WE’LL SEE YOU TONIGHT AT OKTOBERFEST! SATURDAY, 10.28.23 Enjoy the festivities and honor St. Francis for his love and care for creation by supporting the La Plata County Humane Society. Join us at the 5pm Family Mass and afterward, we'll head to the gym for food, drinks, fall fun, and pumpkin carving & painting with family, friends, and community members! What to bring: Middle Schoolers: Bring your own big pumpkin for carving. Smaller pumpkins will be provided for painting. Thank you, Vagneur family, for purchasing the mini pumpkins! Cash or card for donations at the bar, bake sale, and handmade goods Help us plan ahead by purchasing your food and drink tickets HERE. It's quick and easy. Craft beer, cider, and wine will be offered for a suggested $5 donation. Thank you to SKA Brewing for donating the beer! There are still a few volunteer spots available to help with set up and take down HERE. Middle school students will be hosting a bake sale, offering handmade goods for sale, and face painting. The 4th-grade class is collecting items for the Humane Society. *See the list below. Items can be dropped off in the box at the front entry or at the event. Participation is completely voluntary. Bid on a basket of goodies and a gift certificate to keep your pet happy and healthy. Thank you, Riverview Animal Hospital, for the wonderful donation! We would love to see our young alumni high school students, older siblings, and former teachers and staff! We will have tables reserved for these guests to visit with one another, carve pumpkins, and catch up on post St.Columba life. Spread the word! Special furry (and adoptable) guests from LPCHS! HUMANE SOCIETY NEEDS From the 4th Grade Regarding Items in Need: Our Oktoberfest will benefit the La Plata County Humane Society. They have also given us a list of their most urgent needs. Items can be dropped off at the event. Participation is completely voluntary. HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES Our annual K-8 Halloween Costume Parade and Trick or Treat celebration will take place on Tuesday, October 31st at 1:45. The students will parade and trick-or-treat around our campus. Families are encouraged to come and watch the parade! The Halloween celebration includes the parade and trick-or-treating, and afterward, students will enjoy a fun activity in their classroom with their teacher if there's time. This IS the celebration and there will not be a separate classroom party. Please click HERE to review the costume letter from Mr. Chick that was emailed out last week.
SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE FOR NOVEMBER STEAM! After school STEAM is every Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 and is open to all Kindergarteners-4th graders. The four November sessions will focus on Biology fun with lessons on DNA, the skeletal system, pollination, and dissection of owl pellets. This session will be $60. Click HERE to register now. PRAYER & PRAISE K-8 students will be attending our next Prayer & Praise Assembly on Thursday, November 2nd, at 8:15. Families are invited to join us as we enjoy lessons from Fr. Kevin and Mr. Chick, introduce our monthly Friendzy theme, and honor those students who have gone above and beyond expectations and are receiving a St. Columba award for the month. At this assembly, we will also be recognizing those students who made honor roll for the 1st quarter. We hope to see you there!

VETERANS MASS We will be having a special Mass for our Veterans on November 8th at 8:15. Remember that there we will not have school on November 10th in honor of veterans day. If you are a veteran, please email office@stcolumbaschooldurango.org so we can add you to our list. If you have a special veteran in your life, please also let the office know so we can send them a personal invitation and honor them.
NINJA 4 VETS We are excited to be doing Ninjas for Vets again this year! Ninjas4Vets is an organization that helps today's youth connect, appreciate, and honor our veterans!! All you have to do is make a “Thank You For Your Service” poster and place it on a Veteran’s door on, Thursday, November 9th, Veteran’s Day Eve and sprint to your parent’s car! Please reach out to Susan Zaremba (school parent 1st,4th,6th) at susanzaremba@hotmail.com to honor a Vet in your life or to help make a poster for our local VFW chapter. VETERANS DAY PARADE Friday, November 10 at 11am: Let’s meet as a community to watch the Veteran’s Day Parade. Meet on the 8th block of Main Avenue in front of the Main Mall. Parents, please attend with your child(ren). This is not a drop off your child event.
THINGS TO REMEMBER: Day of the Dead: It’s not too late! Following St. Columba tradition, our school altar for the Day of the Dead is ready. If your family would like to participate, please send a picture of your loved ones into the school. This celebration will be part of the Spanish class with the cultural tradition of the celebration. Please make sure each student knows the name of the person they are remembering and something that they enjoyed. Please click HERE for the site and security code you will need for access. Orders need to be placed by November 15th. Helpful hint: If you are on the page with all of the students, please scroll all the way to the bottom to find the class pictures. Picture make ups and retakes are scheduled for November 7th for anyone that missed picture day or isn't happy with the photos. Book Fair is Coming: Our annual Scholastic book fair is returning November 13-17. Get a jump on some of your holiday shopping while supporting St. Columba School at the same time. Stop by our Scholastic Book Fair before or after school November 13-17 or during our Thanksgiving lunch. This is something our students truly love and look forward to each year! The book fair will include lots of great selections for all ages, preschool-8th grade!! We are in need of several volunteers to help our book fair run smoothly. Service Hours Tracking: With Oktoberfest, field trips, kitchen and classroom help, and lots of upcoming opportunities, so many of our volunteers are helping in so many ways. Thank you!! Based on the readings for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: Ex 22:20-26/1 Thes 1:5c-10/Mt 22:34-40 Those foreigners living among God’s people are given a privileged status, along with widows and orphans. These groups have a special reliance upon God, and in their dependence have become particularly dear to Him. God is less concerned about power and independence that he is with dependence and powerlessness. How do you see yourself in terms of your power and independence before God? St. Paul reminds his hearers of the value of imitation, that the Thessalonians have imitated him, and thus themselves have become models for all the believers in Greece. How have you considered yourself a model for other believers? Are there models that you seek to emulate? Jesus sums up the whole law by combining the Shema, Israel’s central belief and credal statement from the book of Deuteronomy, with the law from Leviticus that demands love of neighbor. If you were to articulate your central moral code, a statement of the law that you follow, what would you include? What is vitally important to you in terms of a code to live by?
