As we approach the half-way point of Term 3, I am never surprised how quickly time goes at St George’s. We have already completed many fantastic activities and events, with plenty more to come. Anglican Schools Australia (ASA) Conference I recently attended the annual ASA Conference in Hobart, which had the theme of ‘Awe and Wonder’. What a privilege it was to hear from internationally respected keynote speakers discussing how our Anglican identity is the key to awe and wonder within our Christian faith-based schools. It reminded me once again the value and importance that our Anglicanism brings to the education medium. Our faith is the foundation to every single thing we seek to achieve at St George’s and permits the development of such a wonderful culture and environment that celebrates every individual in a safe and accepting environment.

Dr Heischman’s paper can be found on our website and the SEQTA portal for those who may be interested in exploring and considering what it means to be an Anglican School. A difficult thing to clearly explain, but an important notion to discuss. Service at St George’s – Anglicare Sleepout For those who take the time to read Reverend Heischman’s paper, you will note that Character and Service is one key element that helps to make us who we are. St George’s does this extremely well and I am very proud of how our young people are developing the desire to think of others before themselves and to seek to make a difference to those less fortunate. A few service projects in just the first few weeks of Term 3 that spring to mind include the fortnightly Food Cart, Jeans for Genes, and Project Neil.
One of the presentations was by The Reverend Dr Dan Heischman, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, USA. In 2018, Dr Heischman led a two-day forum with representatives from 160 Anglican Schools on the identity and mission of Australian Anglican Schools, and developed a paper as an outgrowth of this forum. Whilst the

Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) As part of the requirements to achieve the WA Certificate of Education (WACE), students need to demonstrate the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. This can be achieved through the OLNA - Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment. The next round of the OLNA will commence with the Writing Assessment in Week 6 (2 September) and be followed by the Numeracy and Reading in Week 6 and 7.

The official results of the March 2019 round of assessments are available on SEQTA Engage. The category your child received for each of the three assessments determines if they need to participate in the next round of assessments.
Careers Murdoch University Creative Arts & Communication Open Night See how a Creative Media degree from Murdoch could inspire you to use the power and creativity to challenge the way we think about the world. Murdoch offers a real-world Media Arts Centre, strong industry links, and the ability to complete two specialisations in three years.
Specifically, the categories are: Category 1: Students who have not demonstrated the minimum standard and have been identified as students at risk of not meeting the standard. Category 2: Students who have not yet demonstrated the minimum standard but are likely to before the end of Year 12. Category 3: Students who have demonstrated the minimum standard, either through OLNA or by prequalifying through Year 9 NAPLAN 3
Students who have yet to achieve Category 3 will receive an individual schedule indicating the date, room and time of each required assessment. Year 12 End of Semester Exams This week the Year 12 students received their End of Semester exam timetable. These exams commence on Monday 7 October which is the second week of the school holidays. A copy of the exam timetable can be found under the Documents tab on SEQTA Engage. These exams are the final formal assessment students will sit at St George’s before their WACE and WAUFP exams begin.

Parent Guest speaker On 11 September (week 7) St George’s Anglican Grammar will have Dr Jane Genovese in as our Guest speaker for our Parent body. She came recommended by one of our parents, and after hearing her deliver her presentation on Exam hacks to Year 11 and 12 students, it was clear she would add value in a talk to parents. Below is the outline of her talk along with a brief overview. Study Hacks: Helping Your Child Study Smarter (Not Harder) Research shows that unless students are explicitly taught study skills, they won’t just magically pick them up. In this presentation, Dr Jane Genovese draws on academic research, as well as her personal experience studying law and psychology and a PhD, to share what she considers essential study strategies and skills for students and parents. About Dr Jane Genovese Dr Jane Genovese graduated from Murdoch University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Psychology with First Class Honours and received a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence. In 2017, she completed her doctoral thesis in education and psychology. She is the author of several books, including Study Hacks:Your Survival Guide for High 5
School and the comic Smart Study: How to Study Less and Get More. More information around this talk and others taking place will be sent out in the days to come. Please mark this date on your calendar and take the time to come in and listen to an insightful and practical talk which will allow you to have insight into how your child can study smart. Student Guild 2020 Over the next couple of weeks, we will be holding the elections for the 2020 Student Guild. For some positions, speeches will take place in front of the whole school, while for others, speeches will be in front of House groups.
I have the pleasure of working closely with the Student Guild, so I know what a great opportunity student leadership is for our students. Through serving our community, our young leaders learn how to inspire, innovate and delegate. They learn how to manage – both themselves and others – and they learn what integrity really is. I’d like to take the opportunity to extend my thanks to those students who will be applying for positions in the 2020 Student St George’s Anglican Grammar School Newsletter
Guild and to wish them well. It is no small thing to have the courage to put yourself out there in front of your peers and the broader school community, and I congratulate our candidates on taking this first step. Anglicare Sleepout Each year Anglicare WA hosts a schools sleepout to raise funds to support their youth homeless service Street Connect and to offer an opportunity for young people to experience some of the difficulties of being homeless. This year, ten of our Year 10 students took part in the sleepout. On Friday 16 August despite the pouring rain the students eagerly arrived at Optus stadium along with 350 students from 14 Anglican schools from across the city. The event was opened by Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy and Mark Glasson, CEO of Anglicare. The students then participated in the ‘Homelessness Simulation Game’ which illustrated some of the challenges faced by young people as they seek support from services such as CentreLink. After a soup kitchen dinner the students set themselves up for the night. Little did they know that during the night they would be moved on by the security guards, woken by police sirens and dogs barking, even having some of their belongings taken from them. The experience is a great opportunity for our students to develop empathy for those in a less fortunate position than themselves. They also did a fantastic job of fundraising, through sponsorships and school events, the Anglicare Ambassadors and other sleep out participants raised over $1700 to support the work that Anglicare WA does through Street Connect.

Science Week ‘Destination Moon: More Missions More Science’
The Year 9 students were also lucky to enjoy a Dr Karl broadcast, asking all those tricky Science questions.
We celebrated Science Week this year with the unveiling of our Spacement. A darkened basement filled with a moon scape, Moon Rover, a Solar System and lots of stars! Each lunchtime the Science team ran activities for all our students to enjoy. Mr Quan had the VR running, a popular event for our students who loved experiencing a virtual Space shuttle launch, and what it would be like to take a walk on the Moon. Mrs McCann showed how our brains can be fooled into seeing things that may not really be there. Mr Lim and Miss Donovan ran some Food Science shows, explaining the simple Chemistry behind making Sherbet and the Energy Transformations involved in popping Popcorn Kernals. On Friday we all enjoyed the Liquid Nitrogen Show, munching on some Dragon’s Breath Dessert (Frozen Fruit loops and Marshmallows!) and learning about the changes in everyday objects when they are exposed to -196oC.

A whole school Science Week Kahoot rounded off a MASSIVE week. Congratulations to all students for competing and to the winners. Thankyou to the Science team for their enthusiasm, knowledge and passion, including our tireless lab technician, Mrs Chatfield, who makes it all work behind the scenes. We are not quite done, however! Coming up this term will be the Science Café excursion for some Year 10 students, the Year 12 Human Biology students will be learning about our Human Origins at Perth Zoo, and the Year 11 Physics students will be off to Gin Gin and Adventure World to complement their studies. In The Music Department The Music Department hosted a special performance event during PBP last Wednesday which many people came and watched, featuring Ronan Dixon, Jackson Edmonds, Xavier Comacho and Leo Sasesko.
A Night at the Museum Once again, the students and staff of St George’s were invited to travel back in time to discover the mysteries of Ancient Civilisations. Level three was transformed into a convention of long lost, but never forgotten, ancient individuals. As the exhibits in the museum came to life we were able to converse with Hypatia, Aristotle, Empress Wang, Zenobia, Artemesia of Caria, Cleopatra, Empress Lu Zhe, Attila the Hun, King Leonidas, only a handful of the influential warriors, mathematicians, explorers and leaders of their time. The Year 7 students showcased the effort and care that they put into their presentations and costumes. Artefacts were sculpted from clay and wreaths donned. We celebrated significant figures from Persia to Vietnam, Egypt to China. For a few hours we were immersed by the incredible figures who changed how we look at the stars, religion, maths, science, philosophy, politics and travel. I would like to congratulate the Year 7’s on a fantastic cross-curricular project!

On Friday 16 August Eliza Griffin and Ronan Dixon performed at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Victoria Park to open a talk by Dr Paula Gooder. Dr Gooder, a Biblical scholar, author and speaker, was in Perth to speak at clergy school and her talk at St. Peter’s was her only public appearance in Perth.

Sadie – I loved the learning experience that I went on whilst learning about all of these influential people through Ancient Times. Kaylee – I learnt lots of good research skills and enjoyed watching everyone’s projects come together on the day. Maya – I enjoyed learning about the discoveries that everyone made so long ago.

The Inter-House Carnival day is growing in every capacity and one of the notable improvements is the number of parents assisting and spectating at the carnival. The ACC Team is now selected, and the program is out in first draft form. It really is an achievement to represent your School, so I sincerely congratulate all team members on their qualification. It looks like we have strength across all age categories. The ACC Athletics Carnival is on the 6 September at the WA Athletics Centre, Stephenson Road, Floreat. We will be training next week on Tuesday at McGillivray.
The Year 7 and 10 students have been engaged in the European Handball curriculum, held at UWA and Lords Rec Centre. Skills are really progressing well and so are their strategies and tactical play.
Year 9 students have been enjoying AFL at Supreme Court Gardens whilst the Year 8 Netball program is going exceptionally well with boys and girls having some quality Netball games.
Please be informed that all students must come to school, and depart from school, in Full School Uniform and not in their PE Uniform. This is School Policy. Best of luck to all St George’s City to Surf Team who will be running this Sunday 25 August. The School will be open from 7 -9 am so let’s meet in the Fitness Centre and get prepared for our run. The 12km starts at 8.30am. I will be in the school at 8am.

School News Student Term Dates - 2020 Term 1 30 January - 9 April New Student Orientation 29 January Students Mid Term Break, Friday 28 February Term 2 30 April - 3 July Students Mid Term Break, Friday 29 May Term 3 27 July - 25 September New Student Orientation 24 July Students Mid Term Break, Friday 21 August Term 4 13 October - 9 December Enrolments The School Enrolment Policy requires one full term’s notice in writing prior to the withdrawal of a student from the School. Where such notice is not received, the School will charge an amount equal to the tuition fees for that current term. To avoid fees in lieu being charged, notice of a student’s withdrawal must be received by the School before the first day of the School Term preceding the Term of the student’s departure. If this does not occur, families will be charged the remainder of the current Term, plus an additional Terms fee in lieu.
If the account has been paid in full and a refund is due, payment will be processed for the full refund due within seven days of exit.

Please contact the staff member directly to ensure prompt action to your message. Uniform Shop St George’s uniforms are purchased from Matrix Uniforms Showroom, 1 Hasler Road Osborne Park or online. Uniform fittings are available from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday. The Science Department needs your help! Donations of any old working fish tank accessories will be gratefully received to fit out our 2 new fish tanks. We are seeking the following: • Gravel; • Lights; • Filter and Air pumps; • Decorations (Plastic plants etc); and • Large sheets of acrylic or polystyrene. Also, any ice cream containers (any size, with or without lids) will also be accepted. Students can bring their donations in directly to the Science department or their Science teacher.
Upon withdrawal of a student from the School, all fees and charges incurred for that student are payable to the School in full within seven days of exit.

Programs are available for children from five to 17 years and cater to all skill levels – from beginners to those doing their Bronze Medallion. They are being offered at pool venues across the State. At age 23, Henry had a stroke and woke up 98% blind. His passion for running is so strong that he continues to run. He is here to run the City to Surf this Sunday then he flies to Sydney to run the Sydney Marathon. He does this with the aid of sighted runners and his record is 2 hours 31 mins. 17 Edition 12 2019
