Together we can do great things.” Mother Teresa WOW, what a week of adventures, celebrations, and farewells we have had at St George’s to start Term Four. They have reflected the power of this quote by Mother Teresa, as we have seen the whole School community working together to achieve such ‘great things’. It has been an incredible journey.
to find different opportunities to shine, creating a positive impact on the world and those around them. The 2022 Student Guild, just like the quote, need the contributions of all within the St George’s Community to be successful in establishing their dreams and aspirations for 2022.
This week we congratulated the newly appointed members of our 2022 Student Guild and thanked the outgoing guild members for their many fine contributions and efforts in leading the School throughout 2021. Their positive energy, resilience and passion for St George’s was apparent as I started at the School in March. I am immensely proud of all that they have achieved. They have started several new initiatives and traditions which will become part of their legacy for the future, including the World’s Greatest Shave and the Year 12 Dress Up Day to conclude the school year. Our 2022 Student Guild have big shoes to fill.
The annual Art Exhibition was also opened this week at Brookfield Properties. It is a spectacular showcase of the multitude and varied creative talents of our students. Mrs Carol Wohlnick and Mrs Katie Fassom have inspired such amazing pieces of work and it was a difficult decision for me to select the prize winners for the Principal’s Acquisitions. These three pieces of work will take pride of place within the School for a 12 month period. I thank the artists for agreeing to share their works with us; they are just sensational pieces, and I am confident that they will inspire future generations of artists within the School. In looking at the variety of works within the exhibition - from the statement entrance piece of the 101 Dalmatians to the fantasy shoe sculptures; from the Year 10 skateboard designs to the Year 8 strange hybrid creatures - all are just wonderful examples of a talent that sadly is not part of my skill set but a clear indicator of the creative imagination of these students within our School. These students can evidently ‘do things that I cannot’.
Whilst an elected student leadership group is an important part of the momentum of school life, leadership comes in many different shapes and forms. There is a wide array of leadership opportunities for all within our School and to those students who have missed out on a formal leadership position I encourage them to continue to give of their best, to be an active participant of school life and 1

Tommy comes to us from Halls Head College. He is a graduate teacher who has recently completed his Master of Teacher qualification from UWA having gained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Australia majoring in Marine Biology and Zoology. He is keen to ensure that every student in his class loves to learn about Science.

Valedictory celebrations were part of a fabulous farewell to the Class of 2021 as they departed St George’s for the very last time. It was delightful to see them come together as a year group, to reminisce, to remember and to celebrate all that they had achieved as part of their St George’s journey. They shared smiles, laughter, memories of tougher times together and were thankful for the many unique opportunities that life as a St George’s student had given them. The evening concluded with us coming together with their families to celebrate the completion of their Year 12 studies as they stepped out into pastures new as graduates of St George’s Anglican Grammar School. We wish them all the best for the future and are proud of their many accomplishments. Our hope is that they will remain connected with the School as part of our newly created student alumni group, ‘The Grammarians’. As the newest St George’s graduates, we look forward to them contributing much to this important alumni organisation. What was evident about this day was that ‘together we can do great things’ – the students had all achieved greatness during their time here and as a staff throughout the School and as parents of the Class of 2021, we all came together to ensure the ultimate success of the day.
Debbie is an enthusiastic and supportive Mathematics teacher who initially started her career in schools as an Educational Assistant before pursuing her passion for Maths and becoming a teacher. She has taught at Hale School, Scotch College and Margaret River Senior High School. She is confident that she will build students growth mindset in mathematics within her classes.
Mrs Kim Greener Humanities and English Teacher
Kim holds a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Teaching from UWA. Prior to joining St. George’s Anglican Grammar School she has taught English as a Second Language and loves nothing more than creating engaging lessons that cater for the diverse array of student needs within the Humanities and English area.

Leanne joins us to support the Music Department administratively. She has held a variety of administrative roles at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School as well as Bunbury Grammar School. Living in the city Mrs Fowler is excited to be able to walk to work each day and prides herself on making a positive difference to the students in her care.

We continue to seek expressions of interest from old scholars to be re connected with the School, both those who attended St George’s Anglican Grammar School and those from the history of the school as Murdoch College.
Mathematics Teacher
Ms Bhabra joins us from Peter Moyes Anglican Community School where she has been teaching mathematics across all year groups since 2019. Originally from the United Kingdom she migrated to Australia with her husband to be closer to family. Ms Bhabra loves being a teacher and finds joy in building positive relationships with her students and getting them excited about Mathematics.
Our aim is to initially gather the data of our alumni and then in 2022 to begin to host a range of social activities and events so as to begin the connections with the School. As a graduate, please get in touch in and complete this form. Register as a Grammarian

Chaplain’s Corner
Leadership is not about watching and correcting. Lord, let us remember it is about listening and connecting.
This term is always the most exciting and busy of the school year. We announce our new leaders for the coming year and farewell our Year 12 cohort. There is celebration and sadness, joy and tears.
Leadership is not about telling people what to do. Lord, let us find out what people want. Leadership is less about the love of power and more about the power of love.
At our Chapel on Monday, I read a prayer for leaders. Leadership can be difficult to define, but Christian leadership has a particular character. It focuses on community responsibility rather than individual privilege.
Lord, as we continue to undertake the role of leader let us be affirmed by the servant leadership we witness in your son Jesus.
Here is the prayer I shared with the staff and students of St George’s.
Let us walk in the path He has set and let those who will, follow. Let our greatest passion be compassion.

Last week, Park Play recommenced for junior students and despite some rainy lunchtimes, we still managed to dodge the worst downpours and enjoy time in the city and at Elizabeth Quay. Students are welcome to join in the fun playing cricket or basketball, or just relaxing. The students can also bring their skateboards or scooters, depending on which day they go out. If they check with the supervising teachers, they will know which day they will be at a suitable venue to “skate-or-scoot”. Venues will also be in Daily Notices. Thank you for the positive feedback on the new format for CoCurricular selection. Plans are underway for the 2022 program with a mix of old and exciting new activities. The 2022 NWAS sporting fixtures for summer and winter have been finalised and we are looking forward to the competition next year. After a very busy Term Three and start of Term Four when we bade our Year 12 students farewell at their Valedictory this week, it is a relatively quiet fortnight for the School. If you are in the city this week, do go to view the Art Exhibition in the foyer of the building adjacent to the School. We are so proud of the work of the Visual Art and Design students.

Appointment of Head of Curriculum It is with much excitement that I announce that Mr Anthony Bochrinis has been appointed as our new Head of Curriculum for 2022.

At our Chapel service on Monday 18 October, we inducted the 2022 Student Guild. Part of that ceremony is always to thank and acknowledge the outgoing Guild. I have had the pleasure of working with the 2021 Guild this year; they are a fantastic group of students who have had a clear focus of connecting with their fellow students. I want to express my gratitude to the Guild for their leadership during this period. One of the key messages passed on during this service was for the incoming leadership group to understand that they are a caretaker of their elected position. They should strive to leave it in a better state than when they received it as they are not only a representative of their School and House, but also a representative of each person who has held that position before them. Like those before, they have left their legacy and it is time for them to start theirs.

2021 Valedictory Awards

OLNA September 2021 The results for the September 2021 round of OLNA were distributed to schools on Monday 18 October. Students must demonstrate Level 3 in all three OLNA categories, Numeracy, Reading and Writing. Students in Years 10 to Year 12 who need to demonstrate the minimum standard in at least one component will be provided with two opportunities each year to sit the assessment. Testing rounds are held twice a year and students may only sit the assessment once in each round. They will have a total of up to six opportunities before the end of Year 12 to demonstrate the literacy and numeracy requirement. Any student who has not yet met the requirements has been contacted and will sit the next round of OLNA in March 2022.

Last week, students had a wonderful time on their Mountain Bike Excursion to Dwellingup. A fantastic way to start off Term Four! The students were welcomed by Mr Peter White from Dwellingup Adventures on arrival in Dwellingup. We then got all our gear, food and water ready, and off we went riding the Munda Biddi & Marrinup Mountain Bike Trail. We rode approximately 20km during the day. We had a larger group than normal, with different riding abilities. I was very proud of how they supported and encouraged each other throughout the ride.

What first got you interested in Music? I first wanted to play music, particularly the saxophone, when I first watched Star Wars and heard the song Cantina Band. I wanted to be able to play it. We treated ourselves by stopping at the famous and award winning Pinjarra Bakery on the way home, for a well-deserved refuelling stop.
What’s the best thing about Music at St George’s? The best thing about music at St George’s would be how inclusive it is. No matter someone’s skill level, everyone gets the opportunity to play in a band and give music a go.

On a Musical Note
Why should other people do music?
On Friday, 15 October Mr Newton and Mr Davy took a group of St George’s musicians from Years 7 to Year 10 to Fredrick Irwin Anglican School in Mandurah for the annual ASC Middle School Band Day. Although the train ride to get there was long, it was definitely worth it! The students enjoyed an amazing day learning three new songs together with the other ASC schools. Everyone had heaps of fun and we look forward to taking part in this event again next year.
What’s your advice for anyone learning Music?
I think that other people should do music because it is a great way to have fun, connect with others around you, and it feels great when you are finally able to play a song that you have wanted to play since the very beginning. No matter how hard or boring it may get, always continue playing and practising because music is incredible fun and it is a great skill to have. 6

Harry Joyner Harry, Year 9, was voted the 2021 WA Youth Sailor of the Year at the recent Australian Sailing WA Awards. Harry is a WAIS scholarship holder, and a dedicated, fun-loving sailor. With great results and training effort, he was also selected for the Australian Sailing Futures Squad earlier this year in Wind Foiling. Congratulations Harry.
Despite almost cyclonic weather conditions we had a great turnout of past and present students, parents and families and special guests at the Opening Night of the 2021 Art Exhibition. The Jazz band providing a terrific musical backdrop for the evening. This year’s exhibition shows a full compliment of artworks from three full terms of art making. It is an explosion of creative energy, colour and form with works from students in Year 7-12. The Exhibition is open until Friday 29 October.
