WELCOME LETTER
T
here is something special about this time of year along the Emerald Coast. The days grow longer, the calendar fills with gatherings and celebrations, and our communities come alive with the unmistakable energy of another beautiful season ahead. It is during moments like these that I am reminded how fortunate we are to share life across the Watersound Club® properties and all the experiences that make this place so extraordinary. At the Club, there is an energy that feels both exciting and familiar. Mornings begin with tee times under clear skies, afternoons bring friendly matches on the courts, and evenings invite us to gather over great meals, live music, and sunsets that never lose their magic. While our amenities are exceptional, it is the people who bring them to life that make this experience so meaningful. The spirit of our Members is what continues to shape and define all that we enjoy together. This issue of Watersound Lifestyle celebrates the many ways life here continues to grow and evolve. We invite you to meet your neighbors with a closer look inside the residential communities throughout our area. Each neighborhood offers its own personality, traditions, and sense of place, yet all are connected by a shared appreciation for quality living, natural beauty, and the warmth of community. It is always inspiring to hear the stories of how families found their way here—and why they chose to stay. We also take a broader view of life beyond the beach, highlighting the culture, events, and local character that make our region so dynamic. While our white sand and Gulf waters may first capture attention, those who live here know the true richness of this area extends far beyond the shoreline. From local celebrations to hidden gems and favorite traditions, there is always more to discover just beyond our gates. A special feature in this edition looks back at our third annual Rhythm on the Range, which welcomed thousands of Members for an unforgettable evening. What began as an exciting idea has quickly become one of our signature traditions— bringing people together through music, fellowship, and the shared joy of celebrating community on a grand scale. We also recognize the pursuit of excellence across our Club. We are proud to celebrate the many accomplishments of both Members and staff this year. From our Racquets Director competing on the professional tennis tour, to Members earning first-place finishes in regional pickleball tournaments, to team members who elevate daily experiences through dedication and care, excellence is visible throughout every corner of the Club. As always, thank you for being part of this remarkable community. Your enthusiasm, loyalty, and engagement continue to make the Watersound Club® experience such a treasured part of life for so many families. We remain committed to creating exceptional moments, meaningful connections, and lasting memories in every season ahead. We hope you enjoy this latest edition of Watersound Lifestyle and all the stories that celebrate the life we are proud to share together. Warm regards,

here is a particular kind of ease that settles over a person once they have found their place. Not simply the relief of an unpacked moving truck, but the feeling of waking up and knowing, without quite being able to explain why, that you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Across the Watersound community— Watersound Origins®, Ward Creek, Watersound Camp Creek®, RiverCamps® on Crooked Creek, and Latitude Margaritaville® Watersound—that feeling surfaces in different forms and in different voices, but it tells the same story.

“The Watersound Origins community has just been the best neighborhood,” says Sarah. “The sense of community. People watch out for each other. To know your neighbors and make good friends—people who step in when you need them—that’s everything.” Lee opened 30A Chiropractic & Wellness in Watersound® Town Center, steps from home. Sarah runs her interior design firm from home. Weekend mornings find them pedaling down to Scenic Highway 30A for coffee, and, when summer crowds descend on the surrounding area, the Eklunds barely notice. “You have everything you need—great restaurants, pickleball, basketball, swimming. Something we dreamed about but didn’t really know existed.”
WARD CREEK: COMING HOME TO FAMILY
Picnics, playdates, and front porch connections are part of everyday life at Watersound Origins.
WATERSOUND ORIGINS®: PUTTING DOWN ROOTS
For Sarah and Lee Eklund, the decision to leave South Dakota after 17 years was equal parts a leap of faith and a long-held dream. Seven months of winter had worn thin, and the call of warmer light and open water had grown louder every year. “It was always my dream to live by the beach,” says Sarah. “We just thought we might as well go for it. Our kids were the right age—if we waited any longer, they would have started putting down roots in high school.” Friends with a home along Scenic Highway 30A invited them for a visit. The Eklunds arrived as guests and left as converts. Those same friends steered them toward the Watersound Origins community, away from the transient churn of vacation-rental neighborhoods. They moved in January 2025.
Audrey and Mike Gillian have spent much of their lives moving. Mike served in the Navy for more than 20 years, and the two of them have called many places home. “By far, this is the nicest place we’ve ever lived,” Mike says. After retiring and spending time in Port Charlotte, the couple felt the pull north when their son Marc and his family were living in the Ward Creek community. When a house two doors down became available, they took it as a sign. The Gillians have six children and 15 grandchildren, so space mattered. They added a pool, and with five bedrooms and three full baths, there is room to host everyone. Granddaughters Isla and Laney come over several times a week. There is a special stool at the kitchen counter so 2-year-old Laney can stand beside Audrey while they bake, a flag out front for daily Pledge of Allegiance lessons, and Sunday church together. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had the opportunity to be so involved with our grandkids,” Audrey says. Beyond family, the neighborhood itself has become its own reward—bicycle rides, a Halloween tradition with smoked meat and costumed kids, and seafood boils with neighbors. “It’s a good mix—younger families, retired folks. You meet new people every time you step out.” WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

WATERSOUND CAMP CREEK®: AMENITIES, ACREAGE, AND THE LONG GAME
Lee Provow knows exactly what he gave up and what he gained. After 15 years of owning a home in the WaterColor® community, he and his wife sold in early 2022. They wanted something residential, permanent, and rich with amenities for their five grandchildren.

FALL/WINTER 2026
The Watersound Camp Creek community answered every question. Through the Watersound Club® Membership tied to each homesite, Lee now enjoys a two-minute golf cart ride to Camp Creek® golf course plus access to many pools, a wellness center, and tennis and pickleball courts that his grandchildren prefer over almost anything—even the beach. Lee secured his lot in the 2021 lottery and moved in February 2024, among the first residents. “The amount of land that is preserved— that will never be developed—coupled with The St. Joe Company’s development philosophy creates a very special environment.” Though his children and grandchildren remain in North Atlanta, the friendships forming within the Watersound Camp Creek community feel as though they are built to last. “I think we’re starting to forge what will be lifelong friendships. And that’s what makes it feel like home.”

LATITUDE MARGARITAVILLE WATERSOUND: A FAITH-LED ARRIVAL
Myra and Larry Small did not arrive at the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound community by accident. They arrived by conviction. They had explored Latitude communities in Daytona and near their snowbird home in South Orlando, but when they passed through the Panhandle on a road trip—intending to stay one day—they stayed three. “We just really felt like this is where we were supposed to be,” Myra says. “The people here are very open and willing to talk and get to know you,” Larry says. “We’ve been here about 10 months, and we have friends we see every day. That just doesn’t happen anywhere.” Pickleball, a women’s Bible study, a men’s group, Wednesday couples’ gatherings, and a Sunday gathering at home keep them as busy as they choose to be. Larry helps lead the community’s ministry club, assisting neighbors with practical needs. Myra bakes for neighbors regularly. “Every time I drive by the Gulf,” she says, “I just think, ‘I cannot believe I live here.’”
Life in Latitude Margaritaville Watersound centers on sunshine, connection, and resort-style living.
THE RIGHT FIT
Each family arrived looking for something specific: permanence, proximity to family, the right kind of quiet. Each one found it. Watersound® Real Estate—a boutique brokerage built as an extension of The St. Joe Company’s long-term vision—was designed to guide exactly that kind of search. Many of its agents live in the communities they serve, bringing firsthand knowledge no listing can replicate. Whether the move means a first home tucked among longleaf pines or a cottage two doors down from the people you love most, the path begins the same way: with someone who understands why the move matters— not just how to make it happen. BEYOND THE BEACH
An insider’s guide to the Emerald Coast lifestyle—where the real magic happens beyond the shoreline By ZANDRA WOLFGRAM
A
sk most people what they know about the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast, and the answer comes fast: sugar-white sand, turquoise water, sunsets that stop you mid-sentence. They’re not wrong. But the locals—the ones who stay long after the beach umbrellas come down—will tell you the real draw runs deeper. It lives in the hum of a Friday night concert drifting across Watersound® Town Center, in the crunch of a pine needle trail at dawn, and in the stillness of a coastal dune lake at dusk. From the live music at Watersound Town Center to a kayak gliding through one of the world’s rarest ecosystems, this coast rewards the curious. Here’s your guide to the life that happens after you shake the sand from your shoes.
WHERE THE MUSIC PLAYS
At Watersound Town Center, the First Friday Concert Series runs from early fall through winter—a free, open-air evening where residents gather at the Pavilion for local and regional acts.
30A Songwriters Festival
Clockwise from above: Festive family fun at Watersound Origins’ Winter Wonderland; Porch Fest pride; the Monarch Art Trail celebrates creativity and nature; Mountainfilm on Tour entertains and inspires.
“Events bring the Watersound community to life by creating opportunities for people to gather, connect, and build lasting relationships,” says Margaret Finnell, Director of Marketing for The St. Joe Company. “They help turn everyday moments into shared experiences and traditions that define the lifestyle here.” Each October, Watersound® Origins Porchfest puts it on the front porch—homeowners volunteer their stoops as stages, and the neighborhood becomes a walkable music festival. It is Finnell’s personal must-not-miss. “It transforms the community into a music-filled experience where front porches become stages and strangers become friends,” she says. In November, Mountainfilm on Tour screens adventure documentaries at WaterColor® Marina Park Amphitheater, and when December arrives, Winter Wonder Watersound fills The Pavilion with Santa, carolers, and cookie decorating. Come January, the 30A Songwriters Festival brings nationally recognized artists to intimate listening rooms along the coast.
ART THAT LIVES HERE
In the Watersound community, the Monarch Art Trail—a mile-long paved path along South Watersound Parkway—features eight sculptures celebrating the monarch butterfly’s migration. Created by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton 20

County, the trail comes alive each fall when monarchs pause on the sculptures themselves. Download the Otocast app for a self-guided audio tour. Gallery hopping is its own art form along 30A. The Shops of Grayton house Mary Hong Studio Gallery, where paint-and-glass creations line the walls. In Blue Mountain Beach, the Justin Gaffrey Gallery showcases his signature sculpted-paint technique. Curate 30A in the Rosemary Beach® community exhibits nationally recognized artists, and just down the road, Allison Wickey’s Art Basha Gallery captures the coastal landscape in layered, antiqued finishes. Chroma, Kathleen Broaderick’s studio on 30A, rounds out the circuit with large-format oils inspired by Northwest Florida. In Panama City, art lovers venture to the Bay Arts Alliance for art exhibits, creative classes, and the annual Flluxe Arts Festival. For a night out that feels like a well-kept secret, SOWAL House—a social club tucked above Barrett Square—hosts live jazz, stand-up comedy, and cabaret nights that reward those in the know. FESTIVALS WORTH PLANNING AROUND
The Seeing Red Wine Festival in Seaside—named one of the top 10 can’t-miss fall wine festivals by Fodor’s—returns November 5-8 for its 34th year, filling Central Square with grand tastings, vintner dinners, and live music. Over in Panama City Beach, Oktoberfest brings German beer and bratwurst to Aaron Bessant Park, and the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ Car Show lines the streets with vintage hot rods. For a lower-key outing, The Hub on 30A offers a central green space ringed by casual restaurants with regular live music— the kind of place where kids can run the lawn while adults settle in.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
South Walton preserves 40 percent of its land as green space, and the crown jewels are its 15 coastal dune lakes—rare bodies of water found in only a handful of places on the planet. Kayak or paddleboard at Deer Lake State Park for some of the most tranquil water you will ever find. beach neighborhoods along Scenic Highway 30A—rent a beach cruiser or an e-bike and cover them all in an afternoon. Eden Gardens State Park, with 163 acres of manicured gardens surrounding a restored historic mansion, is ideal for a few quiet hours away from the crowds. For something altogether different, Arnett’s Gulfside Trail Rides in Santa Rosa Beach offers guided horseback tours through Point Washington State Forest, just a half mile from the Gulf. Lace up your running shoes, and enjoy the fresh air and scenery with Run Watersound 5K & 10K in October and The Seaside School Half Marathon in February.
THE DEEPER DRAW
The Emerald Coast’s beauty starts at the waterline, but the life worth living stretches far inland—through concert pavilions and pine forests, across dune lakes and sculpture trails, around tables loaded with Gulf oysters and local wine. A fall Saturday can start with a detour through a farmers market, and end with live music at Watersound Town Center. That’s not a vacation itinerary. That’s just a regular weekend. And that’s exactly the point.

To Members, it may look like another beautiful morning on perfectly manicured fairways. To Parker, every blade of grass tells a story. As Director of Agronomy, JOSH Parker oversees all 54 PARKER championship holes at the Club, including Shark’s Tooth, The Third, and Camp Creek® golf course, along with the Club’s 10-hole par-three course in the Origins community. His mission sounds straightforward yet is anything but. “Our goal is to bring tournament-like playing conditions to Members every day,” he says. Delivering on that promise requires far more than mowing greens. AT THE AWARD-WINNING Camp Creek® Golf Course, undulating fairways, sand dunes, and native plants are interwoven with manicured turf. Josh Parker (previous page), Directory of Agronomy, ensures the golf landscape is flawless and ready for Members to enjoy.
“People don’t think about the variables—good irrigation, fertilizer, insects, and the impact of golf cart traffic,” he notes. “We are mowing greens at an eighth of an inch. It doesn’t take much stress for that grass to go backward on you.” It is equal parts science, logistics, and leadership. Parker has spent nearly two decades with The St. Joe Company, first as Assistant Golf Superintendent at Camp Creek golf course before leading Shark’s Tooth as Superintendent. Four years ago, he stepped into his current leadership role, overseeing agronomic operations across the Club’s expanding golf portfolio. That portfolio reached another milestone with the opening of The 28

He played an instrumental role in selecting the turfgrass varieties, construction materials, and agronomic systems that will allow the course to perform beautifully for decades while standing up to Northwest Florida’s climate and year-round play. Every decision balanced aesthetics with durability, ensuring pristine conditions without sacrificing long-term sustainability. The philosophy behind The Third mirrors Parker’s own approach to course conditioning. Rather than intimidating golfers, the course was intentionally designed to welcome players of every ability. Multiple teeing options allow the layout to challenge accomplished players while remaining enjoyable for newer golfers—a philosophy Parker helps reinforce through daily course presentation. His role today has evolved far beyond the hands-on responsibilities of a traditional superintendent. “Parker’s role has evolved from the hands-on days of a superintendent to a strategic leadership position,” the original profile notes, “spending more time in the office with a goal of getting out more.” Yet his office is never far from the golf course itself. “I’m fortunate to have three very capable golf course superintendents,” he says. “I give them flexibility. They share their goals, and we talk about ideas and determine a good plan for each course.” That collaborative style has become increasingly important as Watersound Club has grown into one of the Southeast’s premier

private golf destinations. While Members experience each course as distinct, Parker works behind the scenes to ensure they all share the same uncompromising standard of excellence. Few Members will ever notice a preventative irrigation repair completed overnight or the careful adjustments made after heavy rain. They won’t see the hours spent monitoring turf stress or planning seasonal maintenance schedules months in advance. Instead, they’ll remember crisp fairways, true greens, and rounds that unfold exactly as they should. That growing appreciation for the science behind course conditioning has inspired a new way for Members to stay connected to the game they love. Beginning this year, Members receive two additional monthly golf-focused newsletters designed to bring them closer to everything happening on and around the course. Delivered on the first of each month, “The Fairway Report” highlights course conditions, tournaments, instruction, merchandise, and
the latest golf news from across Watersound Club courses. Its companion publication, “The Back Nine Brief”—delivered on the 18th of each month as a nod to golf’s 18 holes—takes Members behind the scenes of the Club’s agronomy operation. Featuring maintenance updates, seasonal practices, current course conditions, ongoing projects, and insights from the agronomy team, the newsletter offers a deeper look at the work that shapes every round. For Members who enjoy understanding the finer points of golf course management, “The Back Nine Brief” provides a straightforward look at the planning, progress, and daily efforts that keep the Watersound Club courses performing at their best. For Parker, that’s the ultimate compliment. Every sunrise inspection, every strategic conversation, and every carefully timed decision contribute to an experience that feels effortless to the people enjoying it. Like the finest championship golf itself, excellence isn’t accidental. It’s cultivated every single day. WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

he view has always been the draw. Perched at the edge of the Beach Club Watersound Club® beach campus, 30°86° looks out over a shimmering pool, past the dunes, and straight into the gin-clear waters of the Gulf. For years, it has been a favorite gathering place for Members—a spot for long lunches, sunset cocktails, and unforgettable evenings by the water. Now, a sweeping renovation is allowing even more Members to enjoy the space in a fresh new way. The transformation of the upstairs began first, and when General Manager Lucas Sneddon arrived in June 2025, he helped continue the vision well beyond it.

“When I came on in June 2025, enhancing the interior also became a top priority.” Sneddon says. “Now we have this secluded space with a private fireplace that adds ambiance to any meal. It feels more intimate. People looking to escape the heat can come in and enjoy time in the air-conditioning.” What followed was a reimagining of nearly every corner of 30°86°—one that preserved the soul of the Beach Club experience while refining it into something more elevated.
A SPACE REBORN
The most obvious change is physical. The Sunset Bar, once oriented lengthwise, has been reshaped into an open horseshoe configuration that draws the eye—and the breeze—directly toward
the water. Seating capacity grew by 100, yet the expansion never feels crowded. Instead, it feels intentional, with every chair angled toward the horizon. Downstairs, a new covered dining area opened the terrace to true al fresco dining. Landscaping shifted to the perimeter, making way for cobalt, cerulean, and cornflowerglazed planters filled with lush tropical foliage and arranged alongside chevron-laid red brick underfoot. Sky blue and white napkin-wrapped silverware settings dot the tables. Inside, a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace anchors the room, flanked by a trio of Gulf landscape paintings in shades of green and gold. Upstairs, what was once primarily a drinks perch has evolved into the most coveted seat in the house. Sleek,

nickel-colored Tropitone furniture—engineered for salt air— replaced quartz-top tables throughout, and soft poolside vignettes offer a more relaxed alternative, with full menu access from every seat. The personal touches matter, too. Rosemary tucked into delicate blue vases comes not from a supplier but from the garden of Club Manager Cori Wheaton. On any given afternoon, the click of mahjong tiles drifts through the space as Members gather for their regular game. These are not accidents. They are the texture of a place that has learned to feel like home.
ELEVATION ON THE PLATE
The culinary vision behind the refreshed 30°86° experience was shaped throughout the renovation process by Chef Jule Theamsuwan, now Executive Chef at Camp Creek® Inn. During her time leading the Beach Club culinary program, Theamsuwan helped guide the evolution of the menus with a focus on elevated coastal dining that felt both approachable and refined.
“We are at the beach,” Theamsuwan says. “Coastal. So, I like lighter food—casual but upscale, with that taste of luxury.” That philosophy appears in a menu that leans into the water’s bounty without sacrificing technique. The catch changes every few days— sometimes snapper, sometimes swordfish or redfish, depending on the morning haul. Grouper arrives whole and is hand-filleted daily. Blue crab cakes are made in-house. Tomatoes in every salad come from a local farm, and when cantaloupe and watermelon come into season, the grower contacts the team directly so the best of the harvest lands on Members’ plates. Standout dishes reflect that balance of lightness and craft. The ahi tuna poke bowl— Theamsuwan’s personal favorite at lunch—delivers clean, full flavor suited to the coastal heat. Firecracker shrimp arrives as a tangle of crispy shrimp over cabbage slaw, finished with sweet chili sauce and scallions—bright,
crunchy, and just hot enough. The Florida cobb salad, dressed in apple cider vinaigrette, was briefly removed from rotation and quickly reinstated after what Sneddon calls protests from loyal Members. And the grouper sandwich—grilled, blackened, or fried—is served on a brioche bun with garlic aioli, crisp lettuce, tomato, and red onion: effortless and exactly right for where you are sitting. For dinner, grilled lobster, airline chicken, and braised short ribs signal this is no ordinary beachside café. The short rib is served over creamy polenta with baby carrots, confit tomato, and crispy leeks, finished with a red wine demi-glace. Desserts are baked in-house; a current favorite is a seasonal parfait of honey lemon cake and lavender mousse. The beverage program received its own overhaul. The former menu offered a single margarita— not nearly enough, Sneddon notes with a laugh. “Everybody wants margaritas by the beach,” he says, “to tap into that Jimmy Buffett lifestyle.” The new cocktail list answers with three distinct offerings. The Rosemary Tabi-Cat pairs gin with fresh rosemary, agave, lime, and soda—herbaceous and bright, with a lift suited to the salt air. The Coco ’Rita blends pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and lime into something unmistakably tropical. And the Caliente Margarita adds fresh jalapeño to a traditional margarita—a slow burn that keeps the glass interesting to the last sip.
THE FEELING THAT STAYS
For Sneddon, who spent two decades in hotel hospitality, the shift to a private club has been a revelation. “I love that every day is different,” he says. “Here, it changes on a daily basis. I love getting to interact with Members and build personal relationships. It really feels like a family.” That warmth—the rosemary from a colleague’s garden, the regulars at the mahjong table, the chef who hones her craft across Watersound Club® properties and brings loyalty to every dish—is what 30°86° truly offers. The water view is spectacular, but it is what happens around the table that turns a meal into a memory.
30°86° is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lunch and 4 to 8 p.m. for dinner.

BEYOND THE PORTFOLIO Why a financial second opinion matters more than ever
A
long Florida’s Gulf Coast, whether it’s mornings on
the water, afternoons on the golf course, or evenings with family and friends, the Watersound lifestyle is built around intentional living. But behind every meaningful lifestyle is a financial plan that supports it—not just today, but for decades to come. Many successful individuals and families assume that if their investments are performing reasonably well, their financial strategy must also be working. Yet in my experience as a private wealth advisor, investment performance is only one piece of a much larger picture. The real question is this: Does your financial plan truly align with the life you want to live? That’s where a second opinion can make all the difference.
SUCCESS CAN CREATE COMPLEXITY
The majority of people I meet are financially responsible, hardworking, and accomplished. They’ve built businesses, advanced
careers, accumulated assets, and made prudent decisions over time. Yet many have not revisited their overall strategy in years. Markets evolve. Tax laws change. Family dynamics shift. Retirement goals become more nuanced. What worked five or 10 years ago may no longer be optimal today. Often, people don’t realize they may have hidden vulnerabilities because nothing appears obviously wrong. In fact, some of the most common issues are surprisingly subtle: • Portfolios carrying more risk than intended • Overconcentration in company stock or real estate • Outdated estate plans • Inefficient tax strategies • Retirement income plans that haven’t been stress-tested • Insurance structures that no longer fit current needs • Multiple accounts spread across institutions with no unified strategy None of these challenges are necessarily catastrophic on their own. But collectively, they can quietly erode long-term wealth and create unnecessary stress.

WEALTH PLANNING IS ABOUT MORE THAN INVESTMENTS
One of the biggest misconceptions about wealth management is that it revolves solely around picking investments. In reality, sophisticated financial planning is deeply interconnected. Investment strategy, tax planning, estate considerations, philanthropy, business succession, retirement income, and legacy goals all influence one another. For example, a portfolio generating strong returns may still be highly tax inefficient. An estate plan drafted years ago may unintentionally create complications for heirs. A retiree withdrawing income from the wrong accounts in the wrong sequence could pay significantly more in taxes over time. The most effective plans are coordinated not fragmented. A second opinion often reveals opportunities clients simply didn’t know existed.
THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF WEALTH
Money is deeply personal. It represents freedom, security, family, opportunity, and legacy. Yet many people avoid financial conversations because they worry they’ll be pressured, criticized, or told they’ve made mistakes. That should never be the experience. A thoughtful advisor approaches a second opinion with curiosity, not judgment. The goal is not to “sell” someone on change. It’s to provide clarity. Sometimes the outcome is reassurance that everything is already on track. Other times, it uncovers meaningful improvements that can strengthen a family’s long-term position. Either way, the conversation creates value.
WHAT AFFLUENT FAMILIES ARE ASKING TODAY
The questions I hear most frequently today are less about chasing returns and more about preserving flexibility and confidence: • “Will my current plan support the lifestyle we envision long term?” • “How exposed am I to future tax increases?”
• “Are we prepared for health care or long-term care costs?” • “What happens if markets experience another major downturn?” • “How do we transfer wealth to children responsibly?” • “Can we simplify our financial life?” These are important questions, and they deserve thoughtful answers. Especially in today’s environment, many investors are realizing they want more than periodic account statements. They want strategic guidance, proactive communication, and a trusted advisor who understands the full scope of their financial life.
WHY TIMING MATTERS
One of the most expensive financial mistakes is waiting too long to evaluate your strategy. The best planning opportunities often exist before a major transition occurs: before retirement, before the sale of a business, before a market correction, before significant tax changes, or before wealth transfers to the next generation. A second opinion isn’t about reacting to a problem. It’s about proactively positioning yourself and your family for the future you want.

The Pursuit of EXCELLENCE Achievements of Watersound Club® Members and staff By CARRIE HONAKER

he morning light barely crests the tree line at the Camp Creek® Amenities when Alexa Guarachi Bruner laces up her sneakers—not for a lesson or a clinic, but for herself—for the game she has chased since she was 5 years old. As the Watersound Club Director of Racquets, Bruner spends her days shaping the tennis and pickleball experience for thousands of Members. But in 2026, she added another chapter to an already extraordinary career: a return to the Hologic WTA Tour, competing on the world stage while continuing to lead the Watersound Club racquet community she loves. Hers is not a solitary pursuit. Across the Watersound Club community—on tournament courts, fairways, and club facilities— Members and staff alike are chasing excellence, winning gold medals, hosting collegiate championships, and earning recognition that reaches far beyond the Florida Panhandle.

BACK ON TOUR
Bruner’s tennis story began with two teaching-professional parents as her earliest coaches. She rose to a top 50 junior world ranking, earned three All-American titles at the University of Alabama, and then turned professional—eventually reaching a career-high doubles ranking of No. 11 in the world. Her résumé includes a French Open finalist appearance in 2020, a US Open semifinal in 2021, a Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2022, five WTA Tour titles, and a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games. Among her most treasured memories is stepping onto Centre Court at Wimbledon to play mixed doubles opposite Serena Williams and Andy Murray. After her child’s birth, Bruner applied for—and received— the WTA’s Special Ranking, a designation that allows players returning from pregnancy to reenter tour-level competition. She has used it to build a full 2026 schedule, opening her season at the ATX Open in Austin alongside Emily Appleton, where the pair advanced to the quarterfinals with a crisp 6–4, 6–4 victory. She followed that run with a stop at the Credit One Charleston Open, competing alongside Sofia Kenin against a

premier international field. London, Toronto, and New York still await. For Bruner, the journey back to tour play has been inseparable from the warmth of the Watersound Club community surrounding her. “Many have known about my background, my journey, and what I was going to be doing this year, and they’ve been nothing but positive. I think they really like being able to follow it. It brings a sense of camaraderie. We have 3,000 Members, and it makes it feel even smaller—a truly unique, family-like feeling,” says Bruner. Visit Watersoundclub.com/ alexas-wta-journey online to follow Alexa’s WTA journey.
STAFF EXCELLENCE, ON AND OFF THE COURT
The pursuit of excellence is equally evident among Watersound Club staff members, many of whom continue to compete and achieve at the highest levels of their professions. Wojtek Bratek, Head Tennis Professional at Shark’s Tooth, recently earned a runner-up finish in both men’s singles and doubles at the Men’s 45s Clay Court National Championships in Fort Lauderdale—a performance that reflects the caliber of instruction Members experience every day on the courts. In golf, Senior Golf Instructor David Hanson recently qualified as one of just four professionals from the Alabama–Northwest Florida PGA Section to compete in the PGA Professionals Championship at Bandon Dunes. Across rounds at both Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes, Hanson carded four birdies, including an impressive 74 at Pacific Dunes while hitting 11 of 13 fairways. Meanwhile, Sporting Preserve General Manager Mike Abbott has enjoyed an exceptional competitive season, capturing first place in each of his last five National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) tournaments and earning seven first-place finishes across multiple NSCA events in 2026. Highlights include victories in
A CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD— RIGHT HERE AT HOME
While Bruner has been competing around the world, Shark’s Tooth has hosted some of the finest collegiate golf in the country. This spring, the Greg Norman–designed course served as the site of the ACC Golf Championships—a field of 15 teams, nearly half of them ranked in the national top 40, competing across several days of stroke play before a match-play bracket narrowed the field to a championship pairing of No. 2-ranked Virginia and Stanford. “We’re very fortunate to have them here and showcase the Club and, more specifically, Shark’s Tooth,” says Greg Flannagan, Director of Golf. “Virginia has one of the top amateurs in the world on its team—Ben James, ranked No. 2 in the world amateur rankings. Just a great field.” The course held up its end of the bargain. Players from programs spanning the East and West Coasts described Shark’s Tooth as both demanding and fair—a combination that defines a worthy championship venue. “The greens are outstanding.
44
FALL/WINTER 2026
The ball is rolling tremendously,” Flannagan notes. “When the course tests their skills—that’s exactly what you want.” The ACC Championship— co-hosted by Florida State and Alabama—drew a field that included Ole Miss, fresh off its SEC Championship. Flannagan notes the ACC rotates venues on a fourto-five-year cycle, keeping the door
open for future hosting opportunities at the Club. For the staff, the event carries an excitement that extends well beyond tournament week. “Only time will tell,” Flannagan says, “but when a future PGA Tour player wins someday, and we can say, ‘Three years ago, they were right here on this hole at Shark’s Tooth,’ that’s something that makes the long days short.”

That competitive spirit extends well beyond Club-hosted events. Watersound Club Members have continued to make their mark nationally in team competitions. At the 2026 Franklin U.S. Open Pickleball Championships, Members earned an impressive collection of podium finishes. Kelly Coleman captured first place in Ladies 5.0 competition, while Jonathan Clark earned gold in Men’s 5.0 Doubles. Kelly Coleman and Barry Pelts teamed up for a third-place finish in Mixed Doubles, while John Olinger and Barry Pelts claimed first place in the Men’s 5.0 Division. Success continued during the 2026 Florida Pickleball League season. The Dinking Divas Ladies 2.5 (14+) team earned State and Division Championship titles, while the Net Results Men’s 3.5 (50+) team captured first-place State Champion honors and secured their place among the top teams in the region.

the Main Event, True Pair, and Super Sporting competitions at tournaments in Pensacola and Milton, Florida. His standout performances have earned him a coveted spot at the NSCA SouthCentral Regional Championship, which will be held in Jackson, Mississippi, this October. These accomplishments join an already decorated roster of staff achievements, including Director of Instruction Ben Blalock’s PGA Master Professional designation and multiple regional teaching honors.
Perhaps the most promising signal of a club’s culture is the talent it nurtures in its youngest Members. Several Watersound Club junior golfers have recently committed to compete at the collegiate level: Ava Kight at Southern Miss, Jack Cook at the College of Charleston, Lily Matin at the University of North Florida, and Scarlett Schremmer at the University of Miami. Neely Kight also is poised to join their ranks, with a college commitment on the horizon. From a WTA Tour court in Austin to the fairways of Shark’s Tooth—from a U.S. Open pickleball podium to a college signing day—the Watersound Club community is defined not just by its surroundings but by the people within it. The pursuit of excellence, it turns out, is a shared one. WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

The main difference, of course, is that you’re aiming for birds not balls. Designed to simulate duck and bird hunting, sporting clay players use a shotgun to hit moving clay bird targets that come from various directions and heights. While similar to the repetition games of skeet and trap, the variety in direction and height in sporting clays adds a layer of difficulty and surprise.

RULES OF THE GAME
Watersound Club Sporting Preserve General Manager Mike Abbott says three simple rules can make or break your sporting clays experience:
1. POINT— DON’T AIM.
Look at the target, not the bead. Treat the gun like an extension of your eyes; it will shoot where you look.
Members gather at the Preserve for an outdoor gaming adventure and receive expert instruction and safety tips amid the natural beauty of the landscape.
“We set the stations up so that we have some that are hard, some that are easy, and some that are in the middle,” says Mike Abbott, General Manager at the Sporting Preserve. “My philosophy is that it’s no fun if you can’t hit anything, and it’s no fun if you hit everything.” The game is set up on a field or course made up of several stations—15 at the Watersound Club Sporting Preserve and each with a different presentation of clays, which are referred to as birds. There are two spring-loaded traps, or throwers, at each station that change direction weekly to provide a dynamic shooting experience. Each station offers a different throw presentation to mimic real bird flight. Some stations are presented as gimmicks, which present an increased difficulty. The trapper, akin to a caddy in golf, will accompany you at your station, pushing the button when you call “pull,” triggering the clay birds to fly from the trap. The bird’s trajectory is determined based on the flight patterns of game birds, and different directionals are referred to as such. A teal shot, for example, mimics the flight of a green-winged teal duck.
Abbott suggests starting with singles, which is one bird shot from one trap at a time. Once you get that down, you can move to shooting a report pair, which is one bird followed immediately by a second, and then a true pair, which is two birds thrown at the same time. If you’re looking to gain some background knowledge on the sport before playing, Abbott suggests going straight to the source. “All instructors across the country adhere to the National Sporting Clays Association NCSA—that’s the gold standard,” he says. “So, if you want to get a head start before you come out to see what the game is like, I would refer back to that organization.” The Watersound Club Sporting Preserve also offers one-on-one lessons and group clinics, which can be very useful for beginners looking to enter the sport beyond a single visit. When you arrive for your day of clays, Abbott WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

2. KEEP YOUR CHEEK ON THE STOCK.
Once you mount the gun, keep your face anchored to avoid the gun jumping and causing soreness over repeated shots.
3. MOUNT IN THE SHOULDER POCKET.
Placing the butt of the gun correctly prevents bruising from recoil throughout the day.

CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER
Abbott compares selecting a shotgun to choosing the right golf club—each has advantages. Rentals are available at the Sporting Preserve.
SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN and his team will offer a safety briefing before performing a brief and informal eye and hand dominance test. “It is fun, and we try to make it as fun as possible, but you are dealing with firearms,” Abbott says. “So, we have to be sure that everybody understands some basic ground rules.” The most important safety rules at the Sporting Preserve, Abbott says, are to keep your gun open and your finger off the trigger. “We have a rule, ‘If your feet are moving,’ we say, ‘the gun is open,’” Abbott notes, referring to the over-under shotguns, which can be opened to show whether the gun is loaded. “That’s the only way I know that gun is safe.” Other safety points covered include how to mount the gun and how to comfortably shoot to prevent shoulder or cheek bruising. With Abbott and his team on hand, safety measures remain seamlessly implemented, leaving players comfortable to take aim. And as the Sporting Preserve continues to expand its programming to keep Members challenged and engaged,

the excitement only grows. This past November, the team hosted its inaugural tournament—a milestone event that drew enthusiastic competitors and awarded standout prizes, including a competitionlevel pistol for the top shooter. It’s just one example of how the Sporting Preserve is evolving into a premier destination for skill, camaraderie, and unforgettable outdoor experiences— inviting Members to step in, take aim, and be part of what’s next.
ADVANTAGE: Lightweight, less recoil, and typically less expensive. DISADVANTAGE: One barrel with a middleground choke.
OVER-UNDER SHOTGUN ADVANTAGE: A classic choice offering two chokes—wide on the bottom and tighter on top— for varying clay distances and heights. DISADVANTAGE: Slightly heavier than a semi-automatic.
FINDING THE SPORTING PRESERVE The Watersound Club Sporting Preserve sits just past The Third Golf Course, north of Shark’s Tooth Golf Course. irearms occupy a unique space among personal possessions—part tool, part investment, and often part legacy. Yet despite their significance and often substantial value, many are under appraised and underinsured. Understanding how to properly assess and protect them is an essential part of responsible ownership. 54
FALL/WINTER 2026
THE VALUE EQUATION
Unlike jewelry or art, firearms sit in a highly specialized and sometimes volatile market. Value depends on the manufacturer, rarity, condition, provenance, and even politics. A well-preserved World War II–era rifle, for example, can be worth $1,200 or $6,000, depending on originality and documentation. That level of nuance means a general property appraiser may not be qualified to evaluate firearms Hank Yacek is the accurately. or an entire collection, on-site or at your location, starting as low as $20 per firearm. Each appraisal includes a detailed explanation of every item, so owners can stay fully informed of their collection’s value. Experts recommend revisiting appraisals every three to five years or after major market changes.
PAPERWORK AND PROVENANCE
Documentation drives value. Factory letters, sales receipts, import papers, and photos of serial numbers can all substantiate authenticity. Collectors should maintain digital archives, including appraisals and certificates, stored securely in the cloud. Good records not only make appraisals easier but also streamline insurance claims and estate transfers.
INSURANCE GAPS AND OPTIONS
Many owners assume homeowner’s insurance provides sufficient coverage, but most policies limit firearm reimbursement to just a few thousand dollars. That might not cover even one high-end rifle.
Specialized firearm insurance, or a dedicated policy rider, is a better solution. These policies typically allow for individually itemized appraisals and full coverage for theft, fire, flood, or accidental damage. Some even cover firearms in transit to competitions or exhibits. When selecting coverage, understand the difference between “replacement value” (what it would cost to buy a similar firearm today) and “fair market value” (what it might sell for privately). Insurance generally uses replacement value, while estate planning relies on fair market value.
RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP
Firearms are more than possessions— they’re history in steel and wood. Protecting them properly through documentation, regular appraisals, and adequate insurance honors both their financial and cultural worth. In the end, responsible ownership means ensuring that the collection you treasure today is safeguarded for tomorrow.

t’s March 7, and opening artist Casey Kearney has just taken the stage for the 2026 Rhythm on the Range, the iconic Watersound Club® country music concert that transforms the Camp Creek® driving range into a sprawling open-air arena. As the first note wafts through the evening air, Vicki Burris and Cameron Fish can finally relax. A year of meticulous preparation that built to a nonstop crescendo over the past few weeks, days, and hours is behind them, although Burris is already thinking about finalizing the 2027 headliner. The annual March concert, exclusive to 3,000 Club Members and guests at Camp Creek ® Inn and Watersound Inn® resorts, marked the third installment of what has quickly become a beloved coastal tradition. It featured platinum recordselling musician Brett Young, known for his

“Caliville” style and seven consecutive No. 1 singles. For Burris, the event is a testament to the Club’s meteoric journey. Since she joined the team in 2020, membership has surged. Rhythm on the Range was born from a desire to celebrate that growth. “This is our way to thank Members for being part of the Club,” she says. “Our Members love the combination of being outside in the beautiful spring weather, enjoying the company of their 3,000 closest friends, and experiencing live country music in an intimate, familiar setting.” Originating in 2024, the signature family-friendly concert has blossomed into one of the Club’s most anticipated annual events. “Members bring lawn chairs and coolers, and we also have food trucks,” Burris says. “It’s a casual, fun setting.”
The 2026 concert, which included an onstage proposal, was Fish’s first foray as Club Events Manager. “It was hard to imagine at first,” she admits. “To see a driving range, visualize a massive stage, and thousands of people out there— it’s incredible.” The planning process is a monthslong study in logistics, moving from high-level talent scouting to converting a premier golf facility into a concert venue. It begins with the headliner. “I get very nervous if we haven’t secured next year’s artist within a week of Rhythm on the Range,” Burris notes. Fortunately, the strategy behind booking superstar talent is uniquely organic. Because the Florida Panhandle is a drive market for Nashville’s elite, many artists already frequent the area for songwriting

sessions, festivals, or vacations. Many are also familiar with Rhythm on the Range through word of mouth. “Our artists have conversations with their buddies about performing here, and musicians now come to us,” Burris explains. “It’s exciting we have that type of reputation; people in Nashville are talking about us. They like the size of the show.” For the artists, the appeal is the “unplugged” feel of an intimate venue, a refreshing departure from an anonymous arena tour. Headliners often bring their families, mingle with the crowd, and sign autographs. “They are down to earth and excited about the Club,” Burris says, noting five lucky Members were chosen to meet Young this year—a surprise element that keeps the tradition fresh. Young, along with previous headliners Thomas Rhett and Russell Dickerson, are Watersound Club Members. By late April, the headlining act for the 2027 Rhythm on the Range is confirmed—a secret Burris will closely guard until the official announcement in December. “So many Members will stop me and ask me to give them hints,” she says. “I’m not the greatest at keeping secrets, but this is always a fun one to keep. We announce the musician via email and social media with a fun video from the artist.” Long before the grand reveal, Burris, Fish, and team members are coordinating details. Once the artist signs, they schedule with the out-ofstate stage company, which will erect and tear down the massive stage in only 24 hours. “In November and December, we start talking about opening acts, food, and experiences for Members,” says Fish, who was frequently in touch with tour managers, arranged food and beverage for the artists, and helped scout local talent. “It is important to us to include local acts as openers,” says Burris. “It’s a huge opportunity for them to share a green room with the stars, get their advice, and take photos.” Sammi Accola, Jared Herzog, and Kearney are among those artists. As the concert approaches, the operational scale shifts into overdrive.

Members gather for an unforgettable evening of live music by country stars like Brett Young (opener), coupled with community and celebration under the stars.
This year’s event also involved orchestrating trolleys for off-site parking for 3,000 guests. The membership office becomes a hub of activity as staff design T-shirts, coordinate security, EMS, fire, and permitting, and arrange tour bus parking. Members pick up their wristbands the week before the concert, with the featured artist’s music playing in the background. The team also monitors the weather for the rain-or-shine event. The physical transformation from driving range to center stage is a sprint. The stage and professional AV equipment arrive the morning before. As the stage takes shape, a festival-like setting with food trucks, a cocktail bar, and a photo booth begins to emerge. There is a tangible electricity in the air as Members arrive the next morning to drop off their lawn chairs. “We actually have a countdown, and it is so funny to watch the Members run to the front of the stage to secure their spots,” says Burris. “There’s an empty field, and suddenly thousands of blue folding chairs.” Once the first chord is struck, Burris and Fish’s roles shift from event producers to concertgoers. “The moment we can sit down and relax is when the first artist gets on stage,” says Burris. “It’s a good feeling, and everyone is smiling the next day.” “The whole day was so fun,” adds Fish. “I spent the day running around doing little things, making sure the artists were happy. Brett put on such a good show. It was a beautiful night with a great ambiance, and the Members loved it.” After the final encore fades into the coastal night, crews tear down the equipment and stage, ensuring the range is open the next morning. And Burris is already thinking about that next artist. WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

MAHJONG How a group of women turned a centuries-old game into a welcoming social movement By ZANDRA WOLFGRAM
72
FALL/WINTER 2026
Magic
O
n any given morning across the Watersound Club® properties, you might hear it before you see it—the rhythmic clack of tile against tile, part strategy, part soundtrack, now a familiar sound across the Club. Follow it, and you’ll find them: four women gathered around a table, leaning in, laughing, fully present. Stay a while, and it becomes clear—this isn’t just a game. It’s a movement. Mahjong, the centuries-old Chinese tile game traditionally played by four, has quietly transformed from a little-known pastime into one of the most dynamic social forces at the Club. What began in the spring of 2025 with just four women has grown into a thriving network of more than 150 players, with standing weekly games, themed events, and even a wave of entrepreneurship sparked along the way. “I would call mahjong a social phenomenon,” says Tracy Moore, a longtime Member and natural
connector. “We started with four people, and within weeks, it became something entirely different.” Moore remembers the moment it shifted. After an early game, the group wandered together to a golf gathering at Camp Creek ® Inn, settling in for lunch and lingering conversation. “That’s when it changed,” she says. “It went from just playing tiles to becoming friends.” That shift—from game to gathering—has defined mahjong at the Club ever since. Unlike card games, mahjong is played with a set of beautifully detailed tiles—traditionally carved from bamboo and ivory, today more often crafted from durable resin or acrylic. Each tile is engraved and often hand-painted with symbolic imagery—bamboo, circles, characters, winds, and dragons—creating a tactile, visual experience as well as a strategic one. At the Club, mahjong is as much about style as strategy. Players bring their own sets—sleek, handpainted tiles in modern palettes, some featuring delicate florals

or chinoiserie-inspired motifs— paired with coordinated mats and racks that transform each game into a curated tablescape. “It’s something you can make your own,” says Club Events Manager Cameron Fish. “Some tables are quiet and focused; others are lively and social, but everyone feels welcome.” That accessibility is part of the appeal. While mahjong involves building winning hands through pattern recognition, memory,
and a bit of luck, the learning curve is softened by the group’s inclusive spirit. “It is welcoming to all levels,” Moore says. “Beginners sit right alongside experienced players. You come for the tiles, but you leave with the friends.” For many Members, that sense of connection has been transformative. “We’ve been Members since 2011, and I’ve made friends over the years,” Moore says. “But
I would call mahjong a social phenomenon. We started with four people, and within weeks, it became something entirely different.” — TRACY MOORE, Member
this is different. Now I have more friends at the beach than I do in my hometown. We’ve shared everything—celebrations, challenges, even loss. It’s a true community.” In a community where many residents split time between homes, mahjong offers something rare: continuity.

“There’s nothing else at the Club quite like it,” Moore explains. “You don’t have to sign up. You just show up. And when you’re ready, the table is there.” Today, those tables are everywhere. Players gather regularly at Camp Creek® Inn—Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—with additional games unfolding organically across Shark’s Tooth Clubhouse, the Beach Club, and beyond. Indoors or out, on terraces or patios, wherever four chairs can be pulled together, mahjong follows. Yes, even in the pool. “We absolutely play in the pool,” Moore says with a laugh. “Floating mats, floating tiles—we have it all. We’ll sit there for hours.” As the group grew, so did the energy around it. What began as casual social play evolved
74

into monthly themed events—think “Mahjong and Margaritas,” “Love Is in the Tiles,” and anniversary celebrations complete with custom cookies, signature cocktails, and coordinated attire. “The demand grew almost overnight,” Fish says. “We started with a designated space for social play, and now we’re producing full events. It’s become something Members genuinely look forward to.” But beyond the laughter and lively tablescapes, mahjong has created something deeper: purpose. From fundraising events supporting local health initiatives to food and gift card drives benefiting the broader community,
the mahjong group has extended its reach well beyond the table. “We’re not just a social group,” Moore says. “We’re a compassionate group. We care for each other, and we care for our community.” And then, there’s the unexpected ripple effect: business. “What’s been incredible is what’s grown out of this,” Moore says. “We now have three local businesses that started right here from this group.” Among them is a designforward tile company, a business specializing in custom and floating mahjong sets, and a new mahjong studio on Scenic Highway

Some tables are competitive, others purely social. Some players come for the strategy, others for the camaraderie, and many for both. “We have every type of player,” Moore says. “The fast players, the social players, the serious ones, the ones who just want
to enjoy a glass of wine. We welcome everyone.” That range has made mahjong uniquely cross-generational. Mothers and daughters play together. Friends bring neighbors. New Members find an instant way in. “Women need connection,” Moore says simply. “And Mahjong provides that in such a natural way.” Back at Camp Creek® Inn, another game is underway. Tiles click. A new player pulls up a chair. Someone offers a quick explanation, a warm welcome. The game begins again. And with it, another friendship.

The Choreographer How Sonya Livingston Smith brings a Rockette’s precision to creating unforgettable Member moments By NANCI THEORET
SONYA LIVINGSTON SMITH

very memorable Member experience begins with someone who understands that the smallest details often leave the biggest impression. At Camp Creek® Inn, that someone is Sonya Livingston Smith. Whether she is arranging an unforgettable alligator hunt for an adventurous Member, recommending a favorite local restaurant, or surprising an anniversary couple with a handwritten note and thoughtful gift, Smith approaches every interaction with the same philosophy that guided her through a remarkable 21-year career with the world-famous Radio City Rockettes. Perfection is not accidental. It is carefully choreographed. As concierge at Camp Creek Inn, Smith is often the first person Members and guests encounter upon arrival. Long before luggage reaches a guest room, she is already thinking several steps ahead, anticipating needs and crafting

personalized experiences that transform a stay into a lasting memory. “I’ve been in hospitality my whole life,” says Smith, whose parents owned longtime restaurants in Dothan, Alabama, and Tallahassee. “My mom and dad never met a stranger. They always welcomed everyone like they’d known them all their lives.” That spirit of hospitality was nurtured at home but refined on one of the world’s biggest stages. At just 16, Smith left her small-town roots for New York City, where she fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a Radio City Rockette. While audiences remember the synchronized kick line, Smith remembers something different—the preparation. On tour, she served as the troupe’s unofficial travel agent and concierge, scouting out restaurants and must-try experiences in each new city. “This was pre-internet,” she recalls. “I always looked for something different and new.” Toward the end of her 21-year Rockette career, Smith became choreographer and dance captain of the Las Vegas show, a role requiring meticulousness, focus, and coordination with legendary guest artists like Liberace and Liza Minnelli. “I always loved the rehearsal process because it’s the most collaborative and creative,” she says. “When you work for the Rockettes, which is known for precision dance, attention to detail is highly critical. Everything has to be exactly right—every arm, every leg, every kick. You become attuned to the details. That’s exactly what customer service and hospitality are.” Today, those lessons play out in a very different setting, but the mindset remains remarkably familiar. Instead of directing dancers, Smith orchestrates Member experiences. Every recommendation, itinerary, welcome gift, and handwritten note is thoughtfully considered. Whether helping a family discover a new adventure, planning a special celebration, or finding just the right hidden gem along the Emerald Coast, she believes every interaction should feel personal. “Every guest has a story, and everyone comes here for different reasons,” she notes. “My job is to listen and to be a positive part of their day.”

That commitment to excellence extends beyond the concierge desk. In May, Smith graduated summa cum laude from Florida State University–Panama City with a degree in professional communication, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth. Even after an accomplished performing career, she continues investing in the skills that help her better serve others. Like choreography, exceptional hospitality depends on countless details working together seamlessly. Guests rarely see the preparation behind every recommendation, reservation, or thoughtful surprise. They simply remember how the experience made them feel. For Smith, that is the true measure of success. Every interaction is an opportunity to create joy, ease a traveler’s day, or help a family make memories together. The luxury of the Watersound Club® experience is found not only in beautiful accommodations and world-class amenities but also in genuine human connection. After decades spent ensuring every performance unfolded flawlessly beneath the bright lights of New York and Las Vegas, Smith now brings that same discipline, creativity, and grace to Camp Creek Inn. Her stage may have changed, but her purpose has not. Every day, she helps transform ordinary visits into extraordinary memories—one perfectly choreographed moment at a time.
From Top: The ladies of The Breathless Twelve, a sub-group of the Rockette Alumnae Association, perform for charitable causes throughout the year. At age 16, Smith began her 21-year career with the world-famous Radio City Rockettes.

THE PROS Consistency is key
C
By BEN BLALOCK
onsistency is the No. 1 request that I receive from students. This is true here locally, and I’d say it’s No. 1 over the course of my career in full. I don’t think this will change anytime soon. Golf is hard. Please take a moment to think for a few minutes about what it means to be “more consistent.” What does it really mean? I think that what we’re saying with this comment is that we want to hit a good shot—every time. That’s all, no big deal. Who doesn’t want that? So, where do we start?
82
FALL/WINTER 2026
084_WCLUB_FW_GolfTips.indd 82
I always counter the comment by asking the student, “Do you think it’s possible for a person to be consistent if that person isn’t capable of executing what they can imagine?” I don’t believe so. Before we can be consistent, we must be able to produce the desired results—in practice and on the course—on the first try. This sounds tougher, doesn’t it? It’s not impossible, but there’s more to it than just wishing it would happen. Now that things are settled into a better perspective, we can roll up our sleeves and get to work. What’s necessary for a player to be truly capable of achieving consistency? A good working knowledge of cause-and-effect relationships within the golf swing. You don’t need to know every single detail, but you need to know the basics:

ADEQUATE PRACTICE TIME
Ben Blalock is the Director of Golf Instruction and a PGA Master Professional. Book with him today by calling the Performance Center at (850) 231-7606 or emailing him directly at ben.blalock@stjoe.com.
How to improve faulty contact. How to improve poor distance. How to improve direction control problems.
Can you find a few hours per week to commit to coming to the practice area and working on your game? Are you going to come out in the mornings? Lunchtime? Late afternoon? Whatever you decide, put it on your calendar and stick to your plan. Will you come to the practice area with a plan, or will you just “wing it”? Obviously, one of these makes sense, and the other won’t get you very far toward achieving your goal. What is your goal for that day’s practice? Is it quantifiable? Example 1: If you’re having contact problems, can you hit the ball before the ground five times in a row? This is a quantifiable goal. Example 2: You’re not happy with your distance. Choose a target on the range that requires you to stretch your distance—nothing outrageous, but something just out of reach for an average swing but doable with something better than your average. Now, can you achieve the distance goal on three straight shots? There’s another quantifiable goal. Where have you set the level of expectation for yourself? Being realistic here is a real requirement. One thing that I catch myself saying during lessons to folks is that there are only a few “bad words” that can be said in a golf lesson: Should/ Shouldn’t
O ught to/ Ought not to
Supposed to/Not supposed to
Textbook Standard O rthodox
People use these terms all the time to describe their swing/shot/game and only end up degrading their own performance and eroding their own confidence. Nobody is perfect, and even the best swings have flaws. What’s good for one player may not be helpful for another, so be careful
what you choose to try out. It’s only worth trying if it matches your needs; otherwise, it’s not for you! Are you just frustrated with your results, or are you an active observer of what’s happening? This can be answered with a thought: The last time you practiced, did someone ask you how it went? If so, and you answered something like “bad” or “disappointing,” I get it. Maybe you didn’t want to waste that person’s time with a long description. Once you’re alone again with your thoughts about your practice, try to assemble and organize the experience. Were there any patterns? Topping, chunking, slicing, hooking, hitting it low, etc. Pattern recognition is important, so record these patterns and look back over them at the end of your week of practice. This will give you a “road map” to use over time. You just might find that you’re more consistent than you thought, and that capability might be the thing that’s missing! If that proves to be true, we’re here at the Performance Center every day but Monday to help you build the plan you need to increase your capability and consistency. Should you decide to seek help, we’ll guide you through your journey, and your notes will give us the answers we need to nudge you in the right direction. This can be through technique suggestions, drills, or specific practice plans that will enhance your skill set and raise your level of play. We use technology to quantify your capabilities and identify the greatest weaknesses, but ultimately, it’s a team decision. What do we think, collectively—student and teacher—will best improve your results? Once we have measured and we can make a definitive decision, things get underway. We’re excited that you’re playing golf and growing within the game. If there’s ever anything we can do to help, please reach out to me at ben.blalock@stjoe. com or (850) 231-7606.

TIPS FROM
THE PROS Winning more doubles matches
D
By TOBY FASTH
oubles is one of the most fun and rewarding ways to play tennis. It’s social, fast-paced, and a great way to compete with friends. While singles is about managing your own side of the court, doubles is all about teamwork, communication, and smart positioning. You don’t have to hit the biggest serve or hardest forehand to be successful; often, the best doubles teams are simply the ones that work together the best. Here are my top tips for improving your doubles game and winning more matches.

7. NEVER BLAME YOUR PARTNER
Body language matters. Keep your head up, stay encouraging, and avoid negative reactions. A confident, supportive team always has a better chance to compete well under pressure.
8. NEVER GIVE UP
Doubles matches can turn quickly. One break, one hold, or one big point can shift momentum completely. Keep competing no matter the score.
9. PLAY THE WEAKER PARTNER ON BIG POINTS
When the score gets tight, be smart with strategy. If one opponent is less consistent or less comfortable under pressure, make them play the key shots.
10. STAY ALERT AND MOVE FORWARD 1. TALK TO YOUR PARTNER
Communication is one of the biggest keys in doubles. Before the point, talk about where you want to serve or return, or whether someone plans to poach. During the point, use simple calls like “mine,” “switch,” or “bounce it.” After the point, check in quickly and keep the energy positive.
4. YOU WIN AND LOSE AS A TEAM
Stay supportive throughout the match. Everyone misses shots, and negativity can hurt a team quickly. Encourage your partner, reset after mistakes, and remember you’re in it together from the first point to the last.
2. MOVE AS A UNIT
5. RETURN CROSSCOURT MOST OF THE TIME
3. BE AGGRESSIVE AND LOOK TO FINISH AT THE NET
6. HAVE A PLAN WHEN POACHING
Strong doubles teams move together. If your partner moves forward, be ready to move with them. If they get pulled wide, slide over and help cover the open court. Think of it like being connected by a rope—when one player moves, the other should react.
Doubles rewards players who take control of the net. Look for chances to move forward, cut off angles, and finish points with volleys or overheads. You don’t always need to hit a winner; pressure alone can force mistakes.
Be ready at all times. Stay light on your toes, racquet up, and ready to react. After your serve or return, look for opportunities to move forward and take control of the point early. Most importantly, enjoy the game. Great doubles is about teamwork, energy, and having fun competing together. I look forward to seeing you on the courts soon.
A good rule of thumb is that about 80% of returns should go crosscourt unless the alley is clearly open. The net is lower in the middle, the court is longer, and you have more margin for error. It’s the highest percentage return in doubles.
Poaching can change a match, but it should be done with purpose. Watch your opponent’s court position when they return. If they’re off balance or leaning one direction, that may be the right moment to move and intercept.
