HELP REQUIRED During our summer services, Rev Andy Chris1e, David Yacamini and myself will cover for Diane’s holidays. You will see from the Worship Calendar that on Sundays 13 and 20 July I will lead worship and I propose to talk about your favourite hymns and readings. I can only do that successfully with your help so please let me have a note of your favourite hymn or reading and the reasons for that. I can’t guarantee using every sugges1on but I will do my best. Le0er from the Manse We do hope you all had an enjoyable 1me over the Easter break. We spent a very ac1ve and wonderful 1me with our grandson Isaac, just before Holy Week. It was a 1me of laughter, sleep and seeing the wonder of the world through the eyes of a 2 year old. What amazing things a li le child shows us. The excitement of new flowers appearing in the garden, the sheer joy of just running, the pleasure of a bath and the interes1ng box a toy comes in. Jesus calls us to be child-like in our faith. Part of what He meant was that we are to trust; in God’s good nature, in the truth that God wants the best for us, in the fact that Jesus teaches us the best way to live, in the truth that God is more forgiving, lovingly compassionate and merciful than anyone we will ever know. When we believe all this deep in our hearts then our lives begin to change . As we approach Summer we will have the General Assembly where important decisions will be made that will influence all of God’s Church of Scotland. I am sure like me you will be praying that God’s Will be followed. I know that many people pray for St Mark’s and this is much appreciated because prayer is the fuel on which a Church depends. Malawi Commi0ee Report It is intended to have a re1ring collec1on on Sunday 29 June to help our friends in Mpachika. On Saturday 20th September the commi ee are having a coffee morning which will follow the St. Mark's series of summer coffee mornings. Your support will be very much appreciated either by helping, baking, dona1ng a raffle or coming along on the day. At that 1me it is hoped there will be a delega1on from Malawi in Aberdeen which will include a member from the Mpachika congrega1on. Aberdeen Presbytery are s1ll at the stage of nego1a1ng with the Malawians but it is hoped that dates will be finalised soon. Please remember Malawi in your prayers as in recent months the country has been having a troubled 1me. David Yacamini

World War One Commemora6on 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the first World War. Britain declared war on Germany on the 4th of August following the German’s invasion of Belgium. The war started on 28th July when Austria declared war on Serbia following the assassina1on of its Arch-Duke, Franz Ferdinand, a month earlier. The complex poli1cal rela1onships between the countries of Europe led to more and more countries becoming involved and by late 1914 Russia, Japan and Turkey were also involved. St Mark’s already commemorates the dead of the Great War through the various War Memorials from the South Church, East and Belmont Church and Trinity Church but this year it is planned to hold a Service of Commemora1on in memory of those who gave their lives in the conflict. If you are related to any of those named on the memorials or are related to any other deceased service man or woman please provide details of their service and any other informa1on so that our Commemora1on can be an inclusive and personal thanksgiving to those who made the ul1mate sacrifice in the Great War. As you can see there are quite a number of gaps in the Flower Distribu1on Rota this quarter. Receiving the Church flowers gives a real boost to bereaved or ill members and all you have to do is drop them off on the way home. Please think about helping out in this small way. St Mark’s Rambling and Hillwalking Group The Rambling and Hillwalking Group had to change a few of its planned walks earlier this year however the following were undertaken:In March we had a walk from the Bridge of Don to Castle Street via the Beach Promenade and FiSe. The walk was into very strong winds and we came off the Prom early and walked through Old Aberdeen and the Spital and back onto the Prom at the Broad Hill. We had an interes1ng look at the graveyard of the Snow Kirk at College Bounds. Lunch was taken at FiSe, sheltering behind the seawall, before we headed to Castle Street. On 16th April a few walkers undertook a short walk from Milton of Crathes and up to the Castle. A lovely walk around the grounds was enjoyed and spring was certainly in the air with a good showing of spring flowers and the trees just beginning to grow their new leaves. Saturday 19th April was the day for the first hill walk of the spring with a lovely walk to Clachnaben. Seven walkers had a good day out climbing this prominent peak and a few even ventured on to the rocky summit. On the following page are just a few of the planned ou1ngs in the months ahead. We like to take a flask and sandwiches so we can stop anywhere and we always have a good laugh. A Note from the Treasurer At this 1me of year I am only able to report on the first full quarter because the Messenger Deadline falls before we reach the end of the second quarter. However, star1ng on a posi1ve note I am pleased to say that Congrega1onal Giving has improved such that by the end of the Quarter FWO & GiN Aid are on budget, running at 25% of the annual figure. Regre ably Open Plate and Other offerings are below the budgeted level. Other Ordinary General Income is well below budget at only 13% of the budgeted level rather than at 25% but in most cases the income does not accrue equally throughout the year and there is no cause for alarm. Our Total Ordinary General Income at £23,161 is at 22% of the budgeted level and again gives no real cause for concern for the reason already given. On the Expenditure side, our Ministries and Mission Alloca1on is on budget and although our Presbytery Dues are less than expected the whole amount for the year has been paid in full. Local Staffing Costs are on budget at 25% of the annual figure but with some varia1on in individual headings. Costs related to building upkeep are below budget at 16% for the quarter. Other Local Costs are at 22% just below the expected 25% of the annual figure. Overall Total Ordinary General Expenditure is at 24% of the Annual budget at £25,310 giving rise to a Deficit for the First Quarter of £2,150. I would hope however that as the year progresses income from Regular Fund Raising Events, Weddings, Bap1sms and Funerals and Hall lets will boost our Ordinary General Income to see this posi1on reversed. The Circle of Care The members of the Circle of Care who a ended the Palm Sunday Communion and ANernoon Tea were all most apprecia1ve of the enjoyable 1me they had. Many thanks to all who helped in any way, - OAK Volunteers, Drivers, Minister, Elders and Pianist. The next ANernoon Communion and Tea will be held on June 8th at 2.00pm.
The Strollers Although the Strollers are oNen covering the same ground some1mes we do something dierent. This happened in March when, because of the weather, we walked to the Art Gallery and visited The Tapestry of Scotland Exhibi1on. This was a most interes1ng aNernoon as it really was a wonderful display. We hope that in coming walks we shall have be er weather, especially as we shall be going farther aďŹ eld, taking the bus to such places as Stonehaven, Fe ernear and Ellon and then walking there.
