Instrumental Tuition
The majority of children at St Olave’s enjoy learning at least one instrument during their time with us. The children have many opportunities to perform and share their skills during the year, both in school and at a variety of concert venues. Most of our pupils choose to take music examinations on their chosen instrument(s) and achieve excellent outcomes. We also have a very good success rate in the number of pupils being offered Music Scholarships for their secondary schools.
At St Olave’s we have a fantastic team of instrumental teachers that visit the school each week to give instrumental tuition and share their expertise. As well as teaching our pupils, our instrumental teachers also play professionally and can be seen performing in some of our concerts. Our instrumental teachers are supportive and inspire pupils who are both beginners and more advanced. Children will be taught performance skills as well as learning music theory.
We are continually adding to our instrumental team and currently offer the following instrumental lessons: Violin, Piano, Harp, Singing and Guitar.
Individual 30 minute instrumental lessons take place on the same day each week and timings are rotated. We aim to provide up to 30 lessons during the academic year as well as a wealth of performance opportunities. The costs of instrumental lessons are published on the School Fees sheet issued to parents and payments are made at the same time school fees are paid.
Parents are kept up to date via a contact book in which the instrumental teacher will detail what is to be reviewed from the lesson each week. Parents also receive a written report at the end of the year. Appointments can also be made to meet with your child’s instrumental teacher during our Parent’s Evenings.
To learn an instrument is an exciting opportunity and it is proven to have huge benefits to a child’s learning across the whole school curriculum. It also supports the development of many skills such as confidence, resilience and commitment.

3. Payment for Instrumental lessons should be made with school fees directly to the Bursar. In the non-payment, a reminder invoice will be issued with a further deadline (usually within one week) If still not received by specified date, instrumental/vocal tuition will be suspended Lessons will not re full payment has been received.
4. Parents / guardians must give notice in writing to the Headteacher if they wish to cease rec instrumental tuition by the dates given in the table below Parents / guardians giving notice after the be expected to pay the full amount for term's lessons.
Notice Dates:
To terminate lessons at the end of Autumn Term : First day of Autumn term
To terminate lessons at the end of Spring Term : First day of Spring term
To terminate lessons at the end of Summer Term : First day of Summer term
5 Pupils are expected to attend all timetabled Instrumental lessons and to check their scheduled le with their class teacher in advance. The school is entitled to charge for lessons scheduled, and are obligation to make up lessons missed by pupils This is also true in the case of scheduled lessons mis short-term illness. If a pupil is on a school trip or an instrumental tutor is absent the Head of Perfo where possible, will attempt to reschedule lessons at some point during the course of the acade although this is not guaranteed.
6. If a pupil is unable to attend their Instrumental/Vocal lessons because of a long-term illness or parents/guardians should contact the School Office directly in advance of the scheduled lesso

9 Parents can expect pupils to be prepared for examinations organised by the principal music colle the Associated Board or Trinity College, London. Payment for examination fees is required when arranged by the school
