The post office building, the so-called “Rostbalken” due to its vivid red metal cladding, will soon change face due to a nearly ended competition (Nauentor) that will transform the old swiss post machine into a small office city. The challenge, and provocation, is to propose a more gentle re.use of the structure converging all the requirements inside the given volume of the building. With an overall usable area of 120.000 square meters the games are just started.

The main focus of the inteventions consists on a housing project to be placed on the last floors, craving for space and light to be reachable by every apartment units. A sort of game has been played to study the bearing grid in order to understand the possibilities of intervention. A square geometric composition originated from the existing disposition, which then generated modular typologies that combined toghether gave birth to a complex system of tetris-like apartment. The aim is to insert new uses and new possibilities in a given skeleton, granting new life to the building and to the new inhabitants.
Elevated squares will became places to discover by the people passing by. Green to implement vegetation in a strong and heavy concrete context. air and light to reach almost every inch of the place to make the building open to the exterior and viceversa.

The so called “Invisible Skyscraper” will return to its original glory of the ‘60s. A series of interventions [02_1], focusing mainly on the ground floor, will bring back life to the skyscraper. So much unused space could potentially be something profitable for the tower not only money wise speaking. New shops, new identities, new spaces for the inhabitants are the key elements of this architectural reuse.

Rimini Pub & Disco Crawl
A place where people can enjoy a glass of wine overseeing the beautiful Riviera during the long summer nights.

The aim is to bring the skyscraper as it could possibly be in the 60s. Maybe a bit different but a landmark and a symbol for Rimini.
Attract people is just a way to make it appreciated more and not be an “INVISIBLE” building. new common spaces for the residents and public ones to bring inside some of the playful life of the city. A disco at the underground floor is just an idea following the standards the Riviera as to attract more and new people every year and more important to gain money from all of this. Money that could be invested in ammodernisation works on the skyscraper itself that need to stay up to the new constructions standards.

Disco Stupenda
The Riviera Romagnola is nothing without a proper night life, full of discos, cocktails and fun.
Hipotesis of a possible business plan the tenants can follow in several steps to achieve the finally desired visibility. In a way or another money is needed in order to invest it in more phases that could bring even more money and so on.

Aircave

Milano,
Italy
In an increasingly polluted world, architecture must take a firm line on sustainability and cope with modern issues. In Milan, one of the most polluted cities in Italy, work has been done in the Porta Nuova district, one of the most modern and environmentally friendly in the city. The project includes an exhibition center as the neighborhood’s center of interest. It is envisaged thanks to a pneumatic structure, easily assembled and movable, an empty space, as flexible as possible, tuning to the demands of the fashion set design, one of the most successful fields in Milan.

project concept idea scheme

OUTSIDE
pvc membrane
airsupply connection
(shapes changing depending on geometries, air supply and pression)
air support dry and clean air only
INSIDE
air drenage, flexible tube, perforated circulating through entire construction fixed to straplink
aluminium profile

To compete against ready made set designs that can easily be placed inside a box, a pneumatic structure has been studied to achieve such level of demands for a fashion world that is constantly moving and changing. There are no fixed characteristics, everything is changing in a constant “Divenire” being ready for any necessities. All this while being on a concrete pedestal over Porta Nuova park ( the BAM) which can, at the same time, used for many opportunities welcoming the visitors as an open architecture.

As the building could be functioning as a place for catwalks , it needs to properly work and function as a machine, not to interrupt the highest moment of the year for stylist and models. Separate passages and flows can converge alltogether to the apex of the event, being the catwalk itself on the roof terrace of the building. Glass is used to go against solid concrete pillars and bearing structure, to achieve something as simple as possible to not disturb the real subject that would be what’s happening on the inside.

Genova, Italy
The semester’s work focused on the Italian city of Genoa to develop a comprehensive design proposal for a site near the historic center, in an area that was formerly part of the port infrastructure. The project was to create a coherent urban strategy to be tested and refined at a larger scale so as to generate realistic design proposals as a form of purposeful planning. The project pits itself against issues related to contemporary affordable housing and the evolving image of the city. Of particular interest is the exploration of low towers as a building type and how they can increase density and create a sense of proximity. Consideration will be given to strategies that could be adopted in the future to increase urban density by exploiting low towers precisely and ways to generate contemporary housing solutions.

Biennale exposition
The work behind Aires Mateus’ exposition for the Venice Biennale was the most intense and satisfying experience of the internship. 2200x300x8 cm installation composed by almost 400 hand-casted slabs of concrete. Around 10 tons of concrete were used in order to achieve these dimensions. It took three months of work plus one or two months of research for 5 person to realise and install this project in Venice.

HOW WILL WE LIVE TOGETHER ?
Photography Workshop with Armin Linke
Bellinzona,
Switzerland
During the academic workshop in Mendrisio, assisted by Armin Linke, we had a walk around Bellinzona and some of its landmark and activities. The aim was to photograph. That’s it.
Although being curious of what was around us, what was going on and trying to see the world from different perspectives, spacing from details to wide angles takes. We then collectively, as group of students doing the workshop, choose the best pictures for us and make a photographic book.
