interesting to note: competition namesake Tom Collins competed on the 1st place team...]

It was at this event, the “NACA Lou Gandelman” trophy was presented to Mr. Goes. Since 1974, this trophy has been awarded to a member who has made a significant contribution to the sport of Cruiser Navigation Contests. Chuck has the honor to be among only a few other SPYC members to be recipients of this prestigious trophy. Congratulations Chuck!

he Woman’s Club enjoyed a festive and lively December, highlighted by our annual Christmas Boutique, co-sponsored with the Salty Sisters. Guests spent the afternoon shopping, enjoying a signature holiday cocktail, and supporting the Junior Sailing Program at SPYC. Now in its 25th year, the Boutique remains one of the Club’s most treasured traditions. We extend a heartfelt thank-you to all our volunteers, with special appreciation for Woman’s Club Board Member Lindsay Carter, who served as this year’s Boutique Chair. The Land & Sea Group gathered at The Melting Pot on December 11th for an evening of fondue, friendship, and holiday cheer. It was a warm break from the holiday rush and a perfect chance to spend time together before the close of the year.

Looking ahead, we are excited to kick off 2026 with our Southern Soirée on January 15th, featuring special guest Lydia Menzies. Light bites will be provided and a wine pairing will be available for purchase, adding a delicious complement to the evening’s program. Lydia is a celebrated lifestyle and entertaining expert known for her gracious approach to hosting and her belief that every gathering can be elevated with thoughtful details. She is the founder of the award-winning blog Lydia Menzies Celebrates, where she shares inspiration for tablescapes, seasonal décor, menus, and creative celebrations. Her work has been featured in Southern Lady, Entertain & Celebrate, Victoria Magazine, and other national publications. Lydia is also the author of "The Supper Club", encouraging women to create meaningful and memorable experiences through the art of hosting. Her blend of southern charm and modern creativity promises an inspiring program at the Soirée. We have a strong lineup of programs planned for the coming months and warmly invite all SPYC women to join the Woman’s Club. he Golf Group at SPYC looks forward to a new year of golfing in 2026. Our November outing took place at the beautiful Hunters Green course on November 18th. Congratulations to our first-place winners who scored three under par: Bill Protz, Brad Bell, & Bekah Rush. Our secondplace winners at one over par were Martin Morris, Sue Cooper, Steve Clapp, & Thomas Myannetti. The closest to the pin were: John Arsenault, Ben Hansbury, & Brad Bell. Our last outing of the year was held on December 16th at Bardmoor, where over twenty golfers came out to play during this busy time of year! Members gathered for holiday festivities and the annual tradition of singing the Twelve Days of Christmas at our Holiday Party on December 4th. Congratulations to our male golfer of the year for 2025, Pat Kaufman, & our female golfer of the year, Tammy Barna. Future outings include Mangrove Bay & Seminole Lake County Club. Come join our golf group this year! Our group is comprised of a diverse mix of people with all golf skill levels. We typically play a four-person scramble format once a month at a different course in the Tampa Bay Area. Our meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month, at 6:00 pm at the Downtown Clubhouse. Check the marquis sign at the front entrance or ask at the front desk for the specific room location. Please note our February meeting will be a special off-site social event at Par Bar in downtown Saint Pete. Please RSVP using the club events section in the club calendar. he Cruising Fleet closed out November with incredible camaraderie and activity, and sailed right into a festive December season!

NOVEMBER CRUISES: TWO TRIPS TO TAMPA YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB Our popular destination, the Tampa Yacht & Country Club, hosted two enthusiastic groups last year in November. Group 1, led by Port Director John Lenhart, enjoyed a fabulous weekend with eight confirmed boats. The itinerary included morning fitness walks and spirited pickleball matches, capped off by formal dining and great friendship. Group 2, led by Port Directors Jeff & Sue Cooper, enjoyed a spectacular time from November 21st–23rd. The fun started with an amazing docktail hour featuring one of Sue’s famous “suecuterie” boards. Saturday included a long morning walk along Bayshore Blvd and pickleball. The evening gathering included a thoughtful exercise on recognizing strengths, followed by a wonderful meal in the club's formal dining room.

DAY TRIPPERS: A NEW CHAPTER On November 20th, the Day Trippers enjoyed a fantastic Dock-N-Dine luncheon at The Getaway, where 14 cruisers attended. The highlight was an impromptu "Passing of the Burgee" ceremony, marking a special transition as Al Torres & Jennifer Kirk officially took the helm as the new Day Tripper leaders, accepting the role from Sue Cooper. We thank Sue and congratulate Al and Jennifer!

DECEMBER EVENTS: We closed out 2025 in style with our Annual Awards & Holiday Party on December 12th (part of the December 11th–14th events). Next was the Lighting of the Yachts, which took place on December 13th. This was a fun and festive event for all members who attended. The Day Trippers Holiday Party was a celebratory lunch at Parkshore Grill on December 18th, and a fantastic wrap-up to the 2025 Cruising Fleet event calendar.

JANUARY EVENTS: We’re not slowing down in 2026! Jan 8th Fleet Luncheon & Program: Guest speaker Mario Vittone, a retired U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmer, will share his 22 years of experience rescuing boaters in distress. 25th Annual Christmas Boutique

ecember 2nd was the 25th annual SPYC Christmas Boutique. and it was quite a success! Event Chair Carol Hansen thanked the Salty Sisters volunteers that made up the “team” including Joy Rudnicki & Anna Oleka for handling the beautiful display of raffle items; Angela Treinen, our volunteer coordinator; Lindsay Carter for searching for and increasing our vendor participation; Beverly Smoak for handling the raffle tickets & money; KT Trudeau for her help with the vendors and many other tasks needed. Tricia Billings, Katie Rodgers, & Barbara Deininger delivered the lunches to all the vendors. We want to thank Robin Biloski, who did a great job recruiting volunteers from the St. Petersburg Women’s Club! ALL our volunteers made the event a total success. There was a total of 55 vendors this year filing up the Ballroom, Waterfront, Harborview, and Ladies Card Rooms. Each of the vendors donated an item for the raffle, so there were many winners!! The 50/50 was again quite successful with Bob Leary winning the raffle. Bob was such a good sport, he donated the winnings right back to the Boutique to be used for the Learn to Sail scholarships for the YMCA kids. We also want to thank the individual sponsors for their contributions. The SPYC Christmas Boutique is a 501(c)3, so all contributions are tax deductible.

hat a joyful way to usher in the holidays and New Year! Our annual Holiday Luncheon was filled with sparkle, music, and festive fun. A highlight of the day was a visit from Fairy Elizabeth Connell, who worked her magic by weaving delicate silk fairy-hair strands into members’ hair—adding just the right touch of shimmer for the season. We were also treated to a delightful performance by SPYC’s very own Nauti Cats, followed by our always-popular Gift Exchange, where laughter and surprises were abundant. And, of course, the beloved tradition continues—“Gnome Go Home” has officially been passed along to its caretaker for 2026! Looking ahead, our January 19th luncheon will feature guest speaker Cathy Wrigley, who will share her expertise on Florida Native Gardening—a program that promises to be both informative and inspiring. Our programs would not be possible without the exceptional Pass-a-Grille staff, whose dedication and hospitality make every gathering a warm and welcoming experience Attendance has been so strong this season that we even expanded into the bar seating area—what a wonderful testament to the enthusiasm of our members! wenty-three members and 11 spouses participated in the Wing Shooters Big Blast Sporting Clays Competition on November 30th. The event was held at Thundercloud Gun Club. Five non-shooting spouses added to the festivities. A 100 target sporting clays competition was followed by a hearty lunch served in the clubhouse. The top shooters were honored at the awards ceremony. In the Wing Shooters Division Jack Cartier took 1st place with a score of 89, Tony Bond was 2nd and Gene Collins was 3rd. In the Ladies’ Division Terri Amick & Nancy Bauer tied for first with scores of 64. The tie breaker went to Terri who shot with a 20 gauge while Nancy’s shotgun was a 12 gauge. Third place, another tie, was shared by Debbie Hopper & Carol Colin. Thundercloud is a 3,000 acre private shooting and hunting club 40 minutes from St. Petersburg in Manatee County. The club offers premier target shooting and hunting.
