MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Those who study at St Mellitus College may serve in a range of contexts; from different backgrounds, cultures and traditions, but all are committed to love and serve Christ. This is a place of prayer and worship where you will develop friendships and networks which will sustain and resource you.

St Mellitus College is a place of hope, energy, and commitment to the gospel. We have pioneered creative approaches to training that enable Christians to explore their faith deeply whilst remaining rooted in the Church. My days as a student at St Mellitus College challenged and strengthened my faith, with the space to broaden my intellectual horizons. I was able to read widely, to interact with a stimulating and diverse group of staff and students, and to ground my learning in the context of mission and community.

Our model of training combines theology with practice, enabling students to apply their learning directly to their workplaces, churches and communities. We will equip you to grow in your relationship with God, deepen your understanding of faith, and develop your ability to communicate that faith to others. We train people who are passionate about the gospel, called to serve Jesus Christ, and are energised by the life of the Spirit and the unity of the church.

We welcome an increasingly diverse group of students who desire to listen to the Spirit and deepen their understanding of God, His word and His world. We focus on leadership development, spiritual formation and the shaping of Christian character.

St Mellitus College, Chelmsford offers part-time ordination and Licensed Lay Ministry training, as well as part-time undergraduate programmes.

St Mellitus College has four centres around the UK: in Chelmsford, East Midlands (Nottingham), London, and South West (Plymouth). We offer a variety of programmes to allow students from diverse backgrounds to learn together and study theology.

WHY STUDY THEOLOGY? JANE WILLIAMS - M C DONALD PROFESSOR IN CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY

Why study theology? In order to love God more deeply and share God’s love with others.

ll Christians are theologians – we speak to God and expect God to speak to us.

A faith that cannot be examined cannot be trusted and cannot be shared, whereas a faith that is explored prayerfully and in good company gets richer and richer.

But if we are to share our faith in Jesus with those who do not yet know him, we need to be confident in our belief and deeply-rooted in our life of prayer and our understanding of the Bible. We study theology in order to equip ourselves to live our lives with God and share our faith.

As we study theology, we find ourselves resourced and challenged by the faith, understanding and prayer of those who have gone before us. But we live in a culture that increasingly does not know God, does not know that human beings are loved and called to live transformed lives, in the likeness of Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Studying theology is a bold enterprise – after all, we are exploring the nature of the living God.

This is a message of such good news that we must equip ourselves to share it. We have the privilege of living in the Spirit because others have shared their faith with us.

So theology should be studied with expectation and with awe. Since it is God we are talking about, it is not surprising that the more we study, the bigger and more exciting God gets.

Now it is our turn. God’s Church and God’s world need theologians on fire with the knowledge and love of God, and skilled at helping people to see God at work in our world.

Some people have been afraid that if they study theology their faith will be undermined, but the opposite is the case.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I am Kitty Lyons, 24 years old and in my third year of the Theology and Youth Ministry Course. I work at a local Evangelical church in North-East London and have done so for the past two and a half years.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN SUPPORTED DURING YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE?

WHAT DREW YOU TO STUDY AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I was drawn to St Mellitus College because of its openness to unite church leaders across the denominations to learn together.

I’ve also been really supported by my formation group tutor when holding faith in the theological environment has proven difficult.

I really appreciate the empowerment given to learners about their faith through being constantly challenged in conversations that lead to great debates!

WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR STUDIES? A highlight of my studies has been getting into the messy conversations with my formation group. We are a class of nine and the college has done a great job to prompt us into healthy relationships with each other. At this point we feel like a family and have great respect for each other's theologies whilst having the confidence to challenge those thoughts, knowing that our relationships will not be hampered beyond those times.

The retreats have been a great support to my time at St Mellitus College. They are a space for honest reflection on our lives academically and spiritually and have shown to be fruitful in teaching myself how to sabbath rest.

I was drawn to St Mellitus College because of its openness to unite church leaders across the denominations to learn together.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I would describe my time at St Mellitus College as greatly empowering! The college has given me the tools to be confident in using my voice, and in critically analysing books, sermons and ways of ministry. I have taken my faith as my own through formation at St Mellitus College and feel prepared to graduate with the knowledge that it is okay not to know!

Beginning Theology is an access course designed to provide a foundation for further study. Therefore we welcome: • Those without sufficient qualifications to access Higher Education • Those for whom English is a second language • Those from a minority or underprivileged socio-economic background who have not had the opportunity to study before • Those who have been referred by their vocations adviser or DDO to undertake some theological study as part of the Church of England’s discernment process

The Certificate lays the building blocks of Christian theology by introducing foundational subjects such as Theology, Church History, Biblical Studies, Spirituality & Discipleship, and Christian Worship. It engages students in learning how to reflect theologically on practical aspects of ministry.

When you have completed all six modules, you will receive a certificate of completion from St Mellitus College.

It is recommended that a minimum of one-two additional day(s) per week is undertaken for private study.

Alternatively, you can attend the programme and not submit assignments, in which case you will receive a certificate of attendance.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

I was an older student who had not studied for over 30 years. I should not have worried, I met a wide-ranging group of lovely people of different ages, ethnicity, backgrounds and church traditions. Above all we were all there to learn. I found the course inspirational and informative.

It can be undertaken full-time or part-time. The full-time programme is completed in one year, including one teaching day per week, plus two teaching weeks per academic year. Part-time study is completed over two years, including one teaching day per week plus one teaching week per academic year.

Undergraduates will normally have one A Level (grade C / grade 4 or above) or equivalent for direct entry on to the Certificate.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME

The Youth Ministry Degree aims to combine an excellent grounding in Christian theology alongside reflection on the latest ideas, issues and challenges in youth ministry thinking and practice. The programme is run by dedicated Youth Ministry tutors and gives students the chance to learn alongside those training for other forms of Christian ministry. It will prepare students spiritually, practically and theologically for the challenges of ministry among young people today. The programme has a strong academic component, aiming to give people a broad grounding in theology, as well as focusing on practical aspects of Christian ministry amongst young people today. Students divide their time between academic study and practical youth work in a local placement context. The degree is undertaken through full-time study in three years, including one study day per week plus two teaching weeks per academic year. It is recommended that a minimum one-two day(s) per week is undertaken for private study, alongside a placement of three days per week at a church, school or community-based placement.

The Youth Ministry degree gave me practical, emotional and theological skills in terms of working in ministry. I was able to connect deeply and authentically with those on my course and network with others.

VALIDATED BY DURHAM UNIVERSITY

When it comes to theology, the deepest rewards come from serious engagement with the Bible and key Christian figures and texts. The MA TMM is ideal for Theology or Religious Studies graduates looking to advance in higher research, Anglican ordinands, or practising church leaders seeking deeper engagement with core Christian texts and themes. Students choose one of two foci, each of which comes with a suite of related modules. Option 1 focuses on Systematic Theology and Christian Doctrine. Option 2 focuses on Biblical Studies, both Old and New Testaments. Students will write a dissertation according to their selected focus.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Submission of a degree-level academic paper no less than 2,000 words as part of the application process. A 2.1 degree is normally required for direct entry to any MA. The BA should be in Theology or an equivalent subject (such as Religious Studies) and have contained substantial study of Theology up to Level 6. Applicants with a Graduate Diploma in Theology or an equivalent subject will be considered, with an interview giving opportunity for a candidate to show adequate preparation and grounding for study at MA level.

I love the way the course enabled people from varied contexts of leadership to come together, to learn from each other and be sent out into our respective fields better- equipped in our leadership to empower others in their own vocations and leadership.

The sense of Christian fellowship, worship and study coupled with being able to make that transition more firmly into the leadership of my church have been invaluable. I had forgotten how much I love learning.

Every student has a support structure within the College dedicated to them. The College also hosts events to build community amongst the entire student body, including offering retreats for all students, as well as social events during Residential and Teaching Weeks, so that students can build friendships and connect with one another.

Online Resource Once students are enrolled, they are granted access to our online learning platform, Moodle. This is a great tool, catered to each student’s bespoke needs, with module guides, student handbooks, assignment schedules, reading lists – everything they might need to excel as a student at St Mellitus College, as well as an extensive and growing suite of online library resources.

Academic Development We know that many students who begin their studies with us are somewhat daunted about academic study. For some, it is their first venture into Higher Education. For others, it has been many years since they engaged in formal study. St Mellitus College is fully committed to supporting students through their academic work, and while the primary point of contact is their Formation Group Tutor, who will offer encouragement, advice and support with their studies and assignments, the college also offers an optional academic development course, as well as having a dedicated Academic Development Tutor available to provide one-to-one support.

SpLD Support SpLDs (Specific Learning Difficulties), including dyslexia and dyspraxia, are learning difficulties which affect approximately 10% of the general population. St Mellitus College is committed to enabling students with these learning difficulties to access its programmes without being disadvantaged and therefore makes reasonable adjustments to programmes in order to enable such students to participate without disadvantage. Tailored packages of support are also available according to the needs of the individual students. S T U D E N T S T O RY: ERIN PICKERSGILL Erin is a second year ordinand, studying the MA TMM in the East Midlands. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TRAIN FOR ORDINATION AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I had friends who studied at St Mellitus College and gave it such high praise. As a person who has had a range of church experiences in my life, and wouldn’t know whether to call myself an evangelical, a charismatic, a liturgical person, a contemplative or a mystic, I feel at home in St Mellitus College's generous orthodoxy which is both taught and practiced with the utmost integrity. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ST MELLITUS COLLEGE, EAST MIDLANDS? When I got through my BAP, I felt like I should defer my training a year. Some of that feeling made sense – my youngest had one more year of preschool, and I wanted to hang out with her a little more. But I also had a feeling of not wanting to rush this whole process. I found out later that St Mellitus College, East Midlands, which is a short commute away from me, would be starting the year I would start, because I had deferred. I loved the idea of not commuting all the way to London, and to have training based more locally. That felt important to me. In my life I have often been drawn to the beginnings of things, and so wanted to throw myself into the new community of St Mellitus College East Midlands if they’d have me!

WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR STUDIES? One highlight of my studies is to be studying alongside such a remarkable formation group. The community there has been vulnerable and strong since the beginning, which I can only really accredit to the work of the Holy Spirit and the leadership who modelled this kind of leadership.

I feel at home in St Mellitus College’s generous orthodoxy which is both taught and practiced with the utmost integrity.

The second highlight of studying has been the way I’ve felt encouraged to link study with devotional life. I have loved watching them intersect, inspire the other, play, and ask questions of each other. I have grown in that space between them. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I would describe my time at St Mellitus a little like being given the keys to a new way of living - being given permission, time and space, to explore theology and prayer, and my own personal formation into the likeness of Christ, in a way that I have never been able to before. Yes, the study can be intense and challenging, and so can ministry life but there is a real sense that what God does during this time is very unique and I see it as a gift.

O R D I N AT I O N T R A I N I N G All ordinands from across the country gather together for College residentials, which provide a rich context for worship, formation, spiritual growth, and friendships across the breadth of the Church of England.

St Mellitus College specialises in training women and men for ordination in the Church of England. Full-time and part-time programmes are available, combining academic excellence and practical experience, with a strong focus on the personal formation of each candidate for ordained ministry. The College has a first-rate academic teaching staff, alongside a wide range of visiting professors and associate lecturers. We draw on a pool of experienced church practitioners, who help develop each ordinand’s capacity for effective church leadership.

Students engage in academic study, leadership development and reflection throughout the term, in addition to one or two days per week for personal study, five residential weekends and one retreat weekend through the year, and one annual residential week. Each ordinand is part of a Formation Group, consisting of a small group of ordinands who journey together through training, with their Tutor acting as the primary point of contact for academic and pastoral support and formation. We also have an excellent chaplaincy team in college, and a counsellor, who along with the staff team are dedicated to prayerfully and professionally supporting our students.

St Mellitus College has a reputation for teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, having recently received a TEF Gold award for providing outstanding provision and ensuring students are significantly challenged to achieve their full potential.

To train for ordination, any prospective student must have a recommendation for training from a Church of England Bishop.

All our ordinands are rooted in local churches or mission contexts whilst undertaking their theological study. On the full-time route, ordinands spend half their week in a church context, ministering under the supervision of a training supervisor, whilst our part-time ordinands learn to integrate their theological studies into their working life or local church context.

F O R M AT I O N At St Mellitus College you will be stretched by the theology you study and have the opportunity to reflect on the sort of person that you are becoming, the qualities of your character, and the way you engage in relationships with others as a disciple of Christ. We call this formation. At its most fundamental level, ‘formation’ is the shaping of the whole person after the likeness of Christ.

The experience is an exciting time of discovery. Formation can be challenging and painful, as we encounter aspects of ourselves which are unexpected or surprising.

To facilitate this, we focus on aspects of development that include personality, character, relationships, leadership, collaboration and community. All students study theology alongside being engaged in some form of Christian mission and ministry, either in the workplace or in the context of the church and world. This model of training, with theology and practice intertwined, facilitates the formation of strong theological reflectors and reflective practitioners.

Formation groups are offered to ordinand, Licensed Lay Ministry, youth ministry, undergraduate and post-graduate students and play a vital role in the life of the college. They provide a regular opportunity for prayer, mutual support, reflection and discussion. A Formation Group Tutor acts as the student’s primary point of academic and pastoral support during their time in the College.

This is often the most important part of the formational journey, and the more honest we are, and able to engage with the demands of the process, the more profound the possibility of growth and change.

Christian formation is ultimately dependent on the transforming work of the Spirit.

As it involves the whole of our beings, the process of formation in the Spirit can be exhilarating, stretching and liberating as we grow in self-understanding and become more aware of the impact we have on others.

In my time at St Mellitus College, my Formation Group has been a source of mutual strength and support. I’ve made friendships that will last and learned so much from my fellow students. 26

ALMUNI STORY: PATRICK GILBERT Patrick is a curate HTB, after studying curate,at after studying at St Mellitus College, South West. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I grew up in Cornwall and have always loved living near the sea. Most of my life I’ve been a musician and through the gift of music have been able to travel extensively. I studied Jazz in New York City where I met my wife, and over the years have had the opportunity of living in the USA, India, and the Irish Republic where I’ve performed and taught music. I’ve also been a worship leader for a number of different churches internationally. We returned to Cornwall a few years ago where we currently live with our three children. HOW WERE YOU SUPPORTED DURING YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I found the spiritual retreats very helpful. Finding those quiet spaces in training can be really challenging so having outlets like this built into the course has been vital for my own spiritual sustenance, ultimately drawing me closer to God. I was also involved in the BAME focus group, it was so encouraging to see the college responding to issues around institutional racism and wanting to bring active change within the life of the college. I have made some really good friends from the college that have walked with me during training for ordination and that has been a great support in itself.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I really appreciated the residential weekends where I studied with ordinands from around the country and other parts of the world. It was so interesting listening to their stories and learning about their spiritual journeys; I think that was an invaluable experience.

It has helped me better understand my faith and develop healthy spiritual patterns in my life as a believer, this has contributed to me growing in confidence as a leader and serving my community well. It has also inspired me to be more pioneering in my ministry and motivated me to be a life-long learner. WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE PEOPLE LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO TRAIN? It depends on an individual’s background and life experience, but for me, St Mellitus College seemed to have a really good cross section of people from different walks of life which made the learning environment that much fuller and richer.
