AN INTERVIEW WITH MAREIKE HÖRATH
Some people shape a place not through their title, but through the way they connect with others. Mareike originally comes from Coburg and has been part of the Übergossene Alm for eight years — and you can truly feel that. In her roles as guest relations manager and HR manager, she is closely connected not only with our guests but also with the entire team. Previously, she worked as spa manager; today, she combines that experience with a fine sense for meaningful encounters, atmosphere, and the feeling of truly arriving. In this interview, she gives us insights into her “life on the Alm.”
Mareike, what brought you to the Übergossene Alm Resort — and what has kept you here to this day?
What first drew me here was the region around the Hochkönig. The nature here is truly something special — and so are the people. Over time, not only the resort itself but also the team and the owner family have grown very close to my heart. This culture of appreciation and mutual respect remains one of the most important reasons why I am still here.
How do you notice in everyday life that guests truly feel at home here?
Many of them return again and again. You can feel the joy when familiar faces meet once more. Quite a few even speak of a second home — and that really says it all.
You are often the first point of contact in the house. In your experience, what do guests need most to be able to let go?
Above all, peace and space. The unique location of our resort plays a major role in this. Guests have time here — for themselves, but also for shared moments with family or friends. Without deadline pressure, without stress.
Is there a moment that symbolises arrival for you?
When the mobile phone stays in the room. When couples sit at the table, take time for each other and simply enjoy. Then you know: our guests have now arrived on holiday.
Why is the combination of being active and relaxing so important to you?
Being active clears your head. Afterwards, it is easier to relax — and you return to everyday life with renewed vigour.
You like to be out and about. Which hike around the Übergossene Alm do you particularly recommend?
I highly recommend the panoramic hike from the Arthurhaus back to the Übergossene Alm. It shows the region in all its facets: magnificent views, animals and the waterfall — for me one of the most beautiful tours here.
And for bike enthusiasts?
The Primbach tour from Maria Alm is a highlight for experienced bikers. The way up is sporty, the descent leads along a great, sometimes challenging trail — a real experience in terms of both landscape and riding technique.
What should guests take home with them from here — beyond fond memories?

Pleasure with roots.
Cooking didn't start with fancy ideas, but with what was available. With what grew. What was ripe and could be processed. Seasonal ingredients became food. Experience became knowledge. And that's precisely where enjoyment begins.
Products that could be used in a variety of ways were particularly interesting. The plum is a good example of this: formed into dumplings, boiled down as a stew, preserved for later. One product, many forms. Not out of gimmickry, but out of a keen sense of value and change. And some dishes are "well-loved" because they have matured over generations.
That's why our plum dumplings also include something new. Something light. Fresh. Reimagined.
Buttermilk builds a bridge to the legend of the "Übergossene Alm", a story in which milk once flowed incessantly. Our buttermilk ice cream takes tradition and interprets it in a contemporary way. Not as a counterpart to dumplings, but as a summery addition.
In this way, origins remain tangible and continue to develop at the same time.

A SUMMER RECIPE FROM THE ÜBERGOSSENE ALM FOR YOU TO ENJOY AT HOME
This recipe brings the freshness of the mountain pastures into your own kitchen. Straightforward, light and easy to prepare as a little reminder of summer days in the great outdoors.
INGREDIENTS (FOR APPROX. 6 PORTIONS)
500 ml buttermilk
200 ml whipped cream
120g sugar
1 organic lemon (zest + 1 – 2 tbsp juice) 1 sachet of vanilla sugar or ½ vanilla pod
TO SERVE AS DESIRED
Stewed plums
Fresh berries
A spoonful of honey
PREPARATION
1. Whip the cream until stiff and chill.
2. Mix the buttermilk, sugar, vanilla sugar and lemon zest well until the sugar has completely dissolved.
3. Carefully stir in the lemon juice and season to taste.
4. Gently fold in the whipped cream.
5. Pour the mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe mould.
6. Freeze for 4 — 5 hours. Stir every 30 — 40 minutes for the first 2 — 3 hours to keep the ice cream creamy.
Alternatively, the ice cream can also be prepared in an ice cream maker.
Savour the taste of the mountain pasture.
