From the Principal Thank you so much to all of you. I am very excited about and encouraged by your generosity and commitment to St Mary’s future. Last year brought a number of delightful surprises. As well as the many gifts to Annual Giving, two parents wished to acknowledge the work of the Learning Support Team in the Senior School and the impact the teachers and education assistants had on their daughter’s growth and development. Another parent was interested in providing funds to help our students link with China in particular. This too was inspired by last year’s student tour to China with Reverend Gerry and Mr Chidgzey. Another donor donated to provide additional ongoing scholarships to our girls who are studying medicine. An incredibly generous amount was provided. When people are given the opportunity to donate, amazing things do happen. These are just some of the examples that produced great excitement for the Foundation, Linzey Allinson, who has co-ordinated the campaign and me.
I hope that everyone who attended the Donor Thank you High Tea enjoyed the afternoon. My goodness - the Elizabeth Myles Library looked absolutely splendid, with beautiful flowers and a sumptuous afternoon tea making for a special occasion. It was wonderful to hear from Ella Tchomarian (‘06) who spoke about how a scholarship from St Mary’s made a difference to her family and her at a crucial time in her life when her father became unexpectedly very ill. It is a heartwarming story and one that confirms again the importance of being able to support students when tragic circumstances arise.
From the Chair of the St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School Foundation In the years I have been involved with the Foundation I have been overwhelmed time and time again by the generosity of our school community and the commitment and support for the school shown in so many different ways. 2014 was no exception. We are delighted to share with you that 2014 Annual Giving, the first appeal of its kind for almost a decade, raised over $115, 000. This will help us to build our Scholarship Fund to provide places for students whose families’ financial circumstances prevent them from attending St Mary’s, to preserve our precious Archives collection in the Archives Heritage Centre and to encourage reading through the establishment of an e-Library.
Again, a huge thank you to you all for St Mary’s also received another $225,000 in supporting us in 2014. The Scholarship Fund - Every Opportunity Your support for the St Mary’s Scholarship Fund has been inspiring with over $71,000 of 2014 Annual Giving donations being directed to this fund, as well as other significant donations during the year. It is our aim to be in a position to offer two substantial scholarships to Senior School girls in 2016. Your gift takes us another step closer to being able to offer needs-based scholarships to girls who would flourish at St Mary’s but who would not be able to attend for financial reasons. Thank you for your generosity and vision in supporting young women in the future to unleash their potential.
Golden Days When I was in Year 8 my dad passed away, but with the financial support provided by the school, I was able to continue my education at St Mary’s. My mother used to say that school days are golden days and she was right. I am forever grateful for the eleven years I spent at St Mary’s when I was encouraged to give everything a go and to nurture my potential. Whilst my athletics career hit its straps post-school, St Mary’s supported my athletic endeavours in their infancy. After leaving St Mary’s I combined my university studies with pursuing my athletics career at the highest level. I am so proud to have represented my country in this way. In recent years I have been working in sports administration as well as raising my three children. I am involved in the running of Little Athletics, coaching athletes, and running camps and competitions and identifying talent in young WA athletes. The well-rounded education I received means in my post-athletics days, I feel I have so many avenues that I can pursue. I have such amazing memories and experiences from St Mary’s that will stay with me forever and all of which have changed my life in a positive way. Memories like playing with the school band at the Sydney Opera House, immersing myself in Japanese culture on the Japan trip and receiving public speaking guidance from the Drama teacher to help prepare for my role as Head Girl, have all made their mark. E-Read All About It There was a great buzz of excitement early in Term 1 when students in the Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 book clubs and other senior classes met on different occasions to find out how to use the new e-library. Even more exciting was the opportunity for the girls to help Senior School Librarian, Mrs Pengelley, select the books which will be available for borrowing. Thanks to you, the e-library is already offering over 400 fiction and non-fiction titles for the Senior girls to choose from. Ten e-readers have also been purchased and are available for those students who do not have their own.
I take out a ridiculous number of books from the Library and they get so heavy – the e-library is going to make a real difference. E-books have in-built dictionaries and you can’t lose the page you were on! I will definitely be using the new e-library. Meghann, Year 10
E-books are so accessible and make it really easy for me to read. Thank you for this opportunity which is allowing us to experience a unique way of reading and encouraging me to read more.
In the Junior School, e-books are also being selected for the Theresa and Allan Macdonald library by Mrs Letch, ready for students to access in Term 2. Some Year 4 classes have already been using e-books, linked to the curriculum, for research during lessons.

Preserving Our History As we go to press, building work on the Heritage Centre, which will house our Archives, has almost been completed and Archivist, Stephanie Neille, is preparing for the ‘big move’. Thanks to you, the building will provide extensive storage solutions for the precious and diverse items held in the collection. Over 300 metres of shelving has been installed in the two climate controlled repositories. Year 3 students will be among the first to use the new Heritage Room when they visit the Archives as part of their Perth: Then and Now programme in Term 2. Year 3s will also be marking the retirement of Deputy Principal, Joan Karmelita, when they interview her about St Mary’s then and now. As well as preserving the history of our school, the Archives also holds other items of historical significance. These include the war-time albums of our founder, Bishop CL Riley, who was stationed across
North Africa and the Middle East during WWI and again in WWII. The Heritage Centre will be named in honour of Old Girl, Marlene Carter (’63). Marlene has been a generous and devoted supporter of St Mary’s for many years, serving as President of the Old Girls’ Association from 1988-1998 and as a member of the Board of Management of the Foundation since 1989. Marlene is also a Trustee of the Foundation and Chair of the Bishop Riley Bequest Society and has been a keen supporter of the Archives, volunteering in a number of capacities over the years. The official opening of the Heritage Centre will take place in August 2015 and we look forward to welcoming donors to the Archives Heritage Centre for this event.

Boarders’ home away from home Bequests: A Gift of a Lifetime Members of the Bishop Riley Bequest Society met for the annual Society Dinner, hosted by Principal, Mrs Thomson, and Chairman of the Foundation, Ron Farris, in November last year in the Elizabeth Myles Library.
A $1million contribution by the Foundation has helped to extend the boarding house. In February we welcomed an additional 20 girls to our boarding family. As well as extra accommodation, the ground floor of the extension offers girls recreational space for arts, crafts and cooking and there is also a small classroom for tutoring and quiet study in the evening.
Society members and their guests heard from Dr Emma Dudman (’01) who benefitted from the generosity of a bequest to St Mary’s. In 2005 Emma was a recipient of the Esmee Byatt Scholarship in Medicine, an award which was made possible through the generous bequest of Esmee Byatt Making a Differe nce (Templeton ’30). Class of 2014 Gift Thank you to the Class of 2014 and their families for their generous Class Gift. In recognition of your support, a vine row at the St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School Foundation’s St Mary’s at Metricup vineyard will be named ‘Class of 2014’. Since 2008, the Year 12 graduating class has left a lasting legacy of their time spent together at St Mary’s by naming a vine row. Your gift will help to build the Scholarship Fund so that we may offer places to students whose families do not have the means for them to attend St Mary’s. We look forward to providing members of the Class of 2014 with a bottle of Frankie’s Folly wine in 2018.
