September also marks the return of several important Club traditions as we enter the final month of our fiscal year. While the Annual Meeting and Board of Directors election will take place in October, our first Meet the Candidates Night is scheduled for September 29th, followed by a second candidate forum on October 8th. I encourage every member to take part in this important process. These forums provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about the candidates, hear their perspectives, and understand how they hope to serve as your voice on the Board. Our Club is in the midst of one of the most significant chapters in its history. The vision currently being developed will help shape the future of SPYC for the next 100 years and beyond. Member engagement has never been more important, and I encourage everyone to participate in the discussions and election process. Finally, I would like to thank each of the candidates for their willingness to serve. Leadership at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club requires a significant investment of time, energy, and dedication, and we are grateful for those who have stepped forward to help guide our Club into its next century.

Dear Fellow SPYC Members...

ummer months always seem to pass quickly, and this year has been no exception. I hope everyone has enjoyed time together at the Club, on the water, and perhaps visiting other yacht clubs during your summer travels. It has been fun seeing the photographs of our members proudly carrying the SPYC burgee to numerous destinations, both near and far. Over the summer, our Sailing Center hosted 491 kids in our Summer Sailing Camps, and the Friday evening twilight sailing series wrapped up on August 28th. As we head into the fall season, activity around the Club is picking up again. On September 5th, we have Brews and BBQ on the calendar, which should be a fun and relaxing evening at the Club. On September 18th, we can look forward to Bourbon, Steak & Cigars. I hope you will come out and take advantage of all the Club has to offer. Admittedly, I am a creature of habit and tend to go back to the same things over and over. Taryn & I have made it a point to try different events this year, and we have really enjoyed meeting other members we previously have not known.

October also brings one of our most cherished traditions—the Adult Yachting Recognition Awards. Join us on the evening of October 13th at 5:30 pm, for this special award ceremony. These awards serve as an important reminder of our Club’s rich yachting heritage and provide an opportunity to celebrate the sailors, cruisers, race committee volunteers, and dedicated members who continue to uphold and strengthen that legacy. I hope you will join us as we honor this year’s recipients, celebrate their accomplishments, and thank them for their invaluable contributions to our Club and its enduring yachting tradition. The Building Redevelopment Oversight Committee continues its methodical and thoughtful work as the project advances through the schematic design phase. As this work progresses, we will continue to keep members informed through Smooth Sailing, Leadership Listens sessions, member forums, and project updates. Preparations for The Ocean Race’s arrival in St. Petersburg next May continues to gain momentum. Since the official countdown kicked off in early June, we have seen tremendous enthusiasm from across our community. Several key sponsors, community partners, and stakeholder organizations have stepped forward to support the event and become part of what promises to be a world-class celebration of sailing, sustainability, innovation, and our waterfront. The two-week stopover will provide an incredible opportunity to showcase St. Petersburg on the international stage while introducing thousands of visitors to our vibrant sailing community. It will also create meaningful opportunities for the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation to expand its impact through youth sailing initiatives, community outreach, STEM and marine science education, adaptive sailing experiences, and other sailing-related programs that align with the mission of The Ocean Race. As planning continues, we look forward to sharing additional details with our members. We cannot wait to welcome the sailing world to St. Petersburg! As the fiscal year wraps up, Taryn and I have begun the exciting tradition of planning the 2026 Commodore’s Ball, taking place on Saturday, November 14th! This year, we invite you to step into the mystery and elegance of The Phantom of the Opera for an unforgettable evening at SPYC. Reservations open October 1st. Be sure to watch your upcoming Club communications for additional details as we unveil more about this year’s celebration.

4TH OF JULY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION This past 4th Of July, the Club was honored once again to host the Color Guard from the United States Coast Guard. As they have done the past few years, the team presented the Colors during our program in the Ballroom, proceeded downstairs, and then lowered the flag in front of the Club, presenting it to Commodore Bergstrom. While it is always a moving ceremony, this year’s event was even more special in light of our country’s 250th Anniversary. We enjoyed the fellowship of the Guardsmen and their families, some of whom have joined us in previous years. Additionally, we were fortunate to meet the new Deputy Commander of Sector St. Petersburg, CDR Rivas and his family who just relocated to St. Petersburg that same week. The Club is very thankful for the strong partnership we are building with the USCG and we continue to honor their service and sacrifice on behalf of all of us.

BUILDING ON OUR TRADITION

s we continue planning for the future of our Club, one thing remains constant—our commitment to preserving the traditions and character that have defined this special place for more than a century. For generations, our Clubhouse has been where lifelong friendships have been formed, families have celebrated milestones, regattas have been won, and countless sunsets have been enjoyed. As we prepare for its next chapter, the spirit, traditions, and camaraderie that define SPYC will continue to guide every decision we make. This month, the Building Committee continued working through the schematic design phase with our architects, Construction Manager, Owner’s Representative, and Food & Beverage team. Together, we are refining the layout of the future Clubhouse with one simple goal: creating spaces that enhance the member experience while remaining true to who we are. Your feedback continues to be one of the most valuable parts of this process. Members have consistently shared a desire for inviting spaces where friends can enjoy a casual lunch overlooking the marina, families can gather after a day on the water, and everyone can take advantage of our spectacular waterfront setting. The design reflects those priorities with expanded outdoor gathering areas, enhanced views of the harbor and parks, and a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Members have also emphasized the importance of offering a variety of gathering spaces that support the many ways our Club is enjoyed. Whether meeting friends for dinner, celebrating with family, or relaxing over cocktails in a quieter setting, the design is intended to provide choices while preserving the welcoming atmosphere that has always defined SPYC. Behind the scenes, our Construction Manager and Owner’s Representative continue refining project costs as the design evolves, helping ensure that member priorities are balanced with responsible financial stewardship. Once the next phase of space planning and updated cost information is complete, we will host additional member information sessions to share our progress, answer questions, and gather further feedback. Although construction remains approximately two years away, planning for the transition has already begun. A Temporary Clubhouse Team is being formed to explore creative ideas for dining, social events, and member activities that will keep Club life active and enjoyable throughout the construction period. As the vision continues to take shape, so does our excitement. Enhanced food and beverage offerings, improved event spaces, inviting gathering areas, spectacular waterfront views, a larger pool and expanded pool deck, and more efficient kitchens are all being designed to enrich the experiences our members value most.

Every decision we make is guided by a simple question: Will this strengthen our Club for the next generation? For more than 100 years, SPYC has been defined not by its building, but by its people, its traditions, and its passion for yachting. Our responsibility is to honor that legacy while creating a Clubhouse worthy of the next 100 years. For Seventy-Five Years the SALTY SISTERS have been Sailing, Socializing & Supporting SPYC and Surrounding Community!

* * * SUPPORTIng * * * Along with sailing and social activities, the Salty Sisters support the SPYC and many community and national organizations. They’re involved in every facet of regatta work and are the mainstay of SPYC Race Committee. Their presence is felt throughout the Club, where they actively participate in and help facilitate many of its functions. In addition, they contribute to numerous sailing events and philanthropic efforts both locally and nationally. Regattas: The Salties evolved quickly from serving as Galley Mates to race officers and everything in-between. Pat Seidenspinner became the first woman PRO [Principal Race Officer] in an Olympics, and in 2000 the first woman commodore of this Club.  Philanthropic Contributions: The Salty Sisters have a long tradition of giving back to the community through a wide range of philanthropic efforts: the Nauticats singing group brings music and joy to retirement communities; other members support historical, cultural, orchestral & operatic societies and many serve as docents, officers & board members for many of these organizations.

REPORT OF NOMINATING COMMITTEE The Annual Meeting of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club will be held on Tuesday - October 13, 2026 At this meeting the following business will be transacted: • Election of Directors • Annual Reports of Officers and Members of the Executive Committee • Reading of Communications • And other such business as may properly come before the meeting • Refreshments will be served following the meeting

NOTICE—Absentee Ballot for Annual Election

As prescribed in the Club Bylaws (Article IV, Section 5), any member entitled to vote who desires to vote by Absentee Ballot may, within TWO WEEKS PRIOR ELECTION DAY (beginning Tuesday, September 29th), procure from the Secretary an absentee ballot, which shall be duly noted for the member (Ballots are available in the Membership Office). Any member whose dues, house account, or other indebtedness to the Club has not been paid in full thirty (30 )days after being billed for the same, shall not be deemed a “member in good standing”.

House Rule #27 Pertaining to Election: In reference to Club elections, there shall be no written voting recommendations or other candidate slate suggestions passed out on the Yacht Club premises.

e are proud to recognize Tommy Rockhill as our July Employee of the Month! For many longtime members, Tommy is a familiar face around the St. Petersburg Yacht Club waterfront. His connection to the Club spans years, including time as a member of our Sailing Center team and recognition as SPYC’s Employee of the Year in 2014. After spending time away from the Club, Tommy returned to the waterfront team, bringing with him an even greater depth of marine knowledge and hands-on experience. From fishing and general maintenance to boat repairs and engine work, Tommy is one of those team members who understands just how many moving pieces it takes to keep a busy waterfront operation running. More importantly, Tommy brings a willingness to jump in wherever he is needed. Whether assisting a member, helping troubleshoot an issue with a boat, or supporting his fellow team members behind the scenes, his experience and familiarity with our waterfront make him an invaluable resource. Having Tommy back at SPYC has also meant welcoming back a trusted and familiar face for many of our members. His knowledge of the Club, our boats, and our waterfront community reflects the kind of experience that simply cannot be taught overnight. he mid-summer season brought a magnificent turnout for the Cruising Fleet’s activities. Our centerpiece event, the July 3rd–5th cruise to the SPYC Downtown Marina, saw 20 vessels and 36 members gather under the expert direction of Neil and Stacey Wilson. This festive holiday weekend provided a picturesque backdrop for members to enjoy docktails and vibrant conversation along the waterfront. In August, the fleet journeyed to the Longboat Key Club Moorings. Thirteen vessels and 26 members embraced the opportunity to relax at this Caribbean-style resort, conveniently located just around the corner from home. Debbie Storey and Jay Mabrey served as Port Directors.

The Daytrippers also enjoyed a successful monthly dock-n-dine at Red, White, and Booze in Pass-a-Grille. More than 15 members participated in this wonderful waterfront dining experience. As we look to the horizon, our calendar is filled with exciting upcoming cruises and social gatherings. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to our newest members: Brian & Kandi Chapman, Joe Chilberg, Sandra Houghton, and Julie & Steve Moore. We look forward to seeing everyone on our future voyages.

he Salty Sisters celebrated the 4th of July with a splash at the pool, enjoying a fun-filled afternoon followed by lunch and a spirited sing-along of great American songs, led by Sigrid Pavone and Past Captain Ellen Pavone. In honor of our country’s 250th Anniversary, Past Captain Connie Beckman read the Preamble to the Constitution, adding a special patriotic touch to the celebration.

While the Salty Sisters are still sailing this summer— participating in the Twilight Series and enjoying plenty of fun out on the water—many have also been busy traveling. Celebrating 4th of July Jill Bridges explored the western U.S., including Utah, where she proudly showed off her Salty Burgee, and even rode the waves at the Kelly Slater Surf Ranch in California! Lori Hodges and Jopie Helsen took their boat north to New England for the summer, visiting several of our reciprocal yacht clubs along the way. Meanwhile, Juliette Clark, Suzanne Boohar and Audrey Orgo enjoyed a visit to Village Tavern in Salem, Massachusetts.

The Saltys are looking forward to another exciting sailing season, kicking things off with our Welcome Back Party on September 9th. We can’t wait to reconnect, share our summer adventures, and get back on the water together!

he Wine Club is an intimate, member-based group devoted exclusively to wine education and exploration. It brings together individuals who share a passion for wine and a desire to deepen their understanding in a refined yet welcoming environment. Members experience thoughtfully guided tastings featuring wines from boutique wineries and thoughtfully selected producers, expanding their knowledge while enjoying meaningful conversation with like-minded enthusiasts. The club meets every other month on the first Thursday, for a total of six gatherings each year. Each meeting is a curated tasting experience rather than a traditional wine dinner. To encourage curiosity and open-minded discovery, wines and menus are intentionally not disclosed in advance. Membership is currently at capacity; however, inquiries from prospective members are being accepted for future availability. e have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. In addition throughout the year our group will ride several continents as well. Recently our group just completed another several weeks of incredible scenic riding. If you look at the map, and the Rockies itinerary, you can see the states we covered as well as Canada. We learned occasional roadblocks occur - and bear spray repellant was recommended. We drew straws to determine who would actually spray the bear if needed. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did! he 1957 New England Trail Horse Champion pictured is the Wing Shooter tagged Money Man (aka Jack Cartier). After high school Jack served in the Air Force. A height issue disqualified his pilot ambitions and Jack ended up as an administrator at Langley Air Force Base. His job was to issue all leave passes, which included himself, every weekend. While at Langley Jack took up shotgun shooting. After his military service he picked up an accounting degree at USF in 1978 and his CPA in 1981. After 9 years with a big accounting firm, Jack and a coworker split off and formed Carter and Cartier. This firm transitioned to Cartier CPAs, a family dominated business in St. Petersburg currently run by Jack’s daughter and son, Danielle and John, both CPAs. Jack joined the Yacht Club in 1971 and was an early member of the Wing Shooter’s Society. When he agreed to manage dues and the expenses of the Wing Shooter’s, he was tagged Money Man. He served this role for more than a decade only recently handing over the financial reins to Greg Rosica, who is tagged The Collector. How do you join the Wing Shooters? Gag Grouper season this year is the entire month of September, and we are proud to announce it as the Saltwater Angler’s FOM: Size & Growth: • Can grow up to 48 inches long. • Can weigh over 50 pounds. • Typically reach maturity around 4–5 years of age. Diet: • Feed on a variety of prey including fish, squid, crabs, and lobsters. • Their powerful jaws allow them to crush and consume hard-shelled crustaceans. Habitat & Range: • •

Commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the southeastern United States. Inhabit reefs, wrecks, rocky ledges, and other hard-bottom structures in depths ranging from about 20 to 200 feet.

Angler Tips: • •

Live bait such as pinfish, grunts, or pogies works well near bottom structure. Be prepared for a strong fight—Gag Grouper are powerful fish that will test your gear.
