The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans hosted a summit
in the main auditorium in the Givens Building, led by David J. Johns, executive director of the initiative, which President Obama established in 2012 in an effort to improve educational outcomes for African Americans and better prepare them for college and productive careers. These summits, Johns explained, were designed for adults to listen to African-American youth. In

The St. Louis American has received another national award for its Newspaper In Education program just as the paper launches the expanded program for its fifth
academic year. The National Newspaper Association (NNA) awarded The American first place among all large non-daily newspapers in the United States for its 2015-2016 Newspaper In Education (NIE) program. This
marks the fourth consecutive year – all four years of the program’s existence – that The American has won national first place honors for its NIE program from the NNA, the largest newspaper association in the country, with more than 2,200
