Loc al Fundraisers Need Our Help For Some Great Causes!

For most people, the New Year brings about a desire to do better and help make a difference. We wanted to share the stories of two of our Stotfold News readers who hope to do exactly this during 2026 - both for fantastic causes.

David Ward is a keen cyclist and after his mother sadly passed away in recent years, he chose to focus on finding a way to combine the spor t he loved with a challenge which would help raise funds for Alzheimers & Dementia - causes ver y close to his hear t. In May/June of this year, David will be embarking on a 6,000 bike ride across some of the largest land mass in the world throughout Canada David plans to star t at either British Columbia or Skagway in Alaska, both of which are incredibly remote areas of the world….and riddled with Grizzly Bears! The ride is expected to take David 3 5 months to complete David will be fundraising via sponsorship and providing regular updates along the way He told the Stotfold News Magazine, “I hope your readers might consider joining me in a fight to find a cure ” “Any contribution irrespective of amount will be greatly appreciated ”

To follow David’s journey look him up under: https://www.justgiving.com/page/acrosscanadaforalzheim ersresearch?utm medium=FR&utm source=WA

Secondly. 16 year old Ben Jar vis will be using 2026 to raise money to volunteer on a wildlife conser vation project in Peru later this year Ben has been given the oppor tunity to volunteer on a teen-focused rainforest conser vation project which he is incredibly excited about. Ben told the magazine ”To par ticipate in this project, I need to raise up to £2,500, which will cover the placement,

flights (six in total!), and essential equipment I am personally contributing £500 from my Christmas job, and I am actively seeking additional par t- time work ”

“I will also be selling books and other personal items, alongside organising fundraising events and seeking sponsorship ” We wish Ben all the ver y best of luck with his fundraising - to find out more you can visit: https://gofund me/c61dcdf30

rom the Need Project Coffee Time

e take the opportunity to catch u p ect m anager at the Need proje ct.

1. Ellie, you have taken over from Gordon as Project leader at the Need Project as of this month - It's obviously a ver y exciting and challenging role (with big shoes to fill as I'm sure you are aware!) What is it you are most looking for ward to doing and why?

Stepping into this role is both a real privilege and a responsibility, especially following in Gordons footsteps and the incredible work he has done. I am ver y aware of the big shoes I am stepping into, but I’m genuinely excited about what God has in store for the next season of The Need Project and myself. Being par t of that season, and helping to shape and grow it, is something I’m really looking for ward to

2 The New Year is a great time to star t in a new role - it has also coincided per fectly with the recent move of the Need Project in to your new premises How has the move been and how do you see it changing the way the Need Project functions going for ward?

It really does feel like per fect timing – a new year, new role and a new building! The move had gone really well overall, and I’m thankful for ever yone who helped and made it happen There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes, and it has been great to see it all come together The new premises gives us more space and better facilities, which makes a big difference to how we operate day to day Looking ahead I think the move and new premises will help us ser ve people even better As a team we embrace and are excited by change However, the core of the project is to feed those in need, and this will remain our priority

3. The Need Project is already working ver y hard to cope with the volume of people in our community that are vulnerable and need assistance - How do you see the year ahead looking and do you have any plans in place to help cope with the increases we are currently seeing for the ser vice you provide?

It’s ver y clear that the level of need in our community is still ver y high, and sadly that doesn’t look like it is going to change any time soon. I think the year ahead will continue being ver y busy and challenging. That said, we are not going into it without a plan or without hope Our focus this year is strengthening what we already do – making sure our systems, volunteers and resources are being used in the best ways possible so we can cope with the demand We are also looking at how we can build stronger par tnerships with local organisations, suppor ters and ser vices, because ultimately this kind of work is better done together

We are also being proactive about resourcing, thinking ahead about stock, funding and sustainability. We are trusting God to keep providing – as he always has – and to guide us in the work we do.

4.On a more personal level, the role you have taken on could be seen as extremely challenging at times. Outside of work hours, how do you choose to relax and unwind in order to keep ever y thing equally balanced?

You are right – this role can be challenging and its impor tant to be able to step back and recharge. I really value time with family and friends, and love walking with my dog Bruce! These things help me pause, breathe and return to a new working week with perspective and optimism

5 We look for ward to seeing more of you in and around Stotfold over the coming weeks and look for ward to learning more about you as time goes on Just for fun, if you could sum up yourself in three words what would they be and why?

Organised – because being proactive allows time for reactivity in times which we will encounter Keeping things running smoothly in my new role takes a bit of planning! Hopeful – I genuinely believe kindness and compassion make a big difference, and faith keeps me looking for ward Chatty – well I love connecting with people, hearing their stories and having a good laugh whenever I can

Thank you Ellie for taking the time to chat to us in what is a hugely busy time for the project. You can find the ‘final word’ from Gordon on Page 32 of this issue as he provides his fianl update for us from the Need Project.

Keep Stotfold Safe During Power Cuts Register Yourself or Someone You

Care About Today

As some of us know from early Januar y, power cuts can happen at any time, and for some residents, they can be more than just an inconvenience If you or someone you care about would struggle during a power outage, the Priority Ser vices Register (PSR) is here to help

The PSR is a free ser vice offered by energy providers to ensure that vulnerable customers receive extra suppor t when the lights go out This includes people who are elderly, have health conditions, or rely on electricity for medical equipment By registering, you can access benefits such as advanced notifications of planned outages, priority updates during emergencies, and tailored assistance when needed

Impor tantly, you can also register on behalf of a family member, friend, or neighbour. This simple act could make a big difference to someone’s safety and comfor t during a power cut.

Signing up is quick and easy. Visit your energy provider ’s website or call their customer ser vice team to add your details. If you’re unsure where to star t, Stotfold Town Council can provide guidance.

Let’s work together to make sure no one in our community is left in the dark If you know someone who could benefit, please encourage them to join the Priority Ser vices Register today For more information, visit: https://customer nationalgrid co uk/advice -andguidance/priority- ser vices/priority- ser vices -register/

Dear Editor,

I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the dog owners who clear up after their dogs Wouldn’t it be amazing if all dog owners did that and you didn’t have to watch where you were walking?

How about a New Year ’s resoloution and make Stotfold beautiful and always clear up after your dog! Even if you have to stop scrolling on your phone, even if no-one is around and even if it is after dark! That would be amazing! From Mum of one

Dear Editor,

Referring to Mr Draycotts reminiscences, I think the Phil Randall mentioned was the lady that Miss Roser (Headmistress at St Mar y’s School) lived with in Queen Street.

I think the two photographs are Arlesey Road and The Chequers.

Keep up the wonder ful work with the Stotfold News Magazine!

Respite at Home West Mid Beds & Ivel Valley:
Katie helping on one of our Luna fundraising stands over Christmas

Make 2026 the year you volunteer!

Why I volunteer at Fifth Stotfold Rainbows - written by Sarah Church I had always wanted to give to the community in some way and because my daughters were doing their Duke of Edinburgh awards, I thought of volunteering myself. I have made lifelong friends with an amazing group of people who have made a real difference in my life. What do we get up to?

We play games, teach the girls crafts and skills and work towards various badges. We take the girls on local visits and also attend district events run by Her tfordshire and Anglia Guiding We like to get involved with as many community events as possible, such as Stotfest, Remembrance Day and the Christmas Tree festival. We suppor t girls and young women to develop and to get their Duke Of Edinburgh awards. These aptitudes are good for their CV

What have I learnt:

I have learnt to work with children in a leadership role To plan a programme of activities, to manage a charity bank account, to complete risk assessments, girl guide training, eLearning courses, and first aid among other invaluable life skills. What would I love to happen next?

I would like to encourage more parents and community members to become regular volunteers There are a whole variety of roles that could be suppor ted, whether it would be posting about us on social media,

setting up a Stotfold Rangers Unit for girls over 14, helping to plan large events or auditing our bank accounts. There really is a role for ever yone It really is one of the most rewarding choices I have made in life Stotfold Girl Guiding: Currently we have lots of groups needing more help throughout the week. Are you looking for a volunteering role which gives huge reward!

The following groups are slightly different in that presently, they need adult ladies who are prepared to under take leadership training

These are, 2nd Stotfold Rainbowsunit leader, around 3 hours a week

( This will close in the summer )

3rd Stotfold Brownies - unit leader, around 3 hours a week

In loving memor y of Mark Chapman 1973-2025

Mark was the four th child of John and Esther Chapman, born on 1st June 1973. At that time, ultrasound screening for congenital conditions was not routine, so our parents had no indication before his bir th that he had Down Syndrome Shor tly after he arrived, he was taken into another room without explanation When the midwife returned, she informed our parents of his diagnosis and asked “Are you sure you want him?” Of course they did! He was their baby, and they loved him unconditionally

Special tribute

Mark was a beautiful baby, and Mum and Dad devoted themselves entirely to caring for him They were wonder fully patient and understanding utterly committed to giving him the fullest and happiest life possible Mark was ver y affectionate from a young age Whether he was visiting Hitchin market on a Saturday or on the beach at Winter ton or Greatstone, he would slow us all down in his determined mission to hug as many ladies as he possibly could Mark joyfully greeting strangers with open arms and a beaming smile As he grew, Mark thrived He began attending Sunnyside Special Needs School in Biggleswade at the age of four and remained there until he was eighteen He then went on to the Adult Training Centre (also in Biggleswade), which became a major par t of his life, later becoming involved in the Bistro and the Stitch Shop in Stotfold.

Mark lived along Arlesey Road in Stotfold until 1991, and moved with our parents to The Green. Dad was a long - standing Stotfold figure as a farmer at Manor Farm. Mark loved to visit Dad in the fields and when Dad later changed direction and ran a printing business from the farm, Mark continued to enjoy being around him and watching ever y thing happen. In his younger years, when he had ideas about learning to drive, he once backed Dad’s car into the wall at Arlesey Road and kept revving it even as Dad rushed out Mark also had no sense of urgency – his bus would arrive each morning and wait patiently while he slowly wandered down the long driveway, without the slightest concern for the timetable

Mark could often been seen walking around Stotfold to One -Stop for his newspaper On one occasion he discovered the shop had sold out and when the shopkeeper innocently told him which customer had bought the last one, Mark marched straight round to their house to retrieve it A rather confused homeowner consequently called the police!

Mark found losing both Dad in 2016 and Mum in 2021 incredibly difficult; he was deeply devoted to them and remained so throughout his whole life He would visit their grave at the Cemeter y and kept cherished photos on his phone. It is so fitting he is now buried beside them. Mark lived with his sister Anna until suitable suppor ted living accommodation became available. He moved into his

new home in Biggleswade in May 2022 Mark began working at Stotfold Co-op in 2006 and was incredibly proud of his job. We remain so grateful for the love and understanding extended to him at the Co-op.

Music was one of the biggest joys of Mark’s life. He taught himself to play the organ because he loved listening to Dad play. At the Adult Centre’s Christmas par ty, just days before he passed away, he played Silent Night in his Christmas jumper. We have a shor t video of this, which is now a deeply treasured memor y.

Faith was central to Mark’s life Ever y week he attended the worship ser vices at Hope Baptist Chapel, Stotfold, and made many dear friends Mark also loved travelling abroad Only a few weeks before he died, we asked if he fancied a little break, expecting him to say “Eastbourne ” He replied, “New York would be nice!” Little did we know he would soon leave us for a far better place than even that

Sadly, Mark passed away unexpectedly on 10th December 2025 As a family, we are still coming to terms with his loss yet we take great comfor t knowing he is safe in heaven We would like to thank the many local friends, neighbours, colleagues, church members and carers who suppor ted Mark throughout his life and who have reached out to us with such kindness since he passed away We are also deeply thankful to ever yone who attended his funeral and to all who helped us honour his memor y

Mark will be missed more than words can say. He was created how God intended and we were privileged to be his siblings Sleep well, our darling brother.

Mark per fecting his driving skills

News from the Mill.

The Mill’s Preparations for Spring!

Save the Dates!

First Open Mill of 2026: 29th March

Steam Fair and Countr y Show: 9-10th May

Live at the Mill: Friday 8th May

Working Steam Weekend: 10-11th October

Historically, the star t of a new year and the months of Januar y and Februar y were especially impor tant for milling, as winter rainfall and early spring snowmelt helped replenish the river, ensuring sufficient water flow to turn the wheel consistently In the past, agreements over milling rights, rents, and grain processing were often renewed at the year ’s beginning, making it a crucial time for planning and stability

Now, as in the past, our Head Miller, Ray Kilby, uses this period to assess water levels, repair mill machiner y, clear channels, and prepare for getting Stotfold Mill wheel turning again in the Spring. Similarly, our teams of volunteers kick off the year with planning for our Open Mill Days, tours, visits and major events. We are interested to hear from traders and owners of vintage steam engines, and other vehicles - and are keen to bring new and different attractions to our programme each year. The power of steam has been synonymous with Stotfold Mill for decades. In 1887, Stotfold-born John Randall, after first renting the mill from the Vaughan family, bought the Mill outright and embarked on significant improvements to the milling operation. Under his ownership, a steam engine was installed to supplement water power and machiner y was modernised, reflecting industrial advances of the time Since then, the terrible fire of 1992 destroyed most of this machiner y and much of it had to be rebuilt by our team of volunteers – many of whom still actively contribute to keeping the wheels turning year after year

We really hope that 2026 brings with it plenty of oppor tunities to enjoy the outdoors and immerse yourself in our shared local histor y We look for ward to welcoming you into the Mill again next month and encourage you to bring your friends and family to a Mill Open Day, a walk around our Nature Reser ve or to one of our legendar y major event weekends

We look for ward to seeing you soon!

News from Roecroft Lower School

It has cer tainly been an incredibly wintr y star t to 2026 The children all returned to school well rested and ready for a full term of learning and fun

This month we have an update from our KS2 team:

Year 3 have made a fantastic star t to the Spring term, returning to school in Januar y We launched the term by diving into the world of my ths and legends, exploring a range of traditional tales before focusing on The Tiger Child In French, pupils have continued to build their confidence by learning to count up to twelve and practising simple conversational phrases Our Ar t lessons have been inspired by the striking work of Georgia O’Keeffe The children explored how she used shape, tone and shading in her drawings before practising these techniques in their own sketch work. In Geography, we began our learning about land use. The children loved working with Ordnance Sur vey maps, comparing urban and rural areas of the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, in Computing, pupils have been strengthening their coding abilities using programs such as Scratch.

Year 4 have also kicked off the year with great enthusiasm, par ticularly in Histor y, where they have been exploring the impact of the Romans on Britain. The children have been fascinated to learn about Roman roads, many of which still influence our modern transpor t network, as well as their advances in building techniques, food and hygiene. Our learning will soon focus on the discover y of Dicket Mead, now known as the Welwyn Roman Baths, and we are ver y much looking for ward to visiting the site to experience this histor y first hand

In Design and Technology, pupils are investigating mechanisms and putting their knowledge into practice by designing and building moving cars They will be incorporating circuits from Science, developing their wood cutting skills and learning how to strengthen joints, all leading to an exciting race at the end of the project

Finally, in English, Year 4 have been immersed in poetr y They have enjoyed reading, discussing and per forming a wide variety of poems, with par ticular favourites including Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen and Walking My Iguana by Brian Moses Their growing confidence and expressive skills have shone through in ever y per formance

Wising you all a healthy and cosy Februar y, Mrs Cross

Year 4 enjoyed learning about the Romans

There has been a distinct buzz in the hallways this past month: The days are getting (slightly) longer, the energy is high, and it has been an absolute joy to welcome our students back for the star t of the Spring Term.

I had the privilege of leading our Welcome Back Assemblies. The star t of a new year is naturally a time for reflection a chance to look back at the Autumn Term and think about the small tweaks and changes we can make to be even better versions of ourselves I spoke to the students about the concept of a "Leap of Faith" and shared how true learning often happens when we step out of our comfor t zones We want Pix Brook to be a nur turing space where students

News from Pixbrook A c ademy

feel safe enough to take risks and brave enough to make mistakes After all, making a mistake isn’t a failure; it’s a vital stepping stone to growth.

We have cer tainly hit the ground running this term with another packed calendar designed to enrich our students' lives beyond the classroom.

Our choir headed to the O2 for Young Voices, which is a highlight for many! We could not be prouder of their energy and enthusiasm! Dr Bike has visited to ensure our cyclists are riding safely to and from school

Our Year 10s went on an inspiring Ar t Trip, broadening their creative horizons and our Year 11s have been working

incredibly hard ahead of their final mock exams

Excitement is reaching fever pitch for the Februar y Half-Term Ski Trip. It promises to be an unforgettable adventure (and a literal leap of faith on the slopes!). We wish all those venturing abroad a safe and memorable visit. I cannot wait to see the photos and hear stories of their adventures.

Thank you to our wider community for your continued suppor t

We look for ward to updating you on all of our news once again next month!

News from St Mar y’s A c ademy

All donations raised will go towards the IT fund to purchase more technology

for use in school.

Our school clubs are all well under way with some new activities available as the children settle back into the new term. In Februar y our Year 4 children will be par ticipating in the 2026 Young Voices Concer t. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and marks the star t of a for ty-day period leading up to to Easter. Many people associate Lent with giving something up, but it can also be a time for taking something on – slowing down and for reflection As a church, Lent offers us a chance to pause amid busy lives, to reflect individually and together, and to look ahead to Easter ’s message of hope and new beginnings What do you want this year to look like? “I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and ear th”. (Psalm 121:1-2) The phrase “Maker of heaven and ear th” highlights God’s sovereignty and power, assuring us that He is capable of providing help in all situations Bernadette, Churchwarden

The Need Project Update

This month we say farewell to Gordon who retires from the Need Project. We’d like to thank him of behalf of all of the Stotfold News readers for keeping us all so well informed over these last few years. We wish you a great retirement..

The las t word.. Well, what a month!

December is always so busy and along with moving to the chapel and Ellie star ting, it has been manic Without our amazing family of volunteers, none of this would be possible, as always, thank you all, you are priceless

As I write this, we are ready to star t the next chapter of our journey We are in the chapel and are ready to star t to operate from there from Januar y 5th It is ver y exciting, but also a bit sad, as we have had a great time using the shop on the high street for so long Now, it is stripped out, but we move on with Gods guidance and pray we keep close to his leading in all we do

A L F I E ’ S

I retire, from heading up the project at the end of Januar y and for me it is an emotional time, but I know it is time, and I am more than confident the project is in safe hands I have been leading the project for 23/24 years and have loved ever y bit of it. I have worked with some incredible people, who from the star t were so committed in their passion for those in need, (Mick, Joan, Doug, Ceri), along with so many more. You have blessed me and encouraged me ever y step of the way.

I remember, we were doing maybe 2 or 3 food parcels a week, working out of a cleaning cupboard in the Baptist church and now here we are today. It doesn’t seem possible, but our God had a plan and chose us. Just to put it in perspective, in the seventeen working days this month, we have given out about 820 Christmas food parcels, all referred through agencies we work with We also gave out about 400 bags of use -by food, which, if it hadn’t been taken, would have gone in landfill We have also given out over £25,000 wor th of toys, to children who were not getting presents, all by referral

We also suppor t several other charities, locally, on a weekly basis, with what ever we can regarding food We estimate a financial value for all that to be in total about £95,000 I am not about bigging the project up, I really wish we could have the stats we had say 10 years ago, averaging maybe 100 a month, which is still too many to the 691 we averaged in 2025 This is a sad reflection on the society we live in

Why is this happening, I’m sure we all have opinions, and I’m sure there are many, but for us, we will tr y not to judge, and we will follow Jesus’ teaching. For us, it is not about numbers and value, it’s about the fact we can and are doing something about it and your suppor t makes all this possible, so thank you! In closing, I thank you personally for the suppor t and pray Gods blessing on all of you.

I’ll finish with these words:

We can’t do ever y thing, but we can do something, let’s not let the things that we can’t do, stand in the way of the things we can. Praise God always, Gordon

Gordon officially retires from the project at the end of Januar y

Down Memory Lane

Following on from Rev Rober ts memories in our Januar y issue, we were delighted to hear from Robin, now living in Shefford but an avid reader of our magazine through his friend Rose. Robin lived in Stotfold since his bir th in 1935. He shares his memories of living in Stotfold and proudly tells us about his five brothers and the fascinating lives they all had.

My name is Robin Smith (I am the last sur viving of six children) We moved to 11 St Mar y’s Avenue Stotfold in 1935, the year I was born My mum loved children, she brought up six boys, alongside an evacuee from London and she also fostered two girls My dad ser ved both in the army and the R AF so she was alone for many of these years i have lovely memories of playing in the big garden in our home We often climbed the fence at the bottom of the garden when we were late for church or choir practice. We played cricket in the Avenue (not many cars in those days!) and played at the riverside. We went to the regent cinema (opposite Bal’s Garage on Arlesey road). We paid 1/3d to see the wurlit zer organ raise up and a film of course. all of us spent many summers at various times helping at the Stotfold flour mill.

As young children, apar t from Jack, all of us went to Stotfold Boys School - now the Roecroft Centre. I passed my 11-plus exam and received a scholarship to Bedford Modern School and met my wife Gill at the bus station in Bedford as she went to the nearby Girls School When I left school, I joined the Army and ser ved in the Suffolk Regiment for 3 5 years Towards the end of my ser vice, I was sent to Cyprus for 8 months during the Suez Crisis On my return I worked at K & L foundries in Letchwor th and went on to run by own business supplying potatoes to fish and chip shops and Wimpy bars in London

My brothers:

Ar thur Jack Smith (known as Jack) Born 17/8/1923 joined the R AF at age 18 and trained in Rhodesia. He ser ved with 70 Squadron flying wellington bombers. As a Pilot Sergeant he ser ved in Nor th Africa and Italy. Sadly he died on 9/12/1944 - aged 21. He was flying from Foggia, Italy on a night raid to attack the marshalling yards in the east of Bologna. on his return flight both engines cut out on the approach to the air field. Two sur vived the crash with serious injuries but jack died. He is buried in the Italian Sansco River war cemeter y.

Richard Norman Smith (known as Dick) Born 28/8/1926 and became head boy at Bedford Modern School, then graduating in 1948 from the Royal Vetinar y College, London Richard married Majorie Webster from Stotfold Michael Jesse Smith Born 16/9/1930 joined R AF Halton straight from school for two years and was keen to train as a Pilot, but as a diabetic he wasn’t allowed He was an engineer and worked at Schieldrops Engineering in Stotfold (now Manor Farm) and married Anne Shieldrop in1953

William John Smith born 12/7/1933 Joined the army at 18 and ser ved for 35 yrs He trained as a chef and became personal chef to the Nato Commander – General Murray He attained rank of Major and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel William married Hilda who he met in Germany

Lawrence Smith born 8/3/1939 he also passed his 11plus exam and also attended Bedford school He left school and spent a year at Fisons, Ipswich before studying agriculture at Wye College in Kent He moved to Oxford to study Agricultural Economics and with his wife Mavis, then moved to Glasgow to be a lecturer at the university. They spent 3 years at the university of Nairobi. He became a Professor and was a United Nations Advisor. He retired to Suffolk and was made a Canon by the Bishop of Suffolk for his ser vices to the diocese.

As you can imagine, my mother was ver y proud of her boysnot bad for 6 Stotfold lads aye!!!!!

Kindest Regards, Robin

Next month we look for ward to bringing you the second instalment form Rev Rober t Draycott as he recalls moving in to their home in Trinity Road Do you have memories that you would like to share? Please do get in touch if you do
