Stotfold shows great community spirit when it matterslocal family the Calvers can most cer tainly testify for this as they have faced a challenging time over the last few months. After suffering some serious health complications, Mum of four Kirstie, finds herself unable to be left alone for any period of time meaning Husband Dan has had to put his Carpentr y business on hold and find an alternative source of income for the forseeable future
Dan has launched his own car detailing business which he can easily run from his home on Astwick Road “Being at home for Kirstie is the most impor tant thing right now” Dan told the Stotfold News Magazine. “We still have a long journey ahead and so I have had to switch to my second passion - which is car detailing in order to keep the family afloat during what has been a ver y tricky time.”
“Dan’s Detailing offers a second to none ser vice, including options for both exterior and interior cleaning” Dan told the magazine. I have always had a passion for cars and for making them look their ver y best and am willing to tailor my ser vice to any individual requirement ” With pricing star ting from as little as £15.00
Dan can be contacted using the contact details below
Now that the clocks have gone back, our daylight hours are diminishing as we head towards the Winter Solstice Many of us find the long, cold, dark days of Winter a challenge to navigate The additional difficulties around excessive rain with the flooding implications, can add to these as we’ve recently seen While it can be easy to hunker down and hibernate during these months, it can also be helpful to remind ourselves of the basics that suppor t our mental and emotional health We may need to be more intentional and proactive about practising good self-care to keep our spirits up at this time With less daylight hours on offer, it’s impor tant to prioritise getting outside even for shor t periods on a lunch break or at the weekends Time out in nature, when suitably wrapped up for the weather can really calm our often- stressed-out systems Even a shor t twenty-minute walk outside has been shown to lift us
Last time I spoke of ‘glimmers’ and this is the time to seek to see and savour the Winter wonders on offer The act of moving/walking par ticularly with friends and even better with the four-legged, tail wagging variety can be a real pleasure Winter offers to wow us with all the ever-changing scenes of nature As the temperatures drop, there’s the mesmerising, soothing powers of a real fire To get lost in the movement and colour of the flames can be deeply relaxing
As always, remaining connected to trusted friends is of paramount impor tance. This is even more true if you struggle with Winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Again, it may be necessar y to be more intentional about meeting up with loved ones to relax, talk, share highs and lows and eat home -made winter warming food together.

Each m onth we like to introduce you to another of ou r wonderfu l Arlesey & Stotfold Ne ws Magazine ad ve rtisers - this m onth we are talk ing to familiar face to many, Emma Azzopardi from Box of Cakes
Emma, Box Of Cakes star ted it's journey primarily as a baking business - can you talk us through how the business ended up how it is today? After many years as a home -based baker, it was time to find premises as I needed more space. We began with just cakes, coffee and snacks and after a shor t while, due to the amount of customer suppor t and requests, we added to our menu. As we became bigger and busier, we extended hours and added breakfast too along with takeaway. I then took on extra staff to still enable me to keep my hand in making celebration and wedding cakes
Box of Cakes has always been a community business that cares (your Covid care packages you were a prime example of this) - What do you enjoy most about being such a large par t of the local community? Being involved in suppor ting businesses, schools and charities with sponsorship, raffle prizes and gifts and par ticipating in community events when they arise. It's great to see the children growing up that visit us here on a regular basis and you really get to know families and their pets too
If you could bake one thing which contained all of your most favourite ingredients togetherwhat would this be and why? I was about to reply our Pina Colada cake because I absolutely love pineapple and coconut (reminds me of my honeymoon) however its missing a couple of ingredients that I also love, so without a doubt, 'Hummingbird cake' It's SO good, and not sickly sweet so an all day cake, but I believe any time is the right time for cake!!
Your working day star ts ridiculously early - if you had chance to bake something spectacular for three special people - who would they be and why? Wow, this one made me think David Attenborough, what an icon, I would love to create a Natural World masterpiece, with so much scope for colours, textures and structural design
Roald Dahl - He represents ever y thing Chocolate, colour ful, funny, weird and wonder ful, proving imagination has no limitations and lastly Henr y Cavill - just because!!!
We know you are an incredibly busy person and like to travel - Where in the world do you feel has the best food and what are your favourite dishes to enjoy?
This one is ver y easy for me... Italy! Most of my best memories are linked to great food here, incredible Pizza and Gelato in Sardinia, Antipasti and Pasta in Rome, amazing porchini risotto in Venice, apres ski Lemoncello in Livigno and the best coffee in Murano (think I had five!) and its so true when things are made with love, passion and local fresh produce, it makes you want to return again and again!
We love to learn more ab ou t ou r wonde rfu l m agazine advertisers! If you have a local business and would like to par ticipate in a future LOCAL LIFE feature then get in touch!

After the incredibly wet weather at the end of September we have seen a real change on the paths and in the reser ves Many of the lower lying walks have been under water and the flood plains surrounding our rivers inundated
Sadly, in some areas this has adversely affected many local people in surrounding villages as homes and cars have been flooded and local roads closed The flood aler ts provided by CBC and the Environment Agency have been a good source of information and no doubt kept the Pix Brook River Wardens busy
The two watercourses most affecting Arlesey are our local chalk streams, Pix Brook and the River Hiz (Pix Brook is pictured here only 3 hours apar t)
For the most par t the local wetland and flood plains coped with the excess water as planned but unfor tunately saw a significant amount of water from the Hiz cover the railway station car park on the Western/Henlow side Whilst one work par ty was postponed due to the weather, more for our volunteers comfor t than any thing else, we managed two work par ties in September, clearing the entrance to the Glebe Meadows
On the 7th of September we had a sunny and dr y day for the 1st Arlesey Scout’s Fair at which we had a stand Thank you to the Scouts for allowing us to have the stand It was a great oppor tunity to share what we are about and discuss the past and current effor ts to secure green spaces locally Thank you to ever yone who helped on the day and who visited our display We were able to secure three more volunteers and some donations via the ACORN Treasure Map and the sale of our window stickers The main prize was a takeaway meal for two, kindly donated by our sponsors, The Millenium Chinese Takeaway on the High Street Well done to our winner, Keith!
During September and October we conducted a full stocktake of the machines and equipment held by ACORN to document these against records and ser vice schedules We were able to confirm that we are resourced for the coming season and have a good understanding of what we may need going for ward. As we go into Autumn and the Winter months, we will be looking to ensure paths are repaired and clear ready for the next major growth. So if you would like to help or nominate an area for our attention, please post on our Facebook page or drop us a line. Thanks are again passed to our volunteers, Footpath Champions and ever yone who has helped recently to collect litter, clear a path or maintain them just by walking along them Keep it up! It’s been another ver y busy month for us at the project. September has seen a large number of referrals come in to us721, which is about 120 more than August. There have been over 415 top up bags of the best before items, which would normally other wise have gone in the bin.
We are truly grateful for our amazing suppor t as usual. We are so grateful for the thoughts and especially the prayers, which help and are so impor tant. Also, the practical suppor t, be it through donations or just a smiling face. We continue to see many people at our doors during the week and it always makes us happy that the top up bags of best before going out, rather than binned
We now have nearly 18,000 items towards our total goal of 30,000 tins and we are amazed by how much we been given We are going to extend it through October because of the church and school har vest festivals We have already star ted preparing for Christmas We will be ver y ver y busy as usual I would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers, throughout the project, which without them, we would not be able to function They are truly a real blessing to me and ever y one of them goes the extra mile
Moving onto the new building. It seems a little bit like a long process to me, but things are moving along. Hopefully, we will get the keys soon and can star t to develop the building into what we feel is right. It is still to be a place of Christian worship, but also our new home and we will be able to develop a space for the community, which can be used by all.
As we pray ever y morning at the Project, we ask for God’s guidance in all that we are doing and all the decisions we make and in ever y conversation with ever y person. We know things are really hard for so many people and it doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, but we are tr ying to do what we can with what we’ve got, and we are always happy to talk to people
Please pop in and see us and ask what we are doing Thank you again for ever y thing you do for us, and I pray you have a blessed month We pray we will bless people, and we will continue to be blessed by others We thank God for his incredible provision
Thank you
Gordon - Praise God always

Gifford won the best choreography award, with judges also singling out individual GDA dancers for their outstanding talent To complete a wonder ful day, the junior small group won the whole event with their beautiful lyrical routine! The season is not over yet and we look for ward to what is yet to come!
Our classes are held in Henlow, Stotfold & Fair field www.gifforddanceacademy.com
