WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2026 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2026.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2026 to an assessed 2026 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months) *Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.

Membership Deadline The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline is April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2026 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

A New Year, A New Beginning for Shorthorn Breeders

he beginning of a new year always feels like a fresh start. January 1 gives each of us the sense of a clean slate, a renewed outlook, and a chance to move forward with purpose. For Shorthorn breeders, it is no different. A new year means new cattle shows, new calves, new matings, new crops—and an entirely new set of opportunities that will shape the future of our breed. January alone hosts three of the seven national shows recognized by our breed. These events set the tone for the coming year, showcasing the quality and direction of Shorthorn genetics. At the same time, new calves will hit the ground—calves that will one day lead our breed’s progress and play a major role in the genetic direction of Shorthorns for years to come. New matings will be planned, each with the expectation of producing something better, stronger, and more profitable. Every new year also brings changes we cannot predict. It can be easy to look at those changes with a negative lens, but true leaders in agriculture and the cattle business embrace what is new, learn from it, and use it to create a better Shorthorn product. Whether we are talking about performance technology, genomic breakthroughs, or advanced reproductive techniques, the tools available today give us far more information—and far more opportunity—than ever before. Embryo transfer, cloning, sexed semen, and improved IVF technologies have

changed the game in the past decade. Many methods once reserved for only the most elite breeders are now accessible across the industry. And we know more advancements are coming—greater accuracy in health identification, more precise tools for genetic selection, and new ways to multiply top-end genetics will continue to shape how we improve cattle. Economics are also stronger—and more challenging—than they’ve ever been. With feeder calf prices at all-time highs, the stakes are higher for everyone. Both bull producers and show cattle breeders must focus on limiting risk for their customers. Buyers will demand more security, more information, and more confidence in the cattle they purchase. Our job as Shorthorn breeders is to provide that security by producing cattle that live up to their reputation— cattle that grow, perform, stay healthy, and produce. Show cattle breeders must focus on structural soundness, health, and long-term productivity. Those cattle eventually enter someone’s herd, and they must justify the investment made in them. Commercial-focused breeders must continue to produce bulls and females that thrive under real-world conditions. The more high-performing Shorthorn-influenced cattle we put into the commercial industry, the more demand we will create. And we are seeing a resurgence of interest. People across the industry

are taking notice of the progress Shorthorn breeders have made. They see improvement in the show ring and increased performance in the commercial sector. But this momentum will continue only if we remain disciplined—building a strong genetic base, documenting performance, and placing a high priority on quality. Perception matters. As Harvey Mackay says, “Don’t let perception be based on deceptions.” Our reputation as a breed rests on each breeder’s commitment to their customers. Treat customers how you want to be treated. Provide the kind of product you would be proud to purchase yourself. I used to sit in the bleachers before our ranch sales with the catalog and ask myself, “Would I buy this animal?” If the answer was no, that animal didn’t belong in the sale. That kind of honest self-evaluation creates trust—and trust builds a breed. As we start a new year, let’s make a resolution to uphold the perception we want the industry to have of Shorthorn cattle: reliable, predictable, performanceoriented, and backed by breeders who stand behind what they sell. I’ll close with a final Harvey Mackay thought: “In business, perception is reality. How you are perceived by your customers can be the difference between success and failure. Always strive to create a positive and lasting impression.” We all can help make 2026 a great year for Shorthorns!

International Genetic Solutions (IGS) – Recent Enhancements to the Calving Ease Evaluation In this month’s column, we explore the recent enhancements to the Calving Ease (CE) evaluation provided through International Genetic Solutions (IGS). These updates are part of IGS’s ongoing efforts to deliver the most accurate and comprehensive genetic evaluation available to the beef cattle industry. Back in July, the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) was notified that IGS was conducting research to improve the Calving Ease evaluation. The results of this work were implemented in the evaluation released on November 24, 2025. ASA has studied these updates and consulted with Ryan Boldt, IGS Lead Geneticist, to better understand the improvements. These enhancements underwent an extensive validation process, and the prediction accuracy for Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) has increased. In the following paragraphs, we break down the three major modeling updates implemented in the revised Calving Ease Evaluation. 1. Breed and Decade Interaction In previous evaluations, Breed and Decade were combined into a single random effect (e.g., Shorthorn cattle born in the 2000s). For some breeds with limited data—including Shorthorn— this created computational challenges and increased processing time. In the updated model, Breed and Decadeare now treated as separate effects, which improves computational efficiency and better utilizes available data. This is particularly beneficial to Shorthorn, where some Breed × Decade categories were sparse. Why include decade at all? Decade captures genetic trend over 12

time, helping the model adjust for ongoing breed improvement. 2. External EPD Incorporation An External EPD is an Expected Progeny Difference sourced from a breed not evaluated within IGS. Angus is a primary example, though not the only one. Why use External EPDs? • They allow IGS to incorporate the pedigree, phenotypic, and genomic information already generated in other breed evaluations. • For example, an Angus sire may have 10,000 progeny recorded in the Angus system but only a handful in IGS. External EPDs ensure that this wellvalidated genetic information is retained in the IGS evaluation. IGS has revised the methodology used to blend External EPDs with IGS data. The new approach is modeled after techniques used in international multi-country evaluations, such as those coordinated by Interbull. This update improves prediction accuracy within the IGS system. For Shorthorn, the impact will be most noticeable in ShorthornPlus cattle due to the greater use of external sires. 3. Marker Effects Before this update, CEM was not a fully genomic EPD because maternal marker effects were not incorporated. This has now changed - CEM is a true Genomic EPD, improving precision and genetic prediction. CED also saw improvements. Previously, CED and birth weight (BW) were modeled as uncorrelated traits due to computational limitations. In the updated evaluation, the genetic correlation between CED and BW

is now included, allowing the model to more accurately reflect biological relationships. This enhanced approach better captures both: • Marker-based variation, and • Polygenic inheritance - the combined additive effect of many genes that create continuous traits like CED and CEM. *Polygenic inheritance is when a single trait (like CED or CEM) is controlled by the cumulative additive effects of multiple genes. It’s a form of non-Mendelian inheritance where many genes (polygene) each contribute a small amount, creating a continuous range, like a bell curve. Effects on the Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation Shifts in breed averages and trait ranges occurred as a result of the updated model. Percent ranks from September 30, 2025 (before the enhancements) and November 18, 2025 (after the enhancements) show the following changes: CED • Breed average for active sires increased from 9 to 15. • Trait range expanded from –4 to +24 to –2 to +33. CEM • Breed average rose slightly from 4 to 5. • Trait range shifted from –12 to +19 to –8 to +16. INDEX VALUE CHANGES Calving Ease contributes to three Shorthorn selection indexes: $CEZ, $BMI, and $CPI. Below are the average index values

for active sires before and after the evaluation changes: Index Averages (Active Sires) $CEZ $BMI $CPI Nov 18 52.17 126.04 152.29 Sept 30 32.63 116.82 126.92 Change +19.54 +9.22 +25.37 Staff also reviewed the top 50 bulls used in registrations over the past year. As expected, index values increased in proportion with CED increases. Minor percent-rank changes occurred, but overall reranking was minimal.

Final Thoughts The Shorthorn breed has long emphasized Calving Ease, and the improved IGS evaluation better recognizes these breed-wide efforts. When BOLT was originally developed, it represented a “clean sheet” approach to genomic cattle evaluation. As with any sophisticated system, continual refinement is expected. The latest enhancements to the IGS Calving Ease Evaluation provide a more precise ranking of animals, improving the accuracy of both CED and CEM predictions. This allows breeders to make

more informed, confident selection decisions—ultimately advancing the progress of the Shorthorn breed and its registry.

Beginning the New Year and Rounding Out the Show Season As the flurry of Holiday activities settles, the new year propels us directly into one of the busiest stretches of the season: the winter lineup of National Shows. While trailers are being packed, crockpot meals prepared, and winter layers gathered, ASA staff has been hard at work behind the scenes to ensure another successful run of Shorthorn events. January begins in Oklahoma City at the Cattlemen’s Congress. The E.D.G.E. Show returns as a featured event and will also make its debut at the National Western Stock Show this year. Another highlight of the winter circuit—the highly anticipated Summit Sale—will take place at both the Cattlemen’s Congress and the National Western, with catalogs available at CCI.Live for

those planning their bidding strategy. From Oklahoma, the show string travels west to Denver for the iconic National Western Stock Show. Exhibitors are encouraged to review updated arrival procedures on the NWSS website, as this year’s event will be held in the newly completed facilities. The 2026 show season promises an exciting glimpse into the future of a more modern, improved show experience. As January winds down, our focus shifts south to Texas for the Fort Worth Stock Show—an annual favorite among exhibitors and spectators alike. Before making the trip, double-check your registration papers. Fort Worth maintains a unique requirement: the ownership listed on the registration must match the name on the open show

entries. If anything is out of alignment, be sure to complete the necessary ownership transfers before the deadline. The winter circuit concludes at the Dixie National in Jackson, Mississippi. Entries are currently open and close at the end of January. For exhibitors tracking show points, this event offers a strong opportunity to add to your totals before the season wraps up. A complete schedule of all shows can be on page 43. Each year, we’re reminded how quickly these winter months pass and how much ground we cover. Yet, thanks to the family-friendly nature of the Shorthorn breed and the dedicated people who make up this community, the journey remains not only manageable— but truly rewarding.

The Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) provides financial support that will sustain and expand excellent programming to develop Shorthorn youth as cattle producers and responsible, productive citizens. The Royal Society fundraising program allows breeders to donate lots in their sales to become part of the SYDF. During The Star Search XXIII sale, Cates Farms of Indiana sold a female, CF Mona Lisa 451 DM X ET to Charles Anderson of Michigan for $7,000. They donated 100% of the proceeds to the SYDF. Cornerstone Farms of Indiana hosted their online sale in September. The live animal was CSF Margie 5114 AC. The SYDF received a total of $3,000 from the animal sold to Kyli Thomas of New Mexico. During the Shorthorn Revival Sale, Little Cedar Cattle Co., donated semen on HD Bloodstone 603 ET and Little Cedar Aviator 503X. The Bloodstone semen was purchased for a total of

$1,300 by Ken Kittendorf of Michigan and the Aviator semen was purchased for a total of $950 by S-CO Shorthorn Farms of Hastings, Minnesota. The total donated by LCCC to SYDF is $2,250. Jester Farms of Indiana donated 10% of J-F Mona Lisa 2518 ND ET to SYDF. The lot sold to Loren & Lisa Green of Iowa. The SYDF received $375. In October, Six’s Legends of the Fall sale had two donation lots. The first was semen on JSF Namath 14L donated by Cheyenne Cattle Company of Kentucky. It sold for a total of $250 to Matthew Duvall of Ohio. The next semen lot of Byland Iconic 4EL16 was donated by Six Family Shorthorns. The New Year always feels like a fresh start, new goals, new plans, and plenty of things to look forward to. It’s a good time to think about what we learned last year, get excited for what’s ahead, and jump into all the opportunities a new season brings. Whether it’s hitting new milestones or meeting new people in the Shorthorn world, there’s a lot to be excited about. For Shorthorn breeders and exhibitors, the New Year means show season is picking up again. There’s nothing quite like getting cattle dialed in, improving your program, and getting back in the ring. Each year brings the chance to grow, compete at great events, and connect with the people who make this breed so fun to be a part of. It’s also a great time to look at genetics,

Growing up on my family’s six-generation diversified farm in Bristol, South Dakota, I was surrounded by the values of hard work, tradition, and community. My parents, Thad and Vicki, along with my siblings Jessica, Nathan, and Allison, have always been my greatest supporters. This past May, I graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Elementary Education. My heart has long been tied to the Shorthorn breed and the people who make this association so special. My passion for Shorthorns began when I was just seven years old, showing as a clover bud in 4-H. From that moment on, I knew this breed would shape my life. I vividly remember my first Junior Nationals in Kansas City in 2022—walking into a space filled with Shorthorns and seeing the Lassie Queens for the first time. That week lit a fire in me, and I set my sights on one day wearing the crown myself. With the support of my home state, I was honored to serve as South Dakota’s Shorthorn Lassie Queen, traveling to Cattleman’s Congress, NAILE, and

Denver. Those experiences introduced me to incredible breeders and lifelong friends. After nearly two years of representing South Dakota, my dream became reality when I was crowned National Shorthorn Lassie Queen at the 2025 Cattleman’s Congress. During my reign, I set two goals: to increase involvement from Junior members and to strengthen support from breeders. At Junior Nationals this past summer, those goals came to life in ways I could have only imagined. The annual Lassie Tea welcomed over 150 participants, where we shared cookies, tea, and created tie blankets to donate to a homeless shelter. Our Bingo event drew more than 300 participants, offering prizes ranging from daily care products to show-day essentials. Watching juniors, breeders, board members, and Lassies come together in fellowship was a highlight of my year. This role has been filled with countless smiles, quick outfit changes, and cherished backdrop photos. While many asked if I ever grew tired of smiling, the truth is that every moment was a joy. As I prepare for one final show in Oklahoma City—my last as a junior exhibitor—I am overwhelmed with gratitude. To my parents, thank you for the

miles traveled, the hours invested, and the unwavering encouragement. To the breeders, juniors, and board members, thank you for welcoming me with open arms. And most importantly, to my Lord and Savior, thank you for blessing me with this opportunity and guiding me every step of the way. Serving as the 2025 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen has been the honor of a lifetime. Though my reign is ending, my love for this breed and this community will remain forever. NAILE 2025 Shorthorn Show Honoree The Greenhorn Family

The Greenhorn Family in Louisville, Ky., receiving the Shorthorn Show Honoree award. The Shorthorn passion for the Greenhorn family began on December 25, 1962, when USAF Colonel Alvin Greenhorn gave his son, David, two Shorthorn heifers—Holly and Noel—for Christmas. These were David’s first 4-H projects, and they marked the beginning of a lifelong devotion to the Shorthorn breed. Over the next eight years, David continued showing Shorthorns at the county and Ohio State Fairs, developing a deep love for the breed. David was an active member of both the Ohio Junior Association and the American Junior Association. His younger sister, Debbie, also showed Shorthorns and was crowned the 1973 Ohio Shorthorn Lassie Queen. Colonel Greenhorn, with assistance from Ed Zorn, the OSU beef specialist, selected the Shorthorn breed for their good nature, mothering ability, and strong maternal instincts. Throughout David’s early years, he attended many judging contests and sales while studying the breed’s leading programs, such as Acadia Farms, Timberlee Valley, Windholme, Arrowhead, and Torgenson Brothers—just to name a few. In the summer of 1970, David, Debbie, and their mother traveled to Canada to attend the Thomas, Gordon, and Draper sale. David’s grandmother allowed him to cash in his savings bonds to purchase some outstanding females. There, he purchased Kenmar Myrtle 17A at the top of the sale—she had been undefeated at all three of the Canadian majors. After graduating from Bellbrook High School, David attended the University of

Kentucky, majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Business. In 1971, he became the youngest member of the UK Livestock Judging Team and placed third high individual at the Chicago International. Following graduation, David accepted the manager position at KBJ Ranch in December 1973, where he remained for nearly 35 years. The cow herd grew to more than 500 brood cows under his management. During this time, David and the ranch owner established the first embryo transplant center east of the Mississippi River in collaboration with Ohio State University in 1975. David recognized early on that embryo transfer would play an important role in the future of many purebred operations. Today, the majority of Greenhorn Cattle Company calves are the result of embryo transplant, and the farm has served as a satellite center for Vytelle LLC for the past five years. Fast forward to 1984—when the third generation of Shorthorn enthusiasts entered the picture. Josh quickly developed a love for showing heifers alongside his older twin sisters, Heidi and Sheri. Josh became active in the Ohio Best Program, attending over 100 shows while promoting the breed. In 2009, Josh was named “Herdsman of the Year” by his peers. That same year, the family exhibited 15 head at the North American, establishing their program as a leader in showing and selling top-quality show heifer prospects. In 2005, the Greenhorn family hosted their first Production Sale, featuring elite show prospects and herd-building females aptly named Where Great Females Make a Difference. This year marks their 20th sale.

In 2010, the Greenhorns expanded their efforts by developing the sale Where Future Generations Are Created at the North American, featuring frozen genetics from their donor pool and top consignors from across the country. That same year, the fourth generation of Shorthorns joined in—Kolten, who began showing at just three years old and has since become a force in showmanship and breed promotion. Thirteen years later, Huxton, Josh and Austin’s son, joined the family tradition, proudly representing the fourth generation of Shorthorn lovers. The brothers share a genuine bond and passion for the breed. The Greenhorn family has been showing and promoting Shorthorns from the very beginning. They’ve exhibited Grand Champions at 10 State Fairs and major shows, including Louisville, Denver, Fort Worth, Kansas City, and Harrisburg. David’s father always preached, “Surround yourself with great people and you will be successful.” The Greenhorns have truly lived by that philosophy, building a legacy rooted in hard work, family, and the Shorthorn community. Today, Dave, Sheila, Josh, Austin, Kolten, and Huxton continue to look forward to the future—showing and promoting the Red, White, and Roans with pride. Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year - Kendall Nelson The Herdsman of the Year is a prestigious award sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and honored with a trophy buckle in memory of Lawrence Grathwohl. Lawrence Grathwohl was a loyal member of the ASA who passed at the young age of 41. He was best known for raising Shorthorn cattle, which he showed across the country. This year, the Show Committee decided to update the election process. Nominations were submitted ahead of time by the committee. Each committee member then ranked the nominees from top to bottom. The three individuals with the lowest total scores will appeared on the ballot. These three finalists (Kendall Nelson, Rick & Trish Leone, & Christy Cambell) were then voted on by the Open Show Exhibitors only at the 2025 NAILE and the winner was announced prior to the Champion Purebred Female Selection. For Kendall Nelson of Seneca, Illinois, raising and exhibiting Shorthorn cattle isn’t just a passion—it’s a family tradition. As the fifth generation to return to his family’s grain and livestock operation, Kendall has spent a lifetime immersed in agriculture and the cattle industry. Kendall’s involvement with Shorthorn cattle began at a young age, growing up in the show ring and developing an appreciation for high-quality genetics. “Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was observe other breeders’ Shorthorn cattle they were displaying,” Kendall said. “This helped me get a grasp of the different ways everyone used the Shorthorn gene pool. I learned at a young age to be observant as to what other bloodlines and genetics were doing for their operations.” Kendall shared that some of the most important feedback he received from other breeders was to do your own thing and make the cattle how you like them. He said that

over time, he has worked to make sure he selects the cattle the way he likes them. This reflects what he is trying to do with his herd and the relationships he has built within the breed. After high school, he attended Joliet Junior College, where he earned an associate degree and competed on the livestock judging team. Those years sharpened his skills and deepened his understanding of the livestock industry. “A highlight of my Shorthorn career was at the 2018 NJSS in Madison,” said Kendall. “That week was the launchpad of my status within the breed. I exhibited the Grand Champion Bred and Owned female with NF Fool Me now, or Big White. She then went on to raise several national champions and be a major part of my operation.” While exhibiting, Kendall and his family carefully selected elite bloodlines that would become the foundation of his own operation, Nelson Farms. After aging out of junior shows, he launched his program and began hosting an annual online sale featuring both females and bulls that reflect the traits he values most. Using advanced reproductive tools like embryo transfer and artificial insemination, Kendall has strategically built a herd that performs in both the show ring and the pasture. That dedication has led to multiple national champion banners and growing recognition within the Shorthorn breed. “I was also elected to the junior board in 2018,” said Kendall. “I was fortunate to receive a three-year term that allowed me to expand my network at several events within the Shorthorn breed. I attribute a lot of credit to receiving this award to the time I spent on the board working within the breed.” Kendall shared that his time on the AJSA board was a highlight of his youth involvement—providing leadership

experience, valuable industry connections, and friendships with fellow breeders and cattlemen from across the country. Humbled by his nomination for Herdsman of the Year, Kendall is quick to credit the support of his family, mentors, and fellow breeders for helping him reach this point. “None of this would be possible without the people who have believed in me along the way,” he says. “I’m grateful to be part of a breed and community that feels like family.” Kendall said his advice to younger junior members who want to stay involved is to take every opportunity they can. When he looks back on his junior career, several moments stand out. Whether they were attending jackpots, breeder sales or visiting with breeders, it helped him establish friendships that he will have forever. One of his favorite duties while on the junior board was checking tattoos at NAILE because it allowed him to visit with the different people that make up the Shorthorn breed. He said that the junior board is such a special opportunity. It may take a lot of work and time from your stalls, but the people he served with and the friendships he made are invaluable. “Take every opportunity to grow your network with other breeders; that is what makes the Shorthorn breed so special,” Kendall said. “Thank you to everyone who has become a friend or family and for believing in me.” Congratulations Kendall on being voted by your peers as the 2025 Lawrence Grathwohl Herdsman of the Year, sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation.

News & Notes Farewells On Friday, December 5, 2025, James Edwin Freed, 81, went home to be with the Savior. James was born on November 29, 1944, to Clarence Edwin Freed Jr. and Virginia Lucille (Dunham) Freed, in Chickasha, OK. He passed from this life on December 5, 2025, in Tulsa, OK. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Beverly Ann (Gleason) Freed, whom he married on July 8, 1967; daughter Janet Lynn (Freed) Strate and her husband, Jim Strate Jr.; son Jerry Wayne Freed and his wife, Carmen Freed; grandsons Justin William Strate and wife Lexi, Jarred William Strate and wife Victoria, and Vann Freed; granddaughter Vail (Freed) Phipps and husband Braden; great-grandchildren Layton Strate, Jentry Strate, Graham Strate, and Leddy Strate; sister Judy (Freed) Babbit and husband Ron; and cousins Mary Taff and Robert Manley; brothers-in-law Phil Harrison and Doy Burchel; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; cousin Paul Manley; and sisters-in-law Sue Harrison and Pat Burchel. James, known to many as Jim, Jimmy, or Doc, grew up in Oklahoma City. In his youth he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and played Little League football. He attended U.S. Grant High School from 1958 to 1962. After graduating, he went on to Oklahoma Christian College from 1962 to 1966, where he met Beverly. While at OCC, he served as the trainer for both the basketball and track teams. He continued his education at the University of Oklahoma Medical School from 1966 to 1970 and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his internship and residency 52

at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City from 1970–1973. In September 1973, Jim joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico. He served as a physician in the Air Force until September 1975. After completing his military service, he began his pediatric practice at the Chickasha Clinic, later known as Southern Plains Medical Center (SPMC). He also traveled to Anadarko and Tuttle to care for patients in those communities. Jim served as the Team Physician for the Oklahoma Christian College Men’s Basketball Team. His enthusiasm on the bench was so evident that opposing players often mistook him for the coach. He had a deep love for caring for children and for anyone needing medical guidance. His specialty in pediatrics was ADHD, and he also contributed to EPIC Medical Research as a researcher. Jim recently retired from SPMC and was honored for 50 years of service. Over his 55-year medical career, he cared for patients in more than 250,000 appointments. He was always willing to take a call or respond to a text from patients, friends, or family seeking medical advice. Jim’s faith was central to his life. Anyone who knew him knew he was a devoted Christian. After marrying, he and Beverly attended Southwest Church of Christ in Oklahoma City, where Jim served as a Youth Director. They later attended the 16th & Pile Church of Christ in Clovis, NM, where he again served as Youth Director. Jim also served for multiple years as Camp Director for Camp Lu-Jo-Kismif, investing deeply in the spiritual growth and encouragement of young people. In Chickasha, they worshiped at Southern Oaks Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder. He became an Elder at Blanchard Church of Christ in 2017, where he was also active in Vacation Bible School. Most recently,

Jim and Beverly were members of The Park Church of Christ in Tulsa. Another passion of Jim’s was Shorthorn cattle. Double J Ranch began in 1980 when his children, Janet and Jerry, started showing Shorthorns. Jim was deeply involved in the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association, serving in many Board of Director roles over the years. In 2023, he received the OSA Lifetime Achievement Award. Nationally, he served on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors from 1990–1996, including terms as Vice President and President in 1996, and again from 2012–2018, serving as President in 2017–2018. He was also passionate about youth in agriculture and leadership and was active in the American Junior Shorthorn Association, assisting with numerous Junior National Shows as an office assistant and advisor. In 2024, the AJSA honored Jim and Beverly with a framed “official” red coat signed by many former junior board members they had supported over the years. Jim loved watching OU sports and sports in general. He never met a stranger and was a true social butterfly who thrived in the company of others. His deep faith in Christ guided every part of his life, and he consistently left a positive, uplifting influence on everyone he met. Whether through his words, his actions, or his compassion, Jim reflected the love of Jesus in the way he lived and served others. George Allen Ahlschwede, 85, of Wall, Texas, died December 7, 2025. George was born April 15, 1940, at home near Dorchester, Nebraska. He grew up on the family farm near Dorchester, Nebraska where he developed his love for livestock that endured until his last day. George graduated from Crete High School in 1958 where he was a multisport athlete. He also played in the band where he met his high school sweetheart, Grace Marr. The two were married on April 22, 1962. George received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Nebraska in 1962. He went on to Kansas State University and achieved a Masters in Meat Science and a PhD. in Animal Genetics and Nutrition. His career began as an Extension Livestock Specialist for Kansas State, leading him to Texas where he was an Extension Sheep & Goat specialist for 25 years and retiring as a Professor Emeritus in the Texas A&M University system in 1992. At the age of ten, George bought two Hampshire ewes, beginning his lifetime passion for livestock. He judged countless sheep and goats shows across the US, Canada and Mexico. The Ahlschwedes hosted field days and

visiting judging teams and he traveled internationally to promote the industry and share his expertise. He had a strong work ethic and instilled that value in his children. He raised sheep, goats and cattle with the support of his wife and help of his children and Jacinto. He led his children and many others in their 4-H show projects. His barns were always available if you were willing to put in the work. He was on the forefront of the Boer Goat industry, birthing some of the first purebred kids in the US. He served as the President of the American Shorthorn Association. George is survived by wife of 63 years Grace Marr Ahlschwede; son Scott Ahlschwede (Patricia) of Saratoga Springs, NY, and daughter Anne Barnes (Nelson) of San Antonio, TX; Daughterin-Law Tonya Spaeth Ahlschwede of Mason, TX; grandchildren Jay Ahlschwede and Sophie Ahlschwede of Mason, TX; and Elena Ahlschwede and Axel Ahlschwede of Saratoga Springs NY. He is also survived by his long-time employee and #1 hand, Jacinto Bravo. He was preceded in death by son, Allen Jay Ahlschwede, parents, Robert and Betty Ahlschwede, and brother William Ahlschwede. Town/ State: Owatonna, Minnesota What is one must have item at a cattle show? Why? A comb or brush because then you can get the hair going in one direction. What do you want to do in the future? I want to be a large animal veterinarian and have a big shorthorn herd on 600 acres of land. What is one thing you have learned through showing cattle? I learned how to judge cattle. What is your favorite cattle show you have exhibited at? Why? Jr. Nationals because there are so many more activities to participate in besides showing cattle.
