Dig out that treasured sweater you made last year or create a new one to wear this year when you run your 5K dash in your favorite park! Take a picture of you in your ugly sweater with your medal and either email it to labernathy@stlouispark.org or share it on our city’s social media, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@stlouispark) by Dec. 31 and you could be entered to win a $100 Park Tavern gift card! Be the Light Virtual Winter Solstice Event All AGES

AGES 16+ The Rec Center Banquet Room, 3700 Monterey Drive Check out fun ways to keep moving this winter by sampling fitness classes we’ll be offering this spring. Each class has high and low-impact options. Attend one or all of these free sampler classes. There will be a small break between classes and a chance to win prizes. Registration will be required to ensure physical distancing. Face coverings are required. Bring a yoga mat. Instructor: Judy Coughlin

On the shortest day of the year, let’s remember that mental illness or difficult situations can make it difficult for many in our community to see the light. We can help be the light for them and help them take their first steps out of the darkness. At sunset on the winter solstice, Dec. 21, help be the light by putting out a luminary or turning on an outdoor light or lantern. Put your lights where others can see them and invite your neighbors to do the same. Walk with your household to see the lights and feel the support in our community. Tune into our Facebook page, @WestwoodHillsNatureCenter, the three days before the solstice to get ideas on how to share the light and create three different luminaries. Share pictures of your luminaries and your walk on social media using #BeTheLight.

Music Together At Music Together, our mission is to make the world a better place by making it more musical. We bring the highest quality music and movement experiences to children, and we involve the adults who love them in the magical process of development.

Music Together Virtual Classes Ages 0 – 6 Sing, dance, play and learn! This rich music environment, full of opportunities for experimentation and play, will help your child grow into a confident, lifelong music maker while supporting their music development. Sessions includes one live, online 30-minute class at your designated class time; weekly 20 – 30 minute "Musical Play Date" Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with various themes; and weekly 20 – 30 minute "Story and Lullaby Time" Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Sessions will be delivered through Zoom and recorded so you can enjoy them more than once. Five Saturday dance parties and two parent education Zoom sessions are included.

Kidcreate Studio’s award-winning art classes allow kids to explore art in an environment full of giggles and grins. Kids create fridge-worthy masterpieces while learning art concepts and experimenting with different art materials. Curriculum is age appropriate and designed to inspire. AGES 4+ The new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room. The cost includes the two-hour room rental. Party guests will meet a live animal, hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, tableware and presents. Reservations taken January 16 through March.

Little Tigers Self Defense

GRADES K – 1 St. Louis Park Middle School, 2025 Texas Ave. S. Skill-based program with an emphasis on the fundamentals like dribbling, passing and shooting. Instructional scrimmages will be played. Mini basketballs are used, and baskets will be lowered for this activity. When registering, note up to two children with whom your child would like to be on a team.

St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for? If you are not sure at what level to register your child, register as follows: • S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow. • S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Class does move a little faster than Beginner Snowplow classes. Skaters may be moved at instructor discretion during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate or more comfortable for them.

Developmental open ice skating is available for figure skaters to practice their skating skills with or without a private lesson. Admission can be paid monthly or at individual one-time entrances. No hockey pucks, hockey sticks or games are allowed during developmental ice times.

Join us for the 2021 St. Louis Park Skate School Spring Ice Show! This is your skater’s moment to shine and show what they’ve learned in skate school in a choreographed program set to music. Skaters will be divided by level just as in a typical skate school class. Skaters must also be enrolled in regular session classes prior to the show to participate.

Be The Light Winter Solstice Walk

ALL AGES On the shortest day of the year, let’s remember that mental illness or difficult situations can make it difficult for many in our community to see the light. We can help be the light for them and help them take their first steps out of the darkness. At sunset on the winter solstice, Dec. 21, help be the light by putting out a luminary or turning on an outdoor light or lantern. Put your lights where others can see them and invite your neighbors to do the same. Walk with your household to see the lights and feel the support in our community. Tune into our Facebook page, @WestwoodHillsNatureCenter, the three days before the solstice to get ideas on how to share the light and create three different luminaries. Get outside and enjoy the fun and activities of the winter season! Snowshoes and kicksleds are available to rent and use at Westwood Hills Nature Center. Check out equipment at the nature center front desk during regular business hours. Snowshoes and kicksleds must be returned 30 minutes prior to building closing. Activities also have minimum enrollment requirements and can be canceled if registration is insufficient. If the registration deadline has passed, you may call the recreation office or Westwood Hills Nature Center to see if any openings remain. Instructors can't accept registrations in class.

Resident benefits

Residents pay a lower fee for many activities. A resident is someone who lives or works full time in St. Louis Park. Non-residents who register as residents will forfeit their fee and their place in the activity.

New interpretive center includes sustainable design features The new Westwood Hills Nature Center interpretive center is open to the public, offering programming for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn about and connect with the environment. The interpretive center was built to respect the environment through location site and building design and has the distinction of being the first commercial building in Minnesota designed to achieve net zero energy. “Net zero energy” means that the nature center is designed to produce, at a minimum, as much energy as it uses, working toward a zero-energy building certification. Many sustainable, energy-efficient and low-impact features were chosen during the design process to achieve this goal. At the new interpretive center, you’ll find 13 signs highlighting the environmental strategies used. Here’s a preview of what you’ll discover: • Active and passive solar: Solar panels cover about 7,400 square feet of roof area and will produce nearly 150,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to offset the building’s electricity needs. The placement of the building and its large windows gather natural daylight, reducing the building’s overall electricity demand. On the south side of the building, a concrete massing wall soaks in heat during sunny days in the winter, then releases the warmth at night. • Efficient winter comfort: The new energy-efficient fireplace, powered by the rooftop solar panels, warms the building without the carbon emissions of wood or gas. • Geothermal piping system: The parking lot sits atop a geothermal well field of 32 wells, located about 200 feet deep. This system uses liquid-to-air heat pumps to extract heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, using less than half the energy of a conventional heating and cooling system. As part of this system, pipes embedded in the building’s concrete floor pump hot water to radiate warmth directly to gathering areas. • Natural ventilation: The building orientation and placement of the windows allows for natural ventilation during temperate weather days. Additional sustainable design features include permeable pavers, rain gardens and bird-friendly glass. Outdoor rinks with warming houses The city operates five parks with warming houses near their skating rinks: Birchwood, Browndale, Nelson, Oak Hill and Parkview parks. Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects Wolfe Park to the Excelsior & Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. The concrete stage at the bottom of the hill is edged with trees and shrubs. The facility is available to rent until 10 p.m., with an additional fee for overhead lights. If either the amphitheater or Wolfe Park building is rented with The Rec Center’s Banquet Room, the amphitheater/park building rate drops to half price. Birthday parties AGES 4+ Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. The new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room. The cost below includes the two-hour room rental. The Westwood Hills Nature Center is located on a 160-acre natural area and overlooks a water garden. Go green

County grants for building material reuse

Hennepin County has grants available to homeowners and developers to deconstruct buildings to salvage building materials rather than demolish them. Deconstruction prevents usable materials from going to the landfill, makes building materials available to the community, provides jobs and supports local reuse retailers. In deconstruction, a building is taken apart mostly by hand. Compared to standard demolition techniques, the additional labor costs and time with deconstruction can be a deterrent. Homeowners and developers of residential properties can receive up to $5,000 to help offset the additional costs. Vegetable Growing Basics Class Virtual

Reach for Resources

The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Chaska, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. Hydrant Hero There are roughly 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park, and although we have firefighters to remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer. The feeling of isolation and loneliness is something that many aging residents face, and is linked to several health risks, both physically and mentally. A Tex Mex Fiesta

Flautas are next with chicken in a jalapeño/garlic paste and fried crisp in corn tortillas. We'll then make authentic Mexican rice with onions, garlic, tomatoes and fresh cilantro along with Mexican-style corn with lime aioli, cayenne pepper and Cotija cheese. Fajitas follow with tender strips of marinated beef and chicken with fresh sautéed bell peppers and onions wrapped in a warm tortilla shell. ADULTS Online Are you looking to start or continue a holiday cookie baking and decorating tradition? Register for this online, live, family-friendly, fun holiday cookie class for beginners. Gather your family for baking and decorating, or treat yourself to some quality personal fun time. Learn how to make royal icing and the basics for decorating cookies with it at home. Participants will be baking the cookies ahead of time so that they are ready to decorate at the start of class. The recipes will include a soft and chewy sugar cookie and a denser crisp sugar cookie. You can choose to bake one or both using your favorite cookie cutters! One of the instructor’s favorite holiday cookie cutter shapes is a gingerbread person. This is one of the shapes that proves to be a lot of fun to decorate year after year, and some time will definitely be spent on this shape in addition to other holiday shapes. Good news, the Metro Dining Club cards are here! The senior program is selling the cards once again, but with a different procedure than before as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the temporary closure of the Lenox Community Center. Two different sets of cards are available, one for the Minneapolis/west metro area and the other for the Anoka/northwest area. Gift of Music

The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra.
