Association Outlook

Montie D. asa executive Soules secretary/CEO

Momentum, Milestones, and the Road Ahead

I

t is a great time to be a Shorthorn breeder. As we close the books on our past fiscal year, I am incredibly proud to announce a major milestone: we registered over 16,000 head of Shorthorn cattle. This is the first time we have broken the 16,000-head mark in many years, and it marks our fifth consecutive year of registering over 15,000 head. This sustained growth is a direct reflection of the rising interest in our genetics, the influx of new players, and our growing acceptance throughout the wider beef industry. We will be celebrating this momentum at our upcoming Annual Meeting at the end of October, held in conjunction with the American Royal here in Kansas City. I invite you all to kick off the weekend on Friday, October 23, with an open house at the ASA office. Join us for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and great Shorthorn fellowship. The Annual Meeting will follow on Saturday, October 24, at the Embassy Suites by the airport. We will review the past year’s reports, elect new board directors, and announce exciting new performance data initiatives. Our committees have been heavily researching emerging technologies, and the board will be sharing decisions on how we plan to integrate these tools. Saturday afternoon will conclude with a luncheon where we will honor our major award winners, including the Show Heifer and Bull of the Year, Builder of the Breed, the Heritage Award, Merit Award, and our Regional Show Heifers and Bulls of the Year for all five regions. Make it a three- or four-day weekend, because this will also be our first year at the spectacular new American Royal facility. The Shorthorn Junior Show takes place on Thursday, followed by the Open Show on Friday, right before the Annual Meeting. While it should 12

shorthorn country • october 2026

come as no surprise that a project of this magnitude takes time and isn’t entirely completed just yet, what is finished is awfully impressive. The entire facility is air-conditioned, providing an incredible environment for both exhibitors and cattle. While it will likely be November before the barns are totally finished, they are in great shape and fully ready for the American Royal. Although the main Coliseum and permanent show rings won’t be completed for probably another year to a year and a half, a more than adequate show ring has been built directly into the current facility. This new complex is large, purposebuilt for livestock, and truly one of the most impressive new builds in the United States—rivaling the incredible developments we have seen in Denver and Louisville. I think everyone will be very impressed with what they see. As we enter the heart of show season, the energy is palpable. From our Junior National this past June in Abilene, Texas, to the regional and state fairs across the country, Shorthorn participation has been exceptional. More importantly, the quality of our cattle has never been better. We are simply no longer seeing those bottom-end cattle; our breeders have done a tremendous job raising the floor and consistently producing good cattle that the entire industry is noticing. This visible improvement goes handin-hand with our disciplined use of performance data. By effectively utilizing EPDs and breed indexes in our selection processes, we are creating animals with solid documentation that the commercial sector can trust. A prime example is our Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) research project with Simplot. The data shows that the Shorthorn breed is well over 90% low-risk for BCHF across the entire population. This is a massive selling point. When our

genetics are crossed and brought into the commercial arena, it drastically reduces un-recoupable feedlot losses tied to heart failure. This kind of documented advantage makes the Shorthorn breed measurably more valuable to the bottom line. As the fall sales season kicks off, we are already seeing strong demand for top Shorthorn genetics, driven by both established breeders and new members building their programs. To maintain this trajectory, it is up to all of us to remain disciplined and leverage the data at our fingertips.

In the Know

Wade director of shows & member Minihan communications; customer service specialist

All Things Fall Shows! As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, the Shorthorn breed is heading into one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year. From the American Royal to NAILE, there is plenty happening across the breed, and we look forward to seeing Shorthorn exhibitors and families throughout the fall show season. The American Royal is just around the corner, and we are excited to be showing in the new facility this year. Once again, the American Shorthorn Association Annual Meeting will be held in conjunction with this prestigious event. Be sure to review the Annual Meeting schedule on page 50 and check the delegate list on page 20-21 to see if you have been selected to represent your state. Following the American Royal, attention will quickly turn toward the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville,

14

Kentucky. With construction continuing at the Kentucky Exposition Center, exhibitors can expect changes to the facility setup this year, including some differences from last year’s construction layout. We will continue to share updates as plans develop, so be sure to keep an eye on your inbox and ASA communications as we get closer to the show. NAILE Stalling Reminder One of the most important NAILE deadlines to keep in mind is November 1 — stalling requests are due to Wade Minihan. Space at NAILE is always at a premium, and with the ongoing construction, available space may be even more limited this year. To help accommodate tack and equipment space, exhibitors are encouraged to enter more head than they plan to bring to the show. For example, if you enter 10 animals, you may be allotted approximately seven stalls, as NAILE has historically reduced

the space available to the Shorthorn breed by about 30%. Please remember that cattle entered only in the Junior Show will not be stalled in the Shorthorn barn. If you plan to show exclusively in the Junior division, you will need to make separate stalling arrangements. Exhibitors looking to secure space in the Shorthorn barn are encouraged to enter cattle in both the Open and Junior shows. We also encourage your ‘extra entries for space” to be entered in the Open Show. There is a lot to keep track of as we head into the fall show season, and we are here to help make the process as smooth as possible. For everything you need to know to prepare for NAILE, including important deadlines, check-in information and show details, be sure to turn to page 16. We look forward to seeing you at the shows this fall!

Intent to Run Members Announce Intent to Run for ASA Board of Directors Andy Scott - I grew up in east central Oklahoma, where agriculture and livestock were an important part of my early life. Some of my earliest memories are of working alongside my grandfather on his wheat farm and with his commercial Hereford cattle. That farm was originally acquired during the Oklahoma Land Run of 1892. The lessons I learned there about agriculture, livestock, hard work, and stewardship have stayed with me throughout my life. I showed Hereford cattle throughout my youth, developing an appreciation for the livestock industry and the people who make it special. Today, I continue to make my living in the cattle business. I currently manage the Seminole Division of Christensen Ranch. This experience has given me a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing today’s cattle producers, as well as an appreciation for the importance of a strong and progressive breed association. My wife, Jamie, and I have been married since 2001, and we are blessed with two children, Ty, 25, and Abbi, 16. Our family is also very involved in rodeo, which has provided us with many opportunities to stay connected to the livestock industry and the people who make up the broader agricultural community. Rodeo has reinforced the values of hard work, dedication, sportsmanship, and commitment that are important to our family. Our family’s journey into the Shorthorn breed began when our children chose Shorthorns to show. What started as an opportunity for our children quickly became a passion for our entire family. We fell in love with the breed, but just as

18

shorthorn country • october 2026

importantly, we fell in love with the people and the sense of community within both the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association and the American Shorthorn Association. We have been proud to be part of the Shorthorn family ever since and have never looked back. Our children’s success in the show ring has also been an important part of our family’s Shorthorn journey. Abbi showed 4S Primabella M21, who was a two-time EDGE National Champion at Cattlemen’s Congress. Primabella was also reserve grand EDGE heifer at Junior Nationals in Grand Island. She has also had success with her bred-and-owned steers, including winning Shorthorn Breed Champion in the steer show at the 2022 Tulsa State Fair and being named Reserve Grand Prospect Steer at the 2023 Junior Nationals. Since becoming involved in the breed, we have continued to grow our Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus cattle with a qualityfocused approach. What began with our children showing Shorthorns has grown into a herd of approximately 70 Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus cows. Our goal has been to build cattle that are not only competitive in the show ring, but also functional, productive, and valuable to the breeders and commercial cattlemen who invest in them. I am currently serving my second term on the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association Board. Serving at the state level has given me an opportunity to learn, listen, work with fellow members, and better understand the responsibility that comes with representing an association and its membership. When I was asked—and encouraged— to run for a seat on the American Shorthorn Association Board, I was both shocked and deeply honored. I did not take the invitation lightly. I believe that being a member of an association is not only an honor, but also a responsibility to serve and give back to the organization and the

people who have invested so much in it. My professional life has also been centered around service. I spent many years working as a paramedic and am a retired volunteer firefighter. Those experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, accountability, listening to others, making thoughtful decisions, and putting the needs of others ahead of yourself. If elected to the American Shorthorn Association Board, I hope to lend my experience, knowledge, and perspective to help do what is best for the entire association. At the same time, I recognize that I still have much to learn, and I look forward to learning from the experiences, ideas, and perspectives of other members and breeders. I am grateful for the encouragement that led me to consider this opportunity, and I would be honored to serve the American Shorthorn Association and its membership. My goal is simple: to listen, to serve, and to do my part to help ensure a strong future for the Shorthorn breed and the generations who will carry it forward. Cory Bollum Fellow Shorthorn Breeders: It is with great pride and honor that I write this letter asking for the opportunity to be re-elected to a seat on the Board of Directors at this years ASA annual meeting. I am located in Austin, MN and our multi-generational farm that was homesteaded in 1863 is located in Goodhue, MN. Bollum Family Shorthorns (BFS) ownership today consists of 3 siblings (Cory, Carl, and LeAnn Bollum) and our respective families. Mary and I have 3 grown children Connor, Josh, and Emily that are also involved in BFS. The seventh generation of Bollum’s arrived

in MN this spring as Connor and Trisha added a little one, Wallie! The operation today runs over 600 acres and the cow herd consists of 125 cows, mostly all purebred Shorthorn and a few commercial cows used as recips. We have held our own annual on-line “Red, White, and Roan” production sale for the last 15 years. I have been active and involved with our home state (MN) Shorthorn Association for many years. I have made a career at Hormel Foods Corporation, for 35 years. I have been involved in various different positions and locations for the Fortune 500 Global Branded Food company. Currently, I am the Director of Pork Operations and Procurement and involved with many aspects of leadership of a large scale food production operation and one of the most iconic and popular brands in the U.S. meat industry. I believe the Shorthorn breed is positioned to capitalize on the many opportunities available in the cattle industry today. We have the ability due to our breeds exceptional maternal traits, superior heterosis and disposition advantages to take a sizable chunk of market share away. I welcome the chance to represent this great breed and try to help bring both the show cattle side and the commercial cattle side of Shorthorns to be more unified and be “the breed” for the next generation. Tyler Cates - It is with great honor and careful consideration that I ask for your support as I seek re-election to the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. My life has been Shorthorn cattle from the time I was old enough to walk alongside my grandfather, father, and uncle. I anxiously awaited each month’s issue of Shorthorn Country, and I learned to read by memorizing each issue. Those early experiences created a passion and love for the Shorthorn breed that remain just as strong today. Serving on the Board has given me the opportunity to give back to a breed and a membership that have been such an important part of my life. My wife, Cortney, and I, along with our daughter, Piper, a fourth-generation Shorthorn breeder, are very proud of our involvement in this breed and excited about the direction the American Shorthorn Association is heading. During my time on the Board, I have gained an even greater appreciation for the responsibility that comes with representing our membership. I have learned that moving a breed forward requires listening to our breeders, understanding the challenges they face, and working together to make decisions that benefit Shorthorns as a whole. I have also had the privilege of attending and judging many cattle shows across the country. Those experiences have allowed

me to see firsthand the tremendous progress being made by Shorthorn breeders in all segments of our industry. I can say with great pride that the Shorthorn breed has made tremendous strides in producing cattle that are more consistent, competitive, and useful across the entire beef industry. The cattle we exhibit in the yards and in the showring have never been more uniform, and I believe the continued strength and record numbers we are seeing in many avenues of our breed’s beef business are a true testament to the dedication of our breeders and the progress we have made together. One of the things I value most about the Shorthorn breed is the family-friendly, wholesome environment that makes it such a great place to raise children. Our junior program and Junior Nationals are second to none. I believe it is extremely important that we maintain that focus and continue to provide our young people with opportunities to learn, compete, build friendships, and develop the skills that will make them the future leaders of our breed. As the father of a fourthgeneration Shorthorn breeder, this is more than an organizational priority to me—it is personal. At the same time, I believe the future of Shorthorns must extend well beyond our junior program and show ring. My vision for the breed is to provide opportunities for beef producers in every segment of the industry. I am very proud of the commercial acceptance our breed has gained throughout the beef industry, and there are numerous Shorthorn breeders who deserve tremendous credit for making that possible. That success did not happen by chance or overnight. It came through years of dedication, hard work, innovation, and a willingness to recognize where we needed to improve. We believed we had the right product, and we made the necessary modifications to make that product more valuable and relevant to today’s cattle industry. I believe that same mindset must continue. The cattle business is constantly evolving, and Shorthorns must evolve with it while never losing the qualities that make our breed unique. I believe we must continue to encourage our members to collect and submit meaningful data and expand the use of DNA testing. The more information we have about our cattle, the better equipped we will be to identify strengths, address weaknesses, and make sound breeding decisions. Ultimately, our goal should be to provide cattle that are functional, profitable, and competitive for the commercial cattleman. We are currently seeing strong markets for feeder cattle and cull cows, along with continued opportunities in freezer beef and other direct-to-consumer markets. The cattle industry is in a good place, but opportunity alone does not guarantee success. I am a firm believer that, whether it is the cattle business or any other business, success comes down to understanding

supply and demand and providing a product that people want. I believe our responsibility as breeders is to identify what consumers and cattle buyers in our individual markets are looking for and then work to provide that product. I also believe the responsibility of our leadership is to encourage and support our membership as we work toward that goal. We need to make Shorthorn cattle as desirable, useful, and competitive as possible while continuing to promote the many strengths our breed has to offer. Perhaps most importantly, I believe we must continue to work together. We are a Shorthorn family, and our greatest strength is the people within this breed. Whether our focus is the show ring, the junior program, registered cattle, commercial cattle, or direct-to-consumer beef, we all have a place in the future of Shorthorns. We should celebrate those differences, support one another, and unite in showcasing everything our breed has to offer. If given the opportunity to serve another term on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, I will continue to bring the same passion, dedication, and commitment that I have always had for this breed. I will continue to listen to our membership, work toward practical solutions, and make decisions with the long-term success of the Shorthorn breed in mind. My strongest asset has always been my passion for Shorthorn cattle and my desire to see this breed succeed. But after serving on the Board, I have an even greater appreciation for the responsibility we have to protect what previous generations built while continuing to improve it for those who will follow us. I am especially motivated by the opportunity to build a stronger future for my daughter, Piper, and for the many generations of Shorthorn breeders who will come after us. I want to help ensure that the Shorthorn breed remains a place where families can build a life together, where young people can find a lifelong passion, and where cattlemen and women can raise a product that is respected and profitable throughout the beef industry. I would be honored to have your support for another term on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. Thank you for the opportunity to serve a breed that has given my family and me so much.

Performance Award Winners for 2025 Recognized at the American Shorthorn Association’s Awards Luncheon on October 24, 2026

On the following pages, you will find a list of the Shorthorn breed’s honor roll of performance champions, also known as the Pacer Performance Awards for 2025. Congratulations to all breeders and their animals who qualify for these designations. It’s not an easy task for a sire or dam to qualify for these awards! To understand the standards these animals must meet to qualify for these various categories, check out the last page of these award winners. The cows listed are all that are newly

qualified for the Performance Award categories based off their 2024 calves. The youngest cows to qualify for this set of awards are the 2021 born females that qualified on their first three calves in 2023, 2024 and 2025. We treat the Performance Awards recognition like a “hall of fame” induction: once you get recognized, you’re in for life! A cow could certainly meet the qualifications for Performance or Pacesetter Dam multiple times in her life (and many do!), but the cow is only honored with the recognition

the first time she qualifies. If you have a cow that you feel qualifies for the 2025 awards and do not find her on the list, it’s likely because she was a past qualifier who has already been recognized. In Digital Beef, each qualifying animal has an “Awards” tab you can click to see when and what recognition your animal has received. A cow can be recognized as a Performance Dam and then later in life be recognized as a Pacesetter Dam as well.

What is your favorite cattle show you have exhibited at? Why? The American Royal because it was laid back and I enjoyed the weather! What are your future plans? I am still undecided on the path I am going to take but I do know I want to be involved with the cattle industry. What other activities are you involved in outside of AJSA? I attend and participate in Leadership Development Events and Career Development Events through my FFA chapter.

The Breed that Built Me

Deck the Stalls

American Junior Shorthorn Board of Directors. This position is not just about me and my story, it’s a representation of what the Shorthorn breed can do for you. Through scholarships, contests, the Junior Board itself and, most importantly, the people within the breed, there is so many ways to grow into the person you are meant to be. Opportunities will open the door, but it’s the people within this breed who will help you walk through it. I am so fortunate to have mentors who were patient and willing to answer the questions I was too nervous to ask. They taught me things I didn’t know I needed to learn, gave me their time, and encouraged me to take opportunities that felt bigger than I was ready for. To them, they were just giving me showmanship tips or teaching me how to fit a tailhead, but to me, it was far more than teaching me about cattle. They helped shape the leader, showman and person I am today. Now I am on the other side of the experience. Serving on the AJSA Board of Directors is not simply an opportunity to give back. It is an opportunity to become the mentor like so many others have been for me. I want to create an environment where any young junior can walk into a room, ask questions, try something new, and realize they are right where they should be. The greatest representation of how this breed has built me will not be found in the positions I’ve held or banners I have won. It will be found in my ability to give back to the people that has given so much to me.

Words of Advice

“ The greatest representation of how this breed has built me will not be found in the positions I’ve held or banners I have won. It will be found in my ability to give back to the people that has given so much to me.

“

There are certain things that become a part of who we are. Places we grow up, mistakes we’ve made, people who have walked with us and help us discover what we are capable of. For me, it’s never been a building or hometown. It has been the Shorthorn breed and the people in it. When I think back on my time in the breed, I think of more than the cattle. I think about the people who have believed in me, the shows that taught me how to handle success and disappointment, the conversations that challenged what I thought I knew and the opportunities that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Somewhere between my first show and countless shows thus far, this breed became more than something I participated in. It became a part of who I am. The breed has shaped the way I lead and communicate, how I care for livestock and shaped the way I look at the future of the beef industry. Above all, it has given me the ability to contribute. Looking back, I can see that every experience was building something in me I didn’t yet understand. My journey started when I was just 9 years old. Being a first-generation Shorthorn breeder, it took countless hours of watching, listening, and persistence to be where I am today. It is daunting to walk into a room filled with people who have much more experience and knowledge, but I did not let that stop me. I ended up finding some of the best supporters and mentors, who have become family to me. Without these Shorthorn breeders, I would have never found this opportunity to serve on the

News & Notes Farewells Routt County native and thirdgeneration rancher William “Bill” Wesley Gay passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at his home near the bottom of Rabbit Ears Pass. He was 80 years old. Bill often quipped that he was a surprise for his parents Robert “Bob” and Elaine Gay when he arrived on June 25, 1946, their third child after daughters Roberta and Margaret. He would go on to live a life filled with surprises for himself and those around him. From an early age, Bill surprised his family and community with a unique connection to animals, livestock and pets alike. Whether it was ‘training’ his horse to race back and forth from the family’s ranch to the Pleasant Valley country school, quickly understanding what his dad was teaching him about animal husbandry, or picking out the best horse, cow, bull or lamb in any group, Bill’s connection to animals surprised many. After a childhood filled with 4-H, wrestling, and academics, Bill graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1965 and went on to attend Colorado State University on an academic scholarship, where he became a top livestock judge while completing his degree in Agricultural Journalism. Soon after graduating, he himself was surprised when he was chosen to represent Colorado as an International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) delegate to the Philippines, where he lived with families to learn their methods of agricultural production and ways of life. The 1970s and 1980s brought a number of surprises to Bill and his family as he moved between the family ranch in Pleasant Valley and a number of other locales, taking advantage of opportunities which came his way. One of the biggest surprises of Bill’s life came when he successfully answered a newspaper ad looking for charismatic,

horse-savvy and unattached young men to work for Philip-Morris International as Marlboro Men in Europe. Because he could drive 4-and-6 horse teams well, Bill ended up driving the Marlboro stagecoach across much of Europe for over a year. Completing his contract at Frontier Village theme park in California, he gave visitors an ‘Old West’ experience in horse-drawn carts, wagons, and stagecoaches. He found that he enjoyed the West Coast and all it had to offer, too. Upon his return to Colorado, he and his dad partnered to buy a small ranch in Orchard to expand the family’s ability to run more cattle and calve-out heifers in an environment more forgiving than Steamboat Springs. The call to come back to California proved too strong, however, and Bill returned to the San Francisco area to work for the Trust for Public Lands (TPL), a then-burgeoning land conservation group. Using his degree and his personal connection to and knowledge of agriculture, Bill traveled across the country promoting a then-new concept in land conservation: conservation easements, a tool used to protect private lands from development. Bill helped write the first conservation easement in Colorado for TPL, work that he would continue to advocate for and promote in Northwest Colorado when he returned home to the family ranch permanently in 1985. The next couple of decades saw Bill working with his parents and ranch employees to manage the livestock and land that made up Green Creek Ranch. He became involved in many community activities and reconnected with Routt County 4-H, where he was the livestock judging coach for over 20 years. Never having had children of his own, Bill thought it was important to ‘give back’ to area youth and the 4-H program that had been so impactful to his own life. As fellow Routt County native and rancher Jim Stanko said when presenting Bill the Tread of Pioneers (now Steamboat History) Museum Leckenby Award for outstanding contributions to the community in 2014,

“Over those years, he built a successful judging team that traveled to a large tournament on the Eastern Slope and won it. It really shocked the heck out of the people in Adams County who were used to winning.” He served on the museum’s board of directors for several years, too, where staff recall he was a fierce advocate for them and their work. Bill contributed to the community in a number of ways for many years, surprising no one when he served many of the groups his father Bob had also served, including the Routt County Cattlemen’s Association and Routt County Fair Board. People were surprised, however, when Bill took a different approach to these roles, often pushing people to think in new and different ways, challenging the status-quo, and pushing hard for ideas he believed in. That often surprising, headstrong approach helped him champion land conservation and community stewardship in his own backyard, too. He served on the Routt County Purchase of Development Rights advisory committee, the Yampa Valley Land Trust board of directors, and the Routt County Multi-Modal Committee, where he made surprising connections to the bicycling community… which was often at odds with agricultural producers. Bill also surprised his family when he began changing the family’s long-time Hereford-based cow herd to one that had much more Angus influence. This change, along with working with his mother to place a portion of the family ranch into conservation easement, lead to one of the achievements Bill was most proud of when he and Green Creek Ranch were named the Angus Journal’s Land Stewardship Award winner in 2000. He and his herd were featured on the front cover of the national publication, along with views of Pleasant Valley. While cattle were the ranch’s bread-andbutter, Bill’s true passion was keeping alive the foundation quarter horse families based in Routt County and the Intermountain West. Claiming to have the most direct

descendants of quarter horse greats Old Fred, Peter McCue, Starduster and others, Bill and his horses had a strong following of others who shared his passion for horses that could work cattle all week and then rope and race at the weekend rodeo. After selling horses to other breeders on the east coast, west coast, and many places in-between, Bill surprised others in the business when he called it quits in 2012 and dispersed his herd. After the family ranch sold in 2015, he continued to surprise folks when he began raising shorthorn cattle on his then newlypurchased Alpen Glow Ranch in the South Valley. He continued his conservation

efforts with his new property, placing most of it into conservation easement to help protect the views of the valley bottom. Bill’s accomplishments of the past few decades were always tempered by health issues he overcame many times, surprising everyone by beating overwhelming odds on more than one occasion. Complications related to diabetes finally overcame him, however, and he passed this world at peace, knowing he’d made his mark on the world. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Robert “Bob” and Elaine Becker Gay, and Brother-in-Law Delmar Moellenberg. He is survived by his sisters Roberta Moellenberg of Idalia, and Margaret (Rob) Hagenbuch

of Oak Creek; nieces Gay (Jeff) Uhland of Eads; Joy (Cody) Akey of Wray; Dell Rae (Mike) Ciaravola of Loveland; Heidi (Mike) Dowell of Odessa, FL; nephew Todd (Sarah) Hagenbuch of Phippsburg; several great nieces and great nephews, and numerous cousins. Special thanks to the many excellent caregivers Bill had in recent years from Blue Skies Nursing, with special regard given to founder and constant friend Shani Bohlin. Special acknowledgement to Tyler Jacox and Jessica Reagon as well, who have served as Bill’s companions and caregivers for several years.
