Dear Fellow SPYC members, I hope 2026 is off to a wonderful start for everyone. Both the Downtown Club and the Beach Club are bustling with activity as we move deeper into the heart of sailing regatta season. February is already shaping up to fly by!
This month, we are proud to host two of our major annual events: the Valentine’s Regatta on February 7 and 8, followed by the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series (HHSWRS) from February 13–15. Both events attract large and highly competitive fleets and require significant organizational and logistical coordination from our outstanding Waterfront staff. Fortunately, they consistently rise to the challenge. I look forward to seeing so many sailors enjoying the waters of Tampa Bay.
After hosting two Leadership Listens sessions so far, I am encouraged by the thoughtful feedback we have received. Our management team and staff continue to work diligently to refine and enhance the experience they deliver each day, and it is gratifying to hear directly from members that these efforts are being noticed. If you have not yet attended one of these sessions, I hope you will join us at the next meeting scheduled for February 11 at 5:30pm. Hearing about individual experiences and identifying areas for continued improvement is invaluable to both Management and the Board as we guide SPYC forward.
Continuing with the theme of improvement, we expect to receive feedback this month from a consultant engaged to conduct a comprehensive review of our food and beverage program. Your Board commissioned this study to identify opportunities to gain efficiencies, streamline operations, increase consistency, and ultimately deliver an experience our members will want to enjoy again and again. Because a portion of our annual dues subsidizes the food and beverage operation, it is important that these funds are used as thoughtfully and responsibly as possible.
On January 5, our management team hosted a post-holiday celebration for our staff, attended by your Flag Officers, to express our sincere appreciation for their dedication and commitment to serving our membership. Please join me in congratulating James Lane, who was voted 2025 Employee of the Year, as well as Julia Larsson and John Brown, who were recognized as runnersup. These awards are voted on by peers, making them a true testament to the recipients’ professionalism, teamwork, and service excellence. Congratulations to all!
Speaking of excellence, the Entertainment Committee hosted an exceptional Escoffier Dinner at the end of January. Our culinary team showcased their remarkable talent through a beautifully executed six-course dinner, thoughtfully paired with select beverages. Thank you to everyone who made this evening such a memorable success.
In January, the Building Reconstruction Oversight Committee (BROC) and the Board reached an important milestone by selecting a Construction Manager to guide us through the next phase of the architectural process. The Construction Manager will work closely with our Owner’s Representative and Architect to develop a true-cost budget as schematic design progresses over the coming months.
We will close out February by preparing for the 16th running of the St. Petersburg Grand Prix. Please be sure to make your raceparty reservations early, whether you plan to attend the indoor VIP event or enjoy the rooftop party in the garage.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Respectfully, Christian Bergstrom Commodore 2025-2026

The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation is
preparing for a busy and impactful Spring season.
At its most recent meeting, the Foundation Board approved three new grants; two dedicated to supporting our amateur racing sailors and one focused on community outreach-- further strengthening access and opportunity across our sailing programs.
The Foundation is committed to building a stronger, more inclusive sailing community. We support sailors of all ages and skill levels, from those just getting their sea legs to experienced competitors pursuing national and Olympic aspirations. Inspiring excellence through sailing is more than a motto—it’s our mission in action. Through hands-on programs, scholarships, and outreach initiatives, we create pathways for growth, confidence, and connection.
Whether participants find themselves on a dinghy, on a keelboat, or serving on the race committee, they gain lifelong skills and a deeper appreciation for the water and the community around it. This spring, we look forward to working closely with our valued community partners and grant recipients, including Academy Prep and the Warrior Sailing Program, as we continue to expand access and impact through sailing. You can help us share our mission by visiting our website, liking our social media pages, and following along as we head into an exciting season ahead.
MASTER PLAN UPDATE Project Progress & Leadership
We are actively engaged in planning for the replacement of the downtown clubhouse.
Our Owner’s Representative (“OR”) is playing a central role, guiding us through each stage of the process. Several highly qualified General Contractors have presented proposals to serve as our construction manager (“CM”). The findings and recommendations from these presentations were shared with the Building Replacement Oversight Committee (“BROC”) and with our Board of Directors. The selected CM will collaborate closely with our architect and OR during the design phases. The CM will be reviewing architectural plans, providing cost estimates, and assessing the feasibility of construction.
Member Communications
Member Feedback and Involvement
We remain committed to keeping our members informed about progress. Updates are regularly shared through Smooth Sailing articles, open member “Leadership Listens” sessions with Commodore Bergstrom, and other communication channels. Additionally, we have initiated a dedicated website to provide comprehensive information, including a question-and-answer page. While the website is currently under construction, further details will be released as development continues.
Funding and Financial Planning
Accumulation of the necessary funds for construction are ongoing, with contributions coming from quarterly Capital Contributions and Initiation Fees as outlined in the 2023 Master Plan. Once we obtain more precise cost estimates from our CM and OR, we will be able to provide members with an updated summary of the project’s cost and financing assumptions. We plan on having this information available in a few months.
The Long-Range Planning Committee is establishing a process to gather direct feedback from members regarding design elements and offerings for the new downtown clubhouse. More information on how to participate in this process will be available soon.
Oversight and Commitment
The BROC committee, Flag officers, and Board of Directors are dedicated to thoroughly evaluating all aspects of the new downtown clubhouse project. To ensure a positive outcome, an experienced team of advisors has been assembled that works closely with the internal BROC, Finance Committee, Flag officers, and the Board of Directors. Ongoing communication with members remains a top priority to ensure transparency and engagement throughout the project. Careful budgeting and stewardship of resources are central to our approach as we move forward with the new downtown clubhouse project.
MASTER DRIVER TEAM RACE
January 9 - 11
by Janet Walker, Chair
St Petersburg Yacht Club was honored to host the 18th Master Driver Team Race Regatta the weekend of Jan 10 -11. This year five teams of six sailors each from various parts of the USA, participated in J70s on Tampa Bay to compete in this 2 on 2, team sailboat racing event.
Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club has won the event for the past three years in a row. The gloves were off this year and there was stiff stimulating competition from all teams, but finally SPYC prevailed. Texas Corinthian Yacht Club came second with Seawanhaka Corinthian YC coming in third.
It is always fascinating to watch as two J70s battle competitively against an opposing team of two J70s on a short windward leeward course, taking approximately 13-15 minutes for each flight, in this round robin event. Three round robins were completed in varying weather conditions, from 4knots on Saturday, with gusts up to 20 knots, briefly, on the final day as a typical Tampa Bay front came through the course.
Four Umpires headed by Phil Pape, plus Tom Rinda and Bill Simons kept the rival, sometimes aggressive, boat handling within the rules and called the infractions and penalties.
Our Pro was Todd Fedyszyn, with RC of Barbara Mehaffey, Gina Bowden Pierce and Janet Walker (Chair), plus a mark boat with George Pennington and Paul Goodman. Bosun was Kyle Runnfeldt. Rich and Char Doyle, founders of this regatta, kept tabs on the proceeding from the shore. Many thanks go to the staff of the SPSC and SPYC for making this event a success.

USODA TEAM RACE MIDWINTERS 2026
An unforgettable weekend of teamwork, resilience, and world-class youth sailing on Tampa Bay!
From January 17–19, thirty-four teams took to the waters of Tampa Bay for the USODA Team Race Midwinters, a premier event serving as a qualifier for the Trofeo Marco Rizzotti Team Race.
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club entered four teams this year, aiming to defend last season’s win and earn another opportunity to travel back to Italy to defend their Trofeo Marco Rizzotti title.
What an incredible sight it was to see nearly 200 youth sailors weaving their way through the boat show and onto the racecourse. Saturday began with a high-pressure system parked over Florida, bringing light morning breezes before a southerly filled in during the afternoon, setting the stage for competitive racing.
Sunday started early, with sailors on the water well before sunrise to complete the first-round robin ahead of an approaching frontal system. As the front moved through, conditions built strong winds and sharp gusts rolled in while teams were safely ashore, a welcome pause before the next challenge.
Sailors headed back out later in cold, breezy conditions to wrap up Sunday’s racing, then returned on Monday in crisp temperatures for the final stages of the regatta. In a hard-fought finish, SPYC Thunder, Tucker Gowens, Dalton Cellamare, Thomas Weidner, Constantino Conrad and Byron Smith, reclaimed their victory as overall champions, earning the honor of once again representing the club on the international stage in Italy as they return to defend their title.
SALT PINES Regatta Recap
The Salt Pines Regatta, is a collaboration with our friends at Clearwater Yacht Club; things kicked-off with a light-wind start that turned into a beautiful evening sail to Clearwater. Smooth conditions, glowing skies, and a steady breeze made for the perfect night race across the bay.
Once ashore, the fun continued with a pirate-themed party that did not disappoint. From creative costumes to great dockside energy, the celebration was the perfect way to cap off an incredible race night. Enjoy some of our favorite moments from the water and the festivities—and congratulations to our top finishers!

The Broad Reachers continue meeting on the 2nd Saturday of each month for lunch and camaraderie. Our Annual Christmas Party & Gift Exchange was held on December 13th at Pass-aGrille. Attendance was small, but we had a great time. The weather was perfect for an outdoor lunch prior to our gift exchange. After several “trades” we all came away with something nice. Attending this year was Captain Gloria Davis, Race Captain Juliette Clark, Audrey Orgo, KT Trudeau, Charl Hadfield, & Carol Hansen
In December, Broad Reacher Katie Rodgers represented the Broads at the Salty Sisters “Naughty But Nice” FWSA Interclub as an Opti sailor. Unfortunately, the winds were not cooperative so there was no racing. The next interclub will be held in Venice, hosted by the Bitter Ends in February.
We are looking forward to the Annual FWSA Rainbow Regatta being held on April 27th this year in Clearwater, hosted by the Bow Chasers & Windlasses.
Come join us some Saturday morning for fun and lunch. We hope our weekly sailing will start-up again soon. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com .

Shooting a round of sporting clays is an every Friday activity of the Wing Shooters. Often referred to as "golf with shotguns", sporting clays is similar to golf in many ways. We use similar carts, both riding and push. The riding carts are essentially golf carts configured with four seats. The push carts, which add a bit of exercise, can look like baby strollers; although other styles are also used.
A sporting clays course can have up to 16 stations. Thrown targets, either 6 or 8, are shot at each station. Score is kept for the number of targets broken. Similar to holes in golf, each station provides a different test of your shooting skills. Targets can be thrown in any direction, at various speeds & inclinations. Some targets are even rolled on edge across the ground. Each sporting clays course has a total of 100 targets to be shot. Most sporting clays venues have a few different courses. Some for the novice shooter, others requiring increasing levels of skill.
This sport is becoming very popular. Just like golf, there are also sporting clays events set up as fund raisers. Several times every year the Wing Shooters will put together a few teams to participate in these charity events. It’s a day of doing something we all enjoy while raising money for a worthy cause.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Dave Miller at dmillerd@mac.com

The WC is delighted to kick-off our 2026 season with a lineup of informative, creative, and truly inspiring programs.
January’s Southern Soirée set the tone beautifully, offering gracious approaches to hosting filled with elevated, unique, and thoughtful details. Our wonderful crowd enjoyed the imaginative touches shared by Lydia Menzies, leaving us all inspired to entertain with heart and style.
February continues the excitement with “Chic Without Apology: An Evening of Bold Design”, featuring acclaimed designer Lisa Gilmore. Known for her signature style of livable glamour, Lisa creates spaces that tell stories, invite confidence, and make people feel their very best. Her work encourages us to design boldly, trust our instincts, and create homes we’re proud to share. As spring approaches, we are thrilled to welcome her fresh ideas and unexpected perspectives.

Bicycle Group
by Douglas Townes
On January 8th the Bicycle Group at SPYC had a nice ride from the Pass-a-Grille club to the Skyway Bridge fishing pier rest area. After riding 19 miles the group had lunch and a planning meeting at the PAG club. While at the park, the group took a photo around the USS Blackthorn Memorial
The USS Blackthorn was a Coast Guard ship that collided with the tanker ship Capricorn on January 28, 1980 resulting in 23 Coast Guardsmen fatalities. Each year on January 28, the Coast Guard has a remembrance service at the memorial. The public is invited to attend this annual service.
The Bicycle Group has a different ride each month. The rides are usually 20 – 30 miles long on mostly paved trails at a 12 – 14 mph pace. While all five members on this month’s ride were on ebikes, the rides are open to any kind of bicycle. Next month’s ride will be on February 12th at the north end of the Pinellas Trail. If you would like more information about riding with our group, please contact Douglas Townes at det949@mindspring.com.

Cruising Fleet News
by Jeff Cooper, Fleet Captain
The holiday season was a whirlwind of celebration for the Cruising Fleet! We kicked things off on December 12th at our annual party, welcoming new members Tom Coffey, Jeannie O’Grady, Tracy & Eunice Livingston, Tim Bryant, & Mike Walsh . The evening’s highest honor, the Vildibill Trophy , was awarded to Debbie Storey for her outstanding service. I was also privileged to present Debbie and Fleet Admiral Jay with their Fleet Captain burgee we had framed to recognize their incredible leadership over the last two years.
On December 13th, the Lighting of the Yachts turned the docks into a spectacular display of creativity. From the nostalgia of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on Never Ending Storey to the magic of "The Polar Express" on C Breeze , the effort was immense. Top honors went to Greg & Holly Rosica ( Frigate About It ) for Power Boats and Steve Shortt & Alica McManaman ( Hula Girl ) for Sail Boats.
Not to be outdone, our Daytrippers hosted a festive lunch at Parkshore Grill , where Kim Hansen & Suzie Dahl dazzled in the holiday fashion competition.
January was equally busy and informative. We were honored to host retired USCG rescue swimmer Mario Vittone, who provided a masterclass in sea survival and safety. We also enjoyed a highenergy "double-header" on January 29th, with Daytrippers dining at Fresco’s while 30 of our members cruised to Tampa to cheer the Lightning take on the Jets.
Looking Ahead to February:
The adventure continues with two back-to-back cruises to the Clearwater Yacht Club. Group 1 will head out February 20th–22nd, followed by Group 2 from February 27th–March 1st. Additionally, our Daytrippers are staying active with a visit to Doc Ford’s (Jungle Terrace) on February 26th.
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic start to the year.
See you on the water!

Salty Sisters
by PC Carol Hansen
December was a busy month for the Salty Sisters beginning with the very successful Christmas Boutique , then followed by the Annual Candy Cane Regatta with the Christmas Ornament Race , the Poker Run , & of course the Candy Cane Race . Awards for the Christmas Tree/Ornament race were given to Bijie Ding (1st place), Patti Kincer (2nd place), Renee Athey (3rd place), & Eunice Livingston (last place) for finding the shallowest part of the race course.
The following week the Salties held their FWSA Interclub event “Naughty But Nice”. FWSA 1st Delegate, Pat Burrows , thanked everyone who helped with the Interclub. There were 14 Sunfish and 13 Opti sailors along with over 20 Race Committee and volunteers. While they ultimately didn’t get to sail due to high winds and choppy water conditions, it still was a very successful event.
On Wednesday, December 17th, the Salty Sisters celebrated the holidays with their Annual Christmas Party, with this year’s theme being “Red and White”. Social Chair, PC Charl Hadfield , and her helpers did a marvelous job with decorations and creating a wonderful atmosphere.
As tradition goes, the newest class, “Class of 2024” aka the Hurricane Hellions performed their skit sailing around the stage in small “Optis”. Everyone enjoyed the show, the Christmas party, & all the festivities. Hurricane Hellions : Cathy Lasky, Lindsay Carter, Britt Madigan, and Jenny Roche.
PC Dee Gill is working with the Salties to start up a Sunfish program in the weeks to come. If you have a Sunfish that you would like to donate or sell to the Salty Sisters, please email Dee at deeinstpete@gmail.com

Ladies Beach Club
by Lisa S. Curtin, President
Ladies Beach Club members enjoyed an informative and inspiring February program on Florida Native Gardening , presented by gardener Cathy Wrigley, founder of the “Little Free Seed Stand”. Whether you are a balcony gardener or have a fully landscaped yard, gardening with native plants is a wonderful way to connect with nature while creating vital habitats for butterflies, birds, & other essential wildlife. Cathy shared practical tips that appealed to gardeners of all experience levels and left everyone feeling inspired to dig in— literally!
As a forward-moving club with an eye toward the future, the Ladies Beach Club Board also introduced members to several proposed Bylaw updates. These changes are designed to create additional ways for members to be involved, even if they are not able to attend every luncheon program. Voting on the proposed bylaw changes will take place at a future meeting. Our goal is to make this continually fast-growing club even more inclusive and appealing. As of this writing, Ladies Beach Club membership stands at an impressive 114 members!
