ALL AGES Join us at our community walking event where we’ll meet for a 1 – 2 mile leisure walk the second Saturday of every month to explore parts of the St. Louis Park trail system. Due to current COVID-19 guidelines, registration is required. Be prepared to wear a face covering during the walk.

Being active can look different for each person, so find an active move or activity that increases your heart rate. You'll receive a tracking sheet when you register. Fill in a circle each time you complete 30 minutes of movement. The goal is to do some kind of movement daily for 46 days! With spring coming, it’s time to re-energize yourself and movement can help you do that one step, jump or pedal at a time! Puzzlepalooza AGES 12+ The Rec Center Banquet Room, 3700 Monterey Drive Puzzlepalooza, St. Louis Park’s jigsaw puzzle challenge, is back! This year, teams of two to four compete to finish a 1,000-piece puzzle in the shortest amount of time. Puzzle is provided. Music Together
At Music Together, our mission is to make the world a better place by making it more musical. We bring the highest quality music and movement experiences to children, and we involve the adults who love them in the magical process of development.
Music Together Virtual Classes Ages 0 – 6 Sing, dance, play and learn! This rich music environment is full of opportunities for experimentation and play. It will help your child grow into a confident, lifelong music maker while supporting their musical development. Sessions includes one live, online 30-minute class at your designated class time; weekly 20- to 30-minute "Musical Play Date" Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with various themes; and weekly 20- to 30-minute "Story and Lullaby Time" Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Five Saturday dance parties and two parent education Zoom sessions are included. Sessions will be delivered through Zoom and recorded so you can enjoy them more than once.

These dance programs are designed to be fun and introduce youth to the art of dance.
Creative Movement – Pre-ballet AGES 3 – 5 Wolfe Park Building, 3700 Monterey Drive Participants will stretch, tumble and develop their gross motor skills through fun games, stories and a positive environment. This introductory class will teach students age appropriate skills that will improve their body strength and control while encouraging safety, group interaction and peer encouragement. AGES 4 – 12 Enjoy these fun Kidcreate projects in your own home! These art kits are so much fun it’s like having your very own private art teacher! The kit contains an easy-to-follow lesson plan, a link to a correlating online instructional video taught by a Kidcreate Studio art teacher, art materials needed to create one fridge-worthy masterpiece and additional suggestions for online learning that relate to the art lesson. Projects are created for elementary-aged kids but can also be used for preschoolers with adult supervision! $17 per kit.

Session registration deadlines and class exceptions In order to staff and add classes as needed, deadline to register for classes is two weeks prior to the start of the next session. Add your name to the waitlist if a class is full. Additional classes may be added. Skaters registered for the prior session will be given priority.

St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.
What level do you register for? If you are not sure at what level to register your child, register as follows: • S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow. • S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Class does move a little faster than Beginner Snowplow classes. Skaters may be moved at instructor discretion during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate or more comfortable for them.
• Fee includes skate rental, ISI weSKATE membership, practice ice (if available) and three free open skate passes. • Practice ice (if available) on the day of class is open to registered skaters and the parents of Snowplow class participants only. No practice ice available on Sunday sessions. • Protective headgear is required for all beginner skaters. Bicycle or lightweight hockey helmets are acceptable. • No shoes or boots on the ice. • S katers should wear warm, comfortable clothing, including gloves or mittens. • F irst-time skaters and those using rental skates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class to be on time. • S tudents may remain in the same level for a few sessions before mastering the skills needed to move up to the next level. Skaters that desire to progress more quickly are encouraged to register for two classes a week. • Class assignments are not guaranteed. Classes may be combined with others or canceled if the minimum number has not been met.

Special Skater AGES 5+ The special skater program consists of a modified learn-to-skate curriculum and test standards and opens the door to the wonderful world of ice skating for individuals of all ages and abilities. These tests are designed to be smaller steps to learn the basic skill maneuvers in the traditional Pre-Alpha through Delta levels. An authorized companion or parent/guardian who can already skate may join the skater, if desired, at no extra cost. Protective headgear required.

Developmental open ice skating
Developmental open ice skating is available for figure skaters to practice their skating skills with or without a private lesson. Admission can be paid monthly or at individual one-time entrances. No hockey pucks, hockey sticks or games are allowed during developmental ice times.

Squirrels
Spring Migration Bird Walk
ALL AGES Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Everybody’s favorite family of rodents, the squirrels! We’ll learn about the various members of this fun group of animals that live at Westwood. It’s not just the everyday gray squirrels, but also chipmunks, woodchucks and flying squirrels. We’ll explore the trails for different squirrel signs and learn about their various roles in nature.

New interpretive center includes sustainable design features The new Westwood Hills Nature Center interpretive center is open to the public, offering programming for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn about and connect with the environment. The interpretive center was built to respect the environment through location site and building design and has the distinction of being the first commercial building in Minnesota designed to achieve net zero energy. “Net zero energy” means that the nature center is designed to produce, at a minimum, as much energy as it uses, working toward a zero-energy building certification. Many sustainable, energy-efficient and low-impact features were chosen during the design process to achieve this goal. At the new interpretive center, you’ll find 13 signs highlighting the environmental strategies used. Here’s a preview of what you’ll discover: • Active and passive solar: Solar panels cover about 7,400 square feet of roof area and will produce nearly 150,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually to offset the building’s electricity needs. The placement of the building and its large windows gather natural daylight, reducing the building’s overall electricity demand. On the south side of the building, a concrete massing wall soaks in heat during sunny days in the winter, then releases the warmth at night. • Efficient winter comfort: The new energy-efficient fireplace, powered by the rooftop solar panels, warms the building without the carbon emissions of wood or gas. • Geothermal piping system: The parking lot sits atop a geothermal well field of 32 wells, located about 250 feet deep. This system uses liquid-to-air heat pumps to extract heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, using less than half the energy of a conventional heating and cooling system. As part of this system, pipes embedded in the building’s concrete floor pump hot water to radiate warmth directly to gathering areas. • Natural ventilation: The building orientation and placement of the windows allows for natural ventilation during temperate weather days. Additional sustainable design features include permeable pavers, rain gardens and bird-friendly glass. Former interpretive center deconstructed, reused During the summer of 2020, the city partnered with a local nonprofit to deconstruct the former interpretive center building. Many of the building materials were saved and sold for reuse at the nonprofit’s warehouse. A number of the ceiling beams were also saved to be rebuilt into outdoor benches to be used outside the new interpretive center. Veterans' Memorial Amphitheater rental
Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects Wolfe Park to the Excelsior and Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. The concrete stage at the bottom of the hill is edged with trees and shrubs. The facility is available to rent until 10 p.m., with an additional fee for overhead lights. Capacity dependent on current COVID-19 guidelines. If either the amphitheater or Wolfe Park building is rented with The Rec Center’s Banquet Room, the amphitheater/park building rate drops to half price. Go green Install solar in 2021
If you’ve ever considered installing solar panels on your home or business, 2021 is the year! The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) allows you to deduct a percent of the cost of installing a solar energy system from your federal taxes. The 2020 tax deduction of 26% has been extended through 2022, and at the same time the city has launched a new pilot cost share program called Solar Sundown. Under Solar Sundown, the city will fund the 4% difference between the 2021 ITC and the 2019 ITC, allowing property owners to receive a 30% credit on their solar investment. Solar arrays must be installed in 2021 and operational by Dec. 31, 2021. The goal of the Solar Sundown program is to double the amount of rooftop solar in the city by year-end, bringing St. Louis Park closer to meeting our Climate Action Plan goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030. Funding available for landscaping projects
It’s not too early to start thinking about spring landscaping projects that can help manage stormwater. The city’s Rainwater Rewards program offers funding and technical guidance to residential property owners who install projects that do at least one of the following: • P rotect and restore stormwater by capturing pollutants in rainwater runoff • I ncrease the watershed’s ability to store water • P reserve and restore native plant and wildlife communities • Protect and preserve groundwater quality and quantity Project examples include rain gardens, tree plantings, rain barrels, permeable pavement, green roofs and other innovative stormwater management practices. Program benefits include cost share, guidance with management practices, selecting designers and contractors, and future planning. The program is available to residential properties in St. Louis Park. Applications are accepted year-round while funding remains. Annual tree sale underway
The tree sale started March 1 and will continue until trees sell out. Visit treetrust.org/get-a-tree to order. Reach for Resources
The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. NOTE: People not living in one of the above cities are considered “non-residents” and should add $8 to select registration fees. Reach for Resources provides inclusion support to children and adults with disabilities who would like to participate in their city’s parks and recreation programs. "Be there" Initiative
City opportunities The City of St. Louis Park has volunteer opportunities available to help support our city departments, which allows us to better serve the community. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many volunteer programs and activities have been postponed or canceled. Hydrant Hero There are roughly 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park, and although we have firefighters to remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer. Interested volunteers can adopt a hydrant at www.hydranthero.org. Choose a hydrant, click on the “Adopt me” link and fill out the registration form – you can even give your hydrant a name! The feeling of isolation and loneliness is something that many aging residents face, and is linked to several health risks, both physically and mentally. COVID-19 can make these feelings worse for residents age 65 and older.

Beautify St. Louis Park Help beautify St. Louis Park by picking up litter and debris from a local park or street! This is a great activity for individuals and groups of all ages and can be done on your own time. St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts (FotA)
Friends of the Arts is a nonprofit community organization that has been building the community through the arts since 1995, with a mission to support, promote and enhance the arts in St. Louis Park to bring people together. Friends of the Arts connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, supports local artists and coordinates community arts programs.
Local arts events
Friends of the Arts organizes, supports and promotes high-quality arts and culture events and creative activities in St. Louis Park. Events range from interactive art-making sessions, to educational artist talks, concerts and theater productions with a focus on themes and topics relevant to St. Louis Park and featuring artists connected to our community. Public art in St. Louis Park
St. Louis Park has an abundance of public artworks throughout the city that help create a unique sense of place and local identity. Recent additions to the city include a large mural that explores our past, present and future in Historic Walker Lake, multiple nature-inspired installations in the new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center and an abstract sculpture at the new Bridgewater Bank headquarters on Excelsior Boulevard. Artist opportunities
If you are an artist, maker or creative who lives, works or has a meaningful connection to St. Louis Park, Friends of the Arts has opportunities for you. Opportunities include public art commissions, teaching opportunities, photo contests, calls for artwork for exhibits and art fairs, and more. Arts for Life scholarships
Funding is available to St. Louis Park residents with financial need to participate in arts and creative activities like music lessons, art class registration fees and necessary art materials. This program is rooted in the belief that creativity is inherent in all people, and that the arts should be affordable and accessible. Scholarships are awarded quarterly in March, June, September and December. Learn more and apply at www.slpfota.org/artsforlife.
Gift of Music
The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra. We collect donated instruments, clean and repair them, and place them into the hands of students in need. To date, more than 750 students have received their very own instrument through this program. Arts & Culture Grants
Each year, grants are awarded to individuals or organizations for arts and culture projects that support community pride, connect artists and the community, and engage people in creative learning. Artists, arts organizations, students, community and neighborhood groups, and cultural and religious organizations are encouraged to apply. Fiscal sponsorship
Friends of the Arts provides fiscal sponsorship and support for informal and unincorporated arts groups and projects so they can receive grants and tax-deductible donations, and focus their time and energy on the art. If you have a creative idea you’d like to bring to St. Louis Park, visit www.slpfota.org/fiscalsponsorship to schedule a consultation. Friends of the Arts is currently the fiscal sponsor of the Community Band, Maggie’s Farm Theater, St. Louis Park Art Fair, Community Storytelling Forum and Historic Walker Lake Placemaking Committee.
