WELCOME
In this, our 300th anniversary year, I am incredibly proud of how our musical programme has grown.
In recent years, St Martin-in-the-Fields has become a true London home for world-class ensembles and a place where new music comes to life. Our autumn and winter season reflects this spirit: it is imaginative, inclusive, and deeply rooted in our history of music-making.
To celebrate this milestone, we are hosting a spectacular season featuring distinguished ensembles including Tenebrae, The Carice Singers and SANSARA. From London Voices and La Serenissima to a landmark collaboration between the BBC Singers and Britten Sinfonia, our 300th year honours
three centuries of musical heritage. We are also delighted to welcome the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras back to their London home and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, our principal orchestral partner, alongside a festive season featuring The Sixteen, Ex Cathedra, and our beloved By Candlelight carol concerts. 2027 also sees the return of the five-star, sold-out production Death of Gesualdo

Spain’s Siglo de Oro, the Age of Gold, gave rise to some of the greatest sacred choral music of the Renaissance. The Sixteen and Harry Christophers devote their latest Choral Pilgrimage to pieces by two outstanding Spanish composers. They explore majestic works by Cristóbal de Morales, and the exquisite polyphony of Sebastián de Vivánco. Their programme also features spellbinding settings of words by Saint John Henry Newman: Sir James MacMillan’s Nothing in Vain for soloists and double choir and the world premiere of Kerensa Briggs’ Lead, Kindly Light, specially commissioned for the Choral Pilgrimage.

Halo meets Howells and BioShock Infinite encounters Arvo Pärt, as London Voices explores the fantastic world where choral music meets video gaming. Civilisations rise and fall, a lonely robot tends a lush new planet, and a princess of Hyrule strives to bring harmony. The universe of computer gaming has always gone hand-in-hand with choral music – with games like So Let Us Melt, Portal and Abzû inspiring some of the most original sounds of our time. Now Jessica Curry and Ben Parry have created a sequence of choral music from great games, paired with the classics – by Pärt, Howells, Vaughan Williams and more – that influenced them. These beloved scores have never sounded more vibrant.

Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet: on the eve of World Homeless Day, SANSARA performs Gavin Bryars’s ultimate outsider classic. It starts on the streets of London, with a homeless man singing quietly to himself. It becomes…well, there isn’t really any way to describe what you’ll think or feel next, as Gavin Bryars weaves that broken scrap of human feeling into a sonic experience unlike anything else in modern music. There’s nothing quite like Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, and no more fitting venue than the central London church that puts homeless people at the heart of its mission. SANSARA gives the UK premiere of Bryars’s new choral version. Pulitzer prize-winning American composer David Lang writes: ‘Many religions profess that an important part of their belief is to care about how people who are comfortable should act towards people who are not … I live in New York, which has homeless people who need help all the time … the point of Poor Hymnal is, What would it be like to actually pay attention to the people who are around you?’

In 1726, King George II was on the throne, Voltaire sought asylum in Britain and Handel’s Alessandro was rocking the London stage. And in a part of London that wasn’t yet known as Trafalgar Square, a church was completed that would become the living heart of the capital’s spiritual and musical life. An evening like this comes only once every three centuries. Tonight, St Martin-inthe-Fields’ own professional choir comes together with the orchestra that took its name from the church plus established and emerging stars of 21st century music – Danielle de Niese and Aaron Azunda Akugbo – for a pageant of music celebrating the 300th anniversary of the nation’s parish church.

Opera barely existed when Claudio Monteverdi composed L’Orfeo in 1607, and you can still sense the excitement, the freshness and the raw inspiration of an artform that was inventing itself on the hoof.
