Letter from Interim Moderator Isn’t it wonderful that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses? We can all go through periods when we feel that we are running out of steam, our petrol tanks are empty, our batteries are running low. My favourite singer/ songwriter is Bob Dylan. He has written a tremendous range of wonderful songs on a variety of themes such as love, romance, breaking up, self-doubt, changing times, protest, religion, hypocrisy, spiritual yearning, clothes drying on a washing line, reflecting on many dimensions of life. He has been a prolific songwriter. In a period when he was struggling to write a song, he included this wonderful lyric, “if there is an original thought out there, I could use it right now”. Dylan, the great original songwriter that he is, also draws heavily on the rich collections of songs “out there” which others have composed and there’s nothing wrong with that. As Christians, and yes, even as Ministers, we can go through times when we find it difficult to pray; how to express things in the right words. I recommend that you buy an anthology of prayers such as “The Little Book of Lent” or Angela Ashwin’s “Book of a Thousand Prayers”. These are collections of prayers from a range of God’s people. You will find when you are reading them that some prayers will strike a chord with you. You will feel they were meant for you to hear. By reading these prayers we can be strengthened and encouraged in our own faith and be given a richer and deeper vision of God in life and creation. Of course, in the Bible itself, reading though the Psalms can be a great blessing. They express many of the highs and lows, the thoughts and feelings that we have. As we journey towards Easter, we follow Jesus on that very costly path to the Cross. We observe and feel the pain of such pure goodness and love being rejected. (Continued on Page 4)

We see and relate to the misunderstandings of the disciples, the fickleness of the crowd, the self-preservation of those in power. But thanks be to God, above them all the Sun shines. Or you could say, the Son shines. The Son of God walks through the Valley of Death and comes out on the other side in the glorious Resurrection. Evil and its machinations will attempt their worst, but Christ is the Victor. Love, purity and goodness will prevail. Thanks be to God. May you be blessed in the knowledge that you are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses and that the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ prepares a path for you and is with you. The OAK Café At the end of December 2019, it was decided that the OAK Café should cease trading because of falling customer numbers and consequently poorer financial performance. It was however, also decided to retain the provision of ‘Special’ Lunches, the Macmillan Afternoon Tea and the Christmas ‘Cracker’ Lunch. Tickets for these events will be on sale, 4 – 6 weeks before the event and available at the Sunday after Service Teas and from members of the OAK Management Committee. We hope you will continue to support these good value meals for the benefit of others.

Pastoral Care during the Vacancy Now that we no longer have a Locum an issue arises over Home/Hospital visiting but I am pleased to say that a solution has presented itself thanks to one of our former ministers, namely Rev John Mutch Watson LTh. John has kindly offered to provide visits to those who are housebound, sick etc and by request he will also do Home Communion. You can also contact our Interim Moderator, Rev Duncan Eddie and his contact details are on the back page. It’s good to know that John is willing to help St Mark’s out in this way and he will be happy to receive your calls or other requests. By the time you are reading this in the magazine the Men’s club winter session will only have the AGM and end of session meal with the Guild ladies to enjoy. The programme has been very varied with some very interesting and entertaining speakers. We look forward to welcoming you back in October and hope you have a pleasant summer break.
The St Mark’s Ramblers and Hill Walking Group The Ramblers have been busy walking with a varied programme being offered. The weather as usual has been a little unpredictable but some lovely cold days have been enjoyed. Some new members have joined us recently and if you would like to take part just give Ian a phone, text message or e mail. The following a just a few of the highlights: Tuesday 12 November was a day with a poor forecast and only two walkers braved the drizzle to take the bus to the outskirts of Banchory for a short stroll along the old railway and riverside paths. It was a nice walk but as we approached Banchory after about 3 miles the rain began to fall more heavily, and after an early lunch break undercover in the park it was decided to return by bus to Aberdeen. Tuesday 19th November, a cold dry day saw 8 walkers meet outside the Church for a lovely walk through the town and along the Spital to Old Aberdeen and the first stop of the day in the University Cruickshank Botanic Gardens. A cold but enjoyable stop while enjoying a coffee break from the flasks. A walk down to Seaton Park and, after crossing the busy road, we travelled to the mouth of the River Don and a walk back along the sea front and the return via the Castlegate and Union Street. A cold but lovely walking day and much better than the recent rain. (Continued on Page 8)

Tuesday 26th November was cancelled due to the poor weather forecast. Tuesday 3rd December, a change to the arranged walk took the group on a lovely City Centre walk from Bridge Street up to Victoria Park, a short break was enjoyed there before heading towards Kings Gate and Morningfield Road and up to Rubislaw. We then took some back lanes and followed the Denburn to Hazlehead park where we enjoyed our early lunch stop. After lunch an early bus home finished a lovely day’s walking. Monday 9th December the walkers enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch in the Atholl Hotel. Tuesday 10th December No walk, Tuesday 17th December Christmas Ramble around the City Centre. 2020 Tuesday 7th January the walkers had a lovely ‘blow the cobwebs away’ New Year walk from the Castlegate, to Footdee, a sheltered spot was found for a coffee break. On restarting we walked along the prom all the way along to the Bridge of Don, stopping for a short lunch break on the way. Passing through Seaton Park to the Chanonry and along the Spital before we said our goodbyes on George Street. A good walk for the New Year with the weather very windy and quite chilly but dry after the first little shower. Tuesday 14th January a good bus run to Crathes was the starting point for 8 walkers as they picked up the old railway line walk and proceeded to Milton of Crathes, a short coffee stop then the group walked one of the many tracks around the Castle grounds. A lunch stop at the handy tables was enjoyed before continuing around the estate before making our way to the main road and the bus back. Dry weather, but a very cold wind kept the walkers on the move although time was taken to admire the wooden carved animals and birds. Tuesday 21st January was a day for ticking off some hills as we walked around Aberdeen. We met at the Church and took the 59 bus to ARI at Foresterhill and the first of many hills!! We walked through the hospital 8
grounds to Westburn park for a short coffee stop. We continued with the hill theme by walking through Cornhill hospital grounds and down to Rosemount and along Hill Street. Then Woolmanhill and on to Schoolhill took us into the City Centre. We then walked to the Duthie Park where we had lunch. Ferryhill was the next hill, and we passed Whinhill Road and onto Fonthill Road before heading along Holburn Street and finishing the walk. A lovely day’s weather and 9 walkers enjoyed the hills with not too much climbing involved. Tuesday 28th January, the bus to Ellon took us to our starting point for this circular walk that hadn’t been tackled before. A gentle stroll alongside the river took us back up to Castle Street and we walked alongside the Deer Wall towards the town before heading up School Road and the woods. Gentle walking through the woods took the group to the golf course. A red squirrel was glimpsed but being of a shy nature it didn’t hang around to see us all. We proceeded to cross Hospital Road and we picked up the old railway line which we followed until reaching the viaduct over the river. Negotiating the path down to the river we followed this to the park where lunch was enjoyed in the sun. After lunch a short walk back to the centre and the bus stop for home. A good day’s walking enjoyed by eight of us in cold but dry weather. Tuesday 4th February A change to the planned walk due to a windy weather forecast had the group taking the bus to Hazlehead where a quick flask of coffee was enjoyed. A lovely walk around the whole of the woods and near the golf courses was enjoyed and it was very sheltered. Back in the park saw the group have their lunch before heading to Johnston Gardens via Craigiebuckler and Walker Dam. The walk finished when Queens Road was reached as some took the bus home. From Stiubhart MacChoille It’s easy to read the story of Adam and Eve and The Fall and feel guilt and shame. We know we are equally guilty of sin and deserving of the consequences Adam and Eve received. But every time I read their story, I seem to see less of Adam and Eve’s behaviour and focus more on what God does in the story. I think I’ve taken for granted how incredibly close God is to His creation in these verses. He’s so close that He “breathed the breath of life into [Adam’s] nostrils” (Genesis 2:7). He’s so involved with His creation that when He saw the man was lonely, He reached down His hand, took one of Adam’s ribs, closed the flesh, and “made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman” (Genesis 2:22). Even after the sin, the shame and the hiding, God remained near. He looked for His children in the garden, He talked to them, He asked them questions. And here is something interesting: although Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden, God did not leave Adam and Eve. Yes, there is discipline from God. But there is no distance from God. Just in case you ever wonder if God loves you, look at Adam. Look at Eve. Just in case you ever wonder if you’re alone, remember He’s been with us since the very beginning. Just in case you ever wonder if you were a mistake, remember how intentionally God created us, breathed into us and formed us. Just in case you ever wonder if your sin is too great this time, remember that God didn’t go anywhere during the original sin. He did the opposite. He drew near to Adam and Eve. He sought them out. We see him do the same throughout Scripture, with numerous men and women until, eventually, He comes so near that He is in flesh, born among us. And he pays the supreme sacrifice on the cross. He takes the punishment we deserve. And having done so, He rises to new life. He offers us forgiveness for our failings; peace to calm our fears; grace to guide us; and a promise that He will never leave us or forsake us. That’s how much we matter to our Heavenly Father. Guild of Friendship We are now half-way through the second half of our session and the attendances have been good. As we come towards the end of our session we look forward to entertainment by the Acclamations and Vocal Moves, finishing with our Afternoon Tea Party on 23 March. St Mark’s Guild We are now in the second half of our session and at the time of writing there are quite a few meetings still to come. Our second Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 8th March and hopefully it will have had the usual support from the congregation and friends. The proceeds are given to the church and go towards St. Mark’s Ministry and Mission contribution to central funds.
Christian Aid In 2019 Christian Aid Week raised £8m. with over 10,000 churches in the UK taking part and St. Mark’s contributed £960 towards this total. Over the past year Christian Aid was able to provide vital healthcare in Sierra Leone – (Continued on Page 18) 17
Over 58,000 people have access to well-built clinics. 64,000 have received hygiene training, helping mums and children to fight off illnesses 13,000 women are able to save and pay for things like transport to their nearest clinic, through community savings groups. The Mission and Outreach Team will meet soon and decide on fundraising for Christian Aid and other projects in its remit and information will be given in the Family News on Sundays. Christian Aid Week 2020 is from 10-16 May and features the effect of climate change in Kenya.
Changes in Church of Scotland Structure In the hope of saving money, several changes have been made in how the central office of the Church of Scotland is structured with sections being combined. The World Mission Council, for example, is now part of the ‘Faith Impact Forum’ together with what used to be the departments of Church and Society, and Interfaith. The Forum has the former Moderator, Rev Dr Susan Brown (Dornoch Cathedral), as its Convener. It appears that the former WM staff will continue their work on global issues and maintain contacts with partner churches and organisations around the world. The bi-monthly WM magazine which informs about this work will continue in its current format for a few months and will be available in the vestibule as usual. It gives brief insights into what is going on in various parts of the world where the Church of Scotland has relationships or people working with partner churches and others to support and learn from them. You are welcome to pick up a copy to read at home (in 10-15 minutes) and you are sure to learn something of interest that you did not know before about projects abroad - and in Scotland also. 18
2020 Stamp Appeal In 1986 Pearl Stephen, wife of the then minister at the Scots Kirk in Kandy, Sri Lanka, began a women’s project in the garage there. From that small beginning came the Women’s Development Centre (WDC) which set up a school for disabled children, and community development work, including work with commercial sex workers vulnerable to HIV. But it is best known for its work with victims of sexual violence. After Pearl’s death in 2013 her daughter-in-law took over the leadership of WDC and she combines total commitment to the girls in its care with a love and compassion that does not judge. There is accommodation for 50 girls and young women who have been raped or abused and come from all over Sri Lanka and while they are waiting for court cases to be resolved they are helped to care for their babies and trained in crafts and skills that will help them when they leave. WDC also runs an initiative to allow women to sell their hand-made products in Kandy and a recent addition to the original building is a café where all cooking and serving is done by women from WDC’s programmes. The food is all grown locally, there is minimal use of plastic and maximum use of recycling and composting and now more people are being attracted to the original craft shop. All money raised from the Stamp Appeal this year will go to support the Women’s Development Centre in its work.

Long Service Awards On Friday 7 February 2020, the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Right Reverend Colin Sinclair presented Long Service Awards to a goodly number of Elders and others who had given service over a long number of years to the Church and its organisations. Included in that number were nine individuals from St Mark’s and the BB who had given at least thirty years of service each to the church. These were: Anne Donaldson, Joyce Forbes, Elaine Macdonald, Kay Montgomery, Sylvia Strachan, David Yacamini, Jean Yacamini from St Mark’s and Stewart Innes and Allison Stewart from the BB. Abigail Ministries – Rugut Projects A group of children from SEED School wearing the football kits that I sent over.
They were delivered on 3 February 2020 – 67 days after I posted them on 28 November 2019. It was a marathon task where I was chasing from my end and Grace was chasing from Eldoret. We were in almost daily contact with the courier, Fedex UK and Fedex Kenya. There were over 100 emails, texts, letters and phone calls during this time and we still could not get the parcel past Customs. Every day there was another request for information. They requested letters detailing the contents, then a commercial invoice, phone numbers of sender and recipients etc – the list seemed endless. And, of course there were requests for further payments to cover Custom charges. It was a very frustrating (and expensive) time.

But they were finally delivered, and the children are delighted with their new kits. Sadly, we have lost a number of sponsors recently so if you would like more information about Rugut Projects monthly sponsorship scheme, please let me know.
