WHR Deadline Update! 2025 WHR assessments will come available to complete online starting November 1, 2024. They will also be printed/sent to those whose preferences are set as so in their DigitalBeef accounts. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2025 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2025.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2025 to an assessed 2025 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months) *Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.

Membership Deadline The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline was pushed back to April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2025 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

The Strength in Changing Your Mind

n an industry that often prides itself on tradition, there’s something remarkably powerful and sometimes underappreciated - about the ability to change your mind. Whether you’re choosing genetics for your herd, selecting a bull for your next sale, or adjusting a breeding program after years of doing things the same way, the willingness to reassess, pivot, and evolve can make all the difference between staying stagnant and moving forward. This adaptability is crucial not only in cattle production but also in our personal and professional lives. Changing your mind doesn’t mean you were wrong before; it simply means you’ve gained new information, fresh insights, or a different perspective that allows you to make a better, more informed decision. That’s not weakness - it’s growth. The Shorthorn breed itself is a perfect example of this spirit. Over the decades, our breeders have shifted their focus to meet the evolving demands of the beef industry while still preserving the heart of what makes Shorthorns special: their docility, maternal strength, and versatility. We’ve watched as new technologies emerged, as data-driven selection became the norm, and as customer demands changed - and we’ve embraced those changes while staying true to our values. The breeders who succeed today are those who continue to learn. They ask questions, attend conferences, engage with commercial cattlemen and customers, and listen to their needs. They experiment and adjust, and yes - sometimes they change their minds. In our roles as producers, board members, staff, and advocates for this breed, we all benefit when we create space for flexibility. When we’re not rigidly attached to a single viewpoint, we become more collaborative, more 10

creative, and more effective problem solvers. We build stronger relationships with each other because we’re willing to listen and consider different angles. That kind of open-mindedness builds trust - and trust is what this breed and this community thrive on. As we head into the spring and summer event season, you may find yourself faced with decisions - big and small. You might revisit past assumptions or consider a new path forward. Maybe it’s a marketing change. Maybe it’s how you approach shows or sales. Maybe it’s a fresh way to connect with your customers. Don’t be afraid to try something new just because

it’s unfamiliar. You don’t have to be perfect - you just have to be willing to grow. The most impactful leaders in our industry aren’t the ones who always got it right from the start. They’re the ones who learned, adapted, and weren’t afraid to change their minds when it mattered most. Let’s take that as encouragement - not just in our breeding decisions, but in how we lead, how we treat one another, and how we move this breed forward. Here’s to keeping our minds open and our hearts in the right place.

Staying in the Know on Shorthorn Events Life is busy and sometimes it hard to keep track of everything going on around you. But don’t worry, we are here to help you! Well, at least with Shorthorn events that are coming up. There is a calendar located on the NEW website (shorthorn. org - then select “events” - then calendar) that we post up and coming Shorthorns events that will be happening in your area or surrounding states. I ask that any state association that has upcoming events, to please contact us and we will get this updated on the website. With that note, it’s also time to update the State Association Board of Directors listed on the website. This is a great tool used for new members joining the association to find ways to get involved and communicate with those breeders leading their state. If you are a new state association director or a past director with updated information, please email wade@shorthorn.org with that information and we will get that updated on the website. We are currently working on reaching out to each states Board of Directors to get updated contact information. A roster of Officers for each state will be listed in the July issue of the Shorthorn Country Magazine. It’s always great to communicate and keep members up to date with the newest things happening. Watch out for more information and events like this happening on the website calendar.

American Shorthorn Association Welcomes Bryce Schumann as Director of Performance Programs and Commercial Acceptance Consultant The American Shorthorn Association is proud to welcome Bryce Schumann to our team as the new Director of Performance Programs and Commercial Acceptance Consultant. Bryce will serve in this role as a part-time consultant, bringing an exceptional depth of knowledge and experience to strengthen the breed’s performance initiatives and enhance commercial relevance. Bryce is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in animal breeding, performance data, and genomic technologies. He served for 15 years in various leadership roles within the American Angus Association, including time with Certified Angus Beef and customer relations. During his seven years as CEO, Bryce was instrumental in implementing cutting-edge technologies for genetic and genomic selection. Under his leadership, the integration of genetic recessives and informatics revolutionized data management practices within the

association. Currently, Bryce works as a Strategic Account Manager at Neogen, where he collaborates with AI companies to improve animal safety, expand genomic selection tools, and advance DNA sequencing technologies. His recent work has focused on feed efficiency and performance-based selection, further supported by his own operation raising registered Hereford cattle. Bryce and his wife, Gina, reside near Lecompton, Kansas, where they raised four children—Wyatt, Dylan, Jessye, and Kassidy. The Schumann family operates a commercial cattle operation alongside a registered Hereford herd, emphasizing sustainable, profitable production. Their operation markets performance and feed efficiency-tested seedstock to both domestic and international buyers, making them a trusted source of highquality genetics. With his vast network and proven

Kassidy Schumann is currently pursuing her master’s in business at Kansas State University after receiving her undergraduate degree in agricultural communications this fall. She was raised on a cow-calf operation in Lecompton, Kansas where she quickly gained a passion for everything agriculture, but specifically the Hereford cattle her

Rhyan Marshall is currently a junior at Kansas State University, preparing to enter her senior year, where she is pursuing a degree in Animal Science with a focus on Production Management. Alongside her degree, Rhyan has completed a minor in Agricultural Sales and is working toward a Beef Cattle Ranch Management Undergraduate Certificate. Outside of the classroom, Rhyan serves as an ASI Mentor, assisting with industry events and giving tours to prospective students. Additionally, she is the President of the Kansas State Collegiate Cattlewomen, where she

leads initiatives to promote education, positive outreach, and empower women in the beef industry. Rhyan also works part-time as a student worker at the 4-H Youth Development Office, expanding her experience in agricultural education and community engagement. Rooted in her faith, Rhyan is dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the agriculture community. This summer, as a Registrations Intern, she looks forward to growing, learning, and contributing to the industry she is passionate about.

Kirsten Heselmeyer, from Taylor, Texas, is currently a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, pursuing a degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications with a minor in Animal Science. She began her collegiate journey at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma, where she was a member of the livestock judging team and continues to compete for Nebraska. Kirsten

Get to Know the National Lassie Board, Part 2 This month, the Lassie Board is continuing our introductions of board members to help put faces with names. We are very excited about the direction the Lassies are moving and encourage anyone interested in or with questions about the Lassies to reach out to any of us! Tawana Holland currently serves as the National Lassie Association President. She is a graduate of East Central University and currently teaches 3rd-5th grade for Comet Academy – Epic Charter Schools. Tawana and her husband, Don, and daughter, Kimberly, raise Shorthorn cattle in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. She loves spending time with all of her children and grandchildren, gardening, and all things Shorthorn. Sydney Miller is the National Shorthorn Lassie Assoc. Secretary. She resides in Charlotte, Michigan and together with her parents, Matt and Tara, operates Narrow Brook Shorthorns. Sydney served as the National Alternate Lassie Queen for 2013-2014 reign. She has been an active member of the national association for over a decade

and helped to facilitate many changes over those years. She is actively involved with the Michigan Lassie Association as well. Outside of the Lassies, Sydney has previously served on the state breeders’ association board and formerly was the state advisor fwor the Michigan Junior Shorthorn Association. Jacalyn Meisner is from Illinois and serves as the National Lassie Vice President and President of the Illinois Shorthorn Lassies. Her passion for agriculture and the Shorthorn breed started early growing up as a 5th generation Shorthorn breeder, she was the Tri County Shorthorn Lassie Princess in 2004–2005 and went on to become the Illinois Shorthorn Lassie Queen in 2005–2006. These days, she herds students as the Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor at Blue Ridge High School in Farmer City, IL, where she’s helping grow the next generation of ag leaders. After serving as the 2022-2023 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen, Paige Wickard from Indiana joined the National Association board as a director. She has been showing Shorthorn cattle

for 14 years with much success alongside her family. Paige recently graduated from Anderson University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and currently works as a registered nurse. Paige is currently engaged and counting down the days to their wedding this fall. She hopes to continue raising Shorthorn cattle and being involved with the Shorthorn industry with her future family. Last but certainly not least, Harley Shelton serves as a director on the National Association board. Harley served as the 2021-2022 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. Harley is from Lubbock, Texas where she was raised showing steers and heifers. She developed an early love for the Shorthorn breed. Harley is currently attending Texas Tech University working on her Doctor of Pharmacy. She is still active in the Association and excels in helping develop the younger generation! Harley is excited for the time to come when her nieces are old enough to show and hopefully follow in her footsteps as a Lassie!

It’s time to plan the celebrations and congratulate all National Show Award winners! Point amounts are based on the designated show level. Award Recognition Overall Regional winners in each region will receive an award at the 2025 ASA Annual Meeting Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri. Regional division winners and runner-up division animals are recognized in Shorthorn Country but will not receive additional recognition. If a division is not listed, that means there were no eligible animals for that specific division.

Regional Qualifications To qualify for Regional Points, an animal must be exhibited at a minimum of two (2) shows within the region. Any combination of the following shows will meet the regional qualifications: • Regional Show • Super Regional Show • National Show within the designated region Only shows that are attended within a given region count toward that region’s points. A National Show within a region will count toward Regional Points, but Regional Shows do not count toward National Points. Points earned at individual shows can be viewed through the “Show Points” page by members on DigitalBeef. This page is updated throughout the show season as results are processed by ASA staff. To be awarded the Regional Show Bull or Regional Show Female of the Year, an animal must also win a division within that region. In the event a regional show does not use the provided ASA Division breaks, the following policy will be used: Any points that an animal receives at a regional show where ASA division breaks are not used, the animal and points will be moved to the proper division that the animal qualifies for based on ASA Show Classifications.

A Summer of Learning, Leading and Lifelong Connections Youth Conference, where we will be collaborating with the American Junior Simmental Association, American Junior Chianina Association, North American Limousin Junior Association, and the American Junior Gelbvieh Association. At this event, juniors will engage with industry leaders, discuss issues regarding the cattle and agriculture industry, and gain insights into personal and professional development. This event provides the opportunity for individuals to create lifelong connections and memories with peers. Registration is open now through April 30 for the early bird rate of $300, after this date the fee will be $375. Registration closes on June 5th. These two events provide the opportunity for juniors to expand their knowledge of the industry we care so much about. Whether it be in the show ring, a workshop, or meeting with peers around you, it is guaranteed to be a summer that will not be forgotten. With summer just ahead, be sure to mark these events on your calendar, and be ready to experience the best that the AJSA has to offer.

Summer is almost upon us, and with it comes two of the most exciting events for American Junior Shorthorn Association members—the National Junior Shorthorn Show and the IGS Summit Youth Conference. These events bring together juniors from across the country for an unforgettable time filled with competition, learning, and personal growth. Whether you’re stepping into the show ring in Grand Island, Nebraska, or engaging in leadership development in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this summer promises to be one to remember. Each year, the Shorthorn Junior National serves as one of the highlights of my summer. Shorthorn families come together for a week of competition, education, and lifelong memories to be made. This year, we will be heading to Grand Island, NE, where we will showcase our cattle, participate in contests, and have a blast doing all things Shorthorn. Even if you’re not showing an animal, you can participate in the other contests. The fun does not stop there for AJSA members, as we will be heading to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 20th-23rd for the AJSA Summit

JUNIOR BOARD CANDIDATES

Maggie Bass is currently attending Kansas State University where she is majoring in Agricultural Education with a minor in Animal Science. She previously grew her Shorthorn herd to 20 cow-calf pairs prior to college. Since then, she has scaled back due to being away from home. Her goal after college is to operate her own herd with competitive show cattle genetics. She is the daughter of Melinda Bass of Burrton, Kansas. Maggie was homeschooled throughout high school but stayed active in 4H as well as the Kansas Shorthorn Association. She recently served as an Alternate National Lassie Queen. She is involved at KSU in the agricultural education club and during her time at Hutchinson Community College was part of the Collegiate Farm Bureau. “I want to be a role model for the younger youth and serve and the junior association” Maggie said. “It gives me a platform to continue my involvement and promotion of the great Shorthorn breed. I have made many connections, and this will help me continue building those relationships.”

Cole Brus is graduating from St. Paul Public High School this year and plan to attend Northeast Community College to participate in their building 40

construction program. Cole received his first Shorthorn heifer for a 4H cattle project for his county fair. After hearing about his family’s history in the breed and exhibiting his docile heifer, he knew that he didn’t want anything else but Shorthorn in his herd. He is the son of Keith and Christy Brus of Wolbach, Nebraska. Cole has been involved in his community serving as a student teacher for summer programs, helping with prescribed burns and the Eagle Scout project. He has been involved with his local FFA chapter serving in several officer positions. He has also played a part in growing the Nebraska Junior Shorthorn Association after it had dwindled to just a few members. “When I think about what the junior board is and what I believe it should be, I think of a group of nine young adults who are passionate and incredibly enthusiastic about the Shorthorn breed,” Cole said. “I believe if I am given the honor of being a member of this group, I would fit right in. After attending the junior national in Kansas City, I decided I would do my best to one day wear a red coat.”

Kaylee Corley is currently attending Sam Houston State University majoring in science with the goal of becoming a dermatologist. She started her involvement in the livestock industry about six years ago. Since that time, she has developed a passion for the cattle industry. Although she didn’t start out in the breed, it didn’t take her long to decide that was the breed for her. Kaylee is the daughter of Brittney Corley of Willis, Texas. Kaylee served as chairman of the Montgomery Country Fair Junior

Committee. She has become involved in the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association and AJSA. She has also been involved with Texas FFA. These organizations have given her leadership skills. “Serving on the American Junior Shorthorn Association board would allow me pursue my passion of leadership, youth development, and serving my community,” Kaylee said. “The junior board involvement has a large impact on the youth development of the Shorthorn breed. Becoming a junior board member would allow me the opportunity to walk alongside junior members as they are being molded into who they want to be.”

Gracie Giles graduates from Anderson County High School this year. Upon graduation she plans to attend Oklahoma State University where she plans to dual major in Agribusiness and Agricultural Communications with a minor in meat science. She hopes to work as a marketing specialist for a livestock association after graduation. Over the years, Gracie has focused heavily on growing her involvement in Shorthorn production. She utilizes embryo transfer and recently had a high conception rate. This has helped her expand quality genetics. She is the daughter of Robert and Gracie Giles of Clinton, Tennessee. Gracie has been highly involved with the Tennessee Junior Shorthorn Association, Tennessee Youth Cattlemen’s Association, Loudon County Youth Livestock Producers, and FFA. As a member of the TN Youth Cattlemen’s Association, she promotes the Shorthorn breed by encouraging breeders to incorporate Shorthorn cattle into their herd. She has held many leadership offices during her involvement with the many organizations.

“From my very first step into the Shorthorn breed and the National Junior Shorthorn Show, the junior board of directors made me feel like I belonged,” Gracie said. “I was a shy 12-year-old girl, seeking to find her place in the world. The junior board saw beyond my banner count and background. They saw value in every single junior member. Now I want to give the same feeling to others. It is my turn to help guide the future generation of the AJSA.”

Nathan Hill is currently at Indiana Agriculture and Technology School. After graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in agricultural business. Although Nathan has only been involved in the cattle industry for the last seven years, he has continued to grow his herd, even marketing cattle nationwide. He is the son of Matt and Erin Hill of Yorktown, Indiana. Nathan has served as an office for the Indiana Junior Shorthorn Association for the last five years. He started livestock judging at a young age with an FFA chapter. He has been pursuing a drone operator license and has assisted his grandfather with his production Angus herd, particularly Indiana Beef Evaluation Program Bulls. He also works full time for a large grain farm as well as balancing school and his cattle herd. “Attending our first Shorthorn junior national in Lebanon, Tennessee, was an eye-opening experience,” Nathan said. “The junior national is what sparked my passion for the cattle industry. It was where I realize I had a strong quality to network and connect with people across the country. I believe this quality will assist me in a leadership position within the breed.”

Jack Jordan currently attends Oklahoma State University majoring in Animal Science, Pre-Vet. He plans

to attend vet school and specialize in production animals. Jack has worked with three generations of the family operation, Waukaru. When he was old enough for 4H, he began to show Shorthorn heifers. Outside of the show ring, he works year-round with all aspects of their farm from herd health to breeding season or preparing for their annual sales. He is the son of Toby and Jodi Jordan of Rensselaer, Indiana. Jack is currently the pledge class president of the OSU FarmHouse fraternity, which is recognized for academic excellence. He has attended the IGS Youth Leadership Summit Conference and competed in many NJSS contests over the years. He served in officer positions for his local 4H club and was active in various sports during high school. He currently holds the record for Rensselaer Central High School for pole vault after breaking the 39-year-old record. “I grew up appreciating the Shorthorn junior board members for the care, time and effort they took to not only facilitate activities, but also to reach out and connect with the juniors and their families,” Jack said. “These are qualities I admire and try to emulate myself. Youth today have a lot of choices when it comes to showing cattle; what makes our breed and our National Junior Shorthorn Show so consistently spectacular are the people planning it, and I want to further this tradition.”

In sitting in those meetings learning more about the candidates running, I knew that I wanted to be one of them. I feel that I have built the skills of what it takes to be on the AJSA board of directors. They have an amazing team and I feel that I will be an asset to this.”

3 OPEN POSITIONS Tatumn Poff will be graduating from Chardon High School this year as well as graduating from Lakeland Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree. After graduation she plan to attend the Ohio State University to major in Agricultural Communications and Political Science. She hopes to go into Public Policy. Tatumn found a love for the Shorthorn breed after attending the NJSS in Lebanon, Tennessee. She shows market steers, and she believes in what the breed contributes not only to the show ring but the food chain. She is the daughter of Rick and Kim Poff of Chardon, Ohio. Tatumn is currently serving as an office for the Ohio Junior Shorthorn Association board. She is involved in several local 4H clubs, serving in officer positions. She is the chair of the newly

Eligible seats are elected each summer during the Youth Conference at the National Junior Shorthorn Show by their peers to lead the organization and carry out activities, programs, and events for the association. With the mission to positively impact the leaders of tomorrow and today by committing themselves to the Shorthorn breed, its members, and each other, makes this a tremendous opportunity for learning about teamwork, responsibility and leadership. Retiring board members will pass off their red jacket during the awards ceremony Friday, June 27.

Online entries will include entry fee (per show) and stalling/bedding fee for each animal in the barns and tieouts, exhibitor fee, and additional options. Entries must be paid online at time of entry or they will not be processed. There will be NO refunds on entries. See General Rule #6. Entry fee is $45 per show entry if completed by deadline of May 1. If you are showing an animal in more than one show it must be entered for each show. There is a $50 stalling/bedding fee per head. Electricity – People should come prepared with generators and extension cords. All generators must be housed outside. No generators or gas cans will be allowed inside the barn and must meet local fire codes for inspection by fire marshall. Exhibitors are reminded that portacools and butt fans are not allowed in the barns. Pets are allowed on the fairgrounds, but NOT in the arena/show ring area for any reason or at any time. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. In accordance with grounds policy and this youth event, consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited. If the junior member is unable to show their animal due illness or health, follow the procedure in the show rules. See General Rules #4, #5, #13. Animals will NOT be allowed to enter the show ring after the judge has given the signal to walk. See general show rule #18. Cattle will be allowed on the fairgrounds on Saturday, June 21, in tie outs ONLY after 5:00 p.m. Cattle will be allowed in barns after 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 22. All cattle must tie out in designated area. You can not tie outside during the day after check-in is completed. All cattle must stay on grounds and in the barns during the day. Must bring registration papers and health papers to the show for check-in. We will not verify tattoos at check-in but animals tattoo must match the corresponding registration papers. Entries not matching will be disqualified from show. See general rule #9. ONLY steers will be weighed at check-in. Individual contests including showmanship, speech and career development contests MUST be entered during online entry. Showmanship and livestock judging entries will not be accepted at unior national. Video entries can be made by any age division and judged separately. Entries must be a video in portrait/vertical mode. They must be a maximum of 60 seconds. Due on May 15 via online contest entry form.

ALL Entries must be emailed by May 15 to online contest entry form. Entries will not be accepted at NJSS.

SPEECH CONTEST

ALL speech participants must submit a video giving their speech by May 15 to contests@shorthorn.org. Judges will evaluate the submitted videos for the age divisions with more than 15 participants. The judges will select a top 15 that will compete at junior national for placing. The top 15 will be notified if they have made it to the placing round. The elimination round and placing round will each have a different set of judges. Senior Topic: How does performance data impact the cattle industry as a whole? Intermediate Topic: How can social media positively or negatively impact the cattle industry? PII Topic: Why should agriculture be incorporated into all school curriculum (core subject)? PI Topic: What makes the Shorthorn breed ‘Groovy’?

SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST

Showmanship participants are required to enter online during cattle entry to be eligible to participate. We will not accept entries at junior national. The showmanship heats will have exhibitors randomized in their age divisions. Exhibitors must use the same animal for the entire contest. Seniors will no longer fit during finals.

How is High Point Award Calculated? The purpose of the High Point Contest is to recognize the top five AJSA exhibitors in each age division for their participation and placing in contests throughout the week. The point system breakdown can be found at juniorshorthorn.org. Exhibitors receive points for each contest they choose to participate in during the week of NJSS. They also will receive additional points for placing in these contests. Points are only based on participation and placing, not scoresheet totals. Ties for all age divisions and states will be broken based on the number of higher placing contests.

It was a great day in The Valley. The largest ever crowd gathered at the sale site to view the bulls on display and then jammed the beautiful sale facility to make their selections. The bulls offered this year were of the highest quality and the auction reflected that fact. Bidding was super active throughout the entire sale from the seats as well as from those on the internet. When the snappy sale concluded, there were smiles all around. Congratulations to Paint Valley, Byland Polled Shorthorns and Beckler Shorthorns for putting together a truly outstanding set of bulls for progressive Shorthorn breeders to evaluate. $22,000 - Lot 41 - Byland Unique 4EL70. A roan, polled March 7, 2024 son of Byland Elite 2SD66 and out of Byland Augusta 7G138. What a bull here. This one had an unequalled combination of calving ease and performance traits. His EPD line had indexes in the top of the breed. On top of that, he was very easy to look at. He was a smooth moving bull with a good foot and bone. This was a big, stout bull with great performance numbers. He had a 1331 YW with a YW EPD of 108 to go with a little added frame. His natural thickness and depth of rib make his profile one everyone liked. The dam’s side of his pedigree is a leading female line at JSF in North Dakota. This is a really good 1872 son. News & Notes Farewells Wendy Lynn Young, age 57, of Nazareth, Texas, went to be with her Heavenly Father on March 5, 2025. Wendy was born on August 26, 1967, in Houston, Texas, the beloved daughter of Glen and Joann Bulls. She grew up in Earth, Texas, and graduated from Springlake-Earth High School in 1985. Wendy met the love of her life, Steve Young, in Amarillo, and they married on September 7, 2002. Together, they moved to Nazareth, where they raised their two boys, Brett and Will Young. After attending South Plains College and West Texas A&M University, Wendy obtained her teaching degree and embarked on a career spanning over

two decades. She was in her 23rd year of teaching Special Education and was currently teaching at Tulia Elementary. Wendy also shared her passion for teaching at 6 other schools throughout the Texas Panhandle. She was deeply committed to her students and loved children, always showing her affection to them and leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Wendy treasured visiting Oklahoma, being on the farm, and raising cows. Her greatest joy was watching Brett and Will play football, baseball, and show cattle. Wendy was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Lola and Joe Leon “Bill” Middleton; paternal grandparents, Crill and Minnie Bulls; maternal uncle, Gerald Middleton; cousin, Scott Middleton; and parentsin-law, Boyd and Kay Young. Wendy will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Steve; her sons,

Brett Young (Sidney) and Will Young; her parents, Glen and Joann Bulls; her brother, Clay Bulls (Melissa); her brother-in-law, Layne Young (Jamie); as well as her nieces, Abbie Bulls, Anndee Young (Brennan), Brystol and Hadlee Skaggs; her nephews, Jonah and Ethan Bulls, Landry Young, and Jace Watkins; and other beloved family members. Wendy was very much loved by her dearest friends Karen Harmon, Ranell Ansley, and Susan Murray, along with many others who cherished her presence in their lives. Wendy was also loved by her countless friends and colleagues. Robert “Bob” Gene Duis, 76, of Grant Park, Illinois, passed on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025 at Fairview Haven Nursing Home in Fairbury, Illinois. Bob was born October 22nd, 1948, in Watseka to Carl M. and Engelina J. (Wienrank) Duis. He was a graduate of Donovan High School and the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. After college, he returned to the family farm near Donovan where he was a grain farmer and cattle producer. Throughout his tenure in the industry, he raised many champions on a state and

national level. He was particularly proud of raising the grand champion steer of both the junior and open shows at the Illinois State Fair. He also bred, raised, or owned many successful females and bulls at the state and national level in the Shorthorn and Chiania breeds. He was a longtime supporter of junior livestock exhibitors nationwide. He enjoyed fishing, breakfast at the coffee shop with his friends, and hosting hunters on the farm property. After his retirement, he could often be found assisting with farm operations, at the local elevator watching the grain markets, or at the sale barn in Milford. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Nancy, and his longtime companion of 30 years, Jody LaFond.

He is survived by his three children: Julie (Dustin) Blunier of Hanna City, IL; Robbie (Chelsea) Duis of Petersburg, IL; Kate (Dennis Paras) Duis of Cheverly, MD; and their mother, Paula (Wall) Duis of Champaign, IL. Grandchildren Avery, Landon, and Delaney Blunier; Addison Duis; and Owen Paras. Sisters Linda Ash and Kathy Anderson, several nieces and a nephew. He is also survived by his godson, Mike (Christy) Duis of Sheldon who over the last few years played a large role with the day to day operations of the farm. Memorials can be made to the Iroquois County Fair Beef Department.

James “Jim” Ted Aegerter was born September 21, 1952 to Theodore “Ted” and Phyllis (Beckman) Aegerter in Seward, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. He attended Seward High School, graduating in 1971, and then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He moved to Byers, Colorado where he served as herdsman for the Schuman Ranch, one of the largest Shorthorn cattle ranches at that time. He returned to Seward in 1973 and began working at Engler Clothing and continued to maintain his father’s Shorthorn cattle herd. He was united in marriage to Debby Schaefer on May 31, 1975. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this May. In 1985, he and his wife purchased Engler Clothing and renamed it Jim’s Clothing. They worked side by side until 1991. Jim then began a new career in the trucking industry, initially working for Husker Express in Seward and then Crete Carrier Corporation in Lincoln until his retirement in 2017. Jim had many passions that he finally had time to enjoy. He loved his time at their cabin on Willow Bend Lake near Central City. Here, he spent countless hours perfecting their yard and beach. He taught his kids how to water ski and loved to pull them with the boat around the lake. He and Debby enjoyed their time at the lake and hanging out with their cabin neighbors, taking golf cart rides, and tipping back a Silver Bullet or two. If you ever visited Jim at their acreage North of Seward, it was immediately evident how much pride he took in his home, yard and landscape. Rarely was there a blade of grass out of

place and their landscape was beautiful. He was most proud of his kids and his granddaughter. When his daughter was working for the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, he never missed a show. When his son began his work as a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, he couldn’t wait to brag about his success. Jim enjoyed his granddaughter’s ballgames, music programs and dance recitals, but he was over the moon when she began following in his footsteps as a gifted equestrian. He rarely missed a barrel race and lit up when he would watch her run. Jim has friends from across the country, but one group of individuals that would become life-long friends are the members of the Directors of the National Junior Shorthorn Association. Jim was elected to the first board in 1969 and served a three year term. He was honored to serve as part of this history making group. Spending weekends and long weeks at various Nebraska lakes was one of his highlights each summer. One of those lakes was Johnson Lake, lovingly referred to as J-Lake. The “J-Lake Crew” is made up of some of Jim’s closest friends and family members. He had a love for his family and a special place in his heart for his animals. He showed several champion steers including DJ, Champion steer at the 1970 Nebraska State Fair, Swede, Champion Steer at the1965 Chicago International Livestock Show and a host of others. His beloved Shetland Pony, Gun Smoke and Buckskin Quarter Horse, King, molded him into an incredible horseman. Thanks to his kids, Jim had four dogs and 2 names; his Australian Shepherd, Angel #2, traveled everywhere with him. Jim’s circle of friends is large and each one of them, in every stage of his life, were important. He had a gift for making friends wherever he went—and

keeping them. From his childhood best friend who, in a poetic twist, became his brother-in-law, to his high school buddies, cattle and horse friends, and everyone in between, he never forgot the people who shaped his life, and they never forgot him. Jim was a hard working, caring and loving man. His attention to detail was impeccable and he leaves behind a great legacy because of the man he was. Jim passed away on April 19, 2025 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 29 days. He is survived by his wife Debby, daughter Christy (Derek) Farnstrom, Hebron, Nebraska, son, Clint (Taylor) Aegerter, Omaha, Nebraska; granddaughter, Riley Farnstrom, Hebron, Nebraska. Sisters, Pam (Mark) Bronson, Fort Worth, Texas, Kay (Mike) Hartman, Tecumseh, Nebraska. Brother, Jeff (Darla) Aegerter, Seward, Nebraska. Father-in-law, John (Jane) Schaefer, Seward, Nebraska. Aunt, Betty Aegerter, Seward, Nebraska. Also celebrating his memory are many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Phyllis and Ted, his motherin-law, Joan Schaefer, step mother-inlaw, Lee (Hall) Schaefer, brother-in-law, Mike Schaefer, niece, Leslie Schaefer. He was also greeted in heaven by his uncles and aunts, Harold (Ruthie), Arden (Betty Jane), Mervin (Jane), Gene (Delores), and Jack Aegerter, Don (Alvina) and Leon Beckman, as well as special friends, Bob and Willa Freeland and a host of other family and friends.

Loren Chesnut, 89, of Fithian passed away at 5:41 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2025) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Loren was born Sept. 25, 1935, in Danville, the son of Henry and Berice (Stewart) Chesnut. He married

Mary Jo Burke on March 6, 1960, in Danville. She preceded him in death on April 16, 2016. He is survived by his children, Gary (Michelle) Chesnut and Lori (Raymond) Campbell, both of Fitihian; six grandchildren, Jerri Pine, Holly Milton, Travis Campbell, Chris Chesnut, Tyler Campbell and Hank Chesnut; and four great-grandchildren, Jobe Pine, Kade Pine, Charlie Milton and Dylan Milton. He was preceded in death by his

parents. Loren farmed in the Fithian area all of his life. He also raised cattle and showed Shorthorn cattle. Loren loved to go fishing and traveling to Canada to fish. He was a member of the Ogden Christian Church and attended Hope UCC Church.

Iowa Shorthorn Association Honorary Breeder - Joe Laban Joe started into the Shorthorn breed in 1956 with a 4-H project. In the 1960’s his family bought their first purebred Shorthorn cows. He took a short break from cattle to servein the Navy from 1965-1968. After Joe married his wife Linda in 1970 they moved to a farm outside of Bernard, Iowa and called it Roanoke becuase of the roan cattle and oak trees. Laban Roanoke Farm became highly invested in the Shorthorn breed and worked hard to improve their genetics by buying herd sires from dominant breeders such as McMartin herd in Minnesota, Gold Mine Farms in Iowa, Studer Shorthorns in Iowa, Hi-View Farms in Wisconsin and Glendale Farms in Missouri. In the 1980s, Laban Roanoke Farm started AI-ing and raising their own herd sires. Joe and his family continued to raise high-quality Shorthorns up until the fall of 2024. At the time of selling, two of the original cow families were still part of the herd, which were Jesamine and Devrgoil. Laban Roanoke Farms has sold calves that have gone on to become State and Regional Champsions, including San Antonio, Minnesota State Fair, Iowa State Fair, Indiana State Fair, and many other state and county fairs.

Joe and Linda have many memories along the way, including raising a family of 8 children, Ann, Carrie, John, Paula, James, Jeffrey, Jacob and Mary, who were all invlovled in 4-H and the Shorthorn breed growing up. Joe also served on the Shorthorn board for several years and was a voting delegate for Iowa at the National Shorthorn Annual Meeting in Louisville,

Ky. Joe has been extremely involved in the Iowa Shorthorn Association over the years including helping with the Annual Banquet and Iowa Royal Sale. The Iowa Shorthorn Association is proud to have Joe Laban and his family as the 2025 Honorary Breeders.
