Our ethos

Stonyhurst is a Jesuit, Catholic School with a tradition of excellence that seeks to develop the full human potential of our pupils to live lives of faith and justice as citizens of the world.

Our aims

Stonyhurst is the leading Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition with a restless ambition to inspire our pupils to become young men and women for others, growing in competence, conscience, compassion and commitment, who are drawn to live lives purposefully in the world for the greater glory of God and the Common Good. Our aim is to form ‘men and women for others’ by living out the virtues in the Jesuit Profile.

Pupils’ academic and other achievements are wide and varied, and highly accomplished. They have a highly developed sense of social awareness; are passionate about making a difference and are fully committed to helping others through service and voluntary work.

The parents we spoke to placed great emphasis on their children acquiring a broader view of the world, an awareness of the plight of others less fortunate.

Parents choose Stonyhurst for its offering of ‘tradition grounded in excellence’, strong values and ‘mission to prepare men and women for the world’.

Welcome

tonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is much more than a preparatory school – it is a family to which children know they belong. We have a story that is more than 430 years old, and we now sit at the cutting edge in prep school education with our traditions to support us.

Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall provides the first steps in each child’s education at Stonyhurst, characterised by a seamless education from age 3 to 18. We are a Roman Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition. This means that our guiding stars are the two great commandments to love God and our neighbour. These are experienced throughout our daily life in school, in our structures, amidst our relationships and in our priorities. As they grow, our children are not only nurtured but are encouraged to thrive in order to become “men and women for others”.

As you learn more about Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall it will become increasingly clear to you that the children are happy and that they know it is good to be at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. You will also see how they are encouraged to work hard and achieve their personal best, whether it is in the classroom, on the sports field, or through the myriad of other opportunities they have for their personal development and all-round growth.

One of our principal aims is for every child to feel that their contribution to school life is valued and worthwhile and that their special gifts are celebrated and their needs are recognised. Each child is supported and encouraged by the other boys and girls and by strong, talented, and very committed staff. Our motto ‘Quant Je Puis’ (as much as I can) is our overarching principle.

Here at Stonyhurst, we are privileged to live, work and play within glorious natural surroundings. Each child is encouraged to pursue their innate fascination with the world around us. Our youngest children benefit from the purpose-built Pre-Prep facility on campus for 3 to 7 year olds. As the children grow and progress in Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, they benefit from the extensive facilities and unique resources on site that are shared with the College.

It is not possible to share everything through the pages of a prospectus, nor will you be able to appreciate the vibrancy and warmth of our school community. If you would like to know more about our school and spend time amidst its people, then please do come and see us. You are assured of the warmest of welcomes.

Innovation is our Tradition

The purpose of a Stonyhurst 3-18 education has always been, in the words of St Ignatius, to “set the world on fire” - to equip young people with the courage, compassion and curiosity to live purposefully for the Greater Glory of God and the Common Good. This mission, first ignited by the English Jesuits in Saint Omer in 1593, continues to burn brightly today.

To remain true to this calling, a Stonyhurst education must anticipate the needs of a changing world. Over the past decade, we have invested more than £20M in creating a nurturing and inspiring environment, while introducing bold innovations: the International Baccalaureate, a return to 11+ entry, a bespoke Higher Line Centre, the Stonyhurst Foundation (2020) which has already raised over £18M for bursaries, and the founding of Stonyhurst International School Penang.

These milestones reflect a simple truth: innovation is our tradition. As the oldest continuously operating Jesuit school in the world, we embrace both the privilege and the responsibility of our position - sustaining our mission, deepening our culture of innovation, and shaping a global future for our pupils.

In a world of constant change, our Jesuit identity keeps us grounded, our tradition fuels our progress - and our ambition is to form the leaders of tomorrow.

Stonyhurst’s Four Pillars

A Roman Catholic and Jesuit School

Rooted in the Jesuit tradition, Stonyhurst forms young people of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment, grounded in faith and a deep sense of justice. Spiritual formation is woven into daily life through prayer, reflection, and service. Our partnership with Jesuit schools and missions around the globe strengthens the spiritual growth of our pupils, inspiring them to become men and women for others.

A School of Academic Excellence

We challenge every pupil to achieve their personal best, supported by outstanding teaching and tailored academic pathways. Drawing on centuries of heritage and the Ignatian commitment to cura personalis (care for the whole person), our curriculum blends intellectual rigour with innovation - spanning the arts, sciences, humanities and languages. Our inspiring educators, outstanding resources and bespoke enrichment opportunities set the stage for lifelong achievement.

A Vibrant Community and Full Boarding Programme

Stonyhurst is a family like no other: a joyful, inclusive community where young people are known, valued, and supported to flourish. Our full boarding programme offers a home-from-home experience, enriched by vibrant weekend activities, dedicated pastoral care, and global friendships.

Day pupils are fully immersed in the life of the community, with access to the same outstanding teaching, cocurricular opportunities, and pastoral support as boarders. Many choose to extend their day through our afterschool and evening programmes, enjoying supper and enrichment alongside their boarding peers. This unique integration fosters a strong sense of belonging, lifelong friendships, and a shared commitment to community. Whether boarding or day, every pupil benefits from the same holistic formation - where character, curiosity, and kindness grow.

A School for Global Citizens

At Stonyhurst, we prepare pupils to engage confidently with the world. Through intercultural experiences, international outreach, and a global network of Jesuit schools, we nurture empathy, leadership and a commitment to the common good. Pupils benefit from expert application guidance to universities across the world, global internships, and international service opportunities - equipping them to become agents of positive change in a complex world.

History

Stonyhurst is one of Britain’s leading Catholic boarding schools, with over 430 years of history. Founded in 1593, Stonyhurst is the oldest continuously operating Jesuit school in the world. Thanks to the development of teaching, boarding, sporting and recreational facilities, the school is strongly positioned to continue its long tradition of excellence.

The College was founded at St Omers in France in 1593 to educate the sons of English Catholic families, at a time when Catholic education in England was prohibited. Since its relocation to the North West of England in 1794, Stonyhurst has become the thriving co-educational establishment it is today. Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall has a long history of nurturing men and women of individuality, generosity and service with the school’s educational philosophy rooted in the tradition of Jesuit education. Catholic martyrs, war heroes, politicians, writers, scientists, and actors are numbered among the former pupils, a testimony to the capacity of a Jesuit education to foster individual gifts and talents.

We take particular pride in those former pupils who died for their Catholic faith, and in the seven former pupils awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery.

Location

Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall nestles amid some of Lancashire’s most beautiful hills and valleys in the Ribble Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the North West of England. In an inspiring and peaceful location, the other major landowner in the region is King Charles, through his Duchy of Lancaster. Royal biographer Sarah Bradford revealed in her book, Elizabeth, that Queen Elizabeth II herself would have retired to the Ribble Valley if she could.

At Stonyhurst children can enjoy being children where they grow into outstanding young adults while benefitting from the wellbeing, safety, and happiness that comes with life in the countryside. The school is based in a rural village in the Forest of Bowland called Hurst Green and is secured in a 1000-acre enclosed campus. Although Stonyhurst enjoys a countryside location, it is within close proximity to three international airports; Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, as well as Preston train station which runs services to London Euston, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Year Groups

Year groups at Stonyhurst are known as Playrooms. Our Jesuit founders believed it was of paramount importance to allow pupils of the same age to develop strong ties.

To support these ties, our founders provided each year group with a room in which they could socialise and, under the direction of their Playroom Master, create a theatrical play about an important spiritual or moral issue, literally a “play” room.

Our unique Playroom system provides an outstanding quality of pastoral care, where the pupils bond as a year group (Playroom) and remain together as they move from Playroom to Playroom each year. The strength of the friendships they create within their Playroom is palpable, as is their support for and understanding of one another.

As a group, they learn to respect one another’s differences, face challenges together and delight in one another’s success. They have the support to grow in personal and academic confidence, step beyond their comfort zone without fear, and contribute to the community both within and beyond Stonyhurst itself.

Pupils in the preparatory school, including children in the EYFS, demonstrate excellent social awareness and respect for their peers.

Cura Personalis

Cura personalis denotes care for all aspects of a person’s health and development as an individual, from the physical to the mental and the spiritual. It encompasses our responsibility towards others.

We believe in ‘cura personalis’ – care of the whole person. Three core elements shape all that we do here as we seek to achieve cura personalis – educational excellence, perspectives and horizons, and faith that does justice. Each individual will experience these differently, based on their interests, talents, choices and personality, but all will benefit from this approach.

Therefore, while academic performance is important, learning and personal growth extend far beyond the classroom at Stonyhurst, with an emphasis on forming the whole character. We continue to excel in something that we have successfully achieved for over 430 years – shaping individuals to be the best that they can be, wherever their strengths and talents may lie.

First Steps Extraordinary Beginnings

Children joining Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall from the age of 3 are welcomed into our purpose-built, award-winning Pre-Prep unit. Set in glorious woodland, it is an ideal location for indoor/outdoor play and learning using our exceptional facilities and outdoor classroom.

Children work in small classes under the care and guidance of highly skilled and experienced teachers. In addition to literacy, numeracy and ICT, they learn to express themselves creatively, study modern languages and enjoy PE and swimming. There is an extensive after-school activities programme which runs until 6pm with an evening meal. Our Pre-Prep unit is self-contained but has the added advantage of sharing and taking part in the facilities, activities and special events of the main school.

Children in the EYFS communicate clearly and with confidence.

F Academic Excellence

rom Pre-School to Upper Elements (Year 6), children develop and extend their individual skills in literacy and numeracy and gain great benefit from the rich and broad curriculum which includes science, history, geography, modern languages, information technology, drama, music, art and craft and thinking skills.

As the children mature, the opportunities increase. All pupils in Upper Prep (Year 4) learn a musical instrument, for example, and they begin to learn Latin alongside French in Elements (Years 5 and 6). We have science labs, a vibrant music department, a newly-refurbished art and design studio, a swimming pool, a Tennis Dome, a sports hall, a theatre and a dance studio. We also have a Learning Support department and a full-time English as an Additional Language teacher. The school has invested greatly in IT in recent years, with all pupils from Lower Elements (Year 5) having their own laptops and access to the very latest smart adaptive technology that drives rapid progress in individual learning, particularly in English, mathematics and science.

Children’s progress is tracked and monitored throughout their schooling using thoughtful standardised assessments and teacher knowledge. Pupils at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall consistently achieve academic results well above the national standard and beyond their own predicted grades.

On Saturdays there are no lessons, just optional Saturday sports fixtures and activities.

Pupils of all ages and abilities display excellent attitudes towards their learning.

The Stonyhurst Learner Profile

At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, we nurture not only academic excellence, but the lifelong learning habits that sustain it. We believe that teaching children how to learn is just as important as what they learn.

The Stonyhurst Learner Profile is a wholeschool initiative designed to equip pupils - from Early Years through to Sixth Form - with the habits and skills they need to thrive, both in the classroom and in life. Rooted in our Jesuit mission and informed by educational research, the profile centres on five simple yet powerful habits: Prepared, Inquisitive, Confident, Independent, and Reflective.

These attributes are embedded into every aspect of school life - whether in lessons, co-curricular activities or play - shaping not only how our pupils learn, but who they become. Pupils are gently encouraged to take pride in being ready

to learn, to ask questions, to try new things, to think for themselves, and to grow through reflection and feedback.

By embracing the Stonyhurst Learner Profile from the earliest stages of education, pupils at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall develop as thoughtful, curious, and resilient young people—ready to take on challenges, contribute to their communities, and live out our Ignatian values in all they do.

A Pastoral Excellence

t Stonyhurst, the wellbeing and care of our children are at the heart of everything we do. We look after our pupils as if they were our own and nurture them to ensure they reach their full potential academically, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. By nurturing each pupil we aim to ensure every individual within the school community leads a happy and fulfilled life.

Pastoral care at Stonyhurst is outstanding. From the moment a pupil joins the school, they are made aware of the wide network of support available to them. In house, the Head of Boarding, Deputy Head of Boarding, Matron and Assistant Houseparent are the boarders main contacts. Elsewhere, the Pastoral and Safeguarding Deputy Heads, the Director of Safeguarding, the School Psychologist, the School Counsellors and the Chaplaincy team play important roles in pupil welfare, as do onsite Nurses, school Doctors and the Health and Wellbeing Centre team. Designated Safeguarding Governors and staff are closely involved in making sure that our pupils are safe and happy.

The class teachers are central figures in a pupil’s life at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. They provide emotional support and guidance on a variety of topics as well as being a true source of inspiration.

Safeguarding

Stonyhurst is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare, both physical and emotional, of every pupil both inside and outside the school premises. We strive to provide a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment that promotes the social, physical and moral development of every child and endeavour to make sure that every pupil feels secure and well cared for.

Our Safeguarding team is committed to providing the best possible care and support for all pupils. Our curriculum is designed to create awareness in pupils of safeguarding issues and how to deal with them. Issues are covered in the PSHE and RSE programmes, our assembly programme and more generally throughout the curriculum.

Creativity

Drama, art and music are important curriculum subjects for all children. Our pupils have the chance to perform through drama, music, dance, debating and recitation.

The Centenaries Theatre at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is equipped with a professional lighting and sound system which enables us to present a wide range of drama and music performances. There are several high-performing productions each year and regular concerts. We are proud of our extensive and highly successful LAMDA programme and have nurtured pupils who have gone on to star in leading roles in the West End.

Ballet provision further enriches our performing arts offering. These sessions are held in two engaging formats: a Mixed Dance Class, covering ballet, tap and modern, as part of the Activities Programme; and Specialist Ballet Sessions, which follow the official Ballet Grades curriculum and include the opportunity to perform at the end of each term.

Tuition is available in singing, piano, all orchestral instruments, guitar and percussion. Many join the numerous ensembles, school orchestra and choir. Our art studio is the starting place for children to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of art, working with paint, clay, textiles and ceramics.

A programme of cultural visits enables pupils to experience drama, theatre and gallery exhibitions.

Pupils of all ages perform at a high level in school musicals, in concerts, and when singing at public events outside of school.

Sport

Sport, both team and individual, is an essential component in the daily lives of our pupils. All children take part and represent the school in the wide range of sport that we are able to offer using the fine facilities in our beautiful setting.

We have a long history of sporting success. Representative sport begins in Lower Prep (Year 3). Thereafter, pupils have the chance to compete in fixtures and tournaments locally and nationally in hockey, netball, rounders and cricket for girls and rugby, cricket and hockey for boys. Additionally, all pupils compete in cross-country, swimming and athletics. There are numerous other sports on offer including football, tennis, gymnastics and dance.

Pupils of all ages, show high levels of physical prowess.

We have extensive and beautiful grounds for rugby, cricket, rounders and athletics. We have a fully equipped sports hall for all areas of PE and we have tennis courts and netball courts outside. Our facilities also include a nine-hole golf course and golf simulator (available once children turn 11), a swimming pool, an all-weather pitch and a Grand Slam standard indoor tennis facility. Stonyhurst offers a bespoke and very successful Tennis Academy programme available to all children across the age range, ably led by our Director of Tennis. In addition to external competition there is a healthy interline (house) tournament in all team sports.

We run regular sports tours. Additionally, talented children are given opportunities to compete at county and national level and some go on to professional careers; we boast several international players in our alumni.

Pupils achieve highly in a range of sports participating at county and national level in, for example, rugby, hockey, netball, and tennis.

ISI INSPECTION 2023

Pupils recognise that by engaging in service to others they are putting their faith into action, in line with the school’s ethos.

Catholic Faith

Our faith and Jesuit spirituality are at the very heart of our school. At the centre of our educational mission is the Jesuit ideal of finding God in all things.

All children take an active part in our prayer life and attend our Liturgies which are a much valued part of our day, enjoyed by all faiths and denominations. Our young people develop the habit of reflection and grow in their personal relationship with God. Children wishing to make their first communion are prepared for the sacrament by the Chaplaincy team.

At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, children are helped to appreciate what they have, and learn to make the most of their talents. They are actively encouraged to do their best in everything and to celebrate the successes of others through a spirit of gratitude and generosity.

Each year the children and staff agree which charities to support, as we live out our Jesuit calling to be “men and women for others.”

Pupils’ extra-curricular achievements are wide and extensive, supported by a broad programme of activities designed to challenge and engage.

& Activities Enrichment

After school activities take place five times a week and the programme is extremely rich and extensive. Giving children opportunities outside the classroom can build confidence and self-esteem and helps to develop sociable and independent young people. The majority of our co-curricular activities are fully inclusive.

Activity options that children can choose from vary throughout the year but typically include chess, choir, film club, football, hockey, golf, gymnastics, dance, astronomy society, orchestra, speech and drama, art and design, tennis and winter cricket nets, to name but a few. There are also extra squad practises for team sports and time for academic support.

Every summer, our Prep and Elements playrooms enjoy a Residential Trip to enrich their learning. Typically, this will include visits nationally, museum visits, cycle training

programmes, drama workshops, wild workshops, science workshops, and beekeeping workshops.

At weekends the boarders enjoy a very full and active programme, details of which are published each term in advance. During the holidays, the Stonyhurst Experience team offers a range of high quality opportunities and activities for our pupils, making the most of the facilities on campus outside of term time.

The school fulfils its aim of providing an education which challenges pupils to be the best they can be.

Boarding

The wellbeing of our boarders is at the heart of our boarding provision. With a generous staff-to-pupil ratio – the best in the UK – we guarantee round-the-clock care and a full, active programme seven days a week. Our boarding community is an extraordinary family.

The majority of boarding staff live in-house, Houseparents live on the edge of the campus. Relations between staff and children are close, supportive and happy. Children learn to become confident and independent, in an atmosphere of empathy and tolerance. They are encouraged to express their views and feelings, including playing a key part in choosing the many evening and weekend activities on offer. Stonyhurst does not have compulsory exeat weekends.

One visit to the boarding gallery will confirm the happiness and security of our community.

A Seamless Education

As our pupils reach the end of Upper Elements (Year 6), they continue their Stonyhurst education by moving to the College. The community at the College builds on the Jesuit values begun at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, preparing men and women to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The modern and thriving co-education community takes pride in the exceptional care and support it can give to each individual pupil. Stonyhurst College has an outstanding academic record, with many of our pupils going on to top universities in the UK, Europe and around the world. All pupils, whatever their particular strengths, are helped to achieve their full academic potential. The

co-curricular offering at the College is extensive and varied, catering to a wide range of interests and abilities, supporting and challenging pupils to experience four central strands to the Stonyhurst co-curriculum (Adventure, Chaplaincy, Performing Arts and Sport).

Pupils’ extra-curricular achievements are wide and extensive, supported by a broad programme of activities designed to challenge and engage.
