THANK YOU! Seeing St. Columba students giving back to the community makes our hearts happy! This group of Oktoberfest helpers delivered our donation check to @lpchs yesterday. They also got to meet a sweet, adoptable dog and visit with many adorable, adoptable cats and kittens. Thank you again to all who volunteered for and supported Oktoberfest, and helped us bless the La Plata County Humane Society!
Veterans Day Parade November 11th 11:00 LET’S MEET AS A COMMUNITY TO WATCH THE VETERAN’S DAY PARADE. MEET ON THE 8TH BLOCK OF MAIN AVENUE IN FRONT OF THE MAIN MALL. PARENTS, PLEASE ATTEND WITH YOUR CHILD(REN). THIS IS NOT A DROP OFF YOUR CHILD EVENT.
NINJAS4VETS In honor of Veterans Day, our 1st and 6th grade students joined forces through our “student buddy program” and made posters to honor and appreciate the Veterans in our community. The posters were delivered last night so the Veterans would wake up to a sweet surprise on their front porch this morning. We thank all Veterans for their selfless service and include you in our prayers this Veterans Day!
JOIN US FOR THANKSGIVING LUNCH! We invite all St. Columba families to join us for our annual Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday, November 16th. Adult tickets are $10 each. Your tickets will be added directly to your Blackbaud tuition account. Students will be charged their normal lunch price, deducted from/charged to their account. Please take a moment to RSVP HERE to help us plan. Service times are as follows by student’s last name: A-G 11:00-11:40 H-M 11:40-12:20 N-Z 12:20-1:00 The students will also be allowed to dress up for the day of this special event. They are encouraged to wear a nice outfit, as they would for a Thanksgiving dinner. Please refer to the Thanksgiving letter that was sent home for specifics and expectations.
SERVICE HOURS OPPORTUNITY: THANKSGIVING LUNCH Our traditional Thanksgiving lunch where students and families enjoy lunch together is planned for Thursday, November 16. You don’t want to miss it! As always, your helping hands would be greatly appreciated in making this lunch special and enjoyable for all. Volunteers are needed for set up, clean up, serving, and preparing side dishes. This is a fun way to serve and connect with your St. Columba community. Please review the available slots HERE. Thank you so much!
BOOK FAIR HELP NEEDED! Our annual Scholastic book fair is returning November 13-17. Get a jump on some of your holiday shopping while supporting St. Columba School at the same time. Stop by our Scholastic Book Fair before or after school November 1317 or during our Thanksgiving lunch. This is something our students truly love and look forward to each year! The book fair will include lots of great selections for all ages, preschool-8th grade!! We are in need of several volunteers to help our book fair run smoothly. Practical Homework Strategies for You and Your Student Parent Workshop
Please join us at 5:30 on Tuesday, November 14th as we help you practically navigate homework with your student. Whether your student struggles with homework or not, we will offer tools, strategies, and encouragement to help you navigate this area of school. Presented by Wendy Quick and Krista Schwettman. Wendy has 22 years of experience in curriculum design, instructional strategy innovation, and special education. Wendy is an adjunct professor at Fort Lewis College, specializing in systematically teaching structured literacy and methods for students across all learning abilities. Wendy currently provides differentiated instructional tools, strategies, and professional development for our St. Columba faculty. Krista is a mother of 3 boys in 6th, 3rd and 1st grade. She has 7 years of practical experience in neurodiverse parenting as well as sensory processing, ADHD, and trauma-informed caregiving. Krista currently works at the school as a Student Support Specialist, offering support to students, staff, and parents. We hope to see you there! THANKSGIVING OFFERTORY COLLECTION St Columba School Fall Drive will provide needed items for 2 service agencies this year: St Columba Food Pantry and the Grub Hub at Fort Lewis College. St Columba Food Pantry- The Pantry is supported totally through donations of food and financial donations and partners with service agencies in our communities. During the first six months of 2023, The Pantry served 777 families 795 bags of food! This is a significant increase from totals collected last year during this same time period. Then, 382 families received 397 bags of food.The Food Pantry provides the La Plata Family Centers 20 bags of food per week for hungry families seeking services, plus weekly snacks for 75 children who attend its afternoon programs. Fort Lewis College Grub Hub picks up 20 bags of food two weeks per month for its students in need. Community Compassion Outreach picks up 7 bags of food every Friday for families attending its Saturday activities. Additionally, we continue to serve individuals who come to the Food Pantry for a bag of food. In summary, our volunteers currently prepare and provide to the community an average of 155 bags of food per month. Incredible growth. The Food Pantry could use additional donations of these items: Canned tuna or chicken, Hearty soup in a can, Boxed cereal or oatmeal, Canned fruit, Container of jam or jelly, Meal in a can (Spaghetti-Os, beef stew, etc.) Fort Lewis College (FLC) Grub Hub- The Grub Hub provides food and housing assistance to students as well as resource navigation and community outreach. Surprisingly, in a recent survey of 771 students in the past 12 months at FLC, 49% experienced food insecurity, 56% experienced housing insecurity, and 18% experienced homelessness. Many students, particularly international and Alaskan students often come to FLC without essential supplies. Donations of the items below would help set the students up for success! Twin xl sheet sets, pillows, comforters, bath towels and washcloths, laundry bags, shower caddies, notebooks, folders, and backpacks.
