SCHOLARSHIPS
At St George’s, our Scholarships recognise pupils with exceptional potential, commitment and enthusiasm.
Scholarships are designed to nurture individuals who will make the most of every opportunity, contribute positively to school life and inspire those around them. Becoming a Scholar is an invitation to join a community of ambitious, curious and motivated young people who are encouraged to flourish both inside and beyond the classroom.
Academic Scholarships
Academic Scholarships are awarded to pupils who demonstrate exceptional academic ability across several subjects and who show evidence of all round academic excellence. This is assessed solely through our entrance assessment process at 11+ and by supplementary papers at 13+. There is no separate application for an Academic Scholarship.
Successful candidates show intellectual curiosity, strong analytical skills and the potential to thrive within our academically ambitious environment.
Specialist Scholarships
Each Scholarship is awarded following an assessment process appropriate to the discipline, as detailed in this booklet. Scholars benefit from an enhanced programme of opportunities, which may include specialist coaching, masterclasses, mentoring, performance or competition opportunities, leadership experiences and
access to enrichment activities designed to help them fulfil their potential.
Pupils awarded scholarships at 11+ and 13+ will remain scholars into the Sixth Form subject to maintaining their level of performance and consistently contributing to School life in the particular area of their award, in accordance with our Scholarship terms and conditions.
Financial Support
Scholarships may be accompanied by a modest fee remission in recognition of exceptional talent and the added-value that they are expected to bring to the School. The primary purpose of a Scholarship, however, is to provide recognition, challenge and opportunities for personal growth.
Families requiring financial assistance are encouraged to apply separately for a means-tested Bursary, which is assessed independently of the Scholarship process.

ART SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Awarded to a pupil who shows flair and enthusiasm for Art. They are expected to make a strong contribution to the artistic life of the School and to act as a positive role model for other pupils.
Scholarship requirements
• Informal interview with members of the Art Department in which candidates will be expected to discuss their own work as well as the work of other artists.
• A drawing test. Applicants will draw from direct observation. A range of materials will be made available and it is expected that candidates will be able to demonstrate how they record what they see. The best preparation for this is to practise observational drawing.
• Candidates should submit a portfolio of 10 to 15 pieces of work maximum, some of which should demonstrate independent study. It is very important that the work is made from a desire to make art rather than a need for a scholarship portfolio.
There should be evidence of work in a variety of media, including threedimensional pieces, which should be photographed.
• Candidates should bring a sketchbook demonstrating ability to record from observation to their interview.
• Continued study of at least one curriculum Art subject (Art, Photography, Textiles) is a requirement for Scholarship retention.

Swimming
DRAMA SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Awarded to a pupil who shows exceptional ability and promise in drama. They are expected to take a leading part in the dramatic life of the School and to act as a positive role model for other pupils.
Scholarship requirements
• 11+ and 13+ applicants will be invited to prepare one monologue from a full published play script only, lasting between 2-3 minutes and performed for the Director of Drama. Excellent vocal and physical skills and an understanding of the text should be exhibited.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in a drama workshop. No preparation for this is required. They will also have an interview with the Director of Drama.
• Significant contribution to the dramatic life of the School is required for this Scholarship, including involvement in School productions.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Awarded to a pupil who shows flair and enthusiasm for music. They are expected to take a leading part in the musical life of the School and act as a positive role model for other pupils.
Scholarship requirements
• 11+ and 13+ applicants will be invited to submit a pre-recorded audition where they will be expected to perform one piece of music (instrument or voice), lasting no longer than five minutes. They may also choose to record a second piece on a different instrument or voice if appropriate.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an audition day that will include an interview with the Director of Music, a sight reading and aural test, along with a live performance. Vocalists may be invited to join in with a singing workshop.
• 11+ and 13+ applicants should be around Grade 3 or above in ability on at least one instrument (which can include voice).
• Music scholars at St George’s follow a tailored programme of activities that supports their musical development, and includes ensemble leadership opportunities, trips, scholar’s showcases and enrichment activities such as a recording experience day and film composition workshop.
• Significant contribution to the musical life of the School is a requirement for Scholarship retention, including performing in concerts and events as well as involvement in ensembles (as relevant).

PERFORMANCE SWIMMING SCHOLARSHIP
INFORMATION
Our Performance Swimming Scholarship is awarded to pupils who demonstrate exceptional ability and dedication in swimming.
Successful candidates will join our thriving Performance Swimming Programme, benefiting from expert coaching, 8-10 hours of pool time and 1 hour of Strength and Conditioning per week, and the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level.
Scholarship requirements
• A written reference should be provided by a club coach to evidence the highest level of performance the candidate is working at (such as club, county or regional) and their current capabilities and achievements within swimming, as well as their capacity and potential to progress. These should be sent with the completed application form by the deadline.
• Candidates will be invited to attend a specific Performance Swimming Assessment Day at the School, in which they will undertake a pool assessment with the Performance Swimming Coach and the Head of Swimming. All Scholarship assessments also involve a fitness, strength and movement competency assessment with our Scholar Strength and Conditioning Coach, as well as an interview with members of the PE and Sport team.
• Requirements of the Performance Swimming Scholarship include attendance at all sessions within the week and any additional sessions as stipulated by the Head Coach. Successful athletes will swim for St George’s School in selected local, regional and national galas and will join St George’s Ascot Swimming Club (SGASC), in addition to the School, and compete at select open meets for SGASC throughout their time at School, as outlined in our annual competition plan.
Applications are only considered if swimmers have at least three county times in their own region and these will be compared to the Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire qualifying times to confirm eligibility.

PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
INFORMATION
Awarded to a pupil who shows exceptional ability and promise in a combination of drama, music or dance. They are expected to take a leading part in the dramatic life of the School and act as a positive role model for other pupils.
Scholarship requirements
Two of the following three; Drama, Music or Dance:
• Applicants should submit a pre-recorded audition to (1) the Director of Drama (identical to the Drama Scholarship requirements), (2) The Director of Music (identical to the Music Scholarship requirements) and/or (3) Natalie Vinson, Principal of the Natalie Vinson School of Dance. Applicants submitting a dance audition should provide a selfchoreographed solo performance in any style of dance, between 60 and 90 seconds in duration. Dance applicants should also supply a reference or report from their current dance teacher, and a digital portfolio of evidence of excellence in dance.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview and live audition with the Director of Drama, the Director of Music and Principal of the Natalie Vinson School of Dance.
• Applicants who are applying separately for the Music and/or Drama Scholarships do not have to audition additionally in those disciplines for the Performing Arts Scholarship.
• Contribution to the performing arts life of the School is a requirement for Scholarship retention.

SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Sports Scholarships are awarded to pupils performing at a high level in at least two of our main competitive sports at St George’s (athletics, cricket, football, netball, swimming or tennis).
Sports Scholars are expected to show enthusiasm and commitment to their chosen discipline(s) by attending training and fixtures, whilst also setting a positive example for others in terms of attitude and performance.
Scholarship requirements
• A written reference for each sport the candidate lists on the application form. This reference should be provided by a coach or teacher to evidence the highest level of performance the candidate is working at (such as club or regional) and their current capabilities within sport, as well as their capacity and potential to develop within the sport. These should be sent with the completed application form by the deadline.
• Candidates will be invited to attend a Scholarship Day at the School, which would typically entail a range of physical tests to determine movement capabilities and fitness. Candidates will also participate in at least two sport
assessments. All Scholarship Days will involve an interview with the Director of Sport and members of the PE and Sport Department.
• Significant contribution to the sporting life of the School during the week and on Saturdays is a requirement for Scholarship retention. This includes participation in training, playing matches, and attending Strength and Conditioning and other workshops as organised by the Director of Sport.

SWIMMING SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Awarded to performers with a high level of ability in swimming. Swimming Scholars are expected to show passion and dedication to swimming and attend both morning and afternoon training, in addition to any galas specified.
Swimming Scholars are expected to always set a positive example for others.
Scholarship requirements
• At least one written reference should be provided by a coach or teacher to evidence the highest level of performance the candidate is working at (such as club, county or regional) and their current capabilities and achievements within swimming, as well as their capacity and potential to progress. These should be sent with the completed application form by the deadline.
• Candidates will be invited to attend an assessment day, involving a pool assessment as well as land based fitness and athletic movement tests.
All scholarship days will involve an interview with the Director of Sport and members of the PE/Swimming team.
• Contribution to the swimming life of the School is a requirement for Scholarship retention.
