Dear Members,

Summer has been off to an incredible start. We experienced record golf rounds in April and May, packed dining rooms and event spaces, and a racquets program in full swing. Every area of the Club has been buzzing with activity, and it has been wonderful to see so many members and families enjoying everything the St Louis Country Club has to offer

As you know, none of this happens by accident. Preparing for the season begins months before summer arrives. This year, our team hired and trained more than 130 seasonal employees across every department, bringing our staff to full strength and preparing them to deliver the exceptional experiences our members have come to expect.

With so many new team members joining us, we held our first-ever “Season Kickoff: All-Employee Meeting”, bringing together more than 120 employees from across the Club. Our goal was to ensure that every employee understands who we are, what we stand for, and the role each person plays in creating a memorable member experience.

Together, we discussed what a country club truly is, what makes St. Louis Country Club special, the importance of the member experience, and how each of us contributes to achieving it every day. Regardless of department or position, it is critical that everyone understands we share the same mission.

You may have also noticed several enhancements around the Club The landscaping improvements at the front entrance have created a more welcoming and beautiful first impression, while the landscaping and irrigation project in the courtyard outside the west entrance has transformed the space into an inviting gathering area for members and guests.

Having recently completed my first year as General Manager, I could not be more appreciative of the support and encouragement our membership has shown to both me and our team The positive feedback surrounding our food, service, course conditions, and overall member experience is a testament to the dedication of our employees and the engagement of our membership.

While we have already enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, there is still plenty of summer ahead. The calendar remains full, the Club is as active as ever, and our team remains focused on delivering exceptional experiences for our members and their guests.

General Updates

August Lap Swimming Contest

Get ready for one of our favorite summer traditions the August Lap Swimming Contest!

Beginning August 1, members of all ages are invited to register at the Lifeguard Hut and start tracking their laps throughout the month. Whether you're swimming a few laps each week or aiming for one of the top spots on the leaderboard, the contest is a fun way to stay active and challenge yourself before summer comes to a close.

A $15 registration fee includes an insulated SLCC water bottle, and swimmers will have the opportunity to earn prizes and rewards as they reach lap milestones throughout the month.

The leaderboard will be updated each Monday, so be sure to keep an eye on your progress and cheer on fellow participants. We hope you'll join in on the fun this August!

Splashercise

Looking for a fun way to stay active this summer? Join us for Splashercise every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.

This water-based workout is a great way to get moving while enjoying the pool and spending time with fellow members. The low-impact format makes it a great option for all ages and fitness levels.

ClubChella Returns in 2027

By popular demand, ClubChella is coming back! After the tremendous success of the inaugural event in 2024, we are excited to announce that ClubChella will return on September 11, 2027. The event brought together members from four clubs and welcomed more than 1,000 attendees for an unforgettable evening of live music, food, drinks, and fun on the polo field.

While details are still being finalized, we wanted to make sure members have plenty of time to save the date for what is sure to be one of the most anticipated events of 2027.

David Normoyle, a former employee of the USGA and a leading club historian, had this to say: “The most importantthingtorealizeisthatheritageisanassetforaclubthatcanbeasimportantinattractingand keepingmembersasagolfcourse,aclubhouse,orthemembershipitself.Justaseveryfamilyhasastory,as a club, your heritage is your identity. Preserving history is a process … not a project. The SLCC Archives Committee has spent hours, days, and yearstrackingdown,cataloging,andrestoringitemsthathelptellourstoryandpreserveourrichheritage.

Summer Turf Management:

Protecting Our Bentgrass During St. Louis Heat

As summer temperatures and humidity increase across the St Louis region, members may notice our grounds team applying water to fairways and greens during the day or conducting various turf treatments throughout the golf course. These practices are part of a comprehensive agronomic program designed to protect the health and playability of our bentgrass surfaces during some of the most challenging weather conditions of the year.

Our bentgrass fairways and greens are a hallmark of the Club and require specialized care during periods of prolonged heat. While overnight and early morning irrigation replenishes soil moisture and supports root health, our team also utilizes syringing during periods of extreme heat Syringing is a light application of water to the turf canopy that cools the plant through evaporation without significantly increasing soil moisture. This practice helps reduce heat stress and can lower turf canopy temperatures during the hottest parts of the day

In addition to irrigation and syringing, we employ advanced soil moisture management tools, including wetting agents and penetrants, on both fairways and greens. These products improve the movement and distribution of water throughout the soil profile, helping moisture reach the root zone more effectively and uniformly.

Wetting agents help prevent localized dry spots and improve the soil’s ability to retain and distribute moisture. This is particularly important during periods of high temperatures, when water can become unevenly distributed in the soil, leading to areas of stress. Penetrants, on the other hand, enhance water infiltration and movement through the soil profile, helping relieve surface tension and improve drainage characteristics. Together, these products allow us to manage moisture more precisely while promoting healthier, more resilient turf.

The combined use of irrigation, syringing, wetting agents, and penetrants enables our agronomic team to maximize water efficiency while maintaining the firm, consistent playing conditions expected at SLCC. These practices also reduce the need for excessive watering, support deeper rooting, and help the turf better withstand the environmental stresses associated with St. Louis summers.

Throughout the season, our staff closely monitors weather forecasts, soil moisture readings, and turf performance to make informed decisions regarding water management While some of these maintenance activities may occasionally be visible during play, they are critical to preserving the exceptional quality of our bentgrass fairways and greens.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to invest in the long-term health of the golf course. These proactive agronomic practices help ensure that our members enjoy outstanding playing conditions throughout the summer and for years to come.

GOLFCHAIRMAN UPDATE

Golf at SLCC continues to see tremendous participation. SLCC set consecutive monthly records for rounds played this spring, and participation in both daily play and Club tournaments continues to grow As course activity remains high throughout the summer and into the fall, we ask members to keep the following reminders in mind to help ensure an enjoyable experience for all golfers.

Established groups, such as the Wednesday morning ladies' games and the Saturday and Sunday morning men's games, take priority Subject to available course capacity, the golf staff will do their best to get other golfers out to play, and we ask that members be respectful of these priority groups.

Please get permission from the golf staff before starting play on any hole other than #1. This is particularly important before 9 a.m., when the grounds staff needs adequate time to complete their course preparations for the day Members with private carts are asked to communicate with the golf staff as well This is designed to help minimize delays or disruptions on the course.

The SLCC app is a great tool for planning your play and improving your experience on the course. Under the "Golf" heading, you will find weekly events and daily course conditions that give you a good sense of how crowded the course may be on any given day Official club golf events, wedding parties, and syndicate group play will all be noted there. The "Field Bar To-Go" feature allows golfers and walk up members to place their food and beverage orders before arriving at the field bar. This is a tremendous help to the field bar staff and a real boost to pace of play.

Summer thunderstorms are a fact of life in St. Louis. When the alarm siren sounds for a constant five seconds, a lightning strike has occurred within our set perimeter. All golfers, on the course and in the practice areas, must stop playing, mark their ball, and seek shelter immediately The SLCC app includes a lightning alarm status feature under the "My Club" heading, where a real-time countdown clock shows the estimated time the all-clear siren (three tones) will sound. Please note that additional lightning strikes after the initial alarm may delay the all clear, with alarm resets of 30 minutes each.

Earlier this season, Head Golf Professional Grant Masson shared educational videos covering Pace of Play, Taking Care of the Golf Course, and Golf Cart Etiquette. These topics remain important reminders as we continue through a busy golf season and work together to provide the best possible experience for the entire membership. Slushie Slam: Saturday, July 11

One of our most popular junior events returns! Junior players ages 7–15 will be divided into teams as the Banana Bombers take on the Strawberry Slammers in a day of tennis matches, team competition, and, of course, slushie-drinking contests.

August Tennis Camps: July 27–August 14

While many summer programs begin winding down, tennis camp is just getting started. Camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and includes tennis instruction, games, crafts, swimming, and Friday snow cones.

Paddle Season Is Almost Here

Believe it or not, paddle season is right around the corner. League sign-ups begin in late September, with league play starting in mid-October.

For tennis and pickleball players looking to stay active throughout the colder months, paddle offers a fastpaced game with plenty of volleying, strategy, and social competition. The sport continues to grow nationwide, and we look forward to building on the momentum from last season.

Milkshake Madness & Junior Carnival

More than 70 children participated in these summer kick-off events. From milkshake challenges and dunk tanks to water balloon games, target contests, candy, and snow cones, the events provided a fun start to the season at the racquets facility.

Patience Schock Wins Memorial Day Pickleball

Patience Schock emerged victorious in a field of 20 competitors during Round Robin, edging out Hillary Dutcher in a tightly contested finish.

Our adult tennis team enjoyed a successful interclub match against Forest Hills Country Club in May, coming away with a strong doubles victory.
