We have a new online registration software for parks and recreation programs! CivicRec is a new, mobile-friendly site that provides users with a more intuitive, easy-to-navigate system for browsing and registering for recreation activities, classes, sports and leagues. In the future, it will allow users to search for and reserve community facilities, such as picnic shelters, park buildings, courts and fields. You will need to create a new account online or next time you visit The Rec Center or Westwood Hills Nature Center.

Steps to creating a new account

To create a new account, visit www.stlouispark.org/rec-registration. On a desktop device, click on the "Log In/Create Account" button in the upper left-hand corner, then select "Create Your St. Louis Park Account." On mobile devices, select "Account" in the upper right corner and then select "Sign Up."

Discover the joy of making Music Together! Sing, laugh, move and learn along with your baby, toddler or preschooler for 45 minutes of fun each week in these award-winning classes. The goal of Music Together is to make the world a better place by making it more musical. We do this by bringing the highest quality music and movement experiences to children and involving the grownups who love them in the magical process of development that only music can provide. The little ones love the engaging classes, and the caregivers love helping their children grow into confident, life-long music makers. Classes are mixed-age so siblings can be together. Families take home a song book, a corresponding CD and a code to download the music using our free app.

Birthday parties AGES 4+ The new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room. The cost includes the two-hour room rental. Party guests will meet a live animal, hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, tableware and presents.

Youth Basketball League

GRADES 2 – 6 Location varies: Crystal, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park This league provides kids the opportunity to play against other cities through a partnership with the cities of Crystal, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale. Youth will learn basketball skills, playing as a team and good sportsmanship. Practices are held during the week at 6 or 7 p.m. depending on coach availability at St. Louis Park elementary schools. Games are played on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Crystal and Davis community centers. Teams are coached by parent volunteers.

Outdoor Skateboard Camps

AGES 6 – 16 BY START OF SESSION Carpenter Park skate park, 4900 Hwy. 7 Learn balance, pushing, dropping in and skate park safety and etiquette. AGES 6+ 3rd Lair Skate Park, 850 Florida Ave., Golden Valley Camps for beginners to the boarding experts and everybody in between! The basics are taught, like balance, pushing, dropping in, skate park safety and etiquette. Instructors are experienced in the sport and have years of teaching knowledge. Equipment needed for camp includes a skateboard and helmet. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are recommended. All equipment is available at no extra charge if needed. All participants are welcome to stay and board after the instruction concludes.

Instructor Lisa Fisher, owner of 6Point Athletes, is a certified personal trainer, strength and conditioning consultant and group fitness instructor. Lisa started her own personal training business, 6Point Athletes, in September 2020. She specializes in sports conditioning and training for middle and high school athletes, along with strength training and conditioning for adults.

Boot Camp

AGES 18+ Wolfe Park Building, 3700 Monterey Drive St. Louis Park Recreation and 6Point Athletes are partnering again to run a five-week boot camp class in Wolfe Park. Each week participants will do a one-hour workout that will include strength training and cardio work. Equipment will be provided, but participants should bring their own yoga mat. St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for? If you are not sure what level to register your child for, register them as follows:

• S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Tot and Me class. An adult (age 16+) must also participate and be able to skate and assist child as needed. Skates required, no shoes or boots. • S katers who are 7 years old and older with little or no skating experience – sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Skaters may be moved at instructor discretion during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate for them.

In order to staff and manage capacity appropriately, the deadline to register for classes is two weeks prior to the start of the next session. Add your name to the waitlist if a class is full. Additional classes may be added. Skaters registered for the prior session will be given priority.

Freestyle Off-Ice Training

AGES 7+ Improve your skating skills and performance on the ice. The class will vary from week to week, covering jump and spin exercises, strength and conditioning, balance and flexibility. Classes are for Freestyle level skaters and are designated by current class level. Come to class wearing athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear.

Off-Ice Harness Training

AGES 5+ This private lesson training provides skaters the opportunity to practice and improve their air rotation position and eliminates the focus of the on-ice set up and potential falls. Training is offered to skaters of all abilities to work on their technique in a safe environment. Skaters should wear athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear or skates.

Competitive Team Skating  AGES 7+, GAMMA LEVEL AND UP

Join the Team St. Louis Park competitive skating teams as we make team selections and placements for the 2021 – 2022 skating season! What is Team St. Louis Park? Our teams work together to learn and perform an exciting choreographed routine to music and will participate in two to three competitions for the year, as well as the annual ice show. Lively music with entertaining themes, costumes and props are featured in these events. Teams may compete in ensemble, team compulsory or production events. What else do I need to know? Joining the team is a commitment for the full competitive season, September – May. Estimated total team participation fees for the season will be $50 – $65 per month (includes practice time, coaching, costumes/props and competition fees). Team St. Louis Park is for skaters ages 7+ currently working on Basic 6/Gamma through Freestyle levels. Ice Show Specialty Numbers Participating in a specialty number (solo, feature, duet, trio, etc.) is a fun and exciting opportunity for Freestyle skaters who are committed the program to perform their skills, individually or in a small group, to a large community audience. To be eligible, skaters must have passed Freestyle 1 or higher and be registered for the Freestyle ice show group number. Skaters must also be an ISI home rink member with St. Louis Park and represent St. Louis Park at ISI competitions (for the entire competitive year and no later than Oct. 1 prior to ice show). Placements are then determined by a point system based on the following criteria that is tracked throughout the year:

The Westwood Hills Nature Center is located on a 160-acre natural area. This newly constructed facility houses a multipurpose space, accommodating up to 130 for meetings, weddings, galas, corporate events and other special occasions. The space also can be divided into three smaller rooms for meetings and events.

Scout programs Westwood Hills Nature Center is a great resource for your scouting needs. We can customize our programs to meet your specific badge requirements, special awards and service projects. These activities provide scouts with the opportunity to build character and leadership, connect to the community, discover new things, collaborate with other scouts and have fun in an outdoor environment. You’ll learn how your home uses energy and identify energy-saving opportunities, which will lower utility bills. At in-home visits, energy experts can also install materials such as LED lightbulbs, door weather stripping and more. Visits are offered for only $35 or $50, depending on the age of the home. Free visits are also available for income-qualified residents. Awards will be given to cities with the highest participation rate per capita and the most air sealing and insulation rebates per capita. Planting trees

Use Mother Nature to your advantage! Fall is a great time to plant trees. Lower temperatures and more precipitation provide the new tree a perfect opportunity to start establishing. Did you know roots will continue to grow even when trees lose their leaves and the soil begins to cool? On top of those great facts, nurseries often have great deals at the end of the season. So do your part and plant a tree!

Pruning your trees: timing is everything

The best time to prune your trees, especially elms and oaks, is during the dormant season – November through March. DO NOT prune elms or oaks April through September. During these months, the fungus of Dutch elm disease and oak wilt disease are persistent and present within the atmosphere, potentially infecting any tree with an open wound (branch pruning location) through wind dissemination or insect transport.

The city license ensures that the company has liability and workers' compensation insurance to eliminate property owners' responsibility or liability of injury on or damage to your property from a misguided tree service. St. Louis Park residents are invited to adopt a storm drain by committing to keep it clear of leaves, trash and other debris. The simple act of sweeping and cleaning up around a storm drain protects creeks, wetlands and lakes by preventing pollution from entering our shared waterways. To ensure your participation, register as soon as possible. All activities have maximum enrollment limits. Activities also have minimum enrollment requirements and can be canceled if registration is insufficient. Westwood Hills Nature Center Halloween Party Volunteers are needed to staff the many roles supporting the Westwood Hills Nature Center Halloween Party Oct. 22 and 23, 6:30 – 9 p.m. Volunteer activities include registration, games, costumed characters and refreshments. Set up and take down opportunities are also available. Come support this family-friendly event that hosts hundreds of visitors each year!

The City of St. Louis Park has volunteer opportunities available to help support our city departments, which allows us to better serve the community. Beautify St. Louis Park

Hydrant Hero

Help beautify St. Louis Park by picking up litter and debris from a local park or street! This is a great activity for individuals and groups of all ages and can be done on your own time. Use your own bags and gloves, and volunteers can leave their bags in the trash cans located at each park. If bags are too large for trash cans, email Laura Smith at lsmith@stlouispark.org. Volunteers are invited to post their pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and tag the City of St. Louis Park (@stlouispark)!

There are roughly 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park, and although firefighters remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer. Interested volunteers can adopt a hydrant at www.hydranthero.org. Choose a hydrant, click on the “ Adopt me” link and fill out the registration form – you can even give your hydrant a name! Veterans' Memorial Amphitheater rental

Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects Wolfe Park to the Excelsior and Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. The concrete stage at the bottom of the hill is edged with trees and shrubs. The facility is available to rent until 10 p.m., with an additional fee for overhead lights.

Friends of the Arts is a nonprofit community organization that has been building the community through the arts since 1995, with a mission to support, promote and enhance the arts in St. Louis Park to bring people together. Friends of the Arts connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, supports local artists and coordinates community arts programs.

Public art in St. Louis Park

St. Louis Park has an abundance of public artworks throughout the city that help create a unique sense of place and local identity. Recent additions to the city include a large mural that explores our past, present and future in Historic Walker Lake, multiple nature-inspired installations in the new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center and an abstract sculpture at the new Bridgewater Bank headquarters on Excelsior Boulevard. Arts for Life scholarships

Funding is available to St. Louis Park residents with financial need to participate in arts and creative activities like music lessons, art class registration fees and necessary art materials. This program is rooted in the belief that creativity is inherent in all people, and that the arts should be affordable and accessible. Gift of Music

The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra. We collect donated instruments, clean and repair them, and place them into the hands of students in need. To date, more than 750 students have received their very own instrument through this program. Arts & Culture Grants

Each year, grants are awarded to individuals or organizations for arts and culture projects that support community pride, connect artists and the community, and engage people in creative learning. Artists, arts organizations, students, community and neighborhood groups, and cultural and religious organizations are encouraged to apply. Friends of the Arts provides fiscal sponsorship and support for informal and unincorporated arts groups and projects so they can receive grants and tax-deductible donations, and focus their time and energy on the art. Adaptive Recreation

Reach for Resources The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. NOTE: People not living in one of the above cities are considered “non-residents” and should add $8 to select registration fees. Inclusion support Reach for Resources provides inclusion support to children and adults with disabilities who would like to participate in their city park and recreation programs. Registration for these programs is done through your parks and recreation division.
