Letter from the Interim Moderator Dear friends As I write this it is following the terrorist attacks that happened in churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. It is evil and cowardly to murder people while they are participating in worship. The actions are so cruel and inhumane that I struggle to make any sense of them at all. In a very real and disturbingly tangible way these events express something that connects with the original Easter. When Jesus was hung up on the Cross it was the powers of the world rejecting him. The Son of God, for all his goodness, his obedience to his heavenly Father, his searching after the lost, his call for justice and his challenging of hypocrisy, people said No they didn’t want him. They rejected him. Insulted him, mocked him and did their best to get rid of him. For a while during that midday the powers of the world seemed to be in charge and the world was in darkness. Jesus experienced that darkness on the cross when he cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Thankfully the No to Jesus was not the end. In three days, God gave his own answer to Jesus’ life; a resounding Yes. God raised Jesus from the dead. Therefore, God the giver of life is for Jesus. God brings Resurrection where the powers of evil do their worst. We trust that those whose lives were abruptly taken are now safe and in peace and wholeness in the loving presence of God; that the perpetrators of these horrific acts will find the saying to be true: “those who live by the sword will die by the sword”. Evil cannot keep going. It falls out with itself and ultimately destroys itself. Goodness and faithfulness to God, on the other hand, have a lasting impact on this life and continue into eternity. 3
We look forward now to Pentecost, when we celebrate God blessing His Church with the Holy Spirit. We do not set about living the Christian life on our own strength. The Spirit enables the character of Jesus to grow in our lives. Isn’t that wonderful? One description of prayer is that is “most deeply allowing God to happen in us, the Spirit bringing Christ alive in us.” Prayer is given to us. Prayer is not something we squeeze out with effort, but something that happens when we let God be God. May God bless you richly over this season of Pentecost! Duncan Eddie Interim Moderator

The Apostles’ Creed The Apostles’ Creed is the basis of our Christian Faith, and on our website, you can now explore the Creed and its meaning interactively; this is thanks to Professor Peter Gray, a Church of Scotland Reader. There is a link to it on our main webpage, just below the Daily Scripture Reading. Otherwise key in this web address: http://www.stmarksaberdeen.org.uk/the-apostles-creed/ The verses are mouse-active; click on the highlighted words and you get to the relevant part of the commentary. Thus, you can read the bits in any order, as much as you want at a time. Peter Gray notes: There was a lot of thought, and a lot of background reading, that went into it. I tried to use modern words and modern scientific understanding and to avoid theological jargon, so as to make it more understandable. However, it is biblically based, with bible references, and the underlying theology comes from Prof. James McEwen, who taught in the Divinity Department in Aberdeen University and who was much loved and respected, and on whose booklet "Why we are Christians" (now out of print) it is based. I am particularly grateful to Alex McConochie for the difficult technical job of converting my old html text to desktop-publishing form for our website. Professor Peter Gray

A Note from Richard Foster I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for the welcoming attitude I've had at Saint Mark's. I've never felt so at home in other churches! To help you pinpoint who I am, I'm that blind man with the strange gadget which enables me to read (and sing?) hymn words kindly emailed to me each week. Remarkably, everyone is even tolerant of my English accent and "bathroom baritone" singing voice! Rumours about a forthcoming happy event involving me and Amanda, "my bonny lady", are correct. Your prayers and good wishes for us are welcome, of course. Richard Foster
The Guild of Friendship By the time you read this we will have finished our session with an Afternoon Tea. All of the members, along with their guests, enjoyed themselves and our day finished with everyone receiving a piece of cake from one of our members who had her 70th birthday that day. St Mark’s Church Pastoral Team The recently formed pastoral team would like your help. We are a small group who visit Church members on behalf of the Interim Moderator/Minister and the aim is to call and support members who perhaps don’t get to Church very often nowadays. The visits are to support the quarterly visits by your elder, not replace them, and are purely as a courtesy visit only. If you would like someone to call or visit someone who is in hospital or in care and would benefit from a friendly visit, please contact the office 01224 640672 between 10.00am and 1.00pm, there is an answering machine for messages to be left outside these times. It is also very important that the Church knows of anyone who is ill or about to change addresses, perhaps going into care. And we ask for family to notify us if your loved ones have passed away. There have been instances recently that we have not been notified and have found out about the death of a member weeks after the funeral. Ian Lord Secretary Pastoral team

As a reminder: Door Duty Elders (or others) should attend at 10.30am, hand out Orders of Service and relevant Hymn Books etc and arrange for one person at each side to carry in the Offering Plates at the start of the service. One (or two) Elders should uplift the offering at the close of worship and take it to the Deacons’ Room where all four (or five on a Communion Sunday) will count and record the offering. The slip from the Cash Book and cash etc should be given to the Treasurer and the record sheets to the FWO Treasurer (Miss Dianne Morrison). 12

St Mark’s Rambling and Hill Walking Group Tuesday 5th March, we took cars to Kintore for a lovely walk to Muir of Kinellar via Brae Farm and return via Cairntradlin and Kirkton with the railway featuring for the last couple of miles. On the walk out of Kintore the leader pointed out where part of the old Aberdeenshire canal ran on its way from Aberdeen Harbour to Port Elphinstone at Inverurie. The weather stayed dry but a little colder than the previous week’s walk. Saturday 9th March had the walking group travelling to Stonehaven for a lovely little walk. We walked along the sea front to the harbour where a short stop was taken, after the short stop we headed to the woods and a stroll through the trees stopping to look at the Shell House. It was lovely and sheltered in the trees and on returning to the sea front the group headed to Cowie and the shelter of the wall for our lunch break. A walk along to the end of the path and return saw the group heading for home after this lovely bracing walk. Tuesday 12th March a walk to the West End of town from Hazlehead round the Den of Maidencraig and into the park at Hazlehead. On restarting we wandered through the forest to Foggieton Woods, that took us down to Cults Primary School and down into Cults. A lovely walk, which had not been done for a long time Tuesday 19th March, the group met at the Diamond Bridge in Tillydrone and had a lovely walk up to Perwinnes Moss at the Bridge of Don. It was a very pleasant day for walking with lots to see. Tuesday 26th March, getting off the bus at Mains of Drum the group walked back towards Culter on the old railway line as far as Newton Dee village and the bus back into town. Tuesday 2nd April Postponed due to poor weather 18
Tuesday 9th April was a change of destination and the group had a walk from the Tivoli to the River Dee on Market Street and we had a short stroll on the riverside path until we joined Wellington Road and the walk to Balnagask near Nigg Kirk where a short break was enjoyed. We continued on to Doonies Farm looking at the new harbour construction on the way. From Doonies after the lunch stop we passed over Tullos Hill and Loirston Country Park (formerly the waste landfill site). The bus was taken from Wellington Road to get us safely back to town. Tuesday 16th April. An enjoyable walk that took the group from the meeting point on Bridge Street to the Duthie Park via South College Street, Crown Street and Polmuir Avenue. After the short stop we followed the Dee alongside the river all the way to the reservoir at Cults. A short lunch break was enjoyed and on restarting we walked back along the old railway line to Ruthieston and took the bus back into town. Saturday 20th April. This was the Easter visit to Glentanar and what a lovely day was had with lovely sunny weather and warm temperatures. Starting from the visitor centre we walked along the track and passed the chapel until we came to our favourite stopping point and time for a short break. Continuing along the track we crossed the bridge that took us back on the other side of the Water of Tanar to the Small Lochan and back to the same spot where we had our earlier break. After the lunch stop we passed the Fairy Lochan and continued along until we re-joined the Water of Tanar and the return to the visitor centre and the car park for the return home suitably tired. Tuesday 23rd April was a nice day but a little windy for a walk from Bucksburn Howes Road to Hazlehead via Kingwells. Summer Coffee Shops It’s that time of year again and our weekly Coffee Shops start on Saturday 1 June 2019. If you are able to help on any Saturday, or even Saturdays, up to the middle of September please give your name to our Convenor, Anne Donaldson. If you can’t do a ‘shift’, how about donating, Home Baking, Homemade Jams etc or something as simple as a Raffle Prize. And remember we have the best prices in town, so if you cannot contribute to the running of the Saturday mornings just come along as a customer and bring your friends and neighbours. The Indoor Garden Party So far, we have not yet found a new outdoor venue, but the format is still popular and so this year put the date of Sunday 14 July 2019 in your diaries and ‘watch this space’ (or the Pew Leaflet or Website) for further information and details of Ticket Sales. 21
