The second largest Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania is in Lawrence County. Learn about their culture with a drive yourself map or a guided tour of homes, businesses, and the Amish Countryside!

CLOTHING

Amish are easily identified by their appearance. The men grow a beard once they marry and always wear a hat. The women’s dress, primarily in blue, are fastened with straight pins rather than buttons because the church feels that buttons are too showy. They always wear a covering on their heads.

RESIDENTS

The Old Order Amish sect in Lawrence County settled around 1847. Currently, there are approximately 2,300 Amish residents in 19 church districts surrounding the villages of New Wilmington and Volant. The average family has seven children with each having daily chores to complete, starting at the age of seven.

LANGUAGE

Amish speak a dialect of German known as Pennsylvania Dutch, the language spoken at home. English is taught to children beginning in first grade.

HOMES

The Amish live on farms without the convenience of electricity. Many Amish homes include additions or small detached dwellings called “dawdy” houses, where grandparents live.

GRAVEYARD

A small nondescript Amish graveyard is located behind the white gate at the intersection of Auction Road and High Street outside New Wilmington. The small stones remember Amish; the larger stones remember Mennonites.

SCHOOLHOUSES

Most of the Amish children attend one of 19 different Amish-run parochial schools in the area. When in session, 25 to 30 children from first to eighth-grade are enrolled in each. To complete school they must take and pass a difficult eighthgrade proficiency test.

AUCTION HOUSE

The Auction House is located off Route 208 in New Wilmington. Amish and English farmers meet at the market every Monday to socialize and purchase goods such as livestock and kerosene.

TRANSPORTATION

The Amish mode of transportation is a horse and buggy, although for work or long distance travel they will ride a bus or hire a vehicle to transport them. Brown-capped buggies are unique to Lawrence County.

While touring the Amish Countryside, please refrain from taking direct photos of Amish faces. This is forbidden by the church because they consider the human spirit more important than the body.

Lawrence County’s Presidential Pottery Bell

Lawrence County will be celebrating will an array of different events, lecture series and tours through the year. Be sure to follow our events page for 250th events.

Lawrence County’s commemorative, “Presidential Pottery Bell,” pays homage to Lawrence County’s rich industrial, innovative and creative history. Sponsored by Visit Lawrence County, artists Kimberly B. Koller-Jones and Paige Kleinfelder brought the vision to life.

The ‘Bells Across PA’ is an art series to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States in 2026. The bells are fiberglass replicas of the Liberty Bell and each county in the Commonwealth will have one or more. Inspiration for Lawrence County’s bell design was taken from two prominent local industries with international reach– china and fireworks. Shenango China (1901-1991), affectionately known as The Pottery, was a prominent

manufacturer of restaurant and hotel china based in New Castle that employed more than 33,000 county residents over its 100-year history. Founded in 1901, it initially focused on commercial china and later expanded into producing dinnerware for the international elite including Danish royalty and several American presidents (Eisenhower, Johnson, Truman, Roosevelt and Reagan). The company is particularly known for its “American Haviland” line, produced under agreement with the French company, Theodore Haviland from 1936 to 1958, as well as a museum line produced under its fine china division, Castleton China, in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art.

Both Pyrotecnico and Zambelli fireworks companies have histories rooted in family traditions that began in Italy. Antonio Zambelli first brought his notebook of family pyrotechnic recipes to New Castle in 1893. He founded Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Company to lay the foundation for what would become one of the largest and most innovative fireworks companies in the world. Constantino Vitale, Pyrotecnico’s founder, brought his expertise to New Castle in 1922, which– alongside Zambelli - helped establish the town as the “Fireworks Capital of America”, for which Visit Lawrence County owns the trademark. The overall surface is crackled to imitate a porcelain dish. The design of the band around the bottom perimeter mimics the band around the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential plate. The original is embellished with state wildflowers selected by The First Lady, Ladybird Johnson. Lawrence County’s bell replaced these with Pennsylvania wildflowers; Turk’s Cap Lily, Mountain Laurel, Virginia Bluebells, Butterfly Milkweed, Wild Blue Phlox, Black-eyed Susans, Columbine, Goldenrod, Cranesbill Geranium and Buttercup.

Centered on the front and back of each side is a replica of the bald eagle that was also used on the Johnson presidential service. Behind the eagle is a fireworks display nodding to the celebration of the 250th anniversary and our community’s firework history. You can view both the Lawrence County bell, the Lyndon B. Johnson plate it’s modeled after and more at the Arts + Education at the Hoyt.

You may refer to your passion as birding or birdwatching, regardless the observation and study of birds is one of the most popular outdoor activities in America. Birds are all around us and the great thing is you can be any age to enjoy seeing and hearing the birds we share our world with. It only requires patience, attention to detail, and the perpetual desire to see a new species or observe a new behavior. Lawrence County is a special place for birders because there are numerous locations where you may add a new species to your Life List, if you are just starting out, or you may obtain unequaled photos or videos of rarer species. Additionally, birding intrinsically lends itself to combination with other popular outdoor activities, such as paddling a waterway, peddling a bike trail, piloting your vehicle on a scenic country road, or perambulating (strolling the countryside).

Here are some magnificent species you could possibly add to your Life List in Lawrence County!

SANDHILL CRANES

PA State Game Lands 284 and the surrounding area, near Leesburg is home to one of PA’s few nesting populations of Sandhill Cranes with their elaborate courtship dance.

BALD EAGLES

The Shenango and Mahoning Rivers come together in Lawrence County to form the Beaver River. Anytime you are near these waterways, even in downtown New Castle, you may observe a majestic Bald Eagle.

GREAT BLUE HERONS

Roughly 300-yards west of I-376, less than a half-mile south of the Mitchell Road exit is a prolific great blue heron colony, known as a rookery or heronry. Several dozen nests are clearly visible in the tops of the towering sycamore trees.

CHIMNEY SWIFTS

Pulaski Presbyterian Church’s red brick chimney hosts a prolific colony, where it is delightful to observe their aerial acrobatics on summer evenings.

PURPLE MARTINS

Lawrence County’s northern tier is home to our Amish Community and most farms have one or several purple martin colony nests for natural insect exterminators.

WOOD DUCKS

The eastern portion of PA State Game Lands 150, adjacent to the village of Pulaski, is home to a thriving population of colorful wood ducks amongst its swamp, potholes, and many oaks.

WARBLERS AND SPARROWS

McConnells Mill State Park occupies the geographically unique Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. It is transversed by the North Country National Scenic Trail, where amongst its many Eastern Hemlocks and diverse deciduous trees, numerous species of warblers and sparrows may be sighted. According to eBird, a total of 141 different avian species have been recorded there over the years..

PILEATED WOODPECKERS

The crow-sized, largest member of the woodpecker family can also be found on PA SGL 150 and numerous other wooded portions of Lawrence County, easily identifiable by its distinct call.

Breathtaking Waterfalls

What if I told you that SIX of Western PA’s waterfalls can be found in Lawrence County? And what if I told you that 4 of them are right in McConnells Mill State Park? That doesn’t make them better than the two located outside of the park, but it does mean that if you’re in a time crunch, it’s easy to check multiple waterfalls off of your wishlist in one trip.

Let’s start with the McConnells Mill waterfalls…

Alpha Falls is a beautiful 35 foot waterfall, and if you catch it at the right time of year, it’s absolutely drenched in green ferns and vibrant mosses, giving it an ethereal look (think FernGully). During drier seasons this waterfall may be barely a trickle, but it’s just a short walk from the parking area so it’s definitely worth stopping for a peek. Use the Alpha Pass Trail to find this beauty.

Kildoo Falls is another waterfall that really depends on recent rainfall, but when it’s flowing it’s a beautiful cascade that tumbles over a series of boulders. You will find this waterfall on the Kildoo Trail (along with another unnamed waterfall that pops up after heavy rainfall). One view is from near the trail, and the other is taken off trail closer to the top of the falls. Please use caution if you attempt to get closer to the top of this one, it gets slick!

Breakneck Falls is a 25 foot waterfall that can be found on the opposite end of the Kildoo Trail, just past the Eckert Bridge and only a short quarter mile additional hike. Depending on recent rain you might need to navigate some water crossings for this one, so I recommend waterproof shoes.

Hells Hollow Falls is another McConnells Mill gem, but unless you’re in the mood for a very long hike you’ll need to drive to the trailhead. From the parking area it’s an easy half mile hike to Hells Hollow. This 15 footer is beautiful in every season. When the water is low you can usually cross and get a perfect picture from the other side of Hell Run, but when the water is high you will probably need to admire the waterfall from the stairs.

Big Run Falls can be found in New Castle and requires zero hiking, making it one of the easiest falls to see in the county. These falls are tucked away in Cascade Park, a nature area named after an amusement park that opened in 1897. Now remnants of the original structures can be found scattered throughout the park.

At 50 feet tall, Quaker Falls is the tallest waterfall in the county. Viewing this waterfall requires a short stroll from the parking lot to the upper viewing platforms, and a series of steps to reach the platform near the base. Fun fact: This one is less than a mile from the Ohio border!

Designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003, The Stavich Bike Trail is the only bicycle trail in the United States that will take you through three different townships, two different counties and two different states.

Twelve miles long and eight feet wide, this paved trail runs parallel to the scenic Mahoning River and the rails of the former Youngstown-New Castle street car line. Over rolling hills, through farmlands and wooded countryside, the Trail unfolds east and west to provide safe, barrier-free recreation all year long. In the spring, summer and fall, the Trail is open for bicycle riding, hiking, walking and jogging; in the winter, the Trail is used for crosscountry skiing. Hours of use are from sunrise to sunset.

Designated as a National Park in 2023, The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) has twenty-two miles of off-road hiking and eleven miles of temporary connector road walk in Lawrence County. This wouldn’t be possible without our local Wampum Chapter of the NCT.

NEW CASTLE

New Castle is the county seat of Lawrence County and is known for being the Fireworks Capital of America. In the 2011 movie, Super 8, New Castle was referenced as “The Fireworks Capital of the World.” The locals are very proud of their heritage and it shows.

In years past, Shenango China was manufactured here and presidential service collections were used in the White House for President Eisenhower and President Johnson. Along with President Reagan having a collection specifically made for Air Force One. Locals traveling across the country will quite often still turn over dinnerware to check if it was made by Shenango China.

Bob Hope can be heard on YouTube speaking about his start in New Castle as part of a vaudeville production. The Warner Brothers; Sam, Albert, Jack and Harry, established their first motion picture theater in 1907 showing the silent film “The Great Train Robbery.” This nickelodeon is being revived and is now accepting tours at the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum.

When we say “Home is Here” we are not just referring to a location, but a strong sense of community that is being built in New Castle, PA as a place where anyone can lay down their roots and grow.

The two main parks are Ewing Park (baseball field, tennis, bocce and basketball courts, swimming pool and an area just for kids – Kid’s Created Kingdom) and Stiefel Park (Softball and dek hockey). Other notable mentions are the nature trail, community plaza and the local farmers market.

Dick Allen, A Hometown Legend

Richard Anthony Allen, nicknamed ‘Crash’ and ‘the Wampum Walloper’, was an American professional baseball player. He was born March 8, 1942, in Wampum PA, one of 9 children to Era and Coy Allen and grew up in Chewton, PA, a small village just outside of Wampum.

Allen attended Wampum High School where, along with his brother Hank and Ron, he was a star basketball player at the school. All three brothers earned All-State honors. In the 1958 –1960 seasons, Allen captained the baseball team as well, leading them to the state championship and earning All-American honors. Despite their prowess in basketball, all three brothers chose to prioritize baseball as, at the time, it paid better and the brothers wanted to buy their mother a new house. Hank became an outfielder for three teams in the American League; Ron briefly played 1st base for the 1972 St. Louis Cardinals. Dick was scouted by Phillies scout Jack Ogden who convinced the Phillies to sign Allen for a $70,000 bonus in 1960. Over fifteen year career, Allen played for five pro teams: Philadelphia Phillies (1963–1969

and 1975–1976), St. Louis Cardinals (1970), Los Angeles Dodgers (1971), Chicago White Sox (1972-1974), and the Oakland Athletics (1977). He was a 7-time All-Star (1965-1967, 1970, 1972-1975).

He was named the American League MVP in 1972. Allen played during a pitching-dominant era and was considered one of the top sluggers of the 1960s and 1970s era. He finished his career with 351 home runs and a .534 batting percentage.

Allen was posthumously inducted on July 27, 2025, to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In celebration of this, the city of Wampum held an Induction Watch Party at Main St. Chapel on Clyde Street in Wampum. Later in the year they had an official ribbon cutting for his mural. The mural is located at 331 Main St., Wampum, PA.

This two and one-half story, square plan Second Empire built prior to 1886, was home to industrialist William Patterson, who was instrumental in developing the areas coal fields and New Castle’s first hospital.

THE CLENDENIN HOUSE

THE WILLIAM REIS HOUSE

312 HIGHLAND AVE.

This charming two and one-half story rectangular plan frame Queen Anne was built for industrialist William Reis.

THE GEORGE JOHNSON HOUSE

318 HIGHLAND AVE.

This two and one-half story square plan Colonial Revival residence was built for owner of Johnson Bronze, George W. Johnson, in 1901. He was a leading local industrialist involved in limestone, iron and bronze production.

THE JOHN BOWER HOUSE

328 HIGHLAND AVE.

This home was built for John Bower between 18861889. Mr. Bower was a local merchant and tailor. It was one of the first large homes built on the North Hill.

THE EDWIN OHL HOUSE

208 E. LINCOLN AVE.

A Queen Anne influence, the house was built in 1899 for Edwin Newton Ohl, the manager of the New Castle office of Republic Iron and Steel.

THE SCOTTISH RITE CATHEDRAL

110 E. LINCOLN AVE.

Constructed in 1924-1925 for the Free Masons Lodge #433 and dedicated in 1927, this Neoclassical rectangular plan contains a ballroom, banquet room and theater, as well as Masons’ lodge rooms and various smaller chambers. The theater seating capacity is 2,800.

HOLY SPIRIT PARISH’S SAINT PIO CHAPEL

Pennsylvania’s only Saint Pio Chapel is in downtown New Castle at Holy Spirit Parish’s St. Mary Church.

In March of 1899, Grazio Forgione, father of Francesco Forgione (now known as Saint Pio or Padre Pio) moved to New Castle to work on a local farm in the Mahoningtown area of the city to send money back to Italy so that his son, Francesco, could meet the educational requirements to enter the Capuchin Order of Priests. And the rest, as they say, is history, with Francesco going on to the priesthood and becoming one of the world’s most beloved modern saints.

The Chapel was officially recognized on Thursday, September 19, 2024 with a special ceremony marked by the installation of an authentic first-class relic

of Saint Pio owned by the Saint Pio Foundation.

The chapel is one of a series of six chapels in the United States in partnership with the Saint Pio Foundation which form the sign of the cross, and more specifically, the signs of the wounds of Christthe Stigmata.

In addition to offering the faithful an opportunity close to home to pray in the presence of the relics of Saint Pio, the Saint Pio Foundation’s vision is that of fulfilling Padre Pio’s own desire when he said, “I am everyone’s everything.” Each visitor can now truly say, “Padre Pio is mine!”

Descendants of the Forgione Family still reside in New Castle to this day and recently met with the Saint Pio Foundation CEO, Luciano Lamonarca, to recount stories handed down through the years about Saint Pio.

SISTERS OF THE HUMILITY OF MARY

The Sisters of the Humility of Mary are a Roman Catholic religious community that was founded in France in 1855 and later immigrated to the United States.

Situated on 760 acres in Western Pennsylvania near the Ohio border, Villa Maria is the community center and home of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and encompasses a rich tradition of bringing more abundant life to God’s people. Located inside the Villa is Magnificat Chapel, an elegantly designed place of worship that has become the center of spiritual life for sisters and residents.

The Villa Shoppe, an official Fair-Trade retailer, partners with vendors to offer unique products that are responsibly sourced for every occasion and ensure fair wages to artisans.

On the grounds is the Villa Maria Farm, which grows certified organic produce that is seasonally available for sale, with proceeds helping to defray costs of donating produce to local food banks, shelters and parishes. The farm features a fully operational greenhouse and herb garden. Guests can also enjoy the beauty of nature on several hiking trails on the property. In addition, the Villa is home to one of the sisters’ sponsored ministries, Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center (VMESC). VMESC offers an abundance of programs for all ages, including personal and spiritual retreats. Overnight accommodation is available for up to 200 guests. VMESC also utilizes the Villa Maria Conference Center, a 2,760 squarefoot meeting space.

ORTHODOX MONASTERY OF TRANSFIGURATION

The Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration is a monastery for women under the jurisdiction of The Orthodox Church in America. It was founded in 1967 by Mother Alexandra (the former Princess Ileana of Romania) whose dream it was to provide a place where American Orthodox women from all ethnic backgrounds could come to live the monastic life and benefit from a liturgical cycle in English. Since that time, her vision has been fulfilled. The nuns, many of whom are converts to Orthodoxy, as well as the monastery’s many visitors, span a variety of backgrounds.

Located just 35 miles north of Pittsburgh, in the hills near Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, it is open to all pilgrims, Orthodox and non-orthodox alike. A visit to the monastery can provide a peaceful rest for your soul, an opportunity to get away from the busy-ness of the world and a time to experience God’s presence and guidance.

The monastery is closed Sunday afternoon through Monday (with the exception of certain Feast Days). Calling ahead for tours is highly recommended.
