From the Collection of Wilfrid Fleisher (1897–1976).

The Fleisher Collection was formed by Wilfrid Fleisher, whose father Ben Fleisher moved from his native United States to Japan where he in 1908 started the first English-language newspaper, soon to become the most influential English-language newspaper in the Far East.

Wilfrid grew up in Japan and worked as Editor-in-Chief on The Japan Advertiser. He became interested in Chinese and Japanese works of art early on and amassed a substantial collection during the 1920s and 1930s, predominantly ceramics and jades.

At the outbreak of the Second World War the Fleishers had to leave Japan and later on Wilfrid and his family settled down in Sweden. The collection has been handed on in the family and part of it is now being offered for sale.

2011. A Chinese 'Longquan' Celadon–Glazed 'Eight Trigrams' Tripod Censer.

Raised on three mask–and–paw feet, the shallow rounded sides carved with the 'Eight Trigrams', between bands of applied bosses encircling the incurved rim and base, covered with a sea–green glaze falling short of the center of the interior and the raised beveled disc on the base, both burnt orange in the firing, the centre with an unglazed impressed floral decoration. Period: Ming dynasty (1368–1644).

This unusual 20th century print was published by Sato Shotaro, who produced several prints after Hokusai drawings in 1921. Compare examples in the British Museum in London, acc. no 1922,0120,0.1, and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, acc. no JP3418.

2017. A Japanese Kodaiji–Style Lacquer Mimidarai Basin.

The mimidarai of typical rounded form rising from a flared foot, set with two horizontal handles to the side, painted with scrolling floral tendrils and peonies on a flat black ground. Period: Meiji (1868–1912). Diameter c. 37 cm.

Note: Mimidarai is a part of the set of utensils used for teeth blackening (ohaguro), a traditional beauty routine popular in Japan since Kofun period (300–538 AD) Amongst other luxury lacquer items they were traditionally included in the bridal trousseaus of wealthy daughters of aristocrats or nobles. It was common for young women to begin blackening their teeth after marriage. This manner also prevented tooth decay.

2021. Hashiguchi Goyo (1880–1921). 'Woman Applying Makeup' (Kesho no Onna, 化粧の女).

Signed Goyo ga, carved by Takano Shichinosuke, printed by Somekawa Kanzo, self–published April 1918 (Taisho 7). Japanese woodblock print, embellished with mica ground, metallic pigment and embossing, c. 55.4 x 39 cm.

A woman powders her bare shoulder while gazing into a hand mirror, her loose robe and elegant pose enhanced by the shimmering mica background, a hallmark of fine Japanese printmaking. Details such as the embossed gold on the mirror and ring, delicate blindprinting, and finely carved hairlines showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship of the print. Her ring, a Western accessory, subtly reflects the modernity of the era.

This is the most celebrated portrait personally published by Hashiguchi Goyo. Much of Goyo’s limited output was reportedly

destroyed in the 1923 earthquake, making surviving works exceptionally rare. Though inspired by eighteenth–century Japanese bijin–ga, his refined use of line, pattern, and volume also reveals a strong influence from European drawing and painting techniques. His female subjects were typically geishas or attendants from restaurants and tea houses, and hence professional beauties.

Widely regarded as a masterpiece of shin–hanga bijin–ga, this print is especially prized when bearing the original carver and printer seals, confirming it as a lifetime edition. Examples can be found in several international museum collections. Compare a print from the same edition in the British Museum in London, acc. no 1981,0410,0.4, and a print, seemingly from the same edition, in the Honolulu Museum of Art in Honolulu, acc. no 20716.

2022. Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950). 'Morning at Abuto' (Abuto no asa).

The present work by Hiroshi Yoshida portrays sailboats drifting in the early morning light, their reflections glimmering across the water as the rising sun bathes the sky in a gentle peach hue. In the distance, softly violet hills provide a delicate contrast to the muted gray sails. Rich in atmosphere, the composition is distinguished by its subtle color gradations and elegance.

2041. Kang Tongbi/Huaman Shizhu (1887–1969).

Note: Kang Tongbi, was the daughter of Kang Youwei, a Chinese reformer and political figure of the late Qing dynasty and early Republican era. Kang Tongbi agitated for feminist causes. She was deeply involved in the women's movement in Shanghai, advocating women's rights through meetings and speeches.

2043. Hu Zhengyan (c. 1584–1674). After. ’Shi Shu Zhai Jian Pu’ (Shizhuzhai Jian Pu, or Ten Bamboo Studio Catalogue of Letter Paper).

Four volumes, small folio, Chinese text, numerous woodblock prints (mostly coloured), paper wrappers, paper label to the upper cover and on each volume, published by Rong Bao Zhai, Beijing 1952. Housed together in a woven silk folding case, c. 31.5 x 22 cm.

Rong Bao Zhai (in Chinese 荣宝斋, in traditional Chinese 榮寶齋), meaning ’Studio of Glorious Treasures’, is a historic and renowned shop in Beijing, specializing in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. It is situated in the Liulichang cultural district, just outside the Hepingmen Gate. Originally established in the eleventh year of Kangxi (1672), the shop was first known as Song Zhu Zhai (Pine and Bamboo Studio, 松竹斋). It adopted the name Rong Bao Zhai in 1894.

Of round form, the deep rounded center decorated in different shades of blue with two figures in a landscape, surrounded by a border of leaves and formalized pomegranates, the cavetto with eight large panels alternating with narrow ones, four with a peasant holding a tool across his shoulders, alternating with panels containing stylized tulips and carnations, separated by narrow scroll filled bands, the back with panels containing bamboo stalks and floral and fruiting cartouches, the base glazed. 2050. A Chinese Kraak Dish.

Of circular form, decorated in shades of underglaze blue, the centre painted with a design of birds by a lake surrounded by lotus, all set within a quatrefoil cartouche, the wide rim decorated with eight wide panels, four containing a peach motif alternating with different auspicious objects such as scrolls and artemisia leaves, separated by eight narrow panels each containing a chime; the panel pattern stylistically repeated on the reverse with eight wide and eight narrow panels, the base glazed. The figure seated in dhyanasana on a double–lotus throne, the top of the throne with a Tibetan incription 'This statue is made for the deceased (woman) Logus' and a blessing together with the number 564, the hands in dharmachakra mudra, both hands and feet with incised dharmachakra wheels, a symbol for teaching, wearing a brocade–hemmed dhoti and a shawl draped over the left shoulder revealing a bare chest, the back of the clothes decorated with a square tag with an incised double vajra, the serene facial expression accentuated by red, white, and black pigments at the lips and eyes, pendulous ears at either side of the face, the hair twisted in tight curls covering the scalp and ushnisha, a bud–form ornament atop the ushnisha, traces of blue pigment in the hair, the throne sealed. Note: A luohan ('arhat' in Sanskrit) is a disciple of Buddha who has attained enlightenment and has achieved the status of the perfected being, but chooses to postpone his accession to Nirvana to remain in the world and aid all beings. The luohan achieves enlightenment through instruction rather than his own insight and meditation, and as a result, ranks below the bodhisattva. The term luohan, means 'worthy' or 'venerable' and refers to the Buddha's original disciples, and by extension, to any holy figure who upheld and defended the Buddhist dharma.

This type of vessel has been called ding by some scholars and dui by others. It is likely derived from the early type of ding, but became a serving rather than cooking vessel in the Warring States period.

2126. A Chinese Sancai–Glazed Pottery 'Duck–Head' Bottle. The pear–form body somewhat flattened and decorated in relief with a panel to the front and back enclosing a horse rider flying above a stormy sea, the tapering neck adorned on the sides with long downward leaves which extend toward the bulbous body, along with a pattern of raised dots, the rim of the bottle in the form of a duck head, glazed overall in a variety of sancai colours. Height c. 25 cm.

Provenance: From the private collection of Gunnar Silverberg (1923–2025). Silverberg was taught carpentry at his father’s shop in Malmö, and started working there at an early age. In the late 1940s, he opened his own furniture store on Baltzarsgatan. He later moved to a nearby location, opening Silverbergs furniture store, which became one of the leading furniture stores in the south of Sweden. Silverberg was also interested in Asian works of art, which he collected himself, but also sold in his store. Thence by descent to the present owner.

2168. A Small Chinese Copper–Red–Decorated Porcelain Bottle Vase.

The pear–form body supported on a short foot, rising to a slender neck and slightly flared rim, decorated to the exterior with three joyous Buddhist lions in underglaze–red with eyes detailed in underglaze–blue, the animals are divided by floral sprays and insects in iron–red and gilding, a pearl band around the neck and below the rim are alternating large and small pointed leaves, the recessed base glazed.

Period: Kangxi (1662–1722). Height c. 14.5 cm.

Provenance: The collection of Herbert Küttim (1901–1984). Küttim grew up in Estonia. During the Second World War, he and his family fled the country and settled in Sweden in 1944. An entrepreneur involved in many different ventures, Küttim discovered his passion for porcelain during a trip to London in the 1950s. Over the following decades, he returned to London numerous times, loading his blue Chevrolet with antique porcelain to bring back to Sweden. Some pieces remained in his personal collection, while others were sold.

2186. A Pair of Massive and Rare Chinese Relief–Decorated Famille Rose Porcelain 'Wu Shuang Pu' Vases. Of impressive size, the tall ovoid body rising from a recessed, unglazed base to a waisted neck and slightly flared rim, decorated to the exterior in high relief with four figures from the Wu Shuang Pu, each clad in a colourful and elaborate costume which is painted in bright famille rose enamels, dividing the figures are sections of calligraphy around the body, and around the shoulder are four raised cartouches which enclose further calligraphy, four beribboned emblems adorn the neck above horizontal lines of calligraphy, a border of upward lotus lappets encircling the foot, hardwood stands. Period: late Qing dynasty (1644–1912). Height c. 77.5 & 78 cm.

Provenance: Acquired from Elis Eklöw (1894–1984), as evidenced by his characteristic sticker near the rim of each vase. Elis Eklöw worked for his family’s trading company August Eklöw in Stockholm, founded by his father August Eklöw (1837–1912). The company became focused on import from Asia after Elis Eklöw’s first trip to China and Japan in 1922.

The ’Wu Shuang Pu’ (Album of Unique Characters/Table of Peerless Heroes) figures are based on woodblock prints of forty folk heroes and heroines from the Han to Song dynasties. The prints were published in the late 17th century by Jin Guilang. The present pair of impressive vases depict the Wu Shuang Pu in high relief, which is exceedingly rare. The tremendous size and high quality of these vases certainly add to their striking appearance.

2216. A Set of Four Chinese ’Grill Family’ Armorial Famille Rose Porcelain Plates.

Of circular form with foliate rim after a European silver model, decorated in famille rose enamels with scattered sprays of flowers, the top cavetto with a shield enclosing a crane with a cricket in its beak, which is the coat of arms of the Swedish Grill noble family, around the shield decorative acanthus and tassles, as well as a helmet atop where another crane stands with a cricket in its beak, a gilt band around the rim, the reverse glazed. Period: Qianlong (1736–1795) Diameter c. 25 cm.

Provenance: (Probably) Jean Abraham Grill (1736–1792).

Note: This service was probably ordered in the 1760s by Jean Abraham Grill, who was stationed in Canton for a number of years in the 1760s as supercargo. Later on, he became one of the directors of the Swedish East India Company.

Of circular form, decorated in famille rose enamels with gilt highlights, the centre with the arms of Grill surrounded by large foliate scrolls and surmounted by a crane crest, the rim with large rocaille shell cartouches and vine, reverse glazed. Period: Qianlong (1736–1795), c. 1745. Diameter c. 26 cm.
