As President of St. Laurence High School, I am constantly reminded of what it means to be a True Viking. To be a Viking is to honor the sacrifices made by our families—parents who worked tirelessly to send their children to St. Laurence, knowing the value of an Edmund Rice Christian Brothers education. Many of our alumni are first-generation college students, and their success was built on a foundation of hard work, sacrifice, and determination.
A True Viking embraces the core values of compassion, courage, excellence, and community—values that are alive and well today. St. Laurence is not just a place of education; it’s where students become leaders who impact the world. For many, it was the starting point for journeys that took them to prestigious universities, around the world, and into new communities. The experiences that shaped their futures at St. Laurence are now being passed on to the next generation of Vikings.

A True Viking never forgets where they came from. They remember the tight-knit neighborhoods, humble homes, and the effort it took to make education possible. These formative experiences shaped their lives, and now they are giving back—supporting St. Laurence from near and far, across state lines and beyond. Their contributions show that the impact of a St. Laurence education reaches far beyond the individual, shaping not just their lives, but the lives of generations to come.
Today, St. Laurence is one of the fastest-growing Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the True Viking spirit continues to grow stronger. We are here to stay, we are here to lead, and we are here to ensure that every alumnus can proudly say their St. Laurence experience set them up for success, and that their children will have the same opportunity.
We invite you—our alumni, friends, and supporters—to join us in continuing this legacy. Your support, in time, talent, and treasure, makes it possible for us to offer this transformative experience to future generations. Together, we will ensure that the True Viking legacy thrives for years to come.
Go Vikings!

President
As the only Catholic high school with an International Baccalaureate Program in the Southland, we provide our students a unique opportunity to experience the most rigorous high school curriculum possible. This program has seen incredible success in just four short years, and we are thrilled to share that eight of our students earned their IB Diplomas this year—our highest number ever!
Congratulations to: Peter Mulligan, Kandy Martinez, Edward Martinez, Aurelio Tapia, Andrew Banaszak, Dominic Lagunas, Lucas Antolak, and Connor Marino. What a remarkable accomplishment!
In just our third year graduating a cohort of IB students, these are truly outstanding results. We could not be more proud of our students and incredible IB teachers—their dedication, passion, and commitment are what make achievements like this possible!
St. Laurence High School is restructuring its academic leadership to further strengthen instruction and datadriven improvement. Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, Ellen Yopchick will serve as assistant principal of instruction, a newly created role focused solely on supporting teachers through coaching, evaluations, and professional development. The position was established to build on the school’s culture of academic excellence and ensure educators have the tools to help students thrive.

Yopchick, an English teacher since 2017 and IB program member since 2021, will continue coaching girls volleyball while leading instructional growth.
Dr. Brian Gilbert, formerly assistant principal of curriculum and instruction, will now serve as assistant principal of curriculum and data analytics. This role was designed to give more dedicated attention to curriculum development and in-depth analysis of ACT, AP, and IB performance data to inform academic strategy. Gilbert, who has 20 years in education and eight at St. Laurence, has led research that has shaped key school initiatives.

Principal Kristy Kane said the changes allow both leaders to focus more deeply on their strengths, ensuring St. Laurence continues to innovate and push students toward their highest potential.

The Digital Advertising Career Pathway Program started in Fall of 2024. We found an excellent partner in alumnus Sean Sweeney ’91, owner of a digital advertising firm, First Position Digital who, along with his team, sponsored and mentored our students through digital advertising campaigns. We were lucky enough to have Mike Podrazik, who had over 25 years of experience in the business world to teach the class. Sean covered the cost of Meta certifications while Mike taught those credentials in class. Bringing Dave Pajeau, an expert in this field, on board is the perfect addition to this pathway class.
“After spending the past 32 years as a digital advertising executive on the corporate side, I could not be more excited to work with Sean, Anne, Pete, Mike and the students (who will be taking these courses) on the Digital Advertising Career Pathways program. What a unique and amazing opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in the digital space to a program specifically designed to these students’ potential future careers.”
—Dave Pajeau, STL’s new Digital Advertising teacher
“When St. Laurence first reached out in 2023, I was honored to share my expertise in digital advertising with Anne, Pete, and Kristy. What began as a conversation quickly evolved into a full elective curriculum as part of the school’s innovative Career Pathways program. Together with Mike Podrazik—who brought his own wealth of experience to the classroom—we built the foundation for the Digital Advertising track, outlining both a first-year course and a three-year vision. This past year, students successfully planned, launched, and analyzed real paid digital campaigns, earning certifications in both Google Ads and Meta Ads. Now, with Dave joining the team, the program is poised to grow even stronger.”
—Sean Sweeney ’
We kicked off the school year with another outstanding group of young men and women in the Class of 2029. In total, more than 320 students joined the Viking family, and we cannot wait to see all they will accomplish in their four years and beyond. Check out pictures from their first day as Vikings!

We’ve continued to see tremendous growth as we move closer to our goal of 1,200 students! Check out how far we’ve come in the last five years.

The growth and transformation of St. Laurence continued this summer with the renovation of our cafetorium—a reimagined space that will be enjoyed by every single Viking. By day, the space will provide our students a comfortable and modern dining hall with enhanced seating to better accommodate our growing community. The space will also have a direct entrance to our Mary Garden, allowing our students increased accessibility to outdoor space during the school day for socialization and relaxation, heightening their school experience.
The new cafetorium will also feature a separate cutting edge teaching kitchen. In this space, students in our Nutrition for Lifelong Wellness elective class will gain hands-on culinary experience, with an emphasis on making meals that promote a healthy lifestyle. They’ll dive into the essentials of nutrition, focusing on macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, and hydration, while discovering how these elements fuel their bodies and minds. This space will also transition into a one-of-a-
kind podcast studio, providing an avenue for students to learn more about media in the 21st century.
After school, the cafetorium will play host to our performing arts programs, with state-of-the-art lighting and sound to support students in these programs, and the addition of a new dressing room for theatre performers.
Families and alumni will also get to enjoy the space as it will undoubtedly host many events in the future, and we cannot wait to show it to you on your next visit to St. Laurence!

It was a moment two decades in the making for Coach Pete Lotus ’94—the legendary leader who turned Viking Baseball into a state powerhouse. Over 20 seasons, Lotus has amassed more than 500 wins, developed dozens of college athletes, and shaped the lives of countless young men—teaching lessons far beyond the diamond. Yet one prize had always eluded him: a state title.
That changed on June 14.
In his fifth trip to the IHSA State Finals—four as a coach, one as a player—Coach Lotus finally broke through, guiding the Vikings to an 8–5 victory over Benet Academy to capture the program’s first-ever state championship. It marked the fifth state title in St. Laurence history across all sports.
A sea of black and gold filled Duly Health and Care Field in Joliet as Viking fans showed up in force, and they were rewarded with a game to remember. St. Laurence jumped to a 5–2 lead through three innings, but Benet stormed back to tie the game in the fifth. The deadlock didn’t last long—Daniel Coyle roped an RBI double to the wall to put the Vikings back on top.
The game’s defining moment came in the sixth inning. With Benet threatening again, a Red Wing hitter sent a shot to the wall and tried to stretch it into a triple. But the Vikings executed a flawless relay—
right fielder Danny Donovan to second baseman Mickey Lotus to third baseman Corey Les—who applied the tag just in time. The umpire’s out call sent the Viking dugout and crowd into a frenzy.
From there, the Vikings slammed the door. Two more runs and a strong closing performance from Coyle sealed the 8–5 win and ignited a celebration two decades in the making.
The historic season didn’t just end with a trophy—it earned national recognition. The Vikings finished the year ranked No. 38 by Perfect Game USA and No. 52 by MaxPreps, which also named St. Laurence one of the top 20 teams in the nation for total runs scored.
Their 37–5 record—the most wins in program history—featured two-game Catholic League Blue sweeps of rivals Mount Carmel, Providence Catholic, and St. Rita, whom they later defeated again in the Sectional Semifinal. The Vikings also captured the Do It Stevie’s Way Tournament title with a statement win over Brother Rice, on top of a myriad of other impressive wins on their always difficult schedule.
But the celebration didn’t last long. True to form, the Vikings are already focused on what’s next. The team will move up to Class 4A in 2026, aiming to defend their title against the toughest competition in the state. With several returning starters and a strong crop of rising talent, the Vikings are poised for another run—and hungry for more.

It hasn’t taken long for Viking Softball to establish itself as one of the area’s strongest programs. In just seven seasons, Coach Teagan Walsh has hit the ground running and built a program that has produced multiple Division-1 athletes, won three straight GCAC Red Championships and had its share of postseason success.
The team took another step this past season, making a trip downstate and finishing fourth overall—earning the first IHSA state trophy for a girls program in St. Laurence history.
The road to state was filled with big wins against local foes, the most exciting of which came in the Sectional Championship against Nazareth Academy. Down 2-0 in the final inning, the Vikings strung together clutch hit after clutch hit to score three runs and win in walk-off fashion. The black and gold also racked up exciting wins against Evergreen Park and Montini Catholic en route to state.
Viking Softball will look to make more noise next year as they return three All State players—Demi Lotus ’28 (first team), Kayla Howard ’27 (third team) and Vanessa Kates ’26 (third team)—along with experienced pitching in Maddie Misch ’26 and Brea Cahue ’26.
On top of the two state trophies the Vikings brought home this spring, we saw some other strong postseason accolades from spring sports. Coming off a historic fourth place finish at state in 2024, the boys track and field team had another strong season. In total, the Vikings brought home medals in four different events the 100M dash, 4x100M relay, 4x200M relay and 1600M run—to cap off an amazing twoyear run for the program. Girls soccer made history of their own with their deepest postseason run in the program’s short history. After their Sectional Championship appearance, the girls will look to rebound in 2026 with a roster that returns many starters and a new head coach in Manny Cerritos, who has been a top assistant in the boys and girls programs the past two seasons.

In his first season leading the Vikings, head basketball coach Roshawn Russell was named District 8 Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Coach Russell led the boys basketball team to a Regional Championship and undefeated record in CCL play while helping elevate the profile of St. Laurence as a destination for basketball in Illinois.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Inaugural Glory & Gold Dinner on May 3, 2025!
Together, we generated more than $1.4 million in support of St. Laurence through this event—an incredible combination of live giving, campaign momentum, and the announcement of a transformational $1 million challenge gift from Jim Kochalka ’70.
One of the night’s most moving moments was honoring the late Tom Rezek— a beloved teacher and Viking legend whose over 60 years of service shaped St. Laurence. His family, including son Matt, joined us, and Matt’s heartfelt words brought the room to its feet. We were also thrilled to have Tim Grunhard ’86 as our emcee—his energy and support set the tone for an unforgettable evening filled with pride, excitement, and the power of the Viking community.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Coach Bob Fabrizio. Coach Fabrizio was incredibly influential to everyone he came in contact with players, students, coaches, and colleagues. Long after his tenure at St. Laurence ended, you could find Coach at our alumni events to support the Vikings. He was always one of the most popular people in the room for alums to reconnect with. His impact was lasting, and that was no more evident than in May, when we named our baseball field in his honor. At the event, Coach Fabrizio’s players from more than 40 years ago came and shared their stories of the lessons he taught them that went beyond sports. He truly was a coach in every sense of the word.

The True Viking Campaign is more than a fundraiser. It’s a bold affirmation of St. Laurence High School’s mission to shape students of character, compassion, and leadership. Publicly launched in May at our inaugural Glory & Gold event, the campaign aims to raise $12.5 million to sustain the school’s extraordinary momentum and prepare for the next generation of growth. As of this writing, we’ve surpassed $10.4 million, thanks to the generosity of alumni, families, and friends who believe in the future we’re building together.
The campaign strengthens three essential pillars of the St. Laurence experience:
• Access and Affordability
Expanding scholarship support ensures that a St. Laurence education remains within reach for families from across our 80+ zip code footprint. In a time when tuition can be a barrier, this support helps keep our school accessible to families who value faith, discipline, and academic rigor.
• Faculty and Student Services
Investments in faculty excellence and expanded student services are critical to our mission. Whether it’s academic advising, social-emotional support, or college and career counseling, the True Viking Campaign enables us to provide the resources our students need to thrive.
• Campus Enhancements and Program Expansion
We are actively transforming physical spaces to reflect our commitment to excellence across disciplines. A prime example: the renovation of our cafetorium into a multi-use space that will serve as a new home for drama, fine arts, and student performances. The cafetorium will be a vibrant addition that celebrates the creative gifts of our student body.
Early support for the campaign has come from both longtime champions and first-time contributors. More than 50% of campaign donors had not previously participated in major giving at St. Laurence. This surge in engagement is a testament to the shared belief in what St. Laurence represents—and to the leadership of President Joe Martinez ’99, the STL leadership team, campaign co-chairs George Scanlon ’75 and Joe Silich ’87, and the dedicated members of the True Viking Campaign Cabinet, whose generosity and volunteer efforts are bringing this vision to life.
As you’ll read in the inspiring story of Jim Kochalka ’70, featured alongside this article, the values instilled at St. Laurence endure across generations. Through the True Viking Campaign, we are honoring that legacy and ensuring it remains vibrant for decades to come.

This May, St. Laurence High School was thrilled to announce it had received a generous gift of $1 million dollars for its True Viking campaign from alumnus Jim Kochalka ’70. The five-year True Viking campaign will secure the school’s future by focusing on student aid, faculty support, and facilities. Most importantly, Jim’s donation is designed as a challenge gift and will allow other donors to have their own gifts matched through the remainder of 2025. In the words of President Joe Martinez ’99: “Jim embodies what it means to be a True Viking—his gift reflects a man who gives with intention and heart. Jim has shaped our leadership team and our school with humility and wisdom.”

Faith, respect and excellence are the bywords of the True Viking campaign, and the reasons why Jim chose to donate. Recalls Jim of the inspiring teachers he encountered: “When I was at St. Laurence, there were high standards—academically, athletically and for our behavior. It came from a place of love and kindness, but the Brothers absolutely had expectations of us. There was right and wrong. It was a sign of respect.” Jim recounted one particular example of being held to a standard of performance from his time on the cross country team. “One Monday after a weekend track meet, one of the teachers came up to me and said “you are naturally a great runner. But I watched you at the last meet, and you need to work harder.”
There was no coddling. Things like that spurred me to do better. And I see that same attitude carried forward in St. Laurence today.”
Those high standards by the educators at St. Laurence shaped Jim’s future successes. After graduation from St. Laurence, Jim went on to study psychology and received a PhD in clinical psychology from Georgia State University. In 1987, he began an executive coaching practice, consulting with senior management teams and individual
business leaders at large corporations, smaller companies and tech startups. He raised three sons with his wife in Tampa, Florida, and became a first-time grandfather earlier this year. Jim credits the 10th grade psychology class taught by lay teacher Mr. Hauser at St. Laurence for inspiring his future career. Speaking about the experience, Jim says, “We were given the basic Psychology 101 textbook, and I devoured it. I became fascinated with theories of human behavior. It led me to pursuing a doctorate, going into clinical practice, my whole career. St. Laurence shaped every part of me.”
In addition to his gift to the campaign, Jim has donated over a hundred hours of his professional expertise to the school, coaching the executive team at St. Laurence and visiting Chicago frequently for in-person working sessions. Indeed, that was how the Kochalka Challenge came about. Jim was moved to approach the development office, unsolicited, about a gift to the campaign after working with the executive team and witnessing firsthand how the high standards of his youth were maintained by the current administration. Working alongside President Martinez during and after Covid impressed Jim enormously. “My field of study is leadership and management, and I’ve worked with hundreds of executives. My gift is a tribute not just to the education I received, but to what I witness of the leadership team’s work now.”
While at St. Laurence, Jim experienced a troubled family environment due to his father’s alcoholism and the school became a refuge. “The Brothers of St. Laurence were the adults who cared for me and looked out for me. A teenage boy did not want to be singled out or the focus of attention, so it was done in a very subtle, tactful way.” Jim shared the memory of one particular day, when things were very bad at home, and his favorite teacher and track coach, Brother Kennedy, calmly came up beside him, put an arm around Jim’s shoulder, and said, very simply, “you’re going to be OK.” Jim notes, “There was a sensitivity. There was no formal meeting. He just made sure I knew he was there for me. That was how I learned about leadership.”
Jim’s commitment to the young men and women of St. Laurence is specifically designed to spur others to give as well. The True Viking campaign, the most ambitious in school history, is an investment for a future where many more students are given opportunities to grow in mind, body, and spirit, and Jim hopes to be joined by other alumni, parents and community leaders to support the campaign. In summing up Jim’s contributions, President Martinez says, “Jim has been more than a donor—he’s been a mentor, coach, and friend. His leadership inspires us. He gave not just his resources but his time, guidance, and belief in what we’re building together at St. Laurence.”
