CRITICAL STUDIES OF RACE AND ETHNICITY Would you like to better understand race and ethnicity? Are you ready to gain an understanding of discrimination and oppression? Would you like to learn strategies to dismantle inequality? Critical Studies of Race and Ethnicity (CRST) is a nationally recognized, interdisciplinary program examining the concepts of discrimination, oppression, white privilege, and more. You’ll learn to think critically, analyzing the implications of race and ethnicity from different perspectives and recognizing discriminatory actions or reinforcing concepts in language and the media. This major is flexible, offering a second major option of Immigrants and Refugees, along with a nationally-unique Critical Hmong Studies minor. Learn how to increase our awareness of oppression and help to dismantle racism — no matter what career or graduate program you go on to pursue.
YOU WILL LEARN TO: • Recognize how race/ethnicity shape identity and opportunity in the U.S. • Understand the comparative systems of racial/ethnic classifications and the implications of immigration patterns and policy • Analyze how race and ethnicity is embedded in language, texts, historical documents, art, music, mass media, statistical records and academic writing/research • Think critically across disciplinary lines and analyze the implications of race/ethnicity from multiple perspectives • Identify and implement action plans for dismantling racism on multiple levels
