Mar tin told the Arlesey News Magazine “I've done several marathons over the years, the last one was actually 22 years ago in the Antarctic, and I vowed never to do another one!” “I read about the Flawed Hero Marathon however and thought I really must have a go at this, not least because it's suppor ting such a great cause ”
Mar tin’s family has been touched by cancer over the last few years and so raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK helped make his decision to run. “I've reached £1800 so far, but with the suppor t of friends, family, colleagues and the local community I hope to reach £3000” Mar tin told the Arlesey News
The race star ts at midnight on 26th April from the Broadway Cinema in Letchwor th and takes runners round 16 laps of central Letchwor th. This is the same day as the London Marathon, so the 50,000-odd runners will be setting off just after the Flawed Hero Marathon finishes
The Flawed Hero Marathon is organised by local running enthusiast Phil Rober tson "The Flawed Hero Marathon 2025 is the people’s marathon. Safe, suppor ted, inclusive, and about the individual stories,"
We have loved featuring a selection of our local marathon runners these last few months!
We’d would like to wish all local marathon runners the ver y best of luck with their upcoming races.
We can’t wait to hear how you get on!
The doors closed for gymnastics sessions at Pix Brook Academy on the 15th Februar y Having had just over three great years using the spor ts hall at the school the club is all set for their new move Over the last few years, the club has been able to build up their membership to over 270, extend their range of classes to Home Education, SEND and Adults as well as building a wonder ful community of over 50 parent and toddlers in their playgym classes ever y week
After a extremely stressful year of tr ying to find a suitable venue the club are delighted to have signed an agreement with Arlesey Town Football Club (ATFC) for use of their function room from Wednesday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. This is a wonder ful oppor tunity for Pix Gymnastics to open up to more members and to expand their classes into the day time.
During half term their equipment was transpor ted in their container and lifted into place next to the new venue
The coaching team, committee members and some of our wonder ful parents helped spruce up the hall and make a few adjustments to ensure they were ready for opening day
From September the club will have exclusive use of the football club function room 7 days a week
They are planning to offer a range of classes during the day, to include pre school, playgroups, home education and classes for older adults They will also be able to reduce their waiting list with additional classes being added to their already busy weekly schedule
If you would like to join the waiting list please email pixgymnastics@gmail.com or visit their website www.pixgymnastics.co.uk.

Firstly, we have to star t by mentioning your recent nomination for the Countr yside Alliance Awards this year! It all sounds ver y exciting! Can you tell us a little bit about it?
The Countr yside Alliance Awards, also known as the "Rural Oscars," celebrate and recognise rural businesses, communities, and individuals who make significant contributions to the countr yside These awards are prestigious to win and cover categories such as local food, butchers, pubs, rural enterprises, and village shops/post offices It is an honor to have been nominated by our wonder ful customers for the local food categor y!
For those readers that perhaps aren't as familiar with you guys at Lower Wilbur y Farm - can you remind us how long you have been at the helm and what brought you to this area in the first place?
Lower Wilbur y Farm is a Central Beds Council Farm which gives people like us a star ting point to run your own farm. I'm from a farming background, my parents and brother farm in Cambridgeshire and I knew from an early age that that is what I wanted do!
We took over the tenancy in 2015, and my business plan always included a farm shop to supply the local community with locally reared, grass fed meat
One thing that has cer tainly seen a huge change since you took over Katie has been the fantastically stocked farm shop that you currently have - what else can visitors look for ward to when they visit, especially now we are just seeing the beginnings of Spring?
At this time of year we are in full flow of lambing! It really is an amazing time watching new lives be born So when you visit the shop, you will see the pregnant ewes in the cour tyard and if you are lucky might even see one being born! There are also ewes and lambs turned out in the fields!
It's lovely to see the lambs racing about and chasing each other! There are also the resident pigs in the cour tyard, Flamingo and Squishy, they love saying hello to ever yone!
We love to learn m ore about our wond erful m agazine advertisers!
If you have a local business and would like to par ticipate in a future LOCAL LIFE feature then get in touch!
introduce you to anothe r of ou r Stotfold N ews Magazine advertisersing to Katie from Lowe r Wilbu ry Farm
Ever ybody knows that farming is a 24 hour job When you do manage to get time to yourselves, what do you enjoy doing and how do you manage to switch off I love pottering around in my garden with a glass of wine!! We also love going to shows throughout the summer months showing our sheep! It's great to catch up with all our friends and have a BBQ in the evening after we've shown!
If anyone is visiting the Farm shop for the ver y first time which items of your fresh produce would you recommend they tr y first to really experience the authentic Lower Wilbur y Farm experience?
It's hard to just choose one thing, but I think our rib eye steaks are amazing! Parred with some boiled new potatoes and green beans!
Thursday 6th March was World Book Day and we appreciated having a visit from a famous author Pippa Goodhar t, not only delivered a fantastic assembly to the whole school, but also visited individual classes to talk in more depth about her creative process, read from her books and take questions from the children
It was a wonder ful experience for the children who hopefully felt ver y inspired after wards. As well as our visit from Pippa the children spent the day embracing the joy of reading through a variety of fun and engaging activities.
Elm and Beech class turned potatoes into their favourite book characters!
This special day is all about inspiring a love for reading and encouraging children to explore the magic of books Don’t forget, reading at home is one of the most impor tant ways to suppor t your child’s learning and development
Thank you to our parents, for your continued suppor t
We look for ward to updating you after Easter on more of our news and activities
It doesn’t seem possible that we are now at the end of the spring term. Our Juniors are approaching their primar y assessments, our year 11 students are imminently taking their GCSE examinations and our year 13 students are on the verge of star ting their A Level exams. This marks the inaugural year of sixth form examinations at Etonbur y Academy.
Our Etonbur y Juniors immersed themselves in World Book Day I am so impressed with the incredible effor t that ever yone has put into the celebrations for this day Our Juniors looked superb dressed as their favourite book characters World Book Day is such a fantastic oppor tunity for students to immerse themselves in the magical world of books and reading It's hear t-warming to see young minds so enthusiastic about literature and stor y telling Whether it's diving into a classic tale or discovering a new favourite author, the world of books is waiting to be explored by each and ever y one of us Let's continue to cherish the wonder of stor y telling and celebrate the magic of books together!

As we approach the end of the new half term we are already more than half way through the academic year. The last couple of weeks have been really busy for all, but in par ticular our year 6 pupils who have completed a full round of mock SATs exams As you would expect pupils have responded magnificently All available staff were used to suppor t the pupils providing many rooms with a small
number of pupils in each. We are obviously working hard with this year group including Wellbeing lessons, revision strategies and brain food! We know this can be a ner ve -wracking time for young people and as such we have tried to make things as normal as possible
This last term has also included a large number of appointments that have been made in preparation for next years continued development of the curriculum and growth of the school It is par ticularly exciting to prepare for this growth and speak to colleagues excited about joining the school and developing their own curriculum areas It is always interesting to speak to other colleagues about their experience
and this also give us an oppor tunity to talk about the work happening at PBA. It is easy to forget that staff training happens regularly and teachers and other colleagues spend their time thinking about, discussing and planning the learning experience for our pupils March also saw us immerse ourselves in World book day for KS2 pupils, a visit to the Tate Modern for our GCSE ar t pupils, a visit of the vir tual planetarium for year 5 and year 8 pupils and the month finishes with a GCSE geography visit to Walton-on- the -Naze Overall, a busy time at school, but that’s always the case At least at this time of year we can begin to look for ward to the warmer weather! Have a great Easter from all at Pix Brook Academy.
Well, sad to say, we had another record-breaking month in Februar y With 737 food parcels, which were packed and delivered, throughout our area, in only 20 working days This amounts to approximately 2,500 bags of food, not counting the 300 odd bags from our top up points People are really finding things ver y tough and there seems to be no end to the situation We are getting closer to getting the keys to what will be, we hope our permanent home in Stotfold Then, we can develop the upper space, to allow for our vision for our community and for our future development as a charity It is exciting, but for me, it’s taking far too long, but, I know that my God’s timing is per fect, so we tr y and stay focused on that
One amazing thing happened last week I was approached, by a lovely couple, who came up to me in our church car park and said they wanted to help, as they had read previous repor ts. They were ver y keen to help and with that they gave us £25,000 pounds, which when gift aided means £30,000, towards the development. This totally secures the work on the lower level, which is the main purpose of the project, which lets us feed people.
In closing, I would like to say thank you all so so much for suppor ting the project. Without you, we are no good to anyone, just a noise, but together we can with Gods help achieve incredible things.
Phase 2 of the project seems miles away financially, but so did Phase 1 and we now have funds to cover all of Phase 1, which a year ago was not possible Phase 2 funding is just getting star ted, so watch this space If you wish to know more about how you can suppor t us, please call me on 07496 833940 In closing, thank you to all the amazing volunteers who work tirelessly for the project throughout Central Beds and now fur ther afield We look for ward to updatin you next month
Praise God always, Gordon

I’ve just returned from a week by the rugged coastline of Cornwall The sun did shine (mostly), the skies were blue, and so too were the waves of the sea It was breathtakingly beautiful, windy and bluster y but totally enlivening! I loved it! As I walked along the coastline with a friend admiring the stunning seascapes, I was reminded of the wisdom of the waves
As I’ve just lost a good friend, I’ve been reacquainted with the pain of grief As I watched those wild waves, I saw the similarity between these and the waves of grief. What I mean is that if we allow ourselves the time and space, the waves of emotion arise within us until they reach a crescendo, before crashing down and dissipating. And then the next wave comes; some are bigger than others and sometimes are calmer than others.
However, when we resist these rising waves of emotional grief, they fall
back within, without peaking in a way that allows them to naturally dissipate They effectively stay in the system where they await another chance to come through us
Unlike us, the sea doesn’t resist its natural rhy thm’s, it goes with the rise and fall as nature intended But us humans can find it unbearable to facilitate this Instead, we may fight it, thus prolonging the pain of the process It can be especially difficult to bear such emotional pain if our family didn’t know how to do this or to teach us. Finding the right counsellor and therapy can be significant in suppor ting us to
As counselling can be an excellent way to keep learning, grieving, healing and growing, I have just star ted some more myself!

If you are heading out food shopping at the moment you probably won’t be surprised to see the supermarket shelves stacked with wonder ful chocolate eggs It is a sure sign that Easter is on its way. As Lent draws to an end during April, Christians journey into Holy Week from Palm Sunday, remembering the joyous reception of Jesus into Jerusalem, and then recalling the last days of his ear thly life.
Maundy Thursday, offers a momentar y pause remembering Jesus’ sharing his last meal with the disciples, his special friends, as he commands them to love one another. A moment of poignancy and intimacy before the pain of the cross on Good Friday. There is solemnity and space to consider our own response to the life and death of Jesus before the joy of Easter morning And as Christ bursts from the tomb, we shout Alleluia, He is risen! The wonder of the resurrection, Jesus’ defeat over death and all because of God’s love for humanity A love that offers hope, light and renewal in the all the circumstances of life
Easter eggs, the hollowed-out chocolate shapes, are a reminder of that empty tomb, of new life breaking for th into the world The followers of Jesus found that empty tomb on that first Easter morning before they would go on to encounter their risen Saviour and their lives would be transformed for ever.
As you eat your chocolate eggs this year, or whatever you do during the holiday weekend, why not pause for a moment, and remember the empty tomb, a symbol of life, of hope and of love, all offered to you by Jesus.

Can any readers name the postman standing in the door way on the left hand side of the picture above, alongside the postman on the bike who is thought to be Sid Winters?
Do you know the two local bakers pictured above? We think one could be Les Albon (on the right) but who is the man on the left? Possibilities could be Mr Papwor th or Harold Goodwin It’s thought the baker y was known as ‘Papper ’s Bakers’
Thank you to reader Barr y Page for sending these in to us - can you help us put the names to the faces? We love to see your photos! Please get in touch if you have any to share.
Thank you Arlesey News reader Mrs Joyce for loaning us a selection of fascinating books and ar ticles, all with links to Arlesey from days gone by

Among activities going on in Arlesey that month was a talk by Mrs Charles at the Women’s Fellowship which was to be illustrated on an epidiascope After googling this we found it to be a projector type piece of equipmentwe popped a picture (top left) of the page for those that are as in the dark as we were!
The Vicar of Arlesey at this time was the Rev E. B. Edgell.
We love to see your old Arlesey memorabilia - unfor tunately it was not possible to bring you the promised ar ticle on Dr Argo this month due to an admin hitch, however we have this safely stored away for our May edition.

My sisters and I were born at 11 St John’s Road in Arlesey in the 1960s Our parents bought the house brand new in 1963, having returned to the UK from Canada after two years teaching in schools there They chose Arlesey as it was well placed for travelling to their teaching jobs in Biggleswade and Sandy At the time we lived in Arlesey the population was perhaps only 3000 or so, I remember that we could play safely in the road outside our home as no traffic was able to drive any fur ther along the road unless it was to simply turn around
Beyond the end of the road there were only fields, and from our front bedroom windows we could see over the fields to the railway line and over to the brickworks, which then had their chimneys. I remember that most of the trains that sped past were diesel hauled, but I do recall the occasional steam train passing too.
The presence of the railway lines was a big par t of our childhoods, as our father was not only a teacher, but also a railway author. Some of my earliest memories are from the regular Sunday morning walks that Father would take my sisters and I on while Mother prepared Sunday roast.
We would leave home in St John’s Road, and turn right onto Cricketers Road, before then taking another right onto High Street From here we would walk to the next junction on the right of High Street, and head towards the railway lines, crossing them on the bridge in Mill Lane The only thing that would alter this routine depended entirely on the shift pattern of one of the railway signalmen who worked in Three Counties Signal Box, which then stood next to the footbridge on the Mill Lane side of the tracks
Father was friends with one of the signalmen (possibly called Reg?), and if he was working on a Sunday morning, he would invite us all up into the signal box, where he and Father would enjoy a mug of tea each and we children would watch the trains fly by I remember how the signal box would shake rhy thmically as trains passed, and if they were really fast, how the signal box windows would rattle in their frames
One par ticular visit to the signal box with Father sticks in my mind because it wasn’t on a Sunday morning, or with my sisters. I can’t recall what the reason was, but I imagine that Father had been invited down to Three Counties Signal Box for a par ticular reason, as it was an early evening visit and we didn’t have tea before leaving home. Once along High Street we went into a chippy, where Father bought us and his signalman friend fish and chips, which I vividly
ox as the various
Our family moved from Arlesey in 1969 when Father was successful in getting a promotion to a bigger school in Devon, but the connection with Arlesey doesn’t end there Father kept in touch with his friend in the signal box and when British Rail decommissioned and then demolished the signal box in around 1976/77, he was able to put him in touch with the relevant railway manager, and Father was able to purchase one of the two name ‘Three Counties’ nameboards from the signal box
After Father passed away in 2017 I inherited the nameboard from the signal box, and so a little piece of Arlesey histor y sur vives safely in Devon
