From the President “…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23 Dear St. Mary’s Dominican High School Community, We celebrate and give God thanks for the many blessings experienced by our school community and featured in this edition of The Torch, School Year in Review! As a Catholic school, St. Mary’s Dominican High School remains a place of foundations with Jesus at the heart and the formation and education of our students as the focus. We thank our dedicated faculty and administration for all that they did to guide and support our students. Congratulations to the Class of 2026 and their families! We are grateful for all that they shared with the Dominican Community during these past years. As the graduates begin a new stage of life pursuing their dreams and aspirations, we pray as we did on graduation day the words of the Irish Blessing, “…may God hold you in the palm of His hands.” In each stage of life, God sends the Holy Spirit to guide us along the way. In the search for Truth, Veritas, we build on the pillars of Dominican life – prayer, study, community, and service as we use our gifts from the Holy Spirit to witness and preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. As members of the Dominican community, we do not journey alone. We thank God for our families, friends, and Church communities. Let us pray for each other that through each stage of life we will use every opportunity and life circumstance to grow closer to God who loves us and offers His mercy. Let us pray through the intercession of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that we will each generously respond to God’s invitation to grow in relationship with Him through the Sacraments and daily prayer. Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, we pray for our students, alumnae, families, and all benefactors and volunteers who commit their time, talent, and treasure to continue the Dominican legacy in New Orleans begun by the Dominican Sisters in 1860. On behalf of the leadership, administration, faculty, and staff, thank you for your dedication to “the school we love!” Gratefully, Cynthia A. Thomas, Ed.D. When people ask me why I love Dominican, I always say, "Dominican feels like home." And after five years, I realize that feeling comes from the bond that I share with all of you. It is the friendships we built and the memories we shared. I love you all from the bottom of my heart, and I could not have chosen a better group of girls to grow up alongside. So, while our time at Dominican has ended, it has been my greatest privilege to call this place my home and all you girls my sisters. Grace Chategnier ’26, Salutatorian

Valedictorians The Valedictory Award, presented to the honor graduate who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in her program of studies, was merited by seniors (from left): Therese Vaughn Carriere, Kristian Alexis Champagne, Peyton Ann Kuehne, Vanessa Yi Liu, Danielle Ruth Morgan, and Emily Louisiana Nathan. ----Therese Carriere is the daughter of Mr. Charles Carriere and Mrs. Leslie Carriere of Metairie. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of La Société Honoraire de Françias, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend University of Georgia. Kristian Alexis Champagne is the daughter of Mr. Jarrod Champagne and Mrs. Jennifer Champagne of Metairie. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Peyton Kuehne is the daughter of Mr. Adam Kuehne and Mrs. Kristy Kuehne of Kenner. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of La Société Honoraire de Françias, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend Colorado Christian University. Vanessa Liu is the daughter of Mr. Jian Liu and Mrs. Dong Liu of Metairie. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. She will attend Louisiana State University. Danielle Morgan is the daughter of Mr. Eric Morgan and Mrs. Brenda Morgan of New Orleans. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of La Société Honoraire de Françias, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend Colorado School of Mines. Emily Nathan is the daughter of Mr. Michael Nathan and Mrs. Maggie Kuger of New Orleans. Salutatorians

The Salutatory Award was presented to seniors Abigail Elizabeth Nuccio (left) and Grace Abigail Chategnier (right), the honor graduates who achieved the second highest cumulative grade point average in their program of studies. Grace Chategnier is the daughter of Mr. David Chategnier and Mrs. Robyn Chategnier of Metairie. She was a Dominican Scholarship Student, member of Latin Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend Louisiana State University.

Abigail Nuccio is the daughter of Mr. Christopher Nuccio and Mrs. Leslie Nuccio of Gretna. The Dominican Scholarship Student was a member of Latin Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. She will attend Louisiana State University.

Award Recipients

Veritas Award The Veritas Award was presented by St. Mary's Dominican High School President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas to Anastasia Redmann and Leah Gilmore. The Veritas Award is the most prestigious award presented to a graduating Dominican senior. Selected by the leadership, administration, and faculty, the award recipient demonstrates exemplary understanding of the Dominican Charism. Following the example of St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Dominican Order, the Veritas Award recipient faithfully strives to seek Truth through prayer, study, community, and service. She preaches the Truth of the Gospel through the example of her life and calls forth the best in others.

Service Award The Mother Mary Magdalen O’Farrell, O.P. Service Award was presented by Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas to Anastasia Redmann and Olivia Hernandez. The award recognizes the student’s outstanding, dedicated service to St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Dominican life and growth are mirrored in her reflection of the school’s philosophy by belief in God and respect for the dignity of all human beings.

Alumnae Award

The Sr. Mary Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Alumnae Award was presented by Alumnae Association President Caroline McCall ’09 to Jovie Leingang. The recipient is selected by her classmates as one who represents Dominican spirit. Dominican’s motto: “To Praise, To Bless, To Preach,” is an integral part of her life as is her commitment to truth, Veritas.

AOH Award The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Award was presented by Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas to Mia Rabalais. Selected by administration, faculty, and students, the award is given to the senior who exemplifies the motto of the AOH: friendship, unity, and Christian charity.

American Legion Award The American Legion Award was presented by Mr. James McMahon (left) and Mr. Ben Banchs (right), members of the American Legion Post 307, to Jovie Leingang in recognition of possessing the essential qualities of leadership, honor, courage, patriotism, and service to school and community.

Standing in our caps and gowns while looking back at old pictures, all the memories from the past five years have come rushing back to us. I hope we can look back fondly at the pictures capturing those dear moments and how much we’ve grown as a class. As we squeeze together and smile for the camera, we are surrounded by the people we love: our best friends. Laughing together at lunch, sharing Sage cookies and fountain drinks, getting distracted during free periods, and asking hundreds of would-you-rather questions turned these strangers into best friends. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) recognized Dominican seniors — Therese Carriere, Ashlynn Dinh, Enna Hawes, Vanessa Liu, and Emily Nathan — as finalists in the 71st annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. They were among more than 15,000 Finalists with the highest scores, representing less than one percent of the nation’s school graduating seniors. As Finalists, these academically talented high school seniors had an opportunity for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that were offered in the spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Therese Carriere was selected as a winner of a National Merit® $2500 Scholarship. Ashlyn Dinh, Enna Hawes, Vanessa Liu, and Emily Nathan were selected as winners of a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship.

In July 2025, 22 current students (Class of 2026 and 2027) and 23 graduates (Class of 2025) of St. Mary’s Dominican High School earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. AP tests are scored on a scale of 1-5.

AP Scholars

The AP Scholar designation recognizes students who earned scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Honor designation recognizes students who earned an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction designation recognizes students who earned an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scored 3 or higher on five or more AP exams.

Olivia Hernandez received the Knights of Columbus Patriotic Award. The award recognizes the senior who has displayed the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism and in doing so has shown the highest degree of citizenship by helping others, especially those who are less fortunate.

Service Service is one of the four pillars of Dominican life and collectively during their years at Dominican, the Class of 2026 completed 24,605 hours of service. 10 students earned the St. Mary’s Dominican Service Award by performing more than 400 hours.

CTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a schoolN based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Sophomores and juniors may participate. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students for the writing program. Judges across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and Taiwan evaluated each piece of writing for expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. This year, schools nominated 689 students to participate in the Achievement Awards in Writing Program.

8th grader Ana Sequeira and 12th grader Anastasia Redmann were Dominican’s Student of the Year nominees in the Louisiana Catholic School Student of the Year Program. They were nominated as outstanding students who demonstrate excellence in discipleship, leadership, service, citizenship, and academic achievement.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS CONTEST Senior Caroline Scaffidi was named a winner of the 9-12th grade Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest! The Clarion Herald, the Department of Catholic Education, and Faith Formation Council of Catholic School Cooperative Clubs sponsor the annual essay, poetry, and poster contest for students who attend Catholic elementary and high school and students who participate in Parish Schools of Religion.

Fourteen Dominican students were recognized by the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation (NOHHF) at the NOHHF Scholars Ceremony. St. Mary’s Dominican High School senior Anastasia Redmann was the recipient of the Rev. Thomas E. Chambers Scholastic Award, presented by Willwoods Community at its April 25th Gala. The $1500 award is presented each year to one graduating senior male student and one graduating senior female student from an Archdiocese of New Orleans Catholic High School. Criteria is on the candidates’ strong Catholic values, their leadership and service. The award is in memory of Father Tom who served as President of Willwoods Community from 2003 to 2018. A life-long educator and priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross for 56 years, he was Magistral Chaplain of the Order of Malta, and president of the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans.

NOHHF is a local, non-profit organization dedicated to academic excellence and the future success of Hispanic high school students. Each year, the NOHHF awards students who are involved in the Hispanic community and have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PHYSICS TEACHERS PHOTO CONTEST Dominican senior Theresa Carter’s entry, Medusa In The Spotlight, was among the top 100 winning entries in the 2025 American Association of Physics Teachers High School Physics photo contest that drew more than 600 submissions. The contest provides teachers and students with an opportunity to learn about the physics behind natural and contrived situations by creating visual and written illustrations of various physical concepts. Theresa submitted a photo of her original artwork as seen under various lighting conditions.

Student Achievement LEGISLATIVE YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

FORDHAM UNIVERSITY SUMMER LEADERS ACADEMY

St. Mary’s Dominican High School junior Lourdes Maristany was named to serve on the 20252026 Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC), coordinated by the Louisiana Commission on Civic Education. She is one of three students selected to represent her congressional district. As a member of LYAC, Lourdes hopes to support civic education and advocate for student representation in policymaking.

Dominican junior Leah Johnson participated in the 2025 Fordham University Summer Leaders Academy, where she completed Intro to Clinical Psychology, earning four college credits. Through readings, lectures, discussions, experiential exercises, and site visits, the class explored the major theoretical approaches to conceptualizing and treating mental illness, while also learning about basic techniques used in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of psychological disorders.

PREACT RISING STARS PROGRAM One hundred and four St. Mary’s Dominican High School students earned Distinguished and Rising recognition for their achievements on the PreACT® assessment. In its inaugural year, the PreACT Rising Stars program honors students who score in the top half of all US students who take the PreACT 8/9 assessment. That exam provides a preview of the ACT test experience, along with a highly reliable prediction of how students might perform on the ACT. Dominican students who earned the highest scores for the Distinguished Scholars Award were Madelyn Nguyen (10th grade), Maya Parker (9th grade), and Valentina Smith (10th grade).

At the 2025 Fall convention of Louisiana Art Educators Association (LAEA), St. Mary’s Dominican High School Fine Arts Department teacher Angelle C. Caffery, MFA, was elected Secretary and Regional Vice President for the Southeastern Region for LAEA. She was appointed to a two-year term. “I am excited to be working alongside incredible art educators throughout the state,” said Caffery. LAEA’s mission is to advance visual arts, design, and media arts education. LAEA is a division of the National Art Education Association.

At the November 2025 Louisiana Science Teachers Association (LSTA) conference, Dominican science teacher and robotics coach Crissy Giacona gave a presentation about a two-day rocket lab where students build and launch their own paper rockets. “With their rockets soaring over half of a football field, students will witness Newton’s third law in action – every action does have an equal and opposite reaction. It’s a fun, hands-on-way to bring physics to life and see just how far a little science, and a big jump can go.” In conjunction with the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Math, the conference drew an estimated 700 educators.

SAGE & St. Michael's Throughout the year, St. Michael Exploration Academy students visited campus to assist SAGE Dining Services with bagging chocolate chip cookies, a Dominican student favorite, and tidying the cafeteria after locker break. The Exploration Academy focuses on job training, providing job coaches, and partnering with local businesses for job placement. The objective is to assist students with their transition to employment/volunteer opportunities and independent living within their local communities. Dominican’s Food Service Director Gina Melita thanked Lisa Mansfield, Exploration Academy Faculty member at St. Michael’s, “for the great days we’ve been having with our St. Michael’s helpers! Today was especially sweet.”

he Lou Reilly Award is presented in memory of a wonderful Dominican graduate. For many years she served the community as an educator with a special love for athletics and student athletes. She saw athletic competition and sportsmanship as an important part of the Dominican High School spirit. The award recognizes the athlete who continually tries to improve her skills and listens to her coaches and teammates. This athlete encourages her teammates and gives her full effort at each moment. The student athletes themselves have a nominating vote in the selection of award recipients. The final decision is left to the discretion of the coaches.

SECOND HARVEST FOOD DRIVE

St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Food Drive, led by Dominican’s Campus Ministry Club, celebrated its 27th year of serving our community. Donations for Second Harvest filled 18 pallets with an incredible 83,182 items collected. That totaled 12,241 pounds of food — equating to 10,200 meals for those in need. A special congratulations to our Senior class who led the way with 29,788 items, followed closely by the Juniors with 27,506. Additional totals included: Freshmen – 11,980 8th Grade – 7,796 Sophomores – 4,847 Alumnae – 1,265

Involvement THANKSGIVING BASKETS

Community Dominican’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive was a beautiful display of our pillars—community and service—in action! This year, we collected enough food to fill 95 baskets, complete with all the fixings for hearty and delicious Thanksgiving meals that were delivered to our neighbors in the St. Rita Catholic Church parish. Food was collected by Dominican students through homerooms and clubs, with additional contributions from school personnel. Our Dominican alumnae added 30 baskets to the total, and St. Rita Church generously donated the turkeys. Dominican’s Dads Club members loaded their vehicles with the baskets and delivered them to St. Rita where Campus Ministry Club members assisted with the distribution to our neighbors in need.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY St. Mary’s Dominican High School students wrapped up the Christmas spirit for 163 individuals, including residents of Audubon Retirement Village, Metro Centers of Community Advocacy, and families in our surrounding community. “Each religion class was assigned to small groups that bought gifts. Faculty also donated to the gifting program and volunteered to purchase and wrap gifts,” said Campus Minister Rebecca Wallace with the school’s Dominican Catholic Identity Office. “This is the second year we had the opportunity to visit in person with residents at the Audubon Retirement Village. Our students loved it and were very impacted.”

KINDNESS WEEK Dominican’s Student Council hosted Treat People With Kindness Week, a tradition started by the 2020–2021 Executive Board. Throughout the week, students and personnel embraced small but meaningful ways to add kindness to their daily routines—sharing smiles, encouraging words, and thoughtful gestures whenever possible. During lunch, students stopped by to grab hand-made TPWK bracelets and uplifting messages from the “Take What You Need” display, spreading kindness one person at a time.

Classroom Experience and Beyond! Match Day at Dominican Match Day comes every March when medical students across the country learn their residency placements. For the fourth year, students in Mrs. Janine Koenig’s Bio II classes and Dr. Brian Credo’s PreMed classes at Archbishop Rummel High School participated in their Match Day. The two teachers followed a lesson plan adapted from the American Association of Medical Colleges’ lesson plans for high school students. Dominican students in Ms. Hailee Griffin’s and Mrs. Crissy Giacona’s Biology I classes translated and transcribed their way to making proteins… in bracelet form! Each student started with a DNA card, turned it into mRNA, decoded their amino acids, and finally revealed their “protein” — a secret word they turned into a colorful friendship bracelet.

Ms. Angelle Caffery’s Art III students paraded into the Mardi Gras season in the most creative way—by designing vibrant, 3D Mardi Gras flowers! Bursting with color and creativity, these festive works of art were the perfect way to celebrate Carnival.

Students in Mr. Kenny Lannes’ Introduction to Engineering course enjoyed some well-earned down time putting their popsicle-stick bridges to the ultimate test—failure! After lessons and written assessments on shear and bending moment diagrams, torque, and stress, students saw their designs in action. The experiment highlighted the importance of following procedures: when glue is applied correctly, it should be stronger than the wood—so the wood breaks before the joint gives way.

“We recreate a similar event here at Dominican,” said Mrs. Koenig. “Prior to the event, Dr. Credo comes to school and talks to our students about the impact of faith in practicing medicine, and the current requirements to enter medical school. My students have an assignment to investigate residency programs which requires them to pick a specialty and hospital program. Along with Dr. Credo’s class, we open envelopes all at the same time in a ceremony here in the Tech Center. Then each student must interact with at least three others from Rummel to find out their specialty and residency program.”

Mr. Mark Gonnella’s AP Psychology classes 'went on down to the Audubon Zoo' for an educational field trip to explore behavioral conditioning through real-world applications in animal training and husbandry. This immersive experience allowed students to connect classroom theory to observable behavior in a professional setting, aided by the guidance of an experienced zookeeper who specializes in primates.

LSU Coastal Roots

Heart Health Month Dominican teacher Mrs. Joann Haydel covers a unit on Louisiana Wetlands with her Earth Science classes. On the first day of spring, her classes planted bald cypress seeds that will germinate in the LSU Coastal Roots plant nursery built on campus in the spring of 2023. “We do a unit on Louisiana Wetlands and the LSU Coastal Roots program is a great way to engage students to actively be stewards of their environment,” she said. “This is our fourth year to participate in the program. A grant from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation Service Learning Program funds our participation.” Dominican’s planting site partner is the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway where in December 2025 Mrs. Haydel’s students took a restoration planting trip and planted 500 bald cypress tree saplings.

“They learned about the role of the spillway and the importance of planting trees there to increase habitat. Through the summer we will watch these seeds grow and hope to have plenty of seedlings for next year’s Earth Science classes to plant in the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway in the Fall. Then the cycle will start over, planting new seeds in the spring.” -Mrs. Joann Haydel

Mrs. Amy Ferguson's Law Studies class welcomed guest speaker Mr. Richard Dykes, retired Lieutenant with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Mr. Dykes’ career spanned 23 years in law enforcement, serving in many capacities including Corrections, Traffic, and the Special Investigations Bureau. In his talk, Mr. Dykes covered the criminal justice process that includes arrests, the court process, conviction, and post-conviction. He shared personal accounts of situations on the job and discussed an array of career opportunities available in law enforcement.

In March, representatives from the New Orleans Saints, Ochsner Health, and the American Heart Association visited Dominican to teach students lifesaving CPR techniques. In honor of Heart Health Month, we were grateful to have these organizations share their knowledge and help raise awareness about the importance of heart health and emergency preparedness. Thank you for empowering our students with skills that can truly save lives. And thank you to special guest Juwan Johnson for learning alongside our juniors!

Students in Mrs. Crissy Giacona’s Biology I Honors classes completed a lab titled “Homer-ostasis,” a playful twist on homeostasis featuring Homer Simpson! Students worked to keep a cup (with a hole in it) stable by juggling the amount of liquid, the temperature, and the yellow color as water leaked out. The students had to think fast and react faster to keep everything in the “normal range.” The result was a fast-paced, laughterfilled activity that showed just how tricky (and exciting) maintaining balance can be!

The Dominican Robotics Team won the REACH Award at the FIRST Tech Challenge Hammond Qualifier! The REACH Award recognizes teams who exemplify gracious professionalism, teamwork, creativity, innovation, and a strong commitment to the engineering design process—all while living out the FIRST core values both on and off the competition field. At the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier at Dunham High School, the Dominican Ultraviolet Robotics Team earned the competition’s highest honor — the 1st Place INSPIRE Award! The INSPIRE Award recognizes a team that exemplifies growth, sustainability, teamwork, and excellence in engineering. Ultraviolet impressed judges with their intentional iteration, innovative robot design, and commitment to continuous improvement. As proud “First Like a Girl” ambassadors, they continue to champion girls in robotics and women in STEM— leading by both action and example!

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY NAHS students Brianna Teran, Leah Johnson, and Xuan Hoang competed in the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundations' Annual Chalk Drawing contest in City Park. The students created a 10-foot by 10-foot square chalk mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe and orange marigolds to represent the country of Mexico. The NAHS students received a 2nd place prize for their work.

ECOLOGICAL FIELDTRIPS

Members of Dominican’s Ecology & Stewardship Club and the National Science Honor Society planted Spartina alterniflora and Spartina patens along the shoreline of Bucktown Marina as part of the MLODS (Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy) — a vital effort to protect local communities from storm surge. This shoreline restoration project is a collaboration with Glass Half Full, Coastal Protection Restoration Authority, Jefferson Parish, and the Pontchartrain Conservancy. Last year, our students helped the Pontchartrain Conservancy place burlap bags of recycled glass sand from Glass Half Full on the rocky shoreline, and this year, they were thrilled to return to plant native marsh grasses. The Ecology and Stewardship Club took learning beyond the classroom on their spring field trip to the University of New Orleans Coastal Education Research Facility, adjacent to the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. The site provided students with a firsthand look at Louisiana’s unique coastal wetlands.

The Dominican Robotics Team welcomed 16 Girl Scouts for an hour-long visit to the Robotics Lab. During their visit, the Girl Scouts programmed robots and took turns driving the FIRST Tech Challenge – FTC robot. They also learned about FTC from Dominican’s Robotics team members. After completing their time with the Dominican Robotics team, the Girls Scouts completed their requirements for their Robotics badge which will be given at their next Girl Scouts meeting.

PRO LIFE CLUB BABY SUPPLY DRIVE

Dominican students came together for a Baby Supply Drive hosted by the Pro-Life Club, collecting essential items to support families in need through Access Pregnancy Center with Catholic Charities. Thanks to their compassion and commitment, more than 7,000 diapers, 243 packs of wipes, 13 car seats, 22 baby gates, 3 strollers, and many other necessities were donated.

STUDENT COUNCIL & HAPPY FEET

Students explored the marshes on guided canoe trips and collected a variety of samples to better understand the wetland ecosystem. Mrs. Joann Haydel, moderator of the Ecology and Stewardship Club, shared, “It was a beautiful day to learn about our marsh ecosystems and get the girls outside to explore.”

Student Council hosted a sock drive benefiting Happy Feet, spearheaded by junior Lourdes Maristany. Dominican collected 916 pairs of socks. Happy Feet spans multiple schools across New Orleans, and together 9 local schools collected over 10,000 pairs of socks, all donated to Ozanam Inn to support those in need.

DominiCamp · Jumpin' for Joy From softball and cheerleading, to arts and crafts and conducting experiments, campers at DominiCamp and Jumpin' for Joy channeled their creativity in a variety of activities, including the arts, sports, dance, music, and science.

Walkin' on Walmsley Incoming students enjoyed Walkin’ on Walmsley, an exciting week of orientation where they met faculty and fellow students, made new friends, and had fun as they discovered their new school. Lunch, locating lockers, reading and math time, a service project, enjoying Italian ice treats, and a Friendship Talk led by the Counseling Department were some of the many activities that packed their week. Trivia, snoballs, and a photo booth were some of the last day events.

There will be no out of pocket fees for the organizers. Dominican's 64th Alumnae Homecoming St. Mary’s Dominican High School alumnae returned to their alma mater for the 64th Homecoming Mass and Luncheon on Saturday, April 11th to celebrate class anniversaries and recognize the 2026 Alumna of the Year Sally Ann Russo, Class of 2004. The honoree was saluted for offering her time, talents, and leadership wherever they are needed. Homecoming recognition of milestone anniversaries were the Class of 1976 that marked its 50th anniversary and the Class of 2001 that observed its 25th anniversary. Other saluted class years were 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. Alumnae Lee Pittman ’51 was recognized as the wisest and Lauren Guidroz ’15 was the youngest alum present.

These qualities have helped Sally guide leaders in the organization through the most sensitive of challenges, particularly in her roles leading employee relations and compliance. Alumnae Director Addresses Newest Alumnae

As the class of 2026 prepared to leave the learning campus of Dominican, Celeste Shelsey Anding ’82, Alumnae Director addressed the class and prepared them to join over 12,000 as they become Dominican Alumnae. “At the Senior retreat, I was honored to be able to speak to the class of 2026, our newest Alumnae! So proud of these young ladies as we welcome them to our Dominican Legacy.” Dominican proudly celebrated 198 alumnae working in Catholic schools across 48 different campuses, spanning from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to Austin, Texas, and the greater New Orleans area to St. Charles Parish. Special thanks to the 15 alumnae on “delivery duty,” who helped personally deliver gifts—including one to the Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. “Each gift was a true Dominican collaboration,” said Celeste Shelsey Anding ’82, Dominican’s Alumnae Director. “The Dominican alumnae pouch was designed and made by an alum and the lip balm gift also was locally crafted and made by an alum. The Dominican keychain was designed and created by the Dominican robotics student team.”

Academic Honor Day

National Catholic Sisters Week Honoring the Dominican Sisters and all women religious during National Catholic Sisters Week, St. Mary’s Dominican High School Alumnae served meals to 75 residents at Covenant House in New Orleans. Ten Dominican Alumnae donated food for the Italian dinner. Since 2019, the Alumnae Association of St. Mary’s Dominican High School has provided meals at Covenant House in honor of National Catholic Sisters Week.

At Academic Honor Day, the Class of 2026 was welcomed into the Dominican Alumnae Association. Alumnae presented the seniors with a Dominican rosary, designed by Rebecca “Becky” Bellows Crawford ’86 and handmade by Peggy Delarosa ’69.

Alumnae Happenings Throwback Thursday Alumnae laced up their saddle oxfords and stepped back in time for a Throwback Thursday celebration! Dressed in their most spirited Dominican attire, they gathered with classmates to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the memories that made their Dominican experience so special. From laughter-filled stories to cherished traditions, it was a joyful reminder of where those saddle oxfords have taken us—and the lifelong bonds that continue to carry us forward.

AlumnaeBots At the Dominican Alumnae Bots event, hosted by Dominican's Alumnae Association and Robotics Team #9636, Dominican alumnae, including those who brought their daughters, enjoyed a fun-filled and informative time in the robotics lab where they explored 3D printing, CAD designs, watched an EV3 robot dance, saw a live laser-cutting demonstration, and took turns driving a competition FIRST Tech Challenge robot. The guests also checked out the Robotics team's award-winning portfolio and talked with team members about their competitions.

Alumnae Happy Hour Our first-ever Dominican Alumnae Happy Hour at Stained Glass Wine House—proudly owned by Jessica Marasco Illes ’00—was a wonderful success. Dominican alumnae from the Classes of 1970–2022 packed the charming wine bar in the historic district of Gretna for an evening of laughter, memories, and sisterhood.

DR. AMY MONTZ, CLASS OF 1994 B

orn in New Orleans, adopted by New Orleans Catholics, Amy was educated by the Dominican Sisters during a significant portion of her formative teenage years. She has fond memories of those Dominican years. Her dad loved to share the story when he met Sr. Savio Estorge on the first parent-teacher night. She asked who his daughter was. When he said Amy Montz, Sister replied, “You poor man!” Amy shared, “I was quite the talker. Sister had to move me around the classroom, finally figuring out I’d talk to whomever I sat next to! We kept in touch and worked together when I taught at Dominican in the early 2000s.” Amy continued experimenting with creative writing throughout high school, college, and graduate school, mostly poetry and short stories. “My interests in reading and writing aligned then and now, so when I wrote the first draft of my novel Becoming in 2003, I was not surprised to see that it had a decidedly science fiction leaning.” Professor of English at the University of Southern Indiana, Amy’s specialized experience includes 18th and 19th century British literature, fashion, young adult literature, Gothic literature, Victorian Culture and Women’s rights. Last June she was awarded a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Award to conduct research in Manchester, United Kingdom, focusing on the nineteenth-century author Elizabeth Gaskell during the 2025-2026 academic year. The Fulbright took Amy to her favorite city in the United Kingdom, Manchester where she researched Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. Standing in London’s St. Pancras Station for the first time, she marveled at how Victorian it all was. “This, I realized, was where my beloved Victorians had

walked, shopped, caught the train, loved, and lived. This connection between dusty history and the people who lived it is instrumental to my personal and professional philosophy of teaching, reading, and writing. As a professor, I strive to make the nineteenth century alive for my students. I am a feminist new historicist critic, which means that my work looks at how literature is influenced by history and culture. I am most interested in the idea of the domestic every day, how seemingly insignificant items – dresses, recipes, shawls – and seemingly insignificant people – girls, governesses, fashionable women – can shape a nation and change an empire.” The Fulbright scholar combined her creative and academic writings into one monograph –Two Lived Lives: An Autobiographical Survey of Elizabeth Gaskell and Her Works. It is an examination of Gaskell’s novels, short stories, letters, papers, Victorian textiles, fashion and how the concerns of the twenty-first century echo the same concerns of inequality of wealth, women’s rights, and industrialization that Gaskell wrote about in the 1850s and 1860s. The proposed book will be complemented by an examination of current-day responses to Gaskell, such as the BBC’s productions of North and South and Cranford. During her six-month residency, Amy was affiliated with the University of Manchester and worked in the renowned John Rylands Library that houses the Elizabeth Gaskell Collection. Amy’s research delved into Gaskell’s novels and personal archives, with particular emphasis on gender, class, and nationalism. Amy also engaged graduate and undergraduate students with guest lectures and mentoring and collaborated with the Elizabeth Gaskell House, a preserved historic site that was Gaskell’s home in Manchester. Amy’s latest book is Dressing for England: Fashion and Nationalism in Victorian Novels (SUNY Press). The book started out as her dissertation in 2006. It notes that women’s interest in fashionable clothing was viewed in two ways in nineteenthcentury England as a superficial feminine habit, on the one hand, and on the other, as a dangerous tool women used to control how they were perceived. Dress could be a means of not only conveying extravagance or beauty but also influencing society into an arena of feminine power. Reading wellknown novels by Gaskell, Thackeray, and Eliot, alongside clothing and cultural ephemera, Dressing for England shows how evolving fashions – shawls, crinolines, turbans, corsets, hats – reflected shifting notions of class, gender, and Empire and enabled women to shape both their own identities.

THERESA WARK HUETE ’62 A LIFE INTERWOVEN WITH DOMINICAN JANUARY 6, 1944 – APRIL 13, 2026

ll things Dominican were woven deeply into Theresa Wark Huete’s life and heart. For Theresa, Dominican was more than a school or a tradition. It was a living bond of faith, love, and belonging that connected the women of her family across more than a century. That bond began with her grandmother, Cecilia Gilmartin Wark, Class of 1897, continued through her mother, Margaret C. Wark, Class of 1930, and was carried on by Theresa, Class of 1962, her daughter Ann H. Glazner, Class of 1983, and her granddaughter Emily Glazner, Class of 2023. To be part of a five-generation Dominican family is a unique and extraordinary legacy, and Theresa treasured it with deep gratitude and pride.

Theresa’s lifelong connection to Dominican began at St. Anthony of Padua Elementary School in New Orleans, taught by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Their example of faith, discipline, and service helped shape the woman she became. She later graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School in 1962 and attended St. Mary’s Dominican College. One of the most meaningful moments in her later years came at Dominican’s 2023 Ring Ceremony, when five generations of her family’s Dominican heritage were represented in a single, unforgettable moment. Theresa was wearing her grandmother’s 1897 class pin and her own 1962 ring, Ann was wearing her grandmother’s 1930 ring, and Emily was wearing her mother’s 1983 ring with her 2023 year added, when they carried the rings for the Class of 2023, a visible symbol of continuity, devotion, and family love. It was a moment of joy and remembrance that beautifully reflected Theresa’s place at the center of a legacy she held dear.

to her DHS Class of 1962, creating an online group and publishing a monthly newsletter so friendships, memories, and milestones would continue to be shared. Theresa loved to travel abroad, especially to Ireland, a place rich with her family and DHS history. With care and determination, she researched and compiled historical newspaper clippings into a binder titled The Birth of a Legacy: Dominican – The Early Years 1861-1912, preserving a history she believed should never be forgotten. An avid historian and gifted genealogist, Theresa was also the published author of Memories of Ella – A Story of Life, Love, and Loss. Inspired by her great-aunt Mary Ellen, known as Ella, the book reflected Theresa’s deep longing to understand the lives of those who came before her and to honor them with tenderness, care, and truth. When Memories of Ella was published in 2016, Theresa wrote that telling Ella’s story had transformed her ancestors from names on census records and tombstones into real people whose love, loss, courage, and sorrow could still be felt. Those words now speak powerfully of the legacy Theresa leaves behind. Through the family history she preserved, the Dominican traditions she cherished, and the love she poured into family and friends, she gave others the gift of connection; and, because of her care, the stories she treasured will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her and in generations still to come.

The Dominican Peace Center New Orleans is a community center that provides a range of services to neighbors of the Gert Town area: • After School Program for youth (homework assistance, tutoring, mentoring, and organized play) • Case Management Services • Computer classes and daily computer assistance • Emergency Assistance provided once per year (rent, utilities, funeral expenses) through our People Helping People Fund (donations are happily needed and accepted) • Employment Program (skills building, job assistance, and resumes) • Mental Health Services for youth provided by a play therapist twice a week • Senior Program (bingo, monthly luncheons with speakers, exercise classes, field trips, and hurricane preparedness). The Dominican Alumnae support our neighborhood through the Dominican Peace Center.

CLASS COMPOSITES In an effort to preserve and document our heritage, the Alumnae Office is asking for donations to complete the Legacy Wall of all class composites. We are creating composites for the missing classes from 1927-1970. The cost is $1000 for each class composite to be produced, printed, and framed. ALUMNAE MENTORING PROJECT

In its 165-year history, St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s graduates are among New Orleans’ most successful women. Dominican currently has more than 13,000 alumnae ranging from 18-102 years old. The knowledge base in the alumnae corps is vast, rich and diverse. The incredible spectrum of experience and abilities of our alumnae provide an untapped wealth of knowledge to share with our students. The Alumnae Mentoring Project connects alumnae with aspiring students who have an interest or a declared focus in an area of study or profession. This connection provides real life examples and touchpoints for the student’s development. Our goal is to create a framework that has a positive impact on our students’ professional and spiritual formation. Dominican’s National Science Honor Society members had the opportunity to learn from two inspiring alumnae during a lunchtime meeting! Chloe Townsend '20 and Gracie Mae Manthey '20 returned to campus to share insights on their journeys after Dominican, offering a glimpse into college life and their experiences as first-year students at LSU Vet School.

Aviation was the subject for students in Mrs. Crissy Giacona’s Physical Science Honors classes with guest speaker Shelley Mateu ’92, Assistant Chief Pilot with Southwest Airlines in Austin, Texas. Shelley shared with the students the impact of her Dominican education, her career trajectory, and aviation with discussion of Bernoulli’s principle of flight, identifying parts of a plane and its functions, and how the weather affects flight. In the classroom the students experience flight thanks to a flight simulator, computer, and monitor that were gifted by donors. Mrs. Giacona noted, “The students truly benefit from seeing women represented in STEM fields. It’s important for them to recognize that women can pursue and succeed in any career, especially those that may seem challenging. It was inspiring for my students to hear the stories and insights shared by Captain Shelley. Her enthusiasm for flying has already made a meaningful impact. Since her visit, several of the students have shown increased interest in using the flight simulator. Initially, some were hesitant to try it because it can feel intimidating, but experiences like this help build confidence. The more we expose students to challenging opportunities and normalize stepping outside of their comfort zones, the more confident and capable they become. Introducing them to new career paths opens doors they may not have previously considered.”

Dominican students in Mrs. Janine Koenig’s Biology II and Biology II Honors classes participated in a GeneBIORETS student workshop at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. During their visit, students explored the anatomy simulation lab, conducted a forensic science experiment, and examined both healthy and diseased human organs—bringing their classroom learning to life through hands-on experiences. It was especially meaningful to see familiar faces throughout the day. Dominican alumnae Madison Ferguson ’21, Alli Chauvin ’19, and Aria Dody ’21—current LSUHSC students— assisted with the tour and experiments. Aria Dody, a graduate student pursuing her Master’s in Public Health and Assistant Coordinator in the Department of Genetics, Office of Student Affairs, helped coordinate the field trip. Alli Chauvin, recently accepted to medical school for fall 2026, and Madison Ferguson, who is completing her first year of medical school, also generously gave their time to support our students.

Guest speaker Katie Dardis Singleton ’01 spoke with senior English classes about Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book “Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminine Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions,” and offered a Catholic perspective on feminism. Singleton, a graduate of Catholic University, earned a Licentiate in Bioethics from the Regina Apostolorum in Rome. Her interests include bioethics, John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, and discussing the spirituality of motherhood and marriage.

Dominican’s Spanish Club celebrated the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month with an invitation to students, faculty, and personnel to join club members at first and second lunch for food, fun, and dancing in the SARG. After a dance lesson by Dominican alumna Bianca San Martin ’08, everyone followed her lead for a memorable time. Hope Quigley ’17, Senior Marketing Coordinator at Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel, gives Hailey Huston ’28 a tour of the hotel as she shadows Hope for a future in Hotel Marketing. Hope started at the Hilton in 2021 as Event Services Manager with the recommendation of another Dominican Alumna. This is why the Dominican Mentorship Program is such a success for our alumnae!

All About Alumnae 1961 Painting by Cornelia “Dee” Fuller Cichon has finally been returned home, thanks to Alumnae Director Celeste Shelsey Anding ’82 who researched the history of the artist. Cornelia gifted the painting to Sr. Delia McDonald, OP and it remained with the Dominican Sisters until it was discovered during their 2025 move. Dee never signed her artwork, with the exception of the sunflower art, thanks to her mother’s insistence. Thru the assistance of social media, this traveling artwork found its way back home to Dee’s husband, Mr. Cichon, in Bay St. Louis. 1967

Shirley Duvigneaud Bowler was presented with the 2025 Community Service Award from the Federation of Insurance Women of Texas, of which she has been a member since 2017. 1970 Dawn DeDeaux showcased her artwork this year at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale in Venice, Italy. It is one of the most prestigious art exhibitions in the world. This rare invitation highlights the growing global recognition of New Orleans’ vibrant contemporary arts scene. Dawn will also be featured at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece presented by Artist Residency Center Athens. 1972

Susan Wetzel Bradle handmade new graduation banners that were used May 2026 for the very first time. The first set of banners were hand made in the early 90’s by Debbie Mouney Broussard ’69.

Karla Luke is Executive Director of the Office of Catholic Education in the Catholic Diocese of Jackson Catholic School System. They received a System of Distinction Award from Cognia reflecting years of faithful leadership by Karla. 1979 Nelita Manego Ramey has released her new book, “Our Power – The Anthology: Melanated Queens Rising Beyond Disabilities.” The book is a powerful and inspiring collection of stories showcasing the resilience, strength, and triumph of extraordinary black women who have defied the odds. 1986 Lorraine Melito Hess has released her first book, “After the Miracle.” It is a collection of five fiction short stories about the after story of five miracles of the Bible. Jessica Dwyer was named Favorite Principal at St. Francis Xavier that was also named favorite private elementary and middle school for 2025. Missy Bagnetto Rogers is President and Founder of Noble Plastics. Missy also serves as chair of the board of directors of the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. She is a member of Louisiana State University’s Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Board of Advisors, Mechanical Engineering Industry Council, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, College of Engineering, Dean’s Advisory Council. Missy received her BS in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Louisiana. 1987 Karen Rush Webb is a newly appointed member of the Dominican Peace Center Board.

1989 Jennifer Avegno, MD, Director of New Orleans Health Department, is the recipient of the Public Health Trailblazer Award for 2025, presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The award recognizes emergency medicine professionals who have made significant advances in public health care and injury prevention in their community and nationally. 1990 Amy Coney Barrett has released her new book – “Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and the Constitution.” The book gives an overview of the Supreme Court’s inner workings, her approach to the Constitution and the daily life managing seven children while serving on the bench. Pilar Ramos has recently been appointed as Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer at Starbucks Corporation. 1992 Shelley Mateu has been promoted to Assistant Chief Pilot of Southwest Airlines in Austin. Shelley is also a regular guest speaker at Dominican for Robotics and Engineering classes. Kelly McCarthy Rabalais is Chief Strategy Officer at St. Tammany Health System where she leads strategy and communications initiatives. 1994 Danielle Broussard Romeguera joined three physicians on a presentation to the US Senate Congressional Panel about the importance of vaccines as she shared her personal story on the loss of her daughter at 52 days old, due to vaccine preventable illness. Keryl Cryer has a new position working in development communications for Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth in Baltimore. She shared, “I produce and elevate written and visual communications to help the CTY Development Team engage donors and CTY alumni. For example, I publish

an email newsletter three times a year, produce their 20-page Giving & Gratitude annual report for donors, and support engagement events.” 1995 Collette Marie Barbera has donated her Dominican class ring to continue the Dominican legacy. 2001 Trisha Fos, a third-grade instructor at the LSU Laboratory School, was named a state finalist for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This award is the nation's highest honor for K-12 STEM teachers. 2003 Jenn Amato Greff along with her husband and family of four girls and one boy were recently featured on the cover of River Ridge Living Magazine. 2005 Robin Barnes has just released her debut album, "Louisiana Love," and is touring internationally until the end of 2026! 2008 Brianna Becnel Nelson is the new Principal at St. Matthew The Apostle School in River Ridge. 2009 Laura Aleman Kirkikis is founder of PowHer and mom of three. Her passion for movement, health, and helping others led her to become a certified personal trainer and running coach. Over the past 10 years, she has trained clients of all backgrounds and coached high school cross country, including Dominican. “I believe fitness should be empowering, inclusive, and sustainable — especially for moms. My mission is to create a supportive space where moms can move with purpose, build confidence, and 'Reclaim Their Her' — because you deserve to show up for yourself.” 2011 The Today Show gave Taylor Lee and Taylor Lambert a makeover to celebrate Galentine's Day. On the show, they shared how they met at Dominican with their lunch group of 18 girls. They celebrate Galentine's Day to reconnect and celebrate their friendship.

Dr. Taylor Reuther was inducted into the 4th Annual Xavier University (XU) of Louisiana Athletic Hall of Fame. Taylor played from 2011-2013 and then returned for the 2015 season while studying for a pharmaceutical degree. She was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, NAIA All- American and remains the only Academic All-American in the program’s history. She holds school records for kills, aces and digs and helped the Gold Nuggets earn four consecutive conference titles and national tournaments appearances. Taylor is the first volleyball player in XU history to receive this high honor. 2013 Maddie Kelly is the G.R.A.C.E. Program Director at Archbishop Hannan High School. G.R.A.C.E. Stands for Grow, Rise, Achieve through Catholic Education, an inclusive, faith-centered special education program for diverse learners and students with exceptionalities. 2014 Renee Gros has just released her debut album called, “Glad I’m Wrong.” 2016 Logan Gobert opened Matcha Magic on Tulane Ave!

2020 Jordyn Brown was the recipient of New Teacher Award at Bluff Middle School where she has been teaching 7th grade Math. This year, she will begin teaching 8th grade Math. Bluff Middle School is in Prairieville and maintains high performance on state tests with very strong Math and Reading proficiency scores! Gloria Thomas was volunteer chair for Sideline Pass Toy Drive 2025. 2022

Catherine Mansfield was only the fourth female in history of LSU to be Louisiana State University Band Drum Major. She recently graduated from LSU with a BA in Art History; Business administration, Italian and Honors Research minors. 2023 Charlotte Raymond, a junior majoring in Earth, Environmental and Planetary sciences at Rice University, is using Antarctic algae to explore how tiny organisms influence the global carbon cycle and what that can tell us about climate change.
