St Mark’s Messenger Front Cover This month’s Messenger cover is a new photograph by Ian Lord of the Wallace Statue and St Mark’s, again re-crea=ng an old style cover. However this one is very different and (but for the black and white reproduc=on) is highly colourful. Wallace was decked out in dayglow colours in April of this year marking the start of the ‘Look Again’ Arts Fes=val. You can see the colourful image on the website’s ‘Messenger’ page.

Le)er from the Manse Dear Friends, I am sure you will agree with me that holidays are now an integral part of our culture. They certainly can take some =me to plan. Our family holiday to Barbados was planned last year. In the first week, a friendly stranger said to me, “Welcome to paradise, isn't it wonderful. Do you know there are no grey days in Paradise?” Well this wasn't strictly true. It’s the rainy season now in Barbados, grey rainclouds did appear the next day. Whether somewhere is almost paradise depends on what is important to us at the =me. If we call being on beau=ful beaches “being in Paradise” then Barbados can be called “Paradise”. There are beaches of white and red coral sand shaded by palm trees and lapped by beau=ful azure seas. If a holiday paradise means being surrounded by beau=ful scented plants then the tropical verdant forests and the vivid flowers of red, yellow, purple and blue make Barbados the place to go. Just as the scenery and ac=vi=es available in the mountains of Switzerland, Cumbria or Scotland make them almost paradise too. If architecture is important then in Barbados there are a variety of tradi=onal houses, called Cha els and modern buildings of all shapes, states and sizes to be discovered. Like houses and buildings all around the world they send out messages about wealth and the interests of the occupants. Does the aLtudes of the people in a na=on ma er when we’re on holiday there? On Barbados injus=ces have taken place. It was good to hear some descendants of former slaves speak of their history. Their aLtude was summed up by one person’s words, (Con nued on page 4)

“We all have a past. Why dwell on what has past? What happens now is what ma ers. We must forgive and work now for a good future .” In many ways this relates to Jesus’s message when He said, “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” God has provided us with a beau=ful and diverse world. It’s great to explore or be happy to stay in one place. It’s easy for us to forget that Jesus came to tell us the truth; that it’s the thinking, aLtudes and ac=ons of people about other people that defines if a place has that almost “Paradise” nature. As we enter another stage of history aNer the General Elec=on the words of the Barbadian and of Jesus will undoubtedly be very important to us all. Guild of Friendship Our session came to a close on 23rd March with a happy fun aNernoon. As in past years, we will meet up again on 1st June for High Tea at the Sta=on Hotel. We start the 2015/2016 session on Monday 5th October when we would love to have a few new members. Please do think about joining us - you will be made very welcome. We try to have as entertaining a syllabus as possible. Report by the Session Clerks Marjorie and I thought that we would write a short ar=cle for the magazine summarising how the first part of the year has gone. It is amazing how =me flies, as by the =me you are reading this half the year will have passed. We had a difficult =me at the start of the year with Rev Diane being off sick with the services being covered by Anne Smith, Andy Chris=e, Alex McConochie and members of the worship commi ee. Easter services started with the Palm Sunday celebra=on and the Circle of Care aNernoon Communion. It was good to see so many a end and aNer Worship and Communion a lovely spread was provide by OAK. It is a good chance to get caught up with old friends and many appreciate this =me of fellowship. The Easter Sunday open air early service was a perfect celebra=on of Jesus having risen from the tomb. The beau=fully warm spring morning added to the enjoyment of the =me outside and aNerwards we spent =me together and enjoyed a lovely breakfast in the hall. The family service was great fun with the young ones from the Sunday school. ANer a few weeks of resis=ng the chocolate tempta=ons they were then given more Easter eggs. They leN the Church to roll real eggs while the rest of the congrega=on enjoyed the service which was followed by a meaningful Communion before finishing in the hall with a cup of tea. We had the East Fife Male Voice Choir in the Church who kindly put on a concert for us in aid of charity. The Malawi Fund and Cairns Counselling received the proceeds. A varied selec=on of choral music was provided with a piano duet and an organ recital providing an interes=ng interlude. The Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend John P Chalmers visited Aberdeen in April and a ended various 6
engagements during his week-long stay. These included various Ecumenical Services as well as presen=ng long service cer=ficates to Margaret Donald, Barbara Coull, Sheila Main and Alan Brown at a wonderful service at Newhills Parish Church on Thursday evening 23rd April. The Drama Group will have performed the annual plays and the audiences will have enjoyed the Farmhouse Teas by the =me you read this and we hope that things will have gone well for them. June will see the start of the Summer Coffee Shops and we would encourage you to come along and enjoy all the home baking, soup and sandwiches that are on offer. Malawi Commi)ee Report We recently held a very successful evening when we were entertained by the East Fife Male Voice Choir in the Sanctuary. They sang a variety of songs which were obviously appreciated by the audience. The pianist also added to the evening's enjoyment by giving us an impromptu organ recital which we were able to watch on a large screen. £834 was raised which will be shared between Malawi and Cairns Counselling. Refreshments provided at the end of the concert by the Social Commi ee were much appreciated. Peter Kolowilo, Deputy Session Clerk, at Mpachika Church recently emailed with an update of the leadership of the church. Peter greeted St. Mark's brethren in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. St. Mark's will respond in due course. At the Aberdeen Malawi Partnership Group mee=ng an update on the flood appeal was given. Money currently stands at £6,545.06 and this will be divided equally among Mulanje Mission Hospital, Fairtrade and Blantyre Presbytery. Five commi ee members hope to travel to Blantyre on 1st July 2015. The Right Rev. John Chalmers, Moderator of the General Assembly, a ended the group mee=ng. Future events at St. Marks will be a Pot Luck Lunch on Sunday 31st May immediately aNer worship, a quiz, date s=ll to be arranged, and a joint fund raiser with the Projects Commi ee in the Autumn. The O.A.K. Report In February we had a successful Special Lunch in aid of The ScoLsh Bible Society. Our event on 16th April when the nominated charity was FOODSTEP was not very well supported but those in a endance enjoyed a very pleasant lunch and talk about the work of FOODSTEP. We enjoyed having the Circle of Care members and friends at the aNernoon Communion Service and aNernoon tea on 29th March. Our next Special Lunch is on 11th June in aid of DA (Drugs Ac=on) Aberdeen, and we look forward to seeing all our friends again. As always we look forward to seeing friends at the O.A.K. Do current health messages mean anything to you? Would you like to help develop more meaningful messages for older people? We are looking for enthusias=c people to join a small working group to explore what health is all about for you, your friends and neighbours. If there is sufficient interest we will co-ordinate a series of 5 group discussions over a tea or coffee at St Mark’s Church. These would be run on a weekly basis and would last for around 2 hours. We can look at a range of health issues that could impact on health and wellbeing. Topics could include physical ac=vity, smoking, nutri=on, alcohol and mental health and wellbeing. The programme can be decided by the group and a mee=ng =me would also be organised to suit the needs of those who wish to a end. A Note from the Treasurer I reported the outcome of our first 2015 Quarter to the Board on Monday 13th April when we had a surplus of £10,952. However this had been boosted by a Capital Receipt in excess of £9,000, thanks to redemp=on by HM Treasury of a number of War Stocks. The Board agreed to this money, as well as income from GiN Aid Tax and Cash in the bank being invested in the Church of Scotland Investors Trust. Although this news makes it sound as if St Mark’s is doing well, in reality we are just scraping by. Ignoring this windfall income our first quarter of 2015 didn’t do too well. With the very poor weather at the start of the year church a endance was also poor and income from FWO was below the an=cipated budget. Budget levels on a range of income headings were also down. On a posi=ve note expenditure was also below budget in the first quarter although some periodic bills were not then to hand. By the =me you are reading this Messenger we will be almost half way through the year and the picture both on expenditure and income may well have changed, for be er or worse is difficult to say. At the risk of repea=ng myself one thing that would improve our posi=on would be a change from giving in cash when you come to church to giving by Bank Standing Order which ensures that your GiNs to God are received both when you are in church and when you are unable to come, for whatever reason. A endances at the start of the year during the bad weather were poor and FWO income reflected this. Regre ably there was no sign that those of you who missed weeks made up your offerings when you came back. Our Stewardship Programme did have a posi=ve effect on giving, please don’t let that good start driN away. Alex McConochie 17
Noah and His Ark Towards the end of April I was asked to cover for Diane’s holiday by taking two services and since we were s=ll in the Easter Season I planned an Easter Retrospec=ve, the Easter story told in Hymns and Readings and an Easter Songs of Praise. Then due to the sad death of Diane’s sister-in-law in South Africa I was asked to do one more service and so I decided to speak about Noah and his faith. During the week I was planning the service, choosing hymns and wri=ng my address I received an e-mail from someone who had no idea what I was working on and I decided to include its content in the service. I said at the =me I would share it with you and so here it is: Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark Don't miss the boat. Remember that we are all in the same boat! Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. Don't listen to cri=cs; just get on with the job that needs to be done. Build your future on high ground. For safety's sake, travel in pairs. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. When you're stressed, float awhile. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. No ma er the storm, there’s always a rainbow wai=ng. Most people walk in and out of your life, but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart. Alex McConochie 18
The Guild By the =me you receive your magazine the Guild session will be complete, ending with a joint meal, with the Men's Club at the Sta=on Hotel. We have had a varied programme during the session and it was good to have some members of the congrega=on join us at mee=ngs which were of interest to them. Mee=ngs resume on Monday 5th October, so please come along and join us.
Summer Coffee Shops Coffee Shops will begin on Saturday 6th June and con=nue un=l the middle of September. Your support is what makes these events successful so please come along and bring some friends with you. As ever, dona=ons of home baking and raffles will be gratefully received. Projects Commi)ee We will be holding a ‘Summer Fun-Day’/ANernoon Tea in the hall on Sunday 19th July from 2.00 - 4.00pm, with the usual stalls, quizzes, raffle etc.

St Mark’s Rambling and Hillwalking Group The St Mark’s Rambling Group is always on the lookout for new members to join us so please contact Ian for more informa=on and how suitable any par=cular walk might be for you. All abili=es catered for. Some of the previously planned walks have had to be cancelled or rearranged to other dates, with the following being a couple of the most recent rambles. A short local walk saw members take the bus to Balnagask before walking through the golf course and up to the Torry Ba ery which always gives a good view of the city. A coffee/lunch stop was had there before we headed back towards town passing a very busy harbour on the way. On Saturday 18th April only six walkers were able to take advantage of a lovely spring walk in Glen Tanar. We scored with the weather as it was comfortably warm throughout the walk and a relaxing lunch was had beside the water of Tanar. ANer a relaxing break in the sun we started heading back to the car park. What a pity more hadn’t been able to join us. The following are walks planned for the coming months and they include a couple of evening walks for those who can’t manage to join us during the day. As usual all may be subject to change. Aberdeen Seafarers Centre The Aberdeen Seafarers Centre is situated on Market Street and was formed as a non-profit making charity and opened its doors in December 2011. It is an Ecumenical partnership of the three Interna=onal Chris=an Mission Socie=es, the Apostleship of the Sea, the Sailors’ Society and the Mission for Seafarers. They work together to bring comfort and welfare to seafarers visi=ng the port of Aberdeen and offer welfare services, prac=cal help, advice, care and friendship. There is a range of recrea=onal ac=vi=es available to all seafarers along with facili=es for them to contact families at home across the world. The Centre relies on help and support from a wide range of local companies; dona=ons and the support of local volunteers. There are volunteering opportuni=es for people to man the Centre, to help by being a fund-raiser or to become a ship visitor. There are also (Con nued on page 22)

people at home who could help by kniLng the woolly hats that are collected and then distributed to the seafarers. See the pa ern which follows this ar=cle. An evening Fes=val of Praise at the Salva=on Army Citadel on Saturday evening 25th April was led by the Scotland Fellowship Band of the Salva=on Army. The Rev Howard Drysdale, the Sea Chaplain, spoke about the work of the Centre and thanked all those who gave up their =me to keep the Centre open. He also spoke about the ďŹ nancial help and the provision of the building on a rolling short term tenancy and he launched a Building Fund with the hope that in the future they will be able to secure their own premises in order to grow the exis=ng facili=es. The Lord Provost, the Bishop of Aberdeen and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland a ended. The Moderator, Right Reverend John Chalmers spoke at the end about the good work of the centre and praised their work before he closed the service with the Benedic=on. Then following the very simple pa ern below you could knit a woolly hat that would help me to help sailors from all over the world. Please do one or more, but each one really does help me to show the love of Christ in a PRACTICAL way to the 80,000 plus seafarers who visit the port each year! Using 4 mm kniLng needles, cast on 100 s=tches. K1, P1 for 3 inches. Change to 1 row Purl and 1 row Knit for 5 inches. Then decrease as follows (on every knit row only): K 9, K2 together to end of row. K 8, K2 together to end of row. 22
K 7, K2 together to end of row. K 6, K2 together to end of row. K 5, K2 together to end of row. K 4, K2 together to end of row. K 3, K2 together to end of row.
