PATRICK GIBBS Patrick Gibbs was born in London in 1959. He says that his art career started promisingly when he won a pencil-case in a primary school painting competition. He later studied at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Magdalen College, Oxford where, despite the best efforts of the tutors to turn him into an Abstract Expressionist painter, he painted mostly portraits and figures. After university Patrick lived in Germany for a year, working on building sites and teaching English, before deciding that he wanted to be a painter. He bought an old van, filled it with art materials and spent the next few years driving around Europe teaching himself to paint landscapes. The highlight of Patrick’s travels was a year spent in Tarquinia, a beautiful medieval village north of Rome. Here he devoted himself to painting almost everything he saw financing his time by drawing street portraits. Back in London, after a brief spell of teaching Art in schools, Patrick decided to paint full time. Since then he has become known for his carefully observed and emotive paintings. Inspiration for his paintings comes from his extensive travels around the world. He excels at painting everyday scenes in exotic places such as Cuba, Madagascar, Kerala or Zanzibar, but he is also an accomplished painter of portraits and landscapes. He paints whatever inspires him and the result is a collection of artwork of outstanding quality and variety. Patrick has a large following of loyal art collectors always vying for his work and he has exhibited in many of England’s leading art galleries as well as many galleries in America.

PAUL TREASURE Paul Treasure was born in 1961 in Gloucestershire and studied at Cheltenham College of Art. He then moved to London where he worked from his studio in Holborn as an established and highly regarded artist, taking on commissions for public works of art worldwide, as well as for private clients. In 1991 Paul took a year’s sabbatical to paint whilst travelling the world, this journey took him through Africa, India, Southeast Asia and Central America. On his return he moved to Hampshire where he had several solo sell-out shows exhibiting these works. Following this, in 1993, he was commissioned to be expedition artist on the first ever crossing of the Taklamakan Desert in North West China for three months, after which he exhibited these works at various shows, including the Royal Geographical Society in London. Paul’s style is expressive, energetic and full of colour. His paintings capture the feeling and emotion of a place, whilst depicting the interplay between light, land, water and sky. His dramatic interpretations of the English landscape show his response to the ever-changing seasons, weather and light; and his bold use of palette knife, brush strokes and mixed media, result in distinctive mark-making, culminating in vigorous, textured landscapes.

Paul continues to exhibit around the country, whilst still travelling abroad regularly to find inspiration for his paintings. His most recent work is inspired by the landscapes and coastal areas of England, including his recent works which are around the chalk streams of the Test Valley.

MARISSA WEATHERHEAD Marissa Weatherhead is primarily a painter of still life, however, she is also a landscape painter. Born in 1962, Marissa studied mainly at the Royal College of Art and at the Gloucestershire College of Art and Design where she obtained a first class degree in Fine Art. Marissa’s landscape work is more figurative and fluid than the structured approach in her still life work. She says of her still life work, ‘These paintings use familiar objects to investigate space, colour, form and composition. They do not deal with direct observational representation; instead they use and concentrate on what we know about an object through knowledge and visual understanding. This approach enables me to play on visuals by flattening or fragmenting the images or simplifying them at will, pulling and pushing space and form. A simple line or a block of colour depict an image. This evolution of the painting is evident in the build up of paint and use of mark making. By continually pushing the painting around it forms layers and textures until finally it reaches its conclusion’. Marissa’s still life paintings owe something to the Cubist paintings of Braque and Picasso (whose work she admires greatly), but her greatest inspiration comes from the more arabesque influence of Matisse. Marissa has exhibited widely both in Ireland and England, as well as in Europe. She was awarded the Boise Travel Scholarship, John Minton Award in 1988 and her work is in the Arthur Anderson collection. Marissa Weatherhead One in a Million · acrylic on canvas · 39 x 39 in.
