We have a new online registration software for parks and recreation programs! CivicRec is a new, mobilefriendly site that provides users with a more intuitive, easy-to-navigate system for browsing and registering for recreation activities, classes, sports and leagues. In the future, it will allow users to search for and reserve community facilities, such as picnic shelters, park buildings, courts and fields. You will need to create a new account online or next time you visit The Rec Center or Westwood Hills Nature Center.

Steps to creating a new account

To create a new account, visit www.stlouispark.org/rec-registration. On a desktop device, click on the "Log In/Create Account" button in the upper left-hand corner, then select "Create Your St. Louis Park Account." On mobile devices, select "Account" in the upper right corner and then select "Sign Up."

The Rec Center Banquet Room, 3700 Monterey Drive Whether you are new to yoga or a novice, this class is for you! Onelove.yoga will take you through a basic foundational guided practice designed to open your heart and mind through aligning, strengthening and promoting flexibility in the body. Breathing techniques and meditation are also integrated. You can expect an emphasis on simplicity, repetition, ease of movement and modifications to welcome all. Onelove.yoga is a Minnesota, woman founded, nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring yoga and wellness to communities with limited access to its healing. Onelove.yoga was a recipient of the City of St. Louis Park Healthy Living Grant, allowing them to offer these yoga classes.

U.G.L.Y. Sweater Dash

All ages Louisiana Oaks Park, 3520 Louisiana Ave. S. The U.G.L.Y. Sweater Dash is back this winter! Dig out your treasured sweater, throw on the masterpiece you just created or simply enjoy the creativity of others. This 5K course loops through Louisiana Oaks Park and the lighted trees of Oak Hill Park. Afterwards, warm up across the street at Park Tavern and revel in your accomplishments while wearing your brand new race medal. Registrants also receive a goodie bag and a raffle ticket for prizes that are drawn at the post-race gathering. Pre-race pick up will be Friday, Dec. 3. Winter Solstice Walk

All AGES Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. We will use this shortest day of the year to help us remember that many in our community aren’t able “to see the light” because of struggles with mental illness or difficult situations. We can help to be the light for those who need it, and guide them to take their first “steps” out of the darkness. Activities include a self-guided luminary trail and making your own luminary.

New Year's Gnome Search

ALL AGES Various parks Each week in January a different New Year's gnome will be placed in one of the city's parks. Once a gnome is placed in a park, it will remain there until the end of January. Clues will be given out each week on Tuesday morning on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@stlouispark), as well as GovDelivery to help you locate the different gnomes. It is said that those who snap a photo with one of the New Year's gnomes will have some of its good luck transferred to them! Music Together

At Music Together, our mission is to make the world a better place by making it more musical. We bring the highest quality music and movement experience to children and we involve the adults who love them in the magical process of development. Our relaxed, yet focused classes nurture children’s natural enthusiasm for music and supports them on their journey to becoming confident, lifelong music makers.

Kidcreate Studio’s award-winning art classes allow kids to explore art in an environment full of giggles and grins. Kids create fridge-worthy masterpieces while learning art concepts and experimenting with different art materials. Curriculum is age-appropriate and designed to inspire. AGES 4+ The new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party. St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for? If you are not sure at what level to register your child, register as follows: • S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow. • S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Class does move a little faster than Beginner Snowplow classes. Skaters may be moved at instructor discretion during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate or more comfortable for them.

Special notes • Fee includes skate rental, ISI weSKATE membership, practice ice (if available) and three free open skate passes. • Practice ice (if available) on the day of class is open to registered skaters and the parents of Snowplow class participants only. No practice ice available on Sunday sessions. • Protective headgear is required for all beginner skaters. Bicycle or lightweight hockey helmets are acceptable. • No shoes or boots on the ice. • S katers should wear warm, comfortable clothing, including gloves or mittens. • F irst-time skaters and those using rental skates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class to be on time. • S tudents may remain in the same level for a few sessions before mastering the skills needed to move up to the next level. ANNUAL SPRING ICE SHOW Join us for the 2022 St. Louis Park Skate School Spring Ice Show! This is your skater’s moment to shine showing what they’ve learned in skate school in a choreographed program set to music. Skaters will be divided into performance groups by level just as in a typical skate school class and must be enrolled in winter 2 session classes prior to participate. Each group will have six to 10 practices between Feb. 21 – March 18 leading up to the show, including dress rehearsal on Friday, March 19. Practices will be 30 minutes in length, and final practice schedule will be determined by participation numbers. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 19 and 1 p.m. Sunday, March 20. New interpretive center includes sustainable design features The new Westwood Hills Nature Center interpretive center is open to the public, offering programming for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn about and connect with the environment. The interpretive center was built to respect the environment through location site and building design and has the distinction of being the first commercial building in Minnesota designed to achieve net zero energy. “Net zero energy” means that the nature center is designed to produce, at a minimum, as much energy as it uses, working toward a zero-energy building certification. Many sustainable, energy-efficient and low-impact features were chosen during the design process to achieve this goal. At the new interpretive center, you’ll find 13 signs highlighting the environmental strategies used. Here’s a preview of what you’ll discover: • Active and passive solar: Solar panels cover about 7,400 square feet of roof area and will produce nearly 150,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to offset the building’s electricity needs. The placement of the building and its large windows gather natural daylight, reducing the building’s overall electricity demand. On the south side of the building, a concrete massing wall soaks in heat during sunny days in the winter, then releases the warmth at night. • Efficient winter comfort: The new energy-efficient fireplace, powered by the rooftop solar panels, warms the building without the carbon emissions of wood or gas. • Geothermal piping system: The parking lot sits atop a geothermal well field of 32 wells, located about 200 feet deep. This system uses liquid-to-air heat pumps to extract heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, using less than half the energy of a conventional heating and cooling system. As part of this system, pipes embedded in the building’s concrete floor pump hot water to radiate warmth directly to gathering areas. • Natural ventilation: The building orientation and placement of the windows allows for natural ventilation during temperate weather days. Additional sustainable design features include permeable pavers, rain gardens and bird-friendly glass. Outdoor rinks with warming houses The city operates five parks with warming houses near their skating rinks: Birchwood, Browndale, Nelson, Oak Hill and Parkview parks. Veterans' Memorial Amphitheater rental

Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects Wolfe Park to the Excelsior and Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. The concrete stage at the bottom of the hill is edged with trees and shrubs. The facility is available to rent until 10 p.m., with an additional fee for overhead lights. If either the amphitheater or Wolfe Park building is rented with The Rec Center’s Banquet Room, the amphitheater/park building rate drops to half price. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recommends a low-salt diet for Minnesota waters. Doctors tell us to stick to a low-salt diet. Our lakes and streams should follow the same advice. When winter comes and snow and ice build up on Minnesota roads, parking lots and sidewalks, one of the most common reactions is to apply salt. This salt contains chloride, which pollutes water.

At your visit, you’ll learn how your home uses energy and identify energy-saving opportunities that can lower utility bills. Energy experts can also install materials such as LED lightbulbs, door weather stripping and more. The City of St. Louis Park offers discounted visits, available for only $35 or $50 (valued at $600) depending on the age of the home. The city also provides free visits for many households. Create meals, not waste: tips for reducing food waste You may not think you waste a lot of food at home, but the little bits here and there add up. In fact, compared to food wasted during production, processing and at retail, consumers are the biggest contributor to the food waste problem. But that’s also good news. We have the power to significantly reduce the amount of food that goes to waste and save ourselves money by making changes right at home in our kitchens and when we go shopping.

When snow and ice melts, the salt goes with it, washing into our lakes, streams, wetlands and groundwater. It takes only 1 teaspoon of road salt to permanently pollute 5 gallons of water. Once in the water, there is no way to remove the chloride. At high concentrations, chloride can harm fish and plant life. Less is more when it comes to applying road salt.

Get Smart Salting certified The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Smart Salting training program offers two level 1 classes and certifications for winter maintenance professionals. The goal of the training program is to provide the latest technologies, best practices and tools, and available resources to assist organizations to be effective and efficient in managing snow and ice. The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County.
