Dear Members of the St. Mary’s Dominican High School Community, Please join me in congratulationg the Class of 2019! May each member of the class celebrate her accomplishments and gratefully remember all who accompanied her throughout her Dominican Catholic formation and academic preparation. We are particularly proud of the ways that graduates have embraced Catholic values, and we pray that responding to God's call will be the primary focus of their lives. Growing in the attributes stated in the "Profile of a Dominican Graduate" continues beyond graduation and blessings will be many. As you enjoy this edition of The Torch, please say a prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving for all the school community's blessings. We congratulate all our Dominican students for participation in the opportunities that are available at St. Mary's Dominican High School. Students and opportunities are blessings! May our students continue responding with generous hearts, faithful prayer, diligent study, and joyfilled enthusiam as they discover the richness of God's presence in their lives. During the month of August, we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order, the Order of Preachers. We ask God to continue blessing all Dominicans who preach the Word of God. We particularly ask God to bless our Dominican Sisters of Peace as they celebrate their foundation anniversary this year. The Holy Spirit continues working through our Sisters and the ministries that they sponsor, and we are gratedul for our Dominican Sisters and for all the ways that they welcome collaboration in preaching the Gospel. Please take a moment to pray the 13th Century Dominican Blessing for all members of the Dominican Order and for the St. Mary's Dominican High School Community.

MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary’s Dominican High School, sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Peace, is a Catholic college-preparatory program for young women rooted in the tradition of prayer, study, community, and service. With Jesus at the center, the Dominican community preaches the Word, radiates joy, advocates peace, promotes justice, seeks Truth, manifests Catholic values, and ministers to others.

The Valedictory Award, presented to the honor graduates who achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in their program of studies, was merited by seniors Anne Elisabeth D'Armond and Camille Reed Scandurro.

Anne will attend Louisiana State University. A Dominican Scholarship student, she held membership in the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Latin Honor Society. Camille will attend University of Notre Dame. The Salutatory Award, presented to the honor graduate who achieved the second highest cumulative grade point average in her program of studies, was merited by senior Rose Alexis Doskey. She will attend The University of Alabama. A National Merit Scholarship Corporation Finalist, she was a member of the Latin Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Six graduates were selected by leadership, administration, and faculty to receive the Veritas Award, the most prestigious Dominican award, in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in Dominican’s four pillars of prayer, study, community, and service. Award recipients were Haley Amber Williams, Chloë Raven Whitcomb, Anaise Miliama Thomas, Elise Therese Cresson, Emilee Kathryn Chubb, and Margaret Elizabeth Adams, with Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas, President.

Catherine Elizabeth Elvir was presented the Sister Mary Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Alumnae Award by Mrs. Colleen Markey Story ’79, President of the Alumnae Association. The honoree was selected by her classmates as most representative of Dominican spirit and ideals. Dominican’s motto, “To Praise, to Bless, to Preach” is an integral part of the honoree's life, as is her commitment to truth, Veritas.
Olivia Lynne Singleton was presented the Distinguished Achievement Award by Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas. The recipient was selected by administration, faculty, staff, and fellow students for reflecting the qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.

even seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as National Merit Finalists: Colette Carriere, Julia Cazabon, Elise Cresson, Rose Doskey, Margaret Latham, Camille Scandurro, and Chloë Whitcomb. The seven finalists were among the 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. As Finalists, these academically talented high school seniors had an opportunity for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that were offered in the spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Julia Cazabon was also recognized as a 2018-2019 National Hispanic Scholar. Each year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) honors more than 7,000 academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT™. To be eligible, students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino (based on the program’s definition) and achieve a minimum PSAT/NMSQT score for their region. Students with a cumulative junior year grade point average of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars. NHRP is administered directly by College Board and Scholarship America.

n September 2018, thirty-five seniors and Class of 2018 alumnae of St. Mary’s Dominican High School earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. AP tests are scored on a scale of 1-5. The AP Scholar designation recognizes students who earned scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Honor designation recognizes students who earned an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction designation recognizes students who earned an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scored 3 or higher on five or more AP exams. Six alumnae of the Class of 2018 earned the designation of National AP Scholar. This designation is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

ST. MARY’S DOMINICAN COLLEGE CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP Saheba Cuccia received the St. Mary’s Dominican College Corporation Scholarship, presented by Sr. M. Dominic Savio Estorge, O.P. The annual scholarship is given in memory of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary who established, maintained, and supported both St. Mary’s Dominican College and St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Graduating seniors who have been accepted and are attending a Catholic college or university have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship.

Academic Honors NCTE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS IN WRITING St. Mary's Dominican student Sara Miller received the 2019 Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships.
This year, schools nominated 416 students. Of that number, 210 received Certificates of Superior Writing. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two independent judges scored each submission on the expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. Miller is a student of English teacher Casey Lefante. St. Mary’s Dominican High School senior Ella Cheramie presented Dominican President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas the $18,000 she received for Dominican as winner of The Patrick F. Taylor Foundation 18 in ’18 city-wide high school arts competition that showcased the creative talents of students and their special connection to the culture of New Orleans that is celebrating its Tricentennial. Also pictured are Dominican Principal Carolyn Favre, Senior Vivian Palmer who submitted an essay for the competition and one of the 18 finalists, English teacher Charlene Ford and English Department Chair Meg Womble. The $18,000 award was designated toward English Department curriculum development. As first place honoree, Cheramie also was awarded $1,800. She said her submitted poem, Click-Clack, was penned, “on the idea that music and life are intertwined; one cannot flourish without the other. With my musical outlook, I see New Orleans as a score that ties its diversity together.” Palmer, whose entry was an essay, said, “From its beginning, New Orleans has been immersed in a rich culture of artistic passion, and for 300 years, performance arts like dance and music have kept the city alive, just as they enliven my own creative endeavors.” Judges narrowed the field of 47 participants to 18 finalists and then to the top five winners. Phyllis M. Taylor, president and CEO of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, said, “We wanted to capture the voices and creativity of our city’s youth during this tricentennial year. We were amazed by the breadth of talent and depth of emotions that these young artists expressed for the city they love.”

Five St. Mary’s Dominican High School students were among the honorees recognized for their commitment to their parishes in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The Youth Leadership Awards were held at St. Louis Cathedral. The National St. Timothy Award for leadership, at both the parish and archdiocesan levels, was presented to 13 high school seniors. There were 46 parish youth ministries, with 107 teenagers recognized with Outstanding Parish Youth Awards. OUTSTANDING YOUTH AWARD Among the Outstanding Youth Award honorees were Maggie Latham (St. Matthew the Apostle), Mackie Foret (St. Matthew the Apostle), Pelarr Edwards (Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Kenner), and Jennifer Yrle (St. Francis Xavier). The award recognizes the honorees’ leadership and service in their Church parish. ST. TIMOTHY AWARD Saheba Cuccia (Holy Name of Jesus Parish) was among the recipients of The St. Timothy Award, the highest award the Archdiocese of New Orleans can bestow upon a young person. The national award recognizes, on a diocesan level, outstanding youth who exemplify Christian service, Catholic leadership, and good moral standards. The youth who receive this award are not only outstanding in their church parish, but also in the larger archdiocesan community. These individuals have displayed high ideals and have grown spiritually while offering their time and talents in the service of the church parish and the community at large.

Leadership, Faculty & RETIREES BEGIN THEIR NEXT CHAPTER For three retirees of St. Mary’s Dominican High School, the end of the school term marked the beginning of the next chapter in their lives. Religion teacher Frank Cusimano, Librarian Susan Susan Finney, President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas, Frank Finney, and Cusimano, Karen Plauche, and Principal Carolyn Favre. Science teacher Karen Plauche represent 57 cumulative years of service at Dominican. They do not anticipate slowing their pace as they look forward to traveling, volunteering, and more family time, especially with grandchildren. They have special memories of their careers and advice for those who follow in their paths. Cusimano taught US History and later Religion. He found most rewarding, “experiencing the students' progress in learning the subject matter and applying that learning in their daily lives. It also was rewarding to teach students to have a personal relationship with Jesus. Making the subject matter come alive for the students was challenging and rewarding. Some of the happiest years of my life have been at Dominican. I have met and worked with some of the kindest and most helpful people one could ever meet, and thank everyone for their love and kindness. May God bless all with a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Dominican, for giving me the opportunity to teach.” A fond memory was working for school President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas, “a truly holy person, she is most personable and easy to approach about school and spiritual matters,” shared Cusimano. “I will always remember and cherish the friendships I made here. Dominican gave me the opportunity to realize my dream of teaching students about the love of God and about U.S. History.” He advised teachers, “to care about the students in wanting and helping them to succeed. What is important is to help them succeed outside the classroom by having a strong faith in God and by believing in themselves.” Finney considered her years as Dominican's Librarian, “my second go-round of a Dominican education. As a graduate, I felt privileged to experience it again and see, from older eyes, the quality of learning that takes place there. It is still the best. For new teachers, do not lose sight of the big picture. Do not get bogged down by the details that can invade teaching. Have confidence in your talents. I am always impressed by the quality of teaching and teachers at Dominican.” In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she recalled working on campus, at Rummel T, and witnessing the efforts to reopen the school and rebuild the library. “I will miss sitting around the various lunch tables and talking about just about anything. Mostly, I am taking with me more than just a memory of Sr. Angeline as a co-worker,” she shared. “You can appreciate a

person on new levels when you work together, and our small department of two gave me that opportunity. I know the dedication of our sisters on campus to the continued education of young women.” Plauche recalls those, “light bulb moments when you can see by the expression on a student’s face that she understands a concept she’s been struggling with. A shared high five or fist bump makes it special for both of us! I am also so humbled and grateful when I get a visit or a message from a former student and she fondly remembers specific things about our class. It is super rewarding to see all the incredible accomplishments of former students. Collecting 23 years of memories teaching at Dominican makes it challenging to pick out one special memory, but it is the postHurricane Katrina school recovery that stands out in Plauche's mind. “It was the camaraderie and dedication of a group of Dominican employees, fondly known as the Jani-Queens, who worked tirelessly for months to get Dominican back up and running. After putting in a very physical full day on campus, some went to gut their flooded homes in the evening. The anticipation of reopening and the excitement when it happened was so emotional for all! The Lord works in mysterious ways. One of my fondest memories is associated with a natural disaster…well, I did teach Earth Science.” Her advice to teachers: Make time for you, every day. “Sometimes it can feel like you’re on 24/7, but if you let your candle burn down too far, you won’t have enough spark left to light-up your students. Follow your heart, and laugh more than you lecture.”

At the Southern Dominican Province November gala, Dominican President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas received the 2018 St. Martin de Porres Award. The award recognizes individuals who are dedicated to the mission of the Dominican Order and who emulate St. Martin’s spirit of compassion, mercy, and the search for truth. For Dr. Thomas, a Dominican Associate (O.P.A.), the Dominican tradition has been a part of life since childhood in Independence, Louisiana. Her family’s parish church was staffed by the Dominican Friars and she attended Mater Dolorosa Elementary School, staffed by the St. Mary’s Dominican Sisters. Dr. Thomas has served many years in Catholic education, holding positions in faculty and administration. In 1997, she was appointed Dominican’s first lay president. Prior to that appointment, she served as the school’s first lay principal for five years. Dr. Thomas received a Doctorate of Education from Spalding University, a Master of Education from University of Holy Cross, and a Master of Religious Education from Loyola University New Orleans. She serves on several boards.
BYRNE HONORED AS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Assistant Principal Patricia Warren Byrne, MS, (’75) received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools, recognizing how she has magnified Christ in the academic, personal, spiritual, family, and professional areas of her life. A Catholic educator of 38 years, the last 16 at Dominican, she taught Mathematics and was Department Chair.

As Assistant Principal, she is responsible for professional development, grades, and technology. A love of math gives her a unique talent of making the subject accessible for students who do not understand it. As Dominican’s AdvancED liaison and responsible for the Title II and IV programs, she has led Dominican in responsible paths toward school improvement. In addition to serving her students with compassion and care, her greatest contribution to Dominican has been in the research and development of technology plans and policy and implementation of educational technology into the curriculum. Instrumental in bringing Dominican’s STREAM™ initiative to fruition, she believes all students need to be prepared for success in the 21st century, and teaching them technology skills and good digital citizenship is key to their future success.

Volleyball Pink Game
St. Mary’s Dominican High School and Archbishop Chapelle High School Team Up in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Marking its 10th year of the Pink Volleyball games, St. Mary’s Dominican High School students and fans donned brightly colored pink attire and filled the bleachers of Siena Gym for the game against Archbishop Chapelle High School to raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. All game proceeds support breast cancer patients through Tulane Cancer Center’s Patient Relief Fund. Team members from the two schools presented family members with pink roses. Game day fare included Café du Monde beignets, Plum Street Snoballs, Parade of Prizes, raffle, bake sale, and the Dominican Dad’s Club concessions. Dominican’s “Paint The Pitt” Pink Volleyball Games this year raised $13,503.70. “Since Dominican played the first pink games in 2008, we have raised more than $70,000,” said Paul Spitzfaden, Dominican’s Athletic Director. “Our schools and community come together each year for a cause that touches countless lives. In the Pink Games, everyone is a winner.” In January, Dominican joined student athletes from Archbishop Chapelle, Archbishop Shaw, Cabrini, Mount Carmel, St. Scholastica and Loyola University to present to Tulane Cancer Center a $38,505 check – cumulative proceeds from each school’s “Pink Games” fundraisers held last fall. The check will support the Cancer Center’s Patient Relief Fund that provides financial assistance for those facing a cancer diagnosis as well as financial burdens that could become barriers to their care.

he Lou Reilly Award is presented in memory of a wonderful Dominican graduate. For many years she served the community as an educator with a special love for athletics and student athletes. She saw athletic competition and sportsmanship as an important part of the Dominican High School spirit. The award recognizes the athlete who continually tries to improve her skills and listens to her coaches and teammates. This athlete encourages her teammates and gives her full effort at each moment. The student athletes themselves have a nominating vote in the selection of award recipients. The final decision is left to the discretion of the coaches.

Community Involvement Sweet Treats
Thanksgiving Baskets
Dominican students brought to school a bounty of sweets, with personal thank you notes, as their special gift of appreciation for the annual Sweet Friday for the New Orleans Police Department Headquarters and Emergency Medical Services. Representatives from NOPD Headquarters and EMS stopped by to meet students and pick up the sweets.
Easter Cheer
Students in the Ecology and Stewardship Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Art Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Robotics Club collected food items and sweets for Easter bags of cheer that were given to 35 families who reside at the Pine Street Apartments near campus. Each family also received a ham.
Dominican’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive collected donations from homerooms, clubs, athletic teams, and personnel for 93 Thanksgiving baskets that were distributed in conjunction with St. Rita Parish and Xavier University to provide 800 Thanksgiving meals for families in the Gert Town community. Dominican alumnae donated 12 Thanksgiving baskets to the school’s annual food collection. The Christian Leadership Council (CLC) organized the baskets and assisted with pick-up by Dominican Dads Club members. Leidenheimer Baking Company donated more than 100 bags of fresh rolls and breadcrumbs. St. Rita Catholic Church and Elementary School and Mary Queen of Peace Church in Mandeville donated turkeys to complete the Thanksgiving baskets. CLC officers assisted with baskets distribution from the Xavier University Community Outreach Center.
Service Class Retreats
Reflection, prayers, and community service were the focus of the annual freshmen and sophomores retreats on campus. Freshmen made sandwiches for clients of Lantern Light Ministry. Lantern Light collaborates with St. Joseph Church, the Fr. Harry Tompson Center, and DePaul USA to serve the homeless population of New Orleans. Students also made Blessing Bags that were filled with water, socks, crackers, granola bars, tissue, and other personal items. At the closing of the retreat, each student took Blessing Bags to share with persons in need that they encountered in the community. Sophomores made Beauty Bags of full-sized bottles of soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, plus loofahs, and hairbrushes. Students decorated the bags and made cards with notes affirming the beauty of women. These bags were donated to Eden House which provides a home for women who are survivors of human trafficking.

Community Involvement Adopt-A-Family Dominican brought the spirit of Christmas to 224 individuals when the school community adopted 45 families and 75 individuals from various agencies for the annual Adopt-aFamily schoolwide service project. Gifts were delivered to Metropolitan Center for Women and Children, St. Augustine Church, St. Rita Church in New Orleans, the Dominican Peace Center, and several Catholic Charities agencies that included Incarnate Word Head Start, St. Paul the Apostle Head Start, Refugee Services, Ciara Permanent Housing, St. Vincent, and Voyage House. Families were adopted by religion classes and personnel members. Christian Leadership Council helped with the gifts’ coordination and organization. The Dads Club members packed their vehicles and made deliveries to the agencies.
Second Harvest Canned Food Drive

St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s 20th annual food drive collected 15,186 cans of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank, representing an estimated 13,380 pounds of donations. “Dominican’s donation would equate to 11,150 meals,” said Jay Vice, Director of Marketing and Communications at Second Harvest Food Bank. Dominican’s one-week food drive kicked off with a spirited “Everyone CAN Be a Hero … By Fighting Hunger!" video, featuring the religion faculty and staff in Superheroes attire. Dominican’s annual food drive is the largest school drive in the Greater New Orleans Area. The lifetime poundage donated by the Dominican drives total 157,959 pounds, or the equivalent of 131,632 meals.

The drive supports the Second Harvest Food Bank that provides food and support to 700+ community partners and programs across 23 parishes. The staff and volunteers distribute the equivalent of more than 32 million meals to 210,000+ people a year. Approximately one-fourth of those served are seniors. In Louisiana, one in five people struggle with hunger. Louisiana and The Greater New Orleans Area rank second in the nation for food hardship – the lack of money to buy food that families need.

Survey says ... it's time to play Family Feud! Science teachers took on the Religion teachers in an exciting round of Family Feud.
SUDDEN IMPACT LESSONS Dominican Sophomores learned life lessons about the consequences of impaired driving, distracted driving, and not using a seat belt when they attended a Sudden Impact program at University Medical Center (UMC) and Touro Infirmary. The seven-hour program for high school sophomores was created by the LSU Level 1 Trauma Center in New Orleans and the Louisiana State Police. During the UMC visit, students met Ashlee Stokes and her father David Stokes. In 2008, Ashlee was severely injured in a car crash caused by a drunk driver. The Stokes family shared Ashlee’s story to educate others about the impact of impaired and distracted driving. Sudden Impact was designed to prevent fatalities and injuries from driving impaired, distracted, and/or unrestrained and provides testimony to the ramifications of driving while impaired from a medical, law enforcement, and victim perspective.
Dominican students concluded their Loyola Law School visit with a tour of the Moot Court Room and the L. Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice where law students work on behalf of clients who are unable to pay for legal services.
MRS. GAYLE BENSON GIVES INSPRING TALK ABOUT WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP In a surprise visit to the student assembly, Mrs. Gayle Benson gave an inspiring address about women’s leadership and how a strong foundation of faith has always guided her throughout her lifetime of leadership roles in several careers. After her address, Dominican named Mrs. Benson an Honorary Alumna. Principal Carolyn Favre presented her with a diploma from the school. School President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas presented Mrs. Benson with a Dominican pendant that features the senior class ring’s blue stone and the school crest. The students gave their special guest a Second Line sendoff with the Dominican Marching Band performing, “When The Saints Go Marching In.”
LESSONS IN THE LAW Students in Ms. Anne Comiskey’s Law Studies class received real world experience from guest lecturers Dean Mary Garvey Algero and John Sudderth. Algero, a 1982 Dominican graduate, is the Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs and Warren E. Mouledoux Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola University. She directs the Legal Research and Writing Program and co-directs the Westerfield Fellows Program. She presented to the class the Socratic method, the type of instruction they would receive in law school. The class also visited Loyola University’s Law School for a guided tour. The visit included attending presentations on a variety of subjects, including present-day Louisiana law and the law school experience.

As part of observance of Black History Month, guest speaker Anastacia Scott, Ph.D., Leventhal Education Specialist at the Amistad Research Center, presented, “Looking Ahead to Our Future, While Celebrating Our Past.” The presentation highlighted prominent women from the early 20th century through the Civil Rights era in New Orleans, and students participated in a didactive activity and discussions.

Fr. Scarel told the students, “Climate change is not just beliefs or opinions. It is based on scientific facts and the need for dialogue. My hope is that you and other young people are inspired to look for more information, have dialogue, and be part of change.”
POPE’S CLIMATOLOGIST RETURNS TO DOMINICAN During a New Orleans visit in March, world-renowned atmospheric scientist Fr. Eduardo Scarel, O. Carm., known as Pope Francis’ climatologist, returned to St. Mary’s Dominican High School for a presentation on climate change and faith. It was Fr. Scarel’s second visit to Dominican. In January 2016, he shared research and insights on climate change and the care of the poor and nature. Speaking to Dominican’s biology, history, physics, and religion classes, he spoke on, “Environmental Justice as Seen Through the Lens of Laudato Si’.” Written in 2015 by Pope Francis, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, Fr. Scarel noted that it is the first encyclical in church history focused exclusively on care for the environment and nature, and a call for social and environmental justice. The Argentinian priest said his talk was designed to inspire a wide audience – students, academicians, and anyone interested in how faith and scientific issues of climate change intersect.
COMPUTER SCIENCE BUILDS BOARD GAMES Students in Ms. Charlene Ford’s Computer Science Elective learned about coding and applying skills using Micro:bits, a handheld, programmable micro-computer. For this project, students worked in pairs to design and construct board games. The Micro:bits had to be used for at least three tasks: simulate rolling dice, indicate which direction to move a game piece, keep score, tell the player to pick a card, or anything else needed to play the game. In class, student groups swapped games and did beta-testing to make sure the coding and game instructions worked properly before they turned in their final projects.

PATHS TO A VOCATIONAL LIFE Addressing an assembly of 8th graders and freshman, Sister Evelyn N. Okoye, SSH, Sr. Gloria Murillo, STJ, and Sr. Kathy Broussard, OP shared with the students the courses they took to their commitment and the rewards from their diverse work today. The sisters were part of a program coordinated by Sr. June Fitzgerald, O.P. Vocation Minister, Dominican Sisters of Peace, in observance of Women’s History Month and National Catholic Sisters Week. Student preacher Bailey Mipro served as moderator.
SEEING SHAKESPEARE ON STAGE In January, nearly 500 Dominican students attended the production of “Macbeth” performed by the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane University’s Dixon Concert Hall. Students enjoyed the play on stage as Shakespeare intended. Students had the opportunity to see the production, thanks to the 18 in '18 Patrick F. Taylor Foundation Competition funds won for the school by senior Ella Cheramie.

CUBAN-AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHT AND FILMMAKER IVÁN ACOSTA SHARES LIFE EXPERIENCES Addressing the student assembly, renowned Cuban-American author, filmmaker, and playwright Iván Acosta shared his career path and life experiences as an immigrant from Cuba. His St. Mary’s Dominican High School visit was among several New Orleans events co-sponsored by the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation (NOHHF) and Tulane University’s Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15- October 15). Dominican was among the collaborators with NOHFF and Tulane.
THE MOTHER OF NORMANDY COMES TO DOMINICAN In the early morning darkness of June 6, 1944, a group of U.S. paratroopers descended into a deadly firefight in the town square of Sainte-Mère-Église, France. Simone Renaud watched as German forces turned their machine guns on the misdropped 82nd Airborne Division soldiers who gave their lives to begin the Allied invasion that 11 months later would liberate Europe. Seventyfive years later, the life of Simone Renaud was presented by a group of young actors from France to students in US History, World History, and English classes at Dominican. Called The Mother of Normandy, this remarkable woman’s devotion to a generation of heroes crossed an ocean and transcended all boundaries. Madame Renaud was the wife of Alexandre Renaud, the World War II mayor of Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated on D-Day. In the days and weeks that followed, as the U.S. wounded and dead passed before her eyes, she made a simple vow that would last the rest of her life, and beyond – “Never forget." The weeks following D-Day, she took it upon herself to care for the graves of an estimated 15,000 U.S. troops that were buried in three temporary cemeteries in and around the town. For 44 years, until her death in 1988, she was dedicated to tending the graves and cemeteries until all the remains were moved to the National Cemetery in Normandy.
CHRISTMAS CARD DESIGN FOR THE DOMINICAN SISTERS OF PEACE Artwork by Dominican Junior Celeste Patron graced one of the four annual Christmas cards of the Dominican Sisters of Peace Congregation. Patron’s work was selected from among more than 600 pieces of art by students from the Congregation’s founded elementary and high schools in Memphis, TN; Akron, OH, and New Orleans who submitted their entries on the theme, “A Prayer of Peace for Christmas.” Her entry of the Nativity Scene with a stained glass treatment was among submitted work by fellow students’ in art classes.
A SERVING OF HISTORY LESSONS AT DOOKY CHASE’S A visit to Dooky Chase’s Restaurant at 2301 Orleans Avenue in Treme included a serving of the restaurant’s signature creole cuisine and history lessons to students in the Students for Human Dignity and Diversity in Action organization. Joining them for a picture in front of the iconic artwork were organization co-moderators Dr. Maureen Wright (Chair, Dominican’s Board of Directors) and Vallerie Maurice (Coordinator, Unity in Diversity). After reading the NOLA4Women website about the legacy of Mrs. Leah Chase, Dominican President Dr. Thomas suggested the visit to Ms. Maurice. CRIME LAB TEAM MEETS BIOTECHNOLOGY CLUB The Biotechnology Club welcomed a visit from the staff of the NOPD Scientific Criminal Investigations (SCIS) Division, also known as Crime Lab. Commander Darryl Albert and the Crime Lab team of crime scene investigators gave an overview of their work and answered questions from the club members. The members also participated in a demonstration of developing latent fingerprints using magnetic powder.

“When I told the students about dining in one of the restaurant’s private rooms and Mrs. Chase who was a world renowned chef, civil rights activist, author, and philanthropist, it wasn’t hard to get a quick list of students together,” said Ms. Maurice. The field trip, part of Black History Month observance, was supported by a monetary gift that Dr. Thomas received from the Dominican Sisters at the time that she was presented with the St. Martin de Porres Award from the Southern Dominican Province of the Dominican Friars.

DOMINICAN ENGINEERING COURSE BUILDS KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE Engineering students applied their knowledge outside the classroom. In March, they received the Rookie Team Award for their exceptional performance and placed 4th out of 24, beating several college teams in the Louisiana Collegiate Design Competition (LCDC) held at Louisiana State University. Dominican’s Engineering Team members were Catherine Bickerton, Victoria Chan, Olivia Cheung, Mia Nguyen, and Anita Whitner. Mr. Lannes was coach and moderator of Dominican’s team. Dominican was one of three high schools that competed at the event that also drew college teams, hosted by the Society of Peer Mentors from the LSU College of Engineering. LCDC is a student-driven, student organized engineering competition focused on developing skills in leadership, teamwork, networking, and applying engineering knowledge for its participants.

Bridge building, patents for engineering professionals, and team competition at the collegiate level were among the highlights of the inaugural year for Introduction to Engineering Course at Dominican. The engineering course covers the basic concepts and equations in several fields of engineering, including electrical, mechanical, and civil. Other subjects covered in the two-semester curriculum were the concept of time/frequency transformations based on Fourier's work, Matrix Manipulation, and Matlab programming. The course began with basic circuit analysis and builds on this concept. Applications of fundamental mathematical function to engineering problems are explained and expanded on. Topics included fundamentals of computers, electricity, mechanical forces, alternative energy sources, the US patent process, the intersection of architecture and civil engineering, the role of art in engineering, music – its history and ties to engineering, and an overview of Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. “The goal is for the student to master basic mathematical derivations for engineering circuits and problems, and solve them to a high degree of confidence,” said instructor and engineer Mr. Kenneth Lannes. “This includes concepts of energy, power, force, voltage, current, and velocity, and a more general exposure to the entire engineering industry.” Students in Mr. Lannes’ engineering classes had a hands-on approach with lessons.

Using glue and Popsicle sticks, applied their knowledge of the basic physics (shear loads and bending moments) of bridges. Teams experimented with shapes to determine which ones were the strongest structurally, and collaborated on design and construction. The final test of their completed bridges was the weight-bearing test, starting with a 500-gram weight.
Students also learned about patents and trademarks from guest speaker Juan J. Lizarraga. The engineer and attorney brought a unique perspective on the subject with his talk, “The ‘Arcane Art’ of Patents for Engineering Professionals. Lizarraga is partner at the New Orleans law firm of Milling, Benson, Woodward L.L.P, and Chair of the Intellectual Law Department. He also is a registered professional engineer in Louisiana and a registered patent attorney admitted to practice in Louisiana and Texas, as well as before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He has served as Chair of the Intellectual Property Law Committee of the New Orleans Bar Association, and is past Chairman of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Louisiana State Bar Association. Among his numerous professional memberships are the American Intellectual Property Law Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

Capping off the end of the school term, students were introduced to welding, with a demonstration by Mr. Lannes. Welding involves electric circuits that are used to generate welding arcs and there are metallurgical and dimensional effects of welding on structures. ROBOTICS TEAMS POST WINS AT STATE QUALIFIER At the First Tech Challenge Competition held at Destrehan High School on December 1st, the Dominican Robotics Teams took the following wins: Team 11526 won first place in the Innovate Award and qualified for the State Competition. Team 9637 won second in Design, third in Innovate, second in Think and first place for the Inspire award which is the highest award given at this competition. They also qualified for the state competition.

The Dominican Valkyries Team won 3rd Place for the Inspire Award, the highest award given at the competition. They also took 1st Place for the Motivate Award and 2nd Place for the Connect Award. Team members were Catherine Bickerton, Lauren Cage, Victoria Chan, Olivia Cheung, Kayla Nguyen, Mia Nguyen, Onyinyechi Okeke, Abigayle Rainey, Anita Whitner, and Josie Wood. Dominican’s Ultra Violet Robotics Team won 1st Place for the Think Award. They also placed 2nd in Design. Academic Games Nationals FRESHMEN BRING HOME WINS AT ACADEMIC GAMES NATIONALS At the National level Academic Games League of America competition in Orlando, Dominican freshmen Elizabeth Mobley (far left) and Ashley Barron (second from left) brought home several wins and a Blue Thinker trophy. Elizabeth placed second overall in the junior division from a field of 174 players. She placed second in Presidents after tying for first with one other player and having a playoff, and placed 3rd in Linguistic after tying for first with two other players and having a playoff. In the Propaganda event, Elizabeth and Ashley tied for 5th with their team (mixed with two Ben Franklin players and one player from Brother Martin). For the On-Sets, Elizabeth tied for 6th with six other players. Ashley, who competed for the first time at Nationals, placed 88th overall.

SAVING LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN BY DESIGN When Dominican student Celeste Patron heard a presentation at a Biotechnology Club meeting by Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) Education Coordinator Anne Barrett, the junior was inspired. “The speaker informed us about the huge impact we were having on our lake,” recalled Patron. “She also stressed to us the importance of taking care of the lake and being mindful of what we allow through the storm drains.” Dominican science teacher and Biotechnology Club Moderator Janine Koenig invited students in Dominican’s National Art Honor Society, Biology II classes and Biotechnology Club to submit designs for a LPBF contest. An inspired Patron created a design that was accepted for LPBF’s Vive Notre Lac Program: The Next 300 Challenge. “The program is about New Orleans and its history with water, and looking toward the next 300 years,” explained Koenig. The selected design would become a decal and applied to a storm drain as part of LPBF’s educational efforts to raise public awareness about Lake Pontchartrain. “When I heard that the LPBF was looking for someone to design a decal for storm drains to spread awareness, I knew I wanted to be involved,” Patron said. “I’ve always been passionate about art and science, and to have my work immortalized in the city means a lot to me. It allows me to have an impact on the identity of the city, even if in a small way.”
DEBS RETURN FROM ORLANDO NATIONALLY RANKED The Dominican Debs competed at the Universal Dance Association National Dance Team Championship, held February 1-3 in Orlando. They competed in the Small Varsity Jazz division with 88 teams, Small Varsity Hip Hop division with 40 teams, and Large Game Day division with 22 teams. The Debs Game Day team earned national ranking when it finished 9th out of 22 teams! DEBS CAPTURE STATE WINS The Dominican Debs took home several wins at the American All-Star Louisiana State Dance Competition January 19-20 in Lafayette. They competed in Division 3 that included Archbishop Chapelle, Jesuit, Mount Carmel Academy, and Ouachita High School. The Debs brought home the following wins: JAZZ — First place in their division; placed third out of 15 teams over all divisions. POM — First place in their division; placed second out of 21 teams over all divisions. HIP HOP — First place in their division. OPEN — Second place in their division; placed third out of 15 teams over all divisions. JAZZ TRIO — Carlie Bujol, Reiley Macicek, and Claire Oster placed second out of 10 ensembles. DUET — Brooke Babin and Madeline Kerber placed third out of nine junior high duets. SOLOISTS — Adelaide Rodrigue placed fifth out of 15 junior high soloists; Katelin Obletz placed third out of 21 high school soloists; Virginia Babin placed second out of 21 senior soloists.
Patron’s artwork is on the Walmsley Street storm drain, in front of the school. It depicts the negative impact humans have on Lake Pontchartrain when they allow trash and waste to flow into it through the storm drains. “The person I drew on the left is dropping his trash straight into the lake, disrupting the ecosystem and wreaking havoc on the biodiversity,” explained the artist. “People in the city often neglect to realize the implications of what goes into the storm drains; anything from trash to leaves to chemicals from your garden can harm the lake. The woman on the right represents what citizens should aspire to be. She knows what will hurt the lake, so she takes the initiative to put trash where it belongs, instead of allowing it to flow into the lake.”
Speech and Debate Team SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM TACKLES COMPETITIONS The Speech and Debate Team sharpened their skills at several events, culminating with a February 1- 2 tournament, hosted at Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans. Dominican was among 14 schools that competed at the tournament, with 14 teams in the Public Forum. Freshmen Haneen Awadallah and Ysabella Porche placed 3rd in Public Forum debate and junior Alyssa Ordoyne who competed in Senior Impromptu. Coaches of the Dominican team are Ms. Kristina Plunkett and Mr. Andrew Cerise. Team moderators are Mr. Cameron Hahne and Ms. Cynthia Donnelly. Other events during the school term were: September 28-29, Holy Cross High School; November 30 - December 1, St. Augustine High School; December 7- 8 tournament at Isidore Newman High School, that drew more than 600 students and the opportunity for students to learn from some of the top teams in the country.

Special School Events Diamonds are Forever Legacy Gala Diamonds are Forever was the theme for the February 16 Legacy Gala on campus. Breakfast with Baby Jesus Children of all ages celebrated the Christmas season with family and friends at St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Breakfast with Baby Jesus. Nearly 400 attended the December 9th event, hosted by the Alumnae Association. A Living Nativity, presented by the Dominican High School Drama Club, took center stage in the Sr. Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Gymnasium. School President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas led everyone in singing “Happy Birthday, Baby Jesus” before cutting the cake.
At crafts tables, young visitors made angel necklaces, snow globes, ornaments, and decorated Rice Krispie treats. Mrs. Claus read Christmas stories to attentive listeners and children took keepsake photos with Santa Claus. Entertainment by merry elves added to the festive celebration.

Special Alumnae Events Lenten Evening of Reflection At the Lenten Evening of Reflection, alumnae, family, and friends of Dominican gathered in Alumnae Hall for a Lenten reflection offered by Fr. John Restrepo, O.P., school chaplain. Fr. Harry Grile, C.Ss.R., Fr. Cayet Mangiaracina, O.P., Fr. Robert Massett, and Fr. Restrepo, O.P. offered the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Following Reconciliation, Fr. Grile celebrated Mass. The evening concluded with dinner.
Easter Egg Roll St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Easter Egg Roll, hosted by the Alumnae Association, welcomed more than 400 guests of all ages. In the Peace Garden, toddlers searched for eggs while the older children canvassed the quad for a bounty of brightly colored eggs. Finders of gold eggs discovered inside of them a special ticket for selecting a prize. The petting zoo offered a closer look at rabbits, chickens, baby pigs, pigmy goats, baby alligators, and other four-legged friends. Children also made colorful crafts and met the Easter Bunny for photos. Festivities closed with the release of nearly 200 butterflies.

Alumnae Homecoming weekend
lumnae returned home for their annual Homecoming, with a Thanksgiving Mass and Luncheon at their alma mater on April 6. In addition to the Classes of 1959, 1969, and 1979 celebrating their 60th, 50th, and 40th anniversaries, alumnae represented 31 classes.
Nominated by fellow alumnae, Jennifer Lucy Avegno, MD was honored as Alumna of the Year. Dr. Avegno's life exemplifies the ideals that Dominican tries to instill in its students as described by the Profile of a Dominican Graduate.

Following the celebration of Mass in Alumnae Hall, Jennifer Lucy Avegno, MD (Class of 1989), was named 2019 Alumna of the Year, and recognized by her peers as a woman who instills Catholic values while urging the practice of ethical behaviors as demonstrated through her dedication to family, public service, or career. She was saluted for her passion in reaching out to the disenfranchised, the lonely, the ignored, and the sick. Described as a shining example of the call to be the light of Christ for others, she has championed tirelessly for every person to have access to excellent health care. Regardless how beaten or broken or frail her patients may seem to others, she sees the goodness in all of them and helps them to see their potential for greatness.
The Director of the Health Department for New Orleans since 2018, Dr. Avegno works with a dedicated team of public health professionals in addressing critical health needs for the community. Her clinical, program, and research interests include the role of social determinants of health, particularly access and barriers to care; health equity; violence intervention/prevention; sexual assault and human trafficking; and homelessness. “My own Dominican experience – though I did not realize it at the time – forged a deep commitment to critical thinking, questioning easy answers, desire for service, and love of community,” she said in her acceptance speech.

My search for Veritas is grounded in my Dominican education and the women in my family who shaped me, and it is a continual journey.
Dr. Avegno’s Dominican roots span four generations. Her mother, Royann Avegno, whose career includes teaching at Dominican, was named Alumna of the Year in 1995. Currently, the two are the only mother and daughter in the school’s history who share the honor. This school year, Dr. Avegno’s daughter, Lucy, started at Dominican. For the honoree, her children’s legacy “remains to be seen, their truth yet to be understood,” she said. “But what comfort that they have 80 years of personal history and more than twice that here at this institution to ground them in the core belief of God’s love and truth in their lives. I am proud to represent all of the women in my family today, and we pledge our commitment to Veritas for generations to come.”

Grace - A Process
All About Alumnae “I was teaching Spanish at Ursuline Academy, but was not sure if I should continue teaching. Looking back, it was a blessing that I was teaching. The religious life had not been on my radar, but then it made sense for me to investigate this as an option,” she recalled and described her discernment as a process “from my head to my heart. I came to understand God’s love for me. It became deeply personal.”

On April 28, 2019, Divine Mercy Sunday, Victoria Grefer entered The Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary to join the community as a postulant. Situated on the top of a hill in Summit, New Jersey, the Dominican monastery was founded in 1919 by a group of 14 sisters from Union City, NJ. It was established with the mission of praying without ceasing, especially the rosary. In 1926, the monastery also began the practice of perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Victoria, a 2003 Dominican graduate, called her path of discernment “a process of grace.” However, in the early stages she did not understand its value and purpose. Her journey began in 2015. Along the way, there were detours and pauses – not one does she regret. “I wanted to pursue a career, but did not have a purpose in life. I was deeply unfulfilled and kept asking myself – ‘Why?’” She withdrew from the University of Chicago where she was pursuing a doctorate in Spanish literature and returned home to New Orleans. There she began a life of prayer and gradually became more aware of her restlessness. She committed to devotion time at her church’s adoration chapel at Holy Name of Jesus. She prayed for guidance.
Victoria visited the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Covington, Louisiana. Following more prayer and discernment, it became apparent to Victoria that she should explore the Dominican Order. The Dominican monastic life is unlike the Benedictines, Trappists or Carmelites because of its emphasis on community. A Dominican Sister makes her profession on the Rule of St. Augustine. Inspired from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Augustine’s Rule combines consecrated status with a full, common life. The website of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary notes, “The Rule of St. Augustine is built around the notion of twin forms of charity – love of God and love of neighbor. This means that fraternal life – the fraternitas that was so dear to St. Dominic himself, is at the very heart of our way of life. In our spiritual tradition, monastic life is by no means a single or solitary combat, but a community adventure. Hermits have no official status in our Order...” Before one takes final vows to become a nun of the Order of Preachers, there are stages of formation for all who enter the monastery – initial contact, discernment retreat, aspirancy, postulancy, novitiate, first profession, and solemn profession. The one-year postulancy includes classes with other sisters who are in the novitiate where they become acquainted with the basics of the Dominican charism, prayer, Sacred Scriptures and community life.

rist in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Victoria came to understand fully that engagement and continuing her intellectual pursuit was valuable. A silent retreat in July 2017 at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center was a turning point in Victoria’s journey. The retreat gave her “the spark to visit the monastery in Summit, to reach out to the community for the first time.” Several trips to the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary followed. Over the 2017 Labor Day weekend, she met individually with four of their sisters, and the entire novitiate. Victoria said she was “struck how much at home I felt. There was a sense of belonging that became more and more profound after each day.” At the Sunday Mass, the second reading from Romans 12 gave Victoria affirmation that this is where she was meant to be: I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Gaining insight into the monastic life requires time, observed Victoria. “There are defining times when you understand this is real life. It is not an escape. The Divine Office was when I truly felt the purpose and the power.” Returning home, she said that she was “95 percent sure” she would begin the multilayered application process to the Order. Constant and unwavering in Victoria’s journey has been her family’s support. Parents Archie and Brenda, and other family members accompanied Victoria when she entered the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary. Looking forward to this next chapter in her life, Victoria reflected, “It has been a full process to understand this call to service. This is how I was meant to serve the Church.” Victoria Grefer stands by the stained glass depiction of The Virgin Mary displayed in the foyer of her alma mater, St. Mary’s Dominican High School.
Victoria credited her formative years at St. Mary’s Dominican High School as giving her a strong sense of the Dominican charism – prayer, study, community, and service. Carol Faber Combe and her brother Edgar Faber, crossed the finish life of the Crescent City Classic 10K Race, held on Holy Saturday, April 20. The race drew more than 20,000 participants. Carol challenges Dominican alumnae to join her at next year’s race. She has done the race since 2006 and said, “It took us only 15 minutes over our usual two-hour strut!”
Joann Schwartz Haydel will begin her career at Dominican teaching Science this Fall. Joann received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University and a Master of Art in Science Teaching from University of New Orleans. She has taught middle school and high school, and was recently the Education Director for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.

1973 Jill Basile Hitchins is director of the Bell Choir at St. Michael Special School where she has also directed the vocal music instruction since 2015. Trained in three musical instruments and voice, and with a masters in Special Education from University of New Orleans, Jill has taught English Language Arts and Life Skills to students with special needs since 1978. She transitioned to the Bell Choir Director position in 2000 and arranges music for a variety of sacred, holiday, inspirational and popular selections. In 2006, Jill also established a special needs inclusion program at the Contemporary Arts Center as part of their Summer Arts Camp, where she was on the staff for 11 eleven years. The program continues to serve the community.
1990 Jennifer Gniady has joined as Counsel with Stradley Ronon law firm’s Washington, DC office. Her work includes representing churches, schools, and charities on issues related to taxexemption and the First Amendment.

Laura Massey Hernandez, Ph.D., LPC-S, NCC joins Dominican’s Counseling Department this fall. She has worked in the private practice setting, and has 18 years of experience as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in a school setting. Laura graduated in the top of her class from Loyola University New Orleans, with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, gaining early entry into graduate school and earning the award of “Outstanding Graduate in Elementary Education.” She earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, and a master’s degree in Marriage Counseling, from The University of Holy Cross.
1997 and 2004 Allison Ann Lowe is making a difference in New Orleans public education. She is principal of Akili Academy, an open enrollment charter school in the upper ninth war. The school was recognized this year for having the third highest growth of all public schools in New Orleans and an a A growth school by the state. This year Kelly Cox Goodrich ’04 joined the Akili Academy team as an experienced third grade teacher. Kelly embodies the values we were taught at Dominican and she is making a huge difference in the lives of children in New Orleans. Congratulations to these educators who are working together with the Dominican connection.

2013 In the fall, Kathleen Fasold will start her Dominican career teaching English. She received a B.A. in English from Spring Hill College in May and is currently working on a masters’ degree in Library Information Studies from The University of Alabama.
2015 Brooke Duplantier is setting her post-grad table with a Master of Arts degree in Food Studies at Pittsburgh’s Chatham University, and saving a choice seat for the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) mission. She was the recipient of LMU’s 2019 Marian Award for Excellence in Leadership, Service and Academia. Brooke channeled her passion for food justice into several campus pursuits, including helping develop and run the LMU Food Pantry alongside the President of the LMU chapter of Oxfam, a non-profit dedicated to issues of poverty and hunger, and Vice President of Social Justice for Sursum Corda service organization. She hopes to take the knowledge gained in graduate school and take part in a new chain of nonprofit, community supported restaurants called, “Pay What You Eat.” This Fall, Lauren Guidroz will begin her teaching career at Dominican. In May, Lauren graduted from LSU where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, with a concentration in Graphic Design.
2017 L’Oreal Alicia Williams was elected by the Southeastern Louisiana University student body to serve as Vice President for the 2019-2020 academic school year. In July 2017, Molly Katz started her jewelry making business, “Beads by Molly.” Her individual creations can be found in 42 states, 22 boutiques, and 20 sororities across the country.
