Be The Light Winter Solstice Walk

All AGES Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Join us on the shortest day of the year to remember that many in our community aren’t able “to see the light” because of struggles with mental illness or difficult situations. Follow the luminary walk through the forest guided by visual messages from the community. Discover artist created lantern sculptures expressing the peace of wild things. Light a candle in honor or memory of someone who struggles with or struggled with mental health. Gather around a fire in the glowing winter light while surrounded by a dreamy winter soundscape. To share the light, create a luminary with your own message to take home and light your neighborhood. The artist portions of this program are supported by a 2022 Arts & Culture Grant awarded to Semilla Center for Healing and Arts.

U.G.L.Y. Sweater Dash

All ages Louisiana Oaks Park, 3520 Louisiana Ave. S. The U.G.L.Y. Sweater Dash is back this winter! Dig out last year’s treasure, throw on a masterpiece you just created or simply enjoy the creativity of others. This 5K course loops through Louisiana Oaks Park and the lighted trees of Oak Hill Park. Afterwards, warm up across the street at Park Tavern and revel in your accomplishments while wearing your new race medal. Registrants also receive a goodie bag. Pre-race pick up will be Friday, Dec. 2. More information will be sent to participants.

Ne w Year's Gnome Search

ALL AGES Clues given to various parks Each week in January a different New Year's gnome will be placed in one of the city's parks. Once a gnome is placed in a park, it will remain there until the end of January. We will give out clues to help locate the different gnomes each week on Tuesday morning through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@stlouispark), as well as GovDelivery emails. It is said that those who snap a photo with one of the New Year's gnomes will have some of its good luck transferred to them! Share your photos with us through social media by posting them in the comments section of our weekly clue posts.

Inspired by: Black History Month Join us in our city parks this coming February for “Inspired by: Black History Month.” Through the program, short biographies of Black and African American City of St. Louis Park employees will be featured throughout the city’s parks, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to learn more about those that make up our community and workforce. Each poster will highlight one city employee and will include someone that inspires them when it comes to Black history. The City of St. Louis Park recognizes the importance of recreation and the health and wellness benefits it provides to people of all ages.

ALL AGES Vista Lutheran Church, 4003 Wooddale Ave. S. Fare For All is a cooperative food purchasing program that sells groceries at discounted prices and is open to everyone. No registration is required, and many forms of payment are accepted. Visit www.fareforall.org monthly for more information.

The city offers a program for those that live, work or attend school in St. Louis Park that may need financial assistance to participate in our recreation programs.

How it works • A family member can receive a maximum of $200 in fee assistance per calendar year (January – December) and must pay the first 50% of the activity/program fee. • Eligibility is based on family size and household income. Using the table below, find your family size. If your maximum total household income is at or below the amount shown and you live, work or attend school in St. Louis Park, you would qualify. • Fee assistance must be approved for each program/activity. • Special circumstances will be considered if your income exceeds the guidelines or if there are other extenuating circumstances. • Those who qualify should submit an application. Each week, join these award-winning classes for 45 minutes of pure fun. Classes are mixed-age so siblings can be together. Indoor Skateboard Camps at 3rd Lair

AGES 6+ 3rd Lair Skate Park, 850 Florida Ave., Golden Valley Camps for beginners to the boarding experts and everybody in between! The basics are taught, like balance, pushing, dropping in, skate park safety and etiquette. Instructors are experienced in the sport and have years of teaching knowledge. Equipment needed for camp includes a skateboard and helmet. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are recommended. All equipment is available at no extra charge if needed. All participants are welcome to stay and board after the instruction concludes.

Youth Basketball League GRADES 2 – 6 Location varies: Crystal, Golden Valley or St. Louis Park This recreational league provides youth the opportunity to play against other cities through a partnership with the cities of Crystal, Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park. Youth will learn basketball skills, playing as a team and good sportsmanship. Practices are held once a week at 6 or 7 p.m. and will start one to two weeks before the first game day, depending on coach availability, at St. Louis Park elementary schools. Games are played on Saturdays between 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., primarily at Davis Community Center in Golden Valley. St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for? If you are not sure what level to register your person for, register them as follows: • S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow. • S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha.

• F ee includes skate rental, ISI membership, three free sessions to public skating and practice ice (if available). • P ractice ice (if available) on the day of class is open to registered skaters and the parents of Snowplow class participants only. • P rotective headgear is required for all beginner skaters. Bicycle or lightweight hockey helmets are acceptable. • No shoes or boots on the ice. • S katers should wear warm, comfortable clothing, including gloves or mittens. • F irst time skaters and those using rental skates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class. • S katers may be moved at instructor discretion throughout the session to a level that is appropriate for them. • S tudents may remain in the same level for a few sessions before mastering the skills needed to move up to the next level. The special skater program consists of a modified learn-to-skate curriculum and test standards and opens the door to the wonderful world of ice skating for individuals of all ages and abilities. Graduating Seniors

Join us for the 2023 St. Louis Park Skate School Spring Ice Show, A Tribute to Disney! This is your skater’s moment to shine showing what they’ve learned in skate school in a choreographed program set to music. Skaters will be divided into performance groups by level just as in a typical skate school class and must be enrolled in regular session classes prior to participate.

This group is only for skaters that are graduating high school in 2023. Skaters must also be registered for their respective level show group. There is no fee to participate in this number. Practices will be determined by final rehearsal schedule.

Rehearsals will take place between Feb. 20 – March 19. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 18, and 1 p.m. Sunday, March 19. Registration deadline: Dec. 12 NOTE: Regular skating lessons will not be held during ice show rehearsals. Regularly scheduled lessons will resume for spring session in early April. Specialty numbers (Freestyle ONLY) Participating in a specialty number (solo, feature, duet, trio, etc.) is a fun and exciting opportunity for Freestyle skaters who are committed the program to perform their skills, individually or in a small group, to a large community audience.

To be eligible, skaters must have passed Freestyle 1 or higher and be registered for the Freestyle ice show group number. Skaters must also be an ISI home rink member with St. Louis Park and represent St. Louis Park at ISI competitions (for the entire competitive year and no later than Oct. 1 prior to ice show). The lanterns will represent our inner light on the darkest day of the year and honor those who struggle with mental health. Construct a simple paper lantern with precut wood and paper to express your hopes, thoughts and remembrances through visual designs on the lanterns. You have an option of leaving your lantern for the nature center’s Be the Light Winter Solstice Walk and picking it up after the event, or taking it with you to light up your neighborhood on the winter solstice. Be the Light Winter Solstice Walk ALL AGES

Franklin Ave. Join us on the shortest day of the year to remember that many in our community aren’t able “to see the light” because of struggles with mental illness or difficult situations. Follow the luminary walk through the forest guided by visual messages from the community. Discover artist created lantern sculptures expressing the peace of wild things. Light a candle in honor or memory of someone who struggles with or struggled with mental health. Gather around a fire in the glowing winter light while surrounded by a dreamy winter soundscape. To share the light, create a luminary with your own message to take home and light your neighborhood. The artist portions of this program are supported by a 2022 Arts & Culture Grant awarded to Semilla Center for Healing and Arts.

Are you looking for something to do with your family?

Get outside and enjoy the fun and activities of the winter season! Snowshoes and kicksleds are available to rent to use at Westwood Hills Nature Center. Check out equipment at the nature center front desk during regular business hours. Snowshoes and kicksleds must be returned a half hour prior to the building closing. Driver’s license and a credit card are required for deposit on all rentals.

Check out Westwood’s Park Packs! These free-to-use backpacks are full of nature activities, including tools for investigations, books, suggestions for art activities and more. Each Park Pack has a theme such as birds, forests, mammals, insects, ponds or reptiles and amphibians. These packs can be borrowed for a week at a time. AGES 4+ Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party! Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room. Party guests will meet a live animal, go for a hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, paperware and presents.

The interpretive center will be closed Nov. 11, 24 and 25; Dec. 25 and 26; Jan. 1, 2 and 16; and Feb 20.

Full refunds are given only when an activity is canceled by the parks and recreation division. When registration is withdrawn prior to the first day of the activity, a 20% administrative fee will be assessed. Partial credit will be considered if cancelation is due to injury or serious illness.

Winter maintenance

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recommends a low-salt diet for Minnesota waters. Doctors tell us to stick to a low-salt diet. Our lakes and streams should follow the same advice. When winter comes and snow and ice build up on Minnesota roads, parking lots and sidewalks, one of the most common reactions is to apply salt. This salt contains chloride, which pollutes water. When snow and ice melts, the salt goes with it, washing into our lakes, streams, wetlands and groundwater. It takes only 1 teaspoon of road salt to permanently pollute 5 gallons of water. Once in the water, there is no way to remove the chloride. At high concentrations, chloride can harm fish and plant life. Less is more when it comes to applying road salt.

The city’s solid waste division will once again be hosting the Recycling Champions class! This is a great way to learn more about how waste is handled by the city and about the recycling, organics and waste reduction programs. Those who participate in the class are then asked to serve as recycling ambassadors in the community. Sign up to join a great group of advocates and community leaders! Join the organics program and make a difference It’s the perfect time to join the growing number of residents already participating in St. Louis Park’s organics program. Over 41% of residents with city recycling services also participate in the organics program. This is a simple way to keep food scraps out of the garbage. Those carts are part of the city’s multifamily organics drop-off program, which expanded on October 1! The program now has a total of 11 drop sites. The city’s organics program helps keep food scraps out of the garbage by sending them to a commercial composting facility instead. And although single-family residents have had access to the program since 2013, many multifamily buildings do not collect onsite, so the city is expanding the drop-off program to make it accessible to more residents.

Save money on fuel this winter season with one easy tip According to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, your engine only needs 30 seconds to sufficiently warm up, even in cold weather. In fact, driving at slow speeds for the first few minutes will warm up your vehicle's cabin twice as fast as idling it! Considering the fact that idling your car for just two minutes uses as much fuel as 1 mile of driving, that’s a lot of savings. Start planning for spring planting The annual tree sale will start on March 1. Purchasing will again be online on a first-come, first-serve basis. The tree sale is an opportunity for St. Louis Park residents to get quality trees to plant on their properties at a discounted price. If you aren’t up for planting your own tree, the city also has a full-service option where a city contractor will plant a tree on your property and the city will share the costs. Enjoy the background view of the water garden as you watch the water flow over the top of the 6-foot-high waterfall and tumble down the hillside! From the accessible observation deck you can see the full view of the waterfall, water garden, Westwood Lake and surrounding woods. This is an ideal location for small events up to 20 people. The water garden features native Minnesota plants blooming throughout the summer season as well as streams, waterfalls and a pond. Veterans' Memorial Amphitheater rental

Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects Wolfe Park to the Excelsior and Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. The concrete stage at the bottom of the hill is edged with trees and shrubs. The facility is available to rent until 10 p.m., with an additional fee for overhead lights. If either the amphitheater or Wolfe Park building is rented with The Rec Center’s Banquet Room, the amphitheater/park building rate drops to half price. Total fee depends on time of day and rental length.

Mosaic Glass Sampler Lenox Community Center, 6715 Minnetonka Blvd. Glass mosaic sounds like a fancy, difficult art form. However, in this class you will learn how it can be fun and easy while creating a unique item for your home or a custom gift. Adaptive recreation

Reach for Resources

The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency which serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. NOTE: People not living in one of the above cities are considered “non-residents” and need to add $8 to select registration fees. Inclusion support

Reach for Resources provides inclusion support to children and adults with disabilities who would like to participate in their city’s parks and recreation programs. The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra. We collect donated instruments, clean and repair them, and place them into the hands of students in need. To date, more than 750 students have received their very own instrument through this program. Each year, grants are awarded to individuals or organizations for arts and culture projects that support community pride, connect artists and the community, and engage people in creative learning.
