ENGLISH Do you love to read and write? Do you wonder about language? Do you want to pursue your passion for reading, language, and writing while gaining critical thinking and communication skills highly valued by employers? To express yourself well when speaking or writing is a fundamental strength highly valued in any career or grad program. Being able to analyze language is another valuable skill. Through exploration and analysis of diverse literature and ideas, you’ll hone your critical thinking skills and increase your own facility of the English language. Explore diverse aesthetic, linguistic, and cultural traditions in global contexts of social justice. Our graduates leave with a broad understanding of literary studies, linguistics, and writing, which prepares them for careers in a variety of fields. St. Kate’s English majors make notable contributions campus-wide, including to campus news in The Wheel; to Ariston, the annual literary and visual arts magazine; to the Tutoring and Learning Center as writing mentors; and to the Antonian Honors Program.

YOU WILL LEARN TO: • Read comprehensively and write effectively and imaginatively • Learn and utilize critical and literary theory, core areas of linguistics, and different creative genres in practicing critical literacy in writing • Contextualize language and literature globally and confront gender, race, ethnic, ability, and socioeconomic differences from a foundation of social justice • Pursue opportunities for career-readiness and professionalization

WOMEN: With a focus on women at our core, you’ll study with other women and nonbinary students committed to reflection and exploration of the big issues that matter. HANDS-ON: By incorporating projects from area business and community partners, our internship course gives students direct experience using their skills in the field.

CAREER PATHS TO EXPLORE EDUCATION Pursue a career in teaching, research, or leadership WRITING AND EDITING Become a novelist, editor, or work in advertising or website design NEWS AND JOURNALISM Tell compelling stories through media in written, audio, or video form PUBLIC RELATIONS Execute campaigns that strengthen the relationship between an organization and its key audiences MUSEUM AND LIBRARY CURATION Lead the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of collections or research, authenticate, evaluate, and categorize the items in a collection COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL SERVICES Work in public policy, public health, counseling, advocacy, programming, or administration, or pursue a law degree

SOCIAL JUSTICE: As core University values, social justice and anti-racism figure prominently in the department curriculum. URBAN OPPORTUNITY: Because we are an urban campus, students enjoy easy access to local theaters, art museums and exhibitions, and author readings and book launches.
