Our approved lab for DNA, Neogen, has increased the cost of blood and hair cards to the ASA and as a result, it is necessary to start charging for them to cover this increase, plus the postage it takes to send them. Blood cards are now $1/card and hair cards are $2/card. Methods for obtaining them have not changed. Please call the office or fill out the card request on shorthorn.org to order. The lab’s preferred methods are TSU samples and blood cards. TSU kits can be purchased directly through Neogen or Allflex. *Remember, there is an additional fee for testing hair and semen. **DO NOT test twins via blood samples.

Attention Juniors! • Junior members 7 years of age are eligible to show at the Junior National. The Junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child turned 7 on December 31, 2021 they are eligible to show at the 2022 National Junior Show in Kansas City, Mo. If they turned 7 on January 10, 2022, they are NOT eligible to show at this year’s Junior National. • Junior members who turned 22 in 2021, your Junior Membership was good through December 31, 2021. To stay a member, you must pay the yearly adult membership fee. All memberships converted from Junior to Adult will become WHR Breeders.

New Rule - Jan. 1, 2022 The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “All bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file. In order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Exciting Times for our Breed!

ou can find a full report of the 2022 Super National Shorthorn Show at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla., in this issue of Shorthorn Country. In only the second year of this spectacular event, over 9,000 head were entered across all breeds as new breed shows have been added. The acceptance from breeds participating last year grew even more and Shorthorn was right there making our own statement. We had 89 head in the pen show scanned at check in; the ultrasound tech mentioned he thought we had one or two more head go through the chute than Angus! This was the largest Shorthorn pen show we have had in several years and the excitement around the pen show was fantastic. The competition was fierce and super competitive. Those watching had plenty of quality bulls and females to study and compare. Excitement was in the air from start to finish. Congratulations to the exhibitors in the pen show for bringing an outstanding group of Shorthorn cattle to represent our great breed. The enthusiasm grew throughout the event. “The Summit” National Shorthorn Sale was a huge success in many ways. The ASA Commissioned painting by CJ Brown, entitled “America’s First” Shorthorns Across America was unveiled and admired by all. Prints were sold by private treaty and we sold out of the copies we had at the show. At the beginning of the Summit Sale six “Artist Proofs” where auctioned off. The American Shorthorn Association’s birth date is 1872 and that number was auctioned off as a registration number to be used by

the breeder for a special animal of their choice. Celebrating 150 years of the ASA was in full swing with all the proceeds from the paintings and registration number going to the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation to help sponsor the Shorthorn Junior National and Youth Conference - over $25,000 was raised for the youth of our breed. The Lot 1 Bull that entered the sale ring, set a Shorthorn record, selling for $123,000; the sale was one of the best if not the best National sale ever. What a way to celebrate the 150 years of the ASA. The sale grossed over $400,000 as animals and genetic lots continued to be in high demand. Thank you to Aegerter Marketing Services for all your efforts in making this sale a great event and thank you to the most important folks, the consignors and the buyers who made this sale a success. Consignors who brought quality, in-demand animals, helped make this one of the extra special events of the year. The morning after the sale we hosted the Shorthorn Junior Show; an awesome display of youth and high-quality animals on parade throughout the day. Following the two Junior Shows was the Open Super National ShorthornPlus Female and Bull Show making it a full day of showing great Shorthorn cattle. Bright and early on the last day of Shorthorn events was the Purebred Super National Shorthorn Show, starting with an excellent set of bulls. This was one of the best sets of bulls from end to end we have had at a national type of show, followed by a really deep and awesome set of females put on display

for the judge and breeders to admire and compare. This year we checked in 476 animals to be exhibited, 5 more head in the halter classes than we did in 2021. This is a real statement for the breed. Showing up in force to display Shorthorns to America. In total, we checked in 565 head to be exhibited at the Cattleman’s Congress 2022 Super National Shorthorn Show making ours one of the premier shows at this year’s event. Our breed’s positive feelings were contagious, shown not only by the number of exhibitors and cattle exhibited, but by the value placed on the cattle and genetics in the sale, let alone private treaty activity. I was impressed walking through the barn and seeing the large number of herd sires being displayed by proud owners. Breeders, exhibitors and spectators all conveyed the pride of the Shorthorn Breed throughout the event in OKC. Attendees developed a great feeling for the breed and the future of the breed. I know I was proud to be a small part of this enormous activity that brought Shorthorn people and breeders together to promote their herds and the breed. I’m proud to be part of the Shorthorn Family!!! = How about a big shout out to everyone voting the Shorthorn Junior National the most enjoyable for the second consecutive year, and to our own Shelby Diehm who was voted best Junior Director, by the Best of the Barns awards for 2021.

Many Miles and Many Places January and the first few days in February were a whirlwind of activities. I spent more time on the road than I did at home due to our many work events. From Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City to Fort Worth Stock Show and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention in Houston, Texas, many miles were traveled. The NCBA Convention is always a highlight of the year for cattlemen. It provides an opportunity for them to gather for education and socialization while taking a break from their daily responsibilities. This year the International Genetics Solution partners were all in the same area with an IGS booth that caught attendees’ attention. The “breed alley” was complimented by

many cattlemen because it gave them a chance to visit multiple breeds and learn more about that they could offer. The American Shorthorn Association booth was highly complimented by fellow breed associations and cattlemen, many stopped by to have a conversation about the Shorthorn breed. We even had two cattle breeders from Hawaii stop to ask us about the advantages of adding Shorthorn to their herd. Next year attendees will gather on February 1-3 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Make plans to join us, we love seeing our Shorthorn breeders at NCBA! During NCBA, I was invited to the American National Cattlewomen, Inc., Emerging Leaders Luncheon. The cattlewomen invite industry leaders to

serve as mentors during a luncheon. Each mentor moved through tables of college students for an eight-minute Q&A session. I answered questions about my college experience and career. It was exciting to talk about how I got to where I am today while also sharing my passion for my job. Many college students asked about our internships and opportunities at ASA after the luncheon was over. It was a great opportunity and I appreciate the ANCW for inviting me to participate. While the first two months of the year were filled with some great work trips, I am glad to be back home so I can focus on the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. It will be here before we know it! =

Investing in the Future The Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) was established in 2020 to provide financial support that will sustain and expand excellent programming to develop Shorthorn youth as cattle producers and responsible, productive citizens. We started a new fundraising program and many breeders donated lots in their sales to become part of the Shorthorn Royal Society. On November 6 during the ‘Durham Nation’ sale, Jungels Shorthorn Farm of North Dakota sold 21 different donation lots for a total of 172 units of semen. These were purchased by breeders from all over. A total of 10% of all proceeds from these semen lots was donated to the SYDF for a total of $755.

Greenhorn Cattle Company of Ohio hosted a sale on November 14. Greenhorn Cattle Co., Turner Family Shorthorns and Double C Shorthorns donated 100% of three sexed heifer embryos. The embryos were purchased for a total of $3,900 by SharBen Shorthorns of Kentucky. On December 11, Paint Valley Farms of Ohio hosted their Maternal Event sale. Byland Polled Shorthorns and Meredith Land and Cattle donated 100% of five units conventional semen. It was purchased by Zane Martin of Montana for $500. Paint Valley Farms donated two lots of five units each sexed semen. Lot A sold for $2,000 to Alan Kegley of Nebraska and lot B sold for $2,000 to John Russell of Texas.

I strongly encourage juniors to try and be as involved as you can whether it is participating in contests, mentorapprentice, asking questions, or helping others in need. These are all ways to meet new people throughout the industry and maximize your experience as well as others around you. I am very excited and hope to see everyone there! On another note, I would like to congratulate our advisor, Shelby Diehm on being selected Best Junior Activities Director in the 2021 Best of the Barns! This is an award that she is very deserving of due to everything she does for us as a junior board and association. I would also like to congratulate everyone on yet another year of being selected as the most enjoyable junior nationals. This is something that would not be possible without everyones help from fundraising, to organizing the event, it really means a lot! With that I cannot wait to see everyone in June. “

After a cold winter for some of us, we are finally starting to inch towards some warmer weather! Especially after the rather chilly trip for some to Oklahoma City for the 2nd Cattleman’s Congress. This year the Cattleman’s Congress was a hit yet again and I would just like to take a second to say thank you to everyone that has helped make it such an enjoyable event for everyone. I know that I really enjoyed spending some time with people within our amazing industry while celebrating our 150 years! As we get start to the new year there are so many things happening! For many calving season is in full swing so there are new baby calves on the ground showing great potential for juniors and breeders throughout the industry. This has always been one of my favorite times of the year because as the days get a little less cold, it means that we are getting much closer to National Junior Shorthorn Show! In just a few months we will all be back together in Kansas City, Missouri, for a junior national that is going to be “Out of this World”! This year our junior board has decided to make a few changes to make the schedule flow as well as

Beef Cookoff: Each state or state group may be represented by a maximum of two teams. Each team must include one Prospector (12 and under). A team may be composed of members of more than one state only if they are unable to fulfill the above mentioned requirements. Shorthorn Pen Show Honoree Stepping Stone Ranch - Ron & Shirley Busse Stepping Stone Ranch is owned by Ron and Shirley Busse. They live in Northwest Kansas, 20 miles from the Colorado border and 30 miles from the Nebraska border. Their love for Shorthorn cattle began at an early age by showing Shorthorn steers at the county fair. Their fire for the breed rekindled back in the 1980s with the purchase of a heifer from the Kansas Shorthorn Futurity sale. And as you might say, the rest is history. They have been showing in the Pen Show for 25 years, starting out with pens of bulls. They were excited when the pen show allowed heifers and the ShorthornPlus side of the breed. They have been blessed to see many purple banners flying next to their name over the past years. Ron and Shirley want to thank the Shorthorn Association for this great honor. They also want to thank their many friends who have helped them over the past years. Without their help, this award would not have come their way! Record Setting Shorthorn Pen Shows at Cattlemen’s Congress Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus Pens :: Judge: Kevin Hafner, Yukon, Okla. by Wade Minihan

Sixty-six head of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle were exhibited in twenty pens during the National Shorthorn Pen Show at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. Judge Kevin Hafner of Express Ranch from Yukon, Oklahoma evaluated these cattle. In the ShorthornPlus show, Pearl Valley Shorthorns of Valley City, N.D. exhibited the Champion Pen of 3 ShorthornPlus Heifers. This Marchborn pen of heifers averaged 795 lb. and a WDA of 2.72. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 Heifers went to Stepping Stone Ranch of Edson, Kan. This pen of May calves averaged 657 lb. and a WDA of 2.66. Lakeside Farms of Hersey, Mich., took home Champion Pen of 3 honors in the ShorthornPlus Bull Show. These spring bull calves weighed in at a 753 lb. average with a WDA of 3.12. In the Shorthorn Pen of 3 Heifer show, Waukaru Farms of Rensselaer, Ind., exhibited the champion pen. These Yearling March heifers averaged 1452 lb. with a WDA of 2.14. The pick of this pen of heifers sold in The Summit sale the following evening and was highly contended for with plenty of bidding interest. The Reserve Champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn Females was awarded to Pearl Valley Shorthorns of Valley City, N.D. This pen of heifers weighed in at an average of 817 lb. and a WDA of 2.51. In the Shorthorn Bull Show, Paint Valley Farms of Millersburg, Ohio exhibited the Champion Pen of 5 with their Spring Bull Calves entry. The bulls averaged 1045 pounds and a WDA of 3.49. Reserve Champion honors went to Waukaru Farms with the winning pen from the Junior Bull Calf class. These March bulls weighed in at an average 1035 lb. with a WDA of 3.34. The final show of the morning was the Shorthorn Pen of 3 Bull division. Jungels Shorthorn Farm took home Champion honors with a trio of Spring Bull Calves. All pen of three bulls averaged a weight of 1013 lb. and a WDA of 3.44. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 went to Gilman Shorthorns of Stuart, Iowa. The winners of the Junior Bull Calf class, these bulls averaged 1133 lb. with a WDA of 3.64.

Thank you to all the breeders who made the trip to Oklahoma City to exhibit their pen cattle at the Cattlemen’s Congress. This was a record number year in the National Pen Show. It was an outstanding exhibition with a good crowd ringside analyzing the cattle. If a breeder couldn’t find a herd sire that

could fit the needs of their breeding program while in OKC, I’m not sure that bull can be found anywhere! Data and results for all the pen cattle are on the following pages. We look forward to another exciting National Pen Show in 2023! =

Ed and Jamie Kruse - Kruse Ranch Ed and Jamie Kruse own Kruse Ranch located in the panhandle of western Nebraska. Their current herd of Shorthorn Plus cattle is composed of mostly black-hided Shorthorn Angus composites. Their breeding program emphasizes look, reproductive performance, and balanced breedleading EPD’s. Both Ed and Jamie have been involved with Shorthorn cattle for 60 years starting with registered heifer 4-H projects. Ed showed in Nebraska and Jamie showed breeding stock in California. Ed was on the first board of directors and served as the third president of the National Junior Shorthorn Association and recently served on the Board of the American Shorthorn Association. Ed and Jamie met at the second National Junior Shorthorn Conference in Kansas City in 1969 and continued their acquaintance when Ed did an internship at A/E Ranch in Lincoln, California as part of his Don Longley scholarship. During college, they showed cattle for Joe Huckfeldt, Gordon, Nebraska (1970 Builder of the Breed). Both are graduates of University of Nebraska, with distinction. Professionally Ed was a loan officer and vice-president in the banking industry in Nebraska and then went on to the National Western Stock Show as manager of the pen show and sales. He has held other positions including Manager, Southern Arizona International Livestock Association; Operations Manager, National Western Stock Show; General Manager, Colorado State Fair. Jamie received her MS from Colorado State University and PhD from University of Arizona in Economics. She has been on faculty at University of Colorado-Boulder, Texas Tech University, Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, and East Carolina University in North Carolina. She also held the position of Chief Economist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She just finished a fifteen-year stint as founding Director of the Center for Natural Hazards Research at East Carolina University and is currently Co-Director of the National Institute of Standards 46

and Technology (NIST) Center for Risk-based Community Resilience Planning at Colorado State University. The Kruse Ranch operation has been headquartered in the panhandle of Nebraska for the past fifteen years. Prior to that their ranch operation was in southern Colorado. They have had the opportunity to raise cattle in many different environments and have learned that with proper selection pressure Shorthorns and Shorthorn crosses adapt to a wide range of management systems. Their current operation uses visual and performance record evaluation with strict reproductive requirements. They have found that their blackhided shorthorn plus cattle have several options in terms of marketing endpoints. Current herd sires include Kruse Odie 187D sired by Jake’s Wizard 246W (Ohlde), Kruse Black Legacy 187F sired

Through the years, Ed and Jamie have enjoyed coaching their two daughters, Casey Sidwell and Dr. Gina Kruse in livestock judging and showing livestock. Gina exhibited the Grand Champion bred-and-owned purebred shorthorn female at the 1999 Shorthorn Junior Nationals and served as President of the Junior Shorthorn Association. Ed and Gina were the first father/daughter team to have both been elected national president. Ed and Jamie now enjoy watching grandsons Jed and Cal Sidwell and Ellis and Marshall Kruse-Jackson carry on a five-generation legacy of producing high quality livestock. =

fort Worth STOCK SHOW FWSS Show Honoree George Ahlschwede George Ahlschwede grew up on a family farm in South central Nebraska. In 1957 purchased his first Shorthorn from the Bakenhus family as a young boy in 4-H. That purchase began his love for Shorthorns and he has had them ever since. He now runs a 125 cow operation on 3,500 acres of lease country in West Texas. He feeds out all of his calves in a local feedlot and then markets them through a local processing plant. He sells a few top heifers and a few bulls. George served two three-year terms on the American Shorthorn Association board of directors and served as their president for two years. George has been active in the Texas Shorthorn Association serving as the president and on the board for several years. George has always been an active supporter of the Shorthorn junior activities as well. He has hosted clinics and judging workshops at his facilities for local youth and college judging teams. He has hosted Texas Shorthorn field days many times. George worked with the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo to add junior Shorthorn Heifers to their show and has served as their Superintendent since the beginning. George graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Animal Science. He was a member of the second highest team at the International Livestock judging contest in Chicago, being the 8th highest individual in the contest. George pursued his master’s degree at Kansas State University working in meat science on live animal and carcass evaluation. He earned his PhD at KSU in genetics with a strong emphasis in animal nutrition. George also served as an Extension Livestock Specialist at KSU working as a meat specialist on live animals and carcass evaluation as well as a sheep specialist. He was then hired on by Texas A&M in 1974 as their sheep and goat specialist, a position he held for nearly 20 years. George retired from Texas A&M Agricultural Extension service in 1992, with a title of Professor ¬¬¬Emeritus. The Ahlschwede family moved to Texas in 1974 and the children grew up with an interest in showing steers in the Texas majors. George’s purchase of Irish Pride from Roger Applegate was the key to their rise in the steer business. In Irish Pride’s first calf crop a calf he sired was Reserve Champion Shorthorn Steer in Fort Worth, Texas. Irish Pride produced some great females, but more importantly Irish Pride was the sire of AHL 306-Double Stuff. Applegate also sold a heifer named Mayflower to George’s daughter to show. As Mayflower got older George’s

sons wanted to breed her to Stinger. She produced twin heifer calves, one of which produced AHL 306-Double Stuff when bred to Irish Pride. AHL 306 was smaller framed and probably one of the first club type bulls to hit the artificial insemination (AI) market. AHL 306 helped downsize some large cows and also sired many show steers and heifers that were moderate framed and very muscular. George likes to have large groups of females all sired by the same bull. He also likes to have 25 to 40 head in a breeding group, for example the great group sired by Angelo – an AHL bull sired by a Bakenhus dividend bull. Many of George’s best calves are out of the Angelo daughters sired by a Proud Jazz son he raised out of an old KSU Wonderline cow. Birth weight has always been important to George. His large brushy pastures make finding new calves difficult. He does not like the buzzards and wild hogs to pinpoint where a cow has calved. George doesn’t mind horns on his cattle as it helps fight off coyotes and the wild hogs during calving season. George has traveled abroad, having consulted with the US Feed Grains Council. He has made trips and worked in Mexico, England, Iran, Iraq, Romania, and Turkey. He has also traveled to Australia

and New Zealand. George continues to reside in San Angelo, Texas where he owns & manages Ahlschwede Livestock which includes Shorthorn cattle, Boer goats and dorper sheep. He utilizes an intensive livestock operation with facilities for calving, cattle feeding, cattle handling and backgrounding. He also has lambing barns and pens. George has been married for 59 years, with three children – a lawyer, Equine Veterinarian, and Procter & Gamble account executive. George has four grandchildren and his granddaughter Sophie had great success at the 2020 National Junior Shorthorn Show. She showed the Grand Champion ShorthornPlus prospect steer. The steer was sired by a son of Double Stuffs full sister and out of a daughter of a different Double Stuffs full sister. The steer went on to be selected as Champion Shorthorn steer at the Austin Livestock Show and Rodeo. George Ahlschwede has many years involved in the Shorthorn Association and as you can tell he loves it. Congrats to George for being selected as the 2022 Fort Worth Stock Show Honoree. =

2022 National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf Program Features Shorthorn Steers The Catch-A-Calf program at the National Western has welcomed nearly 3,000 steers to 4-H families throughout the western United States in its 80-plus years. The program is one of National Western’s most loved traditions! Participants come from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming to compete in the National Western Stock Show’s longest-running program of practical beef cattle management. The program began in 1935 when 10 boys caught 10 sponsored calves. The contest quickly caught on, and the program grew to include 52 calves by 1942. Soon after World War II, the program settled at 40 calves per year, which is where the number continues to stand today. The American Shorthorn Association is honored to announce that the 20212022 program featured Shorthorn steers provided by Peak View Ranch of Fowler, Colorado. This involvement aligns perfectly as the American Shorthorn Association celebrates its 150th Anniversary as a breed association in America. “The American Shorthorn Association is the oldest beef breed association in the US. As a result, Shorthorns pulled the wagons, provided milk and beef as the west was settled. Today we are proud to have a long history with the NWSS and provide Shorthorn cattle for the youth of our industry to gain this experience,” explains Montie D. Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO of the American Shorthorn Association. “Marking our 150th year with 40 Shorthorn steers being raised by 4-H members across the western United States, exemplifies the strength in our breed as it continues to excel today.”

“Shorthorn cattle are the beginning of cattle in America. They are integral in many of the breeds that exist today, and we are celebrating that this year,” comments Trish Leone of Peak View Ranch on the importance of ASA’s 150th Celebration. Each January, participants gather in Denver, Colorado to catch a calf. Members then pick up their projects the first week of May and continue to feed and raise the steer throughout the coming year. Each participant receives a sponsor that supports the exhibitor throughout the year. Each month, the participants write and send a letter to their sponsor telling them about the insights on their projects; most interact with their sponsors beyond letters by making visits to see the calves and watching them show at their county and state show. They return one year later with a market-ready animal to exhibit at the National Western Stock Show. Participates are judged on showmanship, record books and a personal interview; steers are judged on production and carcass quality. The American Shorthorn Association sponsored more than 70 individual awards and prizes for the program in categories from interview, production, record book, sponsor relations, live evaluation, showmanship and overall champions. Peak View Ranch was honored to help represent the Shorthorn breed. Rick Leone of Peak View Ranch adds, “Shorthorns have such an advantage in terms of docility, gain and yield grade. With such a rich tradition of family involvement, Shorthorn’s are great first project for kids.” It was a wonderful sight

to see 40 Shorthorn steers lined up in the show ring; all very well represented. The 2022 Grand Champion Catch-ACalf Steer was exhibited by Cami Miller of El Dorado, Kansas. Although she has exhibited Hereford and club calves, this was her first time with a Shorthorn. “It was a learning experience; he had some people he liked and some people he didn’t, but that was one of the reasons I loved my steer. He also had one of the prettiest hides ever. It is neat that Shorthorns can be marked so many different ways. Something else I liked about my steer and the Shorthorn breed is the frame size. It is valuable when it comes to the carcass and market standpoint.” Cami has always wanted a Shorthorn, their color drew her in, and she was excited to finally have a chance to show her Shorthorn this year. She hopes to get another one to show in the future. The Reserve Grand Champion CatchA-Calf Steer was shown by Jordyn Renquist of Rolling Hills, Wyoming. “The thing I liked most about showing my Shorthorn was how docile he was. I also learned that when you feed Shorthorns the right way, they can grow well. This was my first Shorthorn, but I would love to have another one in my barn.” Jordyn has exhibited Charolais, Maine-Anjou and crossbred cattle during her show career. She liked Shorthorns but never had one catch her eye and was glad she had the opportunity to show one with the Catch-A-Calf program. Congratulations to all participants! News & Notes Farewells Jane Ellen Brautigam, age 79 of Sidney, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at 9:50 PM at Wilson Health. Jane was born on January 13, 1943 in Piqua and was the daughter of Kenneth and Mary Grace(Evans) Knoop who preceded her in death. Jane is survived by her loving family, husband who she married on June 20, 1964, Bernard Brautigam, her sons Mitchell (Lisa) Brautigam, Samuel (Katherine) Brautigam, Joshua

(Tricia) Brautigam and Andrew (Angela) Brautigam, 10 grandchildren Emily(fiancé Nathan Turner), Lukas, Nicholas, Benjamin, Andrew, Lillian, Jonah, Aaron, Grant, and Aiden, sisters Lois (Bill) Heintz, Donna Sue (John) Griewe, and Linda (Doug) Hague, and several nieces and nephews. Jane was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She supported Bernie on the farm, raised four boys, and guided 10 grandchildren to adulthood. She was a hard worker, constantly on the move, and always had a project. Jane managed the family shorthorn herd and showed them at the county, state, and national competitions. In 1988, her heifer won Reserve Champion at the North

American Livestock Exposition. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Shorthorn Breed in 2019. Jane also loved decorating the family home, collecting antiques, and was a superb cook. She was a member of the local garden club and was an Eastern Star. Jane was a graduate of Ohio Northern University and taught at Lowell Elementary School from 19641966. She was also a former member of the Fairlawn Local School Board. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jane’s memory to the Greenview United Church of Christ in Plattsville. =

W.Lee Deutsche, 80, of Crete, Illinois, passed away on January 22, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, on April 1, 1941, to LeRoy and Esther (Bartels) Deutsche. Lee graduated from CreteMonee High School in 1959 and from Arkansas State University in 1964, with a BS degree in Animal Husbandry. As a high school FFA project, Lee purchased a few Shorthorn heifers. Raising and breeding Registered Shorthorn Cattle became a lifelong passion as a proud member of the American Shorthorn Association. Lee showed his cattle nationally, and in Canada. His reputation for knowledge of registered Shorthorn pedigrees was

second to none. He also raised corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay, with his father, brother, and sons. The Deutsche Family adopted and promoted land and water conservation practices such as terraces and no-till farming. Lee served on the Will/South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors. The Deutsche Family represented the region as Conservation Farm Family of the Year in 1982, and traveled to both the state and national conventions. Lee was the Nature Conservancy Citizen of the Year in 2016. Lee also served his community on the Crete-Monee 201-U Board of Education, the Will County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, the Nature Conservancy Foundation Board, the Forest Preserve District of Will County, and the Will County Board. Lee was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and served on many

church boards. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities, and was a die hard Cubs fan who celebrated their long-awaited World Series Championship in 2016. Lee is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon, infant granddaughter Marissa Sartori, and stepson TD Gearhart. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann; children Monica (Tim) Sartori, Darren, Amy, and Kyle (Kelly) Deutsche; stepchildren Mary Margaret (Rich) Tamez, and Elizabeth (Adam) Oestmann; grandchildren Justin and Paige Sartori, Ben and Jack Deutsche, Marisa (Cody) Hawk, Theresa Tamez, Emma and Anna Oestmann; great grandchildren Freya and June Hawk; brother David (Rita) Deutsche, and many brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. =

William R. “Bill” Angell, was born in Lansing, Michigan to Robert D. and Frances L. Angell on August 24, 1946 and passed from this world on January 27, 2022. Bill was raised on a small farm in Michigan where he first acquired his love for agriculture. After graduating from East Lansing High School, he enrolled at Michigan State University (MSU) where he would begin his lifetime involvement with the cattle industry. Bill was an avid evaluator of livestock and was a member of the livestock judging team at MSU where he had great success and always valued the instruction he received from his coach and lifelong friend, Dr. Harlan Ritchie. Upon graduation from MSU, Bill continued his education by earning master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin where his success in livestock judging continued, but this time as the coach. All the success he experienced as a coach paled in comparison to the most important thing he received while in Wisconsin and that was the introduction to the love of his life, Donna Zimmerman. Bill and Donna were married on April 30, 1971 and spent the next 50 plus years together making a life of memories and leaving their mark on so many people. Shortly after their marriage, Bill and Donna moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Bill coached the livestock judging team at the University of Kentucky and continued to impact many young people who would go on to do great things in the industry. Throughout his life, when Bill would recognize the potential, a young person had to impact the industry or to achieve their goals, he was the first one to lend support and to share some of his expertise he had gathered along his journey. His willingness to take the time to share words of encouragement with people over the years was an invaluable gift to so many. On April 17, 1973, Bill and Donna started their family with the birth of their first-born, Blake William. After two years at the University of Kentucky, Bill made a career change that would set in motion the next nearly 50 years of his

Bill was hired when the fair moved to its new location in Grand Island and he played a pivotal role in advancing not only the Nebraska State Fair, but the incredible facilities, to one of the premiere livestock show venues in the country. Bill gave a lifetime of service to the cattle industry and his contributions to it were vast. Bill was not one who looked for praise or recognition but found joy and self-fulfillment in knowing the event he was involved with, whether it be a production sale or a national show, was as successful an event as possible and that he had done everything in his power to ensure the outcome. Based on his selfless nature and his kind soul, he was loved and cherished by so many he came in contact with over the years. Of all his accomplishments, the one he was probably most proud of was being a grandpa. Bill was blessed to have 4 grandkids that he loved and adored. He attended any and all activities they were involved in and cherished spending time with each of them. He was a beloved grandpa who will be greatly missed. Bill loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his countless friends, the cattle industry, his MSU Spartans and the United States of America, which he proudly served in the National Guard. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, sister-in-law, Lois and brother-in-law, David. professional life. In the fall of 1973, Bill moved his family to Pine Bluff, Arkansas as he became a field man for the American Polled Hereford Association. This is where Bill’s love for the purebred side of the cattle industry was forged. He traveled throughout a four-state region, as well as nationally, working with Polled Hereford breeders assisting them with the marketing and promotion of their operations and conducting the business of the Association. While in Arkansas, Bill and Donna grew their family with the first blessing coming on September 27, 1976, in the birth of their daughter Miki Renee. Just a short 13 months later, another blessing arrived in the birth of their third child on October 29, 1977, with their daughter Marisa “Missy” Lynn. In 1978, Bill and Donna moved their family to Colorado as Bill accepted a position with the Record Stockman newspaper. Bill loved working with seedstock operations and assisting them with their marketing and promotional strategies for their annual production sales. One of his most valued and loved contributions in this capacity was the ability to provide ringman services at these production sales. For those in the cattle business, Bill was a fixture ringside at production sales across the country for decades. He had a knack for figuring up the sale average within moments of the conclusion of any sale. Those who knew of this ability would seek him out to see how the sale ended up, because even in today’s world of computers, he was always the first one to have the averages tabulated. After leaving the Record Stockman, Bill worked for Superior Livestock Auction for a number of years where he built the sale catalog, developed the advertising and promotional campaigns and generated the sale reports. However, Bill’s passion remained in the purebred side of the business and when he had the opportunity, he returned to that segment of the industry when he became the Yards Manager at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Over the many years he was at NWSS, Bill’s contributions to the activities that took place “in the yards” were immeasurable. One of his contributions became an iconic glimpse of history when he constructed the “Wall of Champions” in the Livestock Center.

Gary Neal Kaper, 64, of Watseka, Illinois, died on January 16, 2022, following a short illness. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 22, 1957 to Harry & Grace Kaper, who preceded him in death in 2021. Gary was a 1975 graduate of Carl Sandburg High School, Orland Park, IL and completed his education at Joliet Junior College with a degree in agriculture science. At age 12, Gary purchased his first Milking Shorthorn cow. Over the next 50 years, as owner of Kaper Cattle Company, he continued to develop his herd and implement breeding strategies that were recognized both nationally and internationally. Gary was a Registered

Shorthorn breeder since 1973 and proud member of the American Shorthorn Association. With his vast knowledge of the breed and its history, Gary was a successfully published Shorthorn author on various platforms. Gary was steadfast in his participation and commitment to family business, both Kaper’s Hardware & Building Materials of Watseka, IL and Bedford Woodworking Company of Burbank, IL. Not only was he a history buff, he loved music. As an accomplished bassist, he expressed his love of Jesus Christ by writing many songs, celebrating his Christian faith. He felt blessed and honored to be a member of the band Hallel. Gary was on the Elder board at Cornerstone Church, as well as a musician in their worship and praise band. Gary married the love of his life, Deborah (Phelps) on September 25, 2012 in historic St. Charles, Missouri.

Together, they shared a strong commitment to their Christian faith, as well as a deep passion for the care of God’s creatures, great and small. Survived by his siblings, Susan (Steve) Johnson, Burt (Nancy) Kaper, Jeff (Sarah) Kaper, Stephanie (James) Gray, step daughter Ashley (Sean) McQuinn and granddaughters Shannon & Danielle. As Uncle Gary to Cornell, Madelyn, Katelyn, Grant, Allison, Reed, Alex, Ethan, Anna, Ellen, Emma, Olivia & Oliver, he will always be remembered for his special nicknames for them, his unique sense of humor and unconditional love. There are no words to express our grief and deep loss. But we are confident we will all be together again someday in the presence of our Lord. =

“Best of the Barns” Recognizes Shorthorns in Two Award Categories The most prestigious awards in the livestock industry, the Best of the Barns recognizes the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) in two 2021 award categories. The National Junior Shorthorn Show held in Louisville, Kentucky received 10,735 votes, winning the ‘Most Enjoyable Junior Nationals’ award for the second year in a row. This past National Junior Shorthorn Show set records for entries with over 900 entries from 28 states. The AJSA strives to engage its members in opportunities that develop character, promote valuable skills and build life-long friendships. “We call ourselves the family friendly breed, and if you know the people in

the breed, you know it is true. It is what makes us really special and keeps families coming back.” says Shelby Diehm, AJSA Director of Youth Activities. “It is very exciting to win most enjoyable junior national for the second year in a row”. 150th Anniversary Commemorative Painting “America’s First-Shorthorns Across America”, a limited-edition painting by renowned livestock illustrator and artist C. J. Brown has been released for public purchase. The painting was commissioned by the American Shorthorn Association to celebrate the 150th year of the American Shorthorn Association and will be treasured by many Shorthorn enthusiasts for years to come. To commemorate each year of Shorthorns in the past, 150 limitededition prints have been commissioned 82

and released. The original painting will hang indefinitely in the American Shorthorn Association headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. During the 2022 National Shorthorn Sale, The Summit at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the first six artist proofs were sold as a donation for $20,000. These profits, and all print sale profits will benefit the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation (SYDF). The purpose of the SYDF is to provide financial support to sustain and expand the National Junior

Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference held annually. C.J. Brown remarks that she “was honored to be commissioned to create this piece by the American Shorthorn Association in celebration of their 150th anniversary.
