Don’t let your membership lapse! Make sure you pay your annual membership fee by April 1, 2026. If you are a TOC Member and your membership is not paid by April 1, 2026, you will become a WHR Member when you renew your membership.
1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2026 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2026.)
2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2026 to an assessed 2026 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months)
*Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.
The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline is April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2026 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.
Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.
3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal
2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number
3. A barcode number for each animal tested
Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Montie D. Soules asa executive secretary/CEO
The first two months of the year are always busy in the Shorthorn business, but January and February of 2026 have been especially active. Many of you have been on the road, and so has the ASA staff, with three national shows in January, followed by the NCBA CattleCon Convention and Trade Show, and then the final national show of the season, the Dixie National in Jackson, Mississippi. That is a tremendous amount of travel in a short period of time—not only for staff, but for breeders and families from across the country who make these events possible.
One of the highlights of this stretch of the show season continues to be the Pen and E.D.G.E. shows at both Cattlemen’s Congress and the National Western in Denver. The importance of these events has grown significantly over the years. Proof of this was in the quanitity of spectators at the pen and E.D.G.E. shows at both locations, which speaks volumes about where industry interest is today. At Cattlemen’s Congress, we also saw an extraordinary number of firsttime exhibitors in the pen show, which is encouraging for the future of these events and the future of the breed.
The Denver Pen Show featured one of the strongest sets of Shorthorn bulls we have ever exhibited at that venue. Many exhibitors in both the pen show and the E.D.G.E. show have sales scheduled this winter and spring. Because our deadlines for Shorthorn Country fall after most advertising deadlines, several of those sales had already taken place as this article was written. The shows reported in this issue are about more than banners and champions; they represent breeders bringing their programs to town and putting their cattle on display for the industry and potential buyers. The cost of exhibiting cattle is high, and those who do so are helping showcase the Shorthorn breed to the broader cattle
industry. That effort benefits all of us. This year brought remarkable results following the shows. The highestpriced Shorthorn bull ever sold at auction—$320,000—came from the Champion Pen of Five at the Denver Shorthorn Pen Show. Another example was the high-selling Lot 1 bull in a recent sale, offered as a 50% semen interest. That bull was the Champion of the E.D.G.E. Performance Show in Denver and sold for $46,000 for 50%, placing nearly a $100,000 valuation on him. For anyone who says displaying cattle at these shows does not pay, the results suggest otherwise. More importantly, these outcomes reflect the added value we are seeing in the Shorthorn breed, with many more sales still to come.
Yes, the overall cattle market is high, and commercial prices have helped lift seedstock values. But the real story is the growing acceptance of Shorthorn cattle in the commercial industry. While highend lots make headlines, the heart of any sale is found in the averages and the number of bulls sold. When Shorthorn breeders can sell 100 bulls in one setting at record averages—even with the top individual removed—that represents real-world demand for Shorthorn genetics. In several cases this winter, commercial producers left sales without a bull simply because they were unwilling to meet the market price. Quality still remains the key. In my own experience as a breeder, I never had trouble selling a good one—I simply needed to produce more good ones. Early bull sales this season are proving that point again.
This brings us back to the longstanding rule of thumb: a herd bull should be worth the value of three fat steers. Packers are targeting finished steers weighing 1,600 to 1,800 pounds, putting their value near $4,000 to $4,500 each. That places a realistic bull value range of $10,000 to $14,000. Yet many purebred buyers still expect to find
herd bulls in the $5,000 range. Budget limitations are real, but price and quality are closely tied. Just as important, bull selections must fit the genetic needs of your cow herd, with performance data, EPDs, and indexes aligned with your goals. While numbers are an important factor, let’s not forget about the structural integrity of the animal.
With cow numbers low nationwide, market highs are likely to persist for the next year or two. This creates opportunity and responsibility for purebred breeders. It may be time to clean up the bottom end of herds, focus more intently on quality, and align breeding programs with real-world demands. While this may reduce overall numbers, it positions the breed for long-term sustainability and greater acceptance in the commercial marketplace.
March is an important time for strategic planning. Take time to assess your goals, evaluate your genetics, and recommit to quality-first decisionmaking with long-term return in mind. Demand for quality—from consumers and producers—continues to grow. As Shorthorn breeders, we can position ourselves as leaders by providing cattle that combine performance data with phenotype and functionality. When the show ring and the commercial marketplace stay connected to the real world, the future of the Shorthorn breed is bright.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Convention and Trade Show, also known as CattleCon, kicked off on February 3, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. The first day is always exciting as we arrive to set up the Shorthorn booth and anticipate the steady flow of cattlemen and women exploring the trade show. Traffic was up, and there was a record-breaking number of attendees.
The following day, Montie, Heather, and Shelby visited with 701X staff to learn more about potential updates we may see in the registry. Also in attendance were former ASA Board Member and President Joe Bales, who spent time in the booth answering questions, visiting breeders, and sharing valuable industry insight, along with former ASA board
member and ASA president, Toby Jordan, who stopped by while attending CattleCon. Victoria Thompson, AJSA Board Member, also made a visit to the booth!
Shelby also participated in the Livestock Publications Council (LPC) luncheon, which offered business updates and valuable networking opportunities with industry media and partners. There was a large crowd in attendance, and LPC members heard from the incoming NCBA President and CEO of Solvet, a sponsor for the luncheon.
CattleCon continues to be an outstanding setting for filming new episodes of the Shorthorn Bull Pen Podcast, as industry professionals and experts gather in one central
location. Be sure to watch for upcoming episodes featuring guests from US Meat Export Federation, CattleMax, ASA and more.
We continue to witness the Shorthorn breed on the rise. Attending this event is one way to help spread the good word what Shorthorns can do for the beef industry. We hope to see everyone again next year at this wonderful event back in Nashville!

In 2000, Crow Creek Farms ended forty-five years of raising polled Hereford cattle and began a registered Shorthorn herd. Jerrell and Stephanie’s children, Jobie and Ethan Crow, began showing 4-H heifers at local shows, as well as the Oklahoma Youth Expo, Oklahoma State Fair, and Tulsa State Fair. As the herd grew, Jerrell’s parents, Terrell and Sue Crow, took on management of the herd during their retirement.
Jerrell, Stephanie, and Steven became active in the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association. Jerrell and Stephanie also became involved in the Junior Association when Ethan served as president. Jerrell and Steven both served on the board of directors, with Jerrell serving as OSA President and Steven serving as Secretary-Treasurer for many years.
The Crow family was blessed to be mentored by Jim and Beverly Freed, Sammy and Wilma Richardson, Tom and Sharon Herje, and Mike and Shirley Stevens. Eager to learn the show-cattle side of raising Shorthorns, the family soon began traveling to major shows from Denver to Louisville. Summer vacations became trips to Junior Nationals. In 2008, Jerrell, Stephanie, and Steven assisted Jim and Beverly Freed in fundraising and directing the National Junior Shorthorn Show in Lawton, Oklahoma. In 2018, the Crow family led a team of Oklahoma members to fund and organize the National Junior Shorthorn Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Jobie was voted Junior Breeder of the Year in 2011. Ethan was named ASA Herdsman of the Year in 2019. Jerrell served as a member of the ASA Board of Directors, and Steven has served as ASA General Counsel for the past ten years.
The Crow family has excelled in raising and showing both purebred and Plus bulls. They have exhibited national champions at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, the American Royal in Kansas City, and the Fort Worth Stock Show. In addition, the family has exhibited Grand Champion bulls at the Kansas State Fair, Tri-State Fair in Amarillo, Oklahoma State Fair, and Tulsa State Fair. The Crows are the only family in breed history to exhibit

both the Purebred and Plus “Show Bull of the Year” in the same year. Through both good and challenging times, the Crow family has consistently encouraged and supported young people, helping them become part of the

Shorthorn family. Congratulations to Crow Creek Farms on being the Cattlemen’s Congress Show Honoree.

Cates of Modoc, Ind., earned Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Bull and Champion Senior Bull Calf honors.
Reserve Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Bull and Champion
Junior Bull award went to 3BC
Executive Class 415 owned by Jaycee Schomberg of Pierce, Neb.
Grand Champion ShorthornPlus
Female and Champion Early Spring Heifer Calf honors went to Benjamin P Allen of Saxonburg, Pa. with S/N Nutty Mamma 5101N ET
Reserve Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Female and Reserve
Champion Early Spring Heifer Calf was S/N Nacho Mamma 5100N ET owned by Caroline Huebner of Union City, Tenn.
Judge Hoge had made a comment how similar the Grand and Reserve hefiers were and there’s a reason for that similarity! Fun fact is they are identical twins, same embryo. In rare cases, a single bovine embryo can naturally split during early development, resulting in identical (monozygotic) twins. That means: One embryo, Two calves, Same genetics, Same sex.

Horton Farms Shorthorns began in 1992 when Scott purchased seven bred Shorthorn cows from Bob Raisbeck of Hi-View Farms in Lancaster, Wisconsin. What started as a modest beginning quickly grew into a respected program built on quality cattle, sound genetics, and strong relationships. By 2000, Scott had expanded the herd to approximately 25 cows using influential sires such as CF Trump, WHR Sonny, and HS Rodeo Drive.
In 2002, Ryan Wernicke was hired as herdsman, and the Horton family became deeply involved in showing Shorthorns at the local, state, and national levels. Scott and Michele, along with daughters Stephanie, Katie, and Leah, proudly represented the Horton name in the show ring while marketing breeding stock nationwide. A defining moment came in 2004 at the family’s first National Junior Shorthorn Show in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Stephanie won Division Three Reserve Bred and Owned Heifer with HFS Duchess Kool Lady—sparking a lifelong passion for the breed.
Horton Farms achieved many notable accomplishments, including Leah Horton’s back-to-back National Junior Shorthorn Show Grand Champion Purebred Cow/Calf Pair titles in 2013 and 2014, Champion Pen of Three Heifers at the 2016 National Western Stock Show, Builder of the Breed honors in 2016, and numerous state and national championships earned by the Horton daughters.
In 2018, Scott was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Despite the challenges, he remained active in the Shorthorn community, continuing to attend shows and support junior programs. In 2020, he celebrated a Reserve Champion Pen of Three Heifers at the National Western Stock Show— an achievement that reflected his resilience and dedication.
Following Scott’s passing on January 14, 2025, the family remains committed to carrying his legacy forward. With new herdsman Buddy Haas, fresh genetics, and continued involvement in the breed, the future of Horton Farms Shorthorns is bright. Scott’s greatest legacy lives on through his family, the friendships he cherished, and the generations of Shorthorns yet to come.

Congratulations to the Horton Family on being recognized as Show Honoree for the 2026 National Western Stock Show, a fitting tribute to decades of dedication, excellence, and impact within the Shorthorn breed.

Following the show, attendees were invited to a Shorthorn Pen Crawl, where the sunny weather made for an enjoyable afternoon of visiting, cattle viewing, and fellowship.

Being elected to serve on the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors at the National Junior Shorthorn Show in Grand Island is an honor I am incredibly grateful for. When I first became involved in the AJSA, I never imagined it would lead to this opportunity. The junior Shorthorn program has shaped me not only as a cattle exhibitor, but as a leader and an individual. I am thankful to everyone who supported me and placed their trust in me, and I take the responsibility of representing our junior membership seriously.
One of the most rewarding parts of serving on the board has been the opportunity to travel and represent AJSA at national-level events across the country. Over the past year, I have attended events such as the Summit Conference in Pennsylvania, along with national shows in Louisville, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma City. These experiences have allowed me to see firsthand the strength of our junior program and the passion that exists within the Shorthorn
community nationwide. Each event has provided opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with juniors who share the same dedication to this breed.
Because of how impactful this experience has been, I want to encourage juniors to consider running for the AJSA Board of Directors at the 2026 NJSS in Abilene, Texas. Running for the board may seem intimidating at first, but you do not need to have everything figured out to be a great leader. What matters most is a willingness to serve, learn, and step outside your comfort zone. Serving on the board helps develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills that extend far beyond the show ring.
The future of the AJSA depends on juniors who are willing to lead. If you care about the Shorthorn breed, the people involved in it, and the opportunities AJSA provides, I hope you will consider taking that next step in Abilene. Serving on the board has already been one of the most meaningful experiences of my junior career, and I cannot recommend it enough.

When I say the Lassies had an amazing time at Cattlemen’s Congress, that may be an understatement. Last year was our first time hosting our Queen Contest during OKC, and we learned a few things along the way. We are excited to continue building this event into our major Lassie gathering of the year.
Thursday kicked off with interviews for our Queen candidates. The panel evaluated each young lady’s knowledge of the Shorthorn breed, the Lassie Association, and their general background. A huge thank you goes to our interview judges—Nancy Grathwohl Heter, Jeff Aegerter, and Vickie Duerre—and to our application reviewers—Amanda Gipe-McKeith, Jan Steck, and Brandi Strohman. Your thorough review, insight, and feedback make these events possible.
Later that afternoon, we had the incredible opportunity to attend The Royal Gathering at the Governor’s Mansion, hosted by our very own National Shorthorn Lassie Queen alumna, Blayne Arthur, who now serves as Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture. The event brought together breed royalty from both national and state levels, giving

our young ladies the chance to network and hear from several inspiring speakers. We ended the evening with a social hour that included Governor Kevin Stitt, major donors, the Cattlemen’s Congress board, and many breed directors.
Friday was a whirlwind with the Junior Purebred and Plus Shows, followed by the E.D.G.E. Show. Our candidates logged many miles in the ring under the direction of our wonderful 2025 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen, Brie Duerre.
On Saturday, we hosted our Annual Meeting and held officer elections. The candidates introduced themselves, and Brie shared her heartfelt goodbyes. We then attended the Pen Show and Social Hour before heading to McClintock’s for bonding, gifts, and great food. The evening concluded at The Summit Sale, where we were blown away by the caliber of cattle offered and the tremendous support shown for the National Lassie Association.
One of our major goals at The Summit was to fund new leather sashes for the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and the National Shorthorn Lassie. Thank you to Little Cedar Cattle Company

for purchasing the sponsorship and donating the Queen sash to Brie, and to Hannah Olson for purchasing the past Alternate sash. We also received an outstanding response in donations to Legacy 56. Additional thanks go to Cindy’s Livestock Photography, Cagwin Farms, and DTR Cattle Company for purchasing Brie’s baskets to support her travels.
On Sunday, we said our final farewell to Brie and crowned our newest royalty between the Plus and Purebred shows. Our 2026 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen is Miss Maysn Riggins of Illinois, and our 2026 National Shorthorn Lassie is Miss Sadie Cummons of Ohio. These young women will be exceptional representatives of the Shorthorn breed and the Lassie Association throughout the coming year and beyond.
Congratulations to our new royalty and to all exhibitors who helped make this year truly outstanding. Read more about our new royalty on the next page! Please feel free to contact the National Shorthorn Lassie Association via social media or email at shorthornlassies@gmail. com if you’d like to have our royalty at your events throughout the year.

National Shorthorn Lassie Queen –Masyn Riggins:
Hello everyone, my name is Masyn Riggins, the 18 year old daughter of Andy and Holly Riggins of Macomb, Illinois. I was crowned the 2026 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Sunday, January 11. I am currently a freshman at Kansas State University studying Animal Science— Management and Industry—with a concentration in Beef Reproduction.
Throughout the next year, I will be representing the Shorthorn breed at cattle shows and sales across the nation. I cannot thank my parents, sisters, and family enough for allowing me to chase my dreams. From traveling all over the country to shows, my family has been with me through it all. I would be remiss if I did not also thank the breeders of Illinois. Thank you for cheering me on every step of the way, embracing me with open arms, and supporting me through every opportunity. I cannot wait to make you all proud this year.
To the National Shorthorn Lassie Association, I step into this role with deep gratitude for those who have paved the way for me. To the American Shorthorn Association, thank you for always supporting the Lassies and allowing us to represent all that you— the breeders—stand for. And to the American Junior Shorthorn Association, while I have been in the ring for the past eleven years, being in the ring as your National Shorthorn Lassie Queen is especially meaningful.
Here’s to a year of making memories, congratulating hundreds of showmen, and meeting breeders at the backdrop.

For the first time, I am Masyn Riggins, your 2026 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen.
National Shorthorn Lassie – Sadie Cummons:
I am eighteen years old and live in southeastern Ohio with my parents, Thomas “Scott” and Courtney Cummons. I attend Gallia Academy High School, where I stay active in a wide range of extracurriculars, including football, soccer, wrestling, track and field, FFA, National Honor Society, and show choir.
After I graduate in May, I plan to attend The Ohio State University to major in agricultural studies and compete on the collegiate livestock judging team.
I am a fifth generation farmer and have been involved in the Shorthorn industry my entire life.
I have proudly represented the Ohio Shorthorn Lassie Association since 2017 and have truly enjoyed serving Ohio’s juniors, members, and breeders. I am now incredibly excited for the opportunity to represent the Shorthorn community across the nation as the 2026 National Shorthorn Lassie.
I would like to dedicate my reign to Melvin Clair Bye of Bye Well Shorthorns, who encouraged me to join the Lassie program many years ago. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout my Lassie journey.

Dr. Raymond “Doc” Ediger, devoted husband, father, grandfather, veterinarian, scientist, cattleman, mentor, and community servant, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on January 26, 1936, in Bethany, Oregon, he was the son of David and Lucille Cook Ediger. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 1961. He remained a proud alumnus throughout his life and was honored with the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine 2023 Alumni Award for Excellence in Practice.
Dr. Ediger’s 64-year career in veterinary medicine began in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, where he served at the First U.S. Army Medical Laboratory in NYC and the Fort Detrick Biological Laboratories in Frederick. In 1964, he became Director of the Fort Detrick Animal Production Facility. During his 15-year tenure, he transformed the facility into one of the premier animal research centers in the U.S., pioneering procedures for germ-free laboratory animal colonies. He was recognized for the first large-scale production of nude athymic mice, which have been extremely valuable in cancer research. His innovations in caging, automatic watering, diet formulation, air handling, facility design, and attention to animals’ psychological well-being established a gold standard in the field.
A Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Dr. Ediger authored 33 scientific papers that have been published in 30 languages worldwide, contributed to book chapters in lab animal books, and was the invited speaker at numerous scientific conferences. His 1974 Laboratory Animal Science paper, which identified Citrobacter freundii biotype 4820 as the cause of colitis in mice, established the animal model used to study Crohn’s and irritable bowel diseases in humans.
In 1976, he established the National Institutes of Health Animal Facilities Diagnostic Laboratory in Bethesda. The following year, he joined the Maryland Department of Agriculture as State Veterinary Epidemiologist. Under his leadership, Maryland was declared Brucellosis-free. He initiated one of the nation’s first Johne’s disease eradication programs, helped develop the Maryland Scrapie eradication program, established MAPS and standard operating procedures for animal health inspectors, and played a vital role-working with APHIS-in eradicating the first avian influenza outbreak in the Del-Mar-
Va region. In 1998, he was named the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Most Outstanding Employee of the Year. He served on many Institutional Animal Care and Use Committeesamong them USAMRIID (29 years), USAMBL, Bionetics, Cambrex, BioWittaker, Southern Research Institute, and Tonix Pharmica-and was active in accreditation inspections for laboratory facilities across the United States. He chaired and taught many professional, collegiate, and academic courses, including serving as clinical instructor for the Virginia-Maryland Regional Veterinary School, on the Veterinary Technician Course at Essex Community College, in Laboratory Animal Science at the Uniformed Services University, in AALAS technician courses at USAMRIID, and in the US Army laboratory animal preceptorship program at Fort Detrick.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Ediger devoted countless volunteer hours to youth through 4-H and FFA, serving for decades as a public-speaking leader and veterinary-science instructor, judge, and workshop leader for projects in dairy, beef, swine, horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, and poultry. A familiar, steady presence at fairs, weigh-ins, field days, and livestock shows, he taught proper animal care, championed excellence in agriculture, coached students to district, state, and national public speaking victories, and mentored generations of young people- many of whom went on to become veterinarians and agricultural leaders. For his service, he was inducted into 4-H All-Stars and the Frederick County Camp Center Hall of Fame and received numerous honors, including Friend of 4-H, the 4-H Angel, and Friend of the FFA awards- testimony to a lifelong commitment to strengthening agricultural communities.
In 1982, he received the Maryland Governor’s Citation for Bravery, the state’s highest civilian honor, for risking his life to save a man being gored by a bull-an act reflecting the courage and selflessness that defined him. Among his many professional recognitions, his most cherished was the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association in 2012. In 1999, the Western Maryland Veterinary Medical Association established the Dr. Raymond Ediger Excellence in Agriculture Award, presented annually to a deserving high school student.
In 1966, Dr. Ediger met the love of his life, Louise Stull Ediger, and they were married for 48 wonderful years. They shared a lifetime of commitment to volunteer service. Together, they were honored by Maryland’s Governor as
the 2006 recipients of Maryland’s Most Beautiful People Award, and, in 2007, they were the first Marylanders to receive the prestigious national Extension ESP Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Extension Service for volunteer service in the nation. They lived in Utica, Maryland, and owned and operated Green Spring Farm near Thurmont, where for more than 50 years, Dr. Ediger raised purebred Shorthorn beef cattle. A lifelong cattleman, he served in leadership roles with the Maryland Cattlemen’s Association, the Pennsylvania Shorthorn Association, the Maryland Beef Council, the All Breed Cattle Sale and Jackpot Show to supply high-quality 4-H projects. For his service, he received the Maryland Cattlemen’s Top Hand Award (2006), was named a Builder of the Breed by the American Shorthorn Association (2011), and received its Lifetime Achievement Award (2021). In 2017, he and his family were recognized as the Maryland Century Farm Family of the Year. He always kept a large menagerie of animals on the farm, including cattle, goats, horses, donkeys, chickens, peacocks, and more, which brought him great joy.
He was actively involved in civic and community organizations, including the Farm Bureau, the Frederick County Soil Conservation District, the Frederick Kiwanis Club, the Frederick County Humane Society, Ruritan, and the Grange. A faithful member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Utica, he served as Council President and Sunday School teacher, living out his faith through service.
Dr. Ediger’s life was defined not only by professional excellence but by integrity, steady leadership, humility, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. He generously shared his time, talents, medical expertise, and unforgettable stories. A gifted storyteller, he authored “Living, Loving, and Laughing with Animals: The Adventures of a Country Veterinarian” and, most recently, completed a second book, to be published later this year and illustrated with his watercolor paintings. He was also a prolific master gardener, and his garden in Utica delighted visitors. He discovered the Monocacy hop on Green Spring Farm-a genetically distinct and locally adapted hop that is boosting the state’s craft brewing industry. Doc had a zest for life, loved music and traveling, and shared many adventures around the world with his daughter.
His legacy reflects a life well-lived, leaving an extraordinary mark on veterinary medicine, the scientific advancements he pioneered, the agricultural community he strengthened, the lives he profoundly touched, and the family he loved dearly. He was
predeceased by his wife, Louise Stull Ediger; he is survived by his daughter, Lynnelle Ediger and husband Alexander Kordzaia; grandson, Lexo Kordzaia; sister, Dolores McMurtry; and nieces and nephews, Sue Bourdage, Kim Cornilles, Aaron McMurtry, and Alan McMurtry. The family wishes to thank
the incredible medical team at Johns Hopkins, Frederick Health Hospice, Kline House, Catherine Marcoux, and many friends for their exceptional care, compassion, and kindness.

(MARYSVILLE, Ohio) – The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) recognized Turner Shorthorns of Somerset, Ohio, as the Seedstock Producer of the Year during the Buckeye Cattlemen’s Summit on Jan. 24, 2026. The event was held at The Ohio State University Wooster Campus, Shisler Conference Center, in Wooster, Ohio. The award was sponsored by the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association.
The Seedstock Producer of the Year award honors Ohio beef operations that have demonstrated exceptional breeding success through registered cattle programs. Recipients utilize performance data and modern technologies to improve genetic predictability while maintaining a strong focus on meeting and exceeding the expectations of beef consumers.
Turner Shorthorns is owned and operated by Tom and Susie Turner and encompasses 215 acres of reclaimed mining ground. The operation has managed approximately 60 purebred Shorthorn cows for the past 15 years. The Turners believe the Shorthorn breed plays an important role in the commercial beef industry and emphasize selecting cattle that are moderate in size, functional, and efficient in production.
As a seedstock producer, Tom Turner emphasizes the importance of measuring
performance at every stage of production. The operation tracks birth, weaning, and yearling weights, records frame scores on the calf crop, and annually weighs and evaluates the cow herd to monitor productivity and flushing ability.
Turner Shorthorns incorporates advanced reproductive technologies, including artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF), to stay aligned with industry trends and genetic advancements.
The Turners also showcase their cattle in show rings across the country and note that one of the most rewarding aspects of their operation is seeing customers succeed with seedstock purchased from their program, validating their genetic and breeding decisions.
