Action urged on station parking
Panicked buyers empty shelves By Esther Lauaki Wyndham residents are being urged not to stockpile key household items, with panicked shoppers leaving supermarket shelves empty as coronavirus fears spread. Last week, shelves had been stripped of dog food, long-life milk, pasta, nappies and hand sanitiser and Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets limited toilet paper purchases to customers. A Coles spokesperson told Star Weekly the temporary purchase limits would help to maintain stock levels in store while suppliers increase local production and distribution centres increase deliveries. Coles Werribee currently has a 48-hour turnaround on products.
“Coles has increased the number of deliveries to stores this week to improve availability on other popular products, such as long-life pantry staples and healthcare items, and our teams are working hard to fill the shelves as quickly as possible,” a statement from Coles said. “While there may be some temporary stock shortages, the vast majority of products in our stores and via Coles online remain available for customers. “It is not unusual for Coles to face disruption, which can occur for many reasons, from environmental factors such as floods, cyclones and bushfires, to third party disruptions. “As a result, we have comprehensive response plans in place across our network that cover contingencies including resourcing and product sourcing.”
Woolworths said its teams are continuing to work hard on restocking stores with long-life food and groceries from distribution centres. “The vast majority of the products in our range remain available for our customers as normal,” a spokesperson said. Panic buying has also placed pressure on Foodbank and other welfare organisations. Manor Lakes Foodbank manager Lynette Labuschagne said it was still too early to tell whether panic buying was having a significant impact on the welfare service. “We have noticed that donations of toilet paper have gone down,” Ms Labuschagne said. “We only had four packs donated recently so we couldn’t give out any toilet paper last week. “I will have to monitor what goods come in through our deliveries next week.”

Commuter carparks at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale railway stations are “at breaking point”, according to Wyndham’s mayor. In a letter to Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne, Cr Josh Gilligan has called for an update on the state’s commitment in 2018 to build an additional 500 car parking spaces at Tarneit. He said supporting commuters in a rapidly-growing community was “critical”. The letter, dated March 2, states cars parking outside of designated parking bays at both Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations was “causing congestion and putting commuters at risk”. “Supporting the community to use rail services to commute for work and study, instead of a car on our congested freeways is critical, even more so when you consider the rate of growth that our city is experiencing,” the letter states. Cr Gilligan asked Ms Horne for “an update on the progress of delivering these much-needed carparking spaces, as well as confirmation that consultation will occur with council on the planning and development work, prior to community consultation.” He posted a copy of the letter on his Facebook last week with the comment: “Our ongoing advocacy on reliable rail for Tarneit and Wyndham Vale commuters means we’ll hold the state and federal governments to account on their promises.” A state government spokesperson said: “We’re getting on with the early planning and design work to deliver more carparks at Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Tarneit and Watergardens stations. “Our Car Parks for Commuters Fund will deliver 1600 new and upgraded car parks across Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Watergardens and Tarneit train stations, freeing up parking in neighbouring streets and making it easier for more locals to catch the train.”

Farmer wins huge land payout By Alesha Capone A state government authority has been ordered to pay a Wyndham Vale farmer more than $48 million for his land, which could be needed for the future construction of an outer suburban highway. The matter was heard in the Supreme Court during November last year, with a decision issued last month. The court ordered Transport for Victoria – a statutory office of the Department of Transport that is responsible for the planning and
co-ordination of all transport systems in the state – to pay farmer John Murray Kilpatrick the sum of $48,948,716. The court heard that Mr Kilpatrick has owned and farmed land at 1000 Ballan Road, Wyndham Vale since 1972. During 2010, the state government placed an overlay on the land, designed to allow the government to acquire the land to build the future Outer Metropolitan Ring Road. But the court heard that Mr Kilpatrick only found out about the overlay in July 2017, after Wyndham council refused a permit to allow
him to build a single dwelling on the land, on grounds which included the subject land was, or might be, required for a public purpose. That same month, Mr Kilpatrick served a claim for compensation against Transport for Victoria, in relation to 60.88 hectares of his land which abuts Ballan Road and Spring Plains Road. In December 2018, Transport for Victoria paid Mr Kilpatrick “advance compensation” of $39.7 million. However, Mr Kilpatrick’s legal team argued the land would have been worth more if it was
used for residential subdivision. Mr Kilpatrick claimed compensation from Transport for Victoria under the Planning and Environment Act 1987. He also claimed expenses under the act, and interest under the Supreme Court Act 1986 (Victoria). Although interest and costs are yet to be determined in the matter, Supreme Court Justice Gregory Garde determined Mr Kilpatrick’s land was valued at $950,000 per hectare, resulting in the $48.94 million payout.

Groups unite to clean-up Wyndham “Areas cleaned up were a length of Lollypop Creek, several constructed wetlands around Manor Lakes, the Wyndham Vale train station surrounds and several streets adjoining the Manor Lakes P-12 College,” he said. Mr Boddington said among the waste collected was car parts, food and drink containers and builders’ rubbish. “Volunteers came from several community groups from around Wyndham, as well as residents of Manor Lakes and Wyndham Vale,” he said.
Community groups who helped out on the day included Club 60 Wyndham Vale, Wyndham Happy Life and Scouts. Clean Up Australia Day is held on the first Sunday in March every year. Hard-working volunteers collected about 350 kilograms of rubbish from various sites in Wyndham last week during a Clean Up Australia Day event. NatureWest – a not-for-profit association for individuals, groups and organisations that share an environmental vision for the wider Werribee catchment – hosted the clean-up, with support from Wyndham council. NatureWest chair Bruce Boddington said 115 volunteers from different multicultural groups registered to pick up rubbish on the day.
Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan is calling for more long-term traffic solutions, particularly in the north of the city, as works ramp up to remove the area’s three level crossings. The state government last week confirmed designs to remove the level crossings at Werribee Street and Old Geelong Road and announced a combined $355.5 million package to deliver the works. Cr Gilligan said the council welcomed the final designs and said it was “a great step forward in seeing dangerous level crossings removed along our rail line”. “We are particularly pleased with the fast-tracking of works to remove the crossing at Old Geelong Road – it’s great to see all three crossings removed in sync,” Cr Gilligan said. “We’ve been working closely with Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) – the agency delivering these works – in order to ensure the best possible outcomes we can for our community.” But Cr Gilligan said they were not the only traffic concerns in the area. “The level crossing removal [particularly at Werribee Street] will do very little to ease congestion on Wyndham roads. Concerns around potential congestion that could be caused by the current Old Geelong Road design is another area we will be focusing on. “The lack of cycling connections from Old Geelong Road to Federation Trail along the new road bridge is also a major concern.” He said a key focus of council’s work with LXRP was to ensure “good urban design solutions”.

A 19-year-old Tarneit man has been charged with driving-related offences, after a pursuit involving the Air Wing on February 29. Acting Sergeant Tom Barber said police observed a Honda Sedan “driving dangerously� in Austin Street, Werribee about 2.45am. Young musicians shine Talented students from MacKillop College Werribee will perform music from the big and small screens at a show to be held next week. The school will host its annual MacKillop Ensemble Evening on Tuesday, featuring compositions from films and television shows, including Stand By Me, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, The Wonder Years, The Sting, How to Train Your Dragon and Game of Thrones. The college’s junior and senior concert bands, choir, jazz ensemble and strings ensembles will participate in the concert. Two of the school’s performing arts captains, Natalie Symonds and Blake Mitchell from Year 12, will be among the young musicians taking to the stage. Blake plays piano, clarinet and saxophone,
while Natalie plays violin and piano. She is also a member of the Australian Girls Choir. “It’s nice to share the stage with other musicians at the school, who share the passion for music that we do,� she said. Blake said students had been rehearsing for the Ensemble Evening since the start of the term. “It’s showing our parents, friends and families the hard work we put in at school, and it’s entertaining,� he said. Seat shock Police were left shaking their heads after stopping a van in Point Cook on Sunday, March 1, which had a six-year-old child sitting in one of two lazy boy recliners installed in the back of the vehicle. Police pulled the van over on Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard, around 8.30pm, after being alerted to the fact it was unregistered. Coronavirus: GPS left in the dark By Goya Dmytryshchak A leading doctor says GPs are not equipped to deal with a potential outbreak of coronavirus and is calling for “sentinel practices” to be established. It comes as Australia last week had its first death among confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 60 countries impacted and a new travel ban imposed on foreign nationals travelling from Iran to Australia. Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal said aside from some masks from the federal government, doctors had received little support for dealing with patients presenting with symptoms of the disease. “We’re not going to face the bullet without a bulletproof vest,” said the former Australian Medical Association president and World Medical Association council chair. “We feel quite unsupported in general practice land. “Everybody is telling us to receive patients, screen patients … and so on, but there’s been precious-little support. “No advice about what to do if we received a case and about cleaning the practice up after the case has been through – and you’ve got to keep the room empty – and a lack of understanding that if you shut down a couple of rooms you can decimate a practice. “I’d probably end up sending people to casualty rather than keeping them in your practice because you couldn’t afford not to run your practice.” A worker at a major Melbourne hospital said a lot of GPs did not want to take in suspected coronavirus patients and told patients to go to the emergency department, while the hospital was directing people to call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398.
Dr Haikerwal said clear messaging and material support for doctors was needed. “We want more concerted action so that we are not just saying nice things but actually are prepared if the worst does happen,” he said. “We need to be actively working through the scenario that this is upon us. “It may mean that certain practices are set up as what we call ‘sentinel practices’, that are geared up and prepared with gear and people and training so that they can take the load off the rest of the practices. “Even in hospitals, you wouldn’t just go to an emergency department in hospital; even in hospitals there needs to be sentinel areas like that.”

West rejects toxic soil By Esther Lauaki Two councils have joined Wyndham in shunning a state government proposal to dump toxic soil from the West Gate Tunnel project in the west. Hundreds of Wyndham residents rallied on Watton Street last week to deliver a message that the soil was “not welcome in Wyndham�. The rally, which also included a tractor convoy down Werribee’s main strip, came amid widespread speculation about where the state government intends to dispose of the contaminated soil. Wyndham, Melton and Brimbank councils have all publicly rejected any state government plans to store millions of tonnes of PFAS-laced soil from the tunnel project at proposed sites in Wyndham Vale, Bacchus Marsh or Ravenhall. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said at the rally that toxic soil would not be trucked into the municipality: “Not now, not ever�. “When we saw this insulting situation where we may be left to deal with this soil, we made it clear as a council that it’s definitely not going to happen,� Cr Gilligan said. Community organiser Lisa Heinrichs told Star Weekly that residents want Transurban to take the proposal off the table. “We want them to say that they will take [the contaminated soil] to a permanent fit-for-purpose facility. We don’t want to have it sitting in suburbs, around schools and childcare centres.� Ms Heinrichs said Wyndham activists were keeping watch for any activity at the Hobbs Road rail yard site where the group plans to establish a blockade in coming weeks. Meanwhile, Moorabool residents turned out in force at a rally in Bacchus Marsh on Tuesday
against a bid by Maddingley Brown Coal to receive the soil. At the town’s recent community meeting, attended by about 400 residents, Moorabool council expressed concerns over the tender which is with Transurban.
In a joint letter, Melton and Brimbank councils have sought a commitment from the state government and West Gate Tunnel contractors to seek other locations, and alternative waste treatment options, away from
Melbourne’s west. A site in Bulla is also understood to be under consideration, with Hume council last week calling for urgent clarification from the state government.

Rooming house outcry By Alesha Capone Homelessness organisations and industry workers have slammed “unsafe and illegal rooming houses” operating across Melbourne’s west. Tenants Victoria rooming house outreach worker Catherine Dyer said there are “known operators who are making money by exploiting people at risk of homelessness”. “I’ve been in places that are so bad you feel sick just walking through the house,” Ms Dyer said. “Holes in walls, exposed wires, broken appliances, filthy shared kitchens and traumatised residents subjected to stand-over tactics and arbitrary eviction.” Rooming houses, which are required to register with local councils, are defined as homes with individual bedrooms and a kitchen and bathroom shared by four or more unrelated people. People who cannot afford a private rental property often live in rooming houses. Ms Dyer said there are serious issues in registered and unregistered private rooming houses throughout Melbourne’s west. Tenants Victoria chief executive Jennifer Beveridge, said the state government and councils “are aware of large numbers of unsafe rooming houses”. “They have been on the radar for nearly two decades now and the situation is actually getting worse,” she said. “We need a new round of action on unsafe and illegal rooming houses, including giving a central agency the monitoring and enforcement powers to shut down and prosecute rogue operators.” The North & West Homelessness Network, which consists of the 50 homelessness agencies

operating in the north and west, is pushing for an industry-wide boycott of unsafe private rooming houses. It says the sector is forced to rely on private rooming houses because of a lack of government funding for safe and secure emergency accommodation. A statement issued by the network said that the state was “experiencing a housing crisis with 82,000 people waiting for public housing”,
along with “an all-time low” in private rental affordability. The Minister for Housing Richard Wynne said: “We understand there are some rooming houses not currently being used by our service providers and we support them in these decisions – made to protect the interests of the vulnerable homeless population. “We’re also improving standards across the rooming house sector.”

Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced the creation of 130 parking spaces on vacant land near Bunnings that is already used as informal parking for the nearby train station. “I know a lot of people used the gravel area behind Werribee Bunnings as a temporary carpark for their train travel,” Mr Pallas said. “So while we’re removing the level crossing at Cherry Street, this area will be transformed to deliver 130 new car parking spaces – with improved safety features like better lighting and CCTV.” The spaces will be delivered as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Fund. Level Crossing Removal Project program director Tony Hedley said with no marked spaces, the actual number of available carparks behind Werribee Bunnings varied on any given day, depending on how users parked. “On top of the benefits of removing three of Werribee’s dangerous and congested level crossings, the carpark upgrades at Cherry Street will make it safer and easier for the Werribee community to find a park and catch the train.” Early planning and design works are underway for new car parking at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. Honouring veterans Werribee veterans will pay respect this week to all who served World War II with the B-24 Liberator aircraft. Werribee B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia will hold an inaugural commemorative service on March 23 at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. The restoration of a B-24 Liberator bomber in Werribee has been a labour of love for volunteers for more than two decades. The rare World War II aircraft, said to be the only one left in the Southern hemisphere, is at the heart of the B-24 Liberator Memorial Restoration Fund museum. Group president Lyn Gorman said the commemorative service would be held annually in March. “The B-24 Liberator restoration
association is delighted this commemorative service is to be held as it assists in achieving one of the aims of the group’s founders, namely, to honour all those who served with Liberators,” Ms Gorman said. The association has invited veterans and their families and others who wish to participate in the service to attend at the Shrine of Remembrance on Monday, March 23 at 11am. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath should arrive by 10.30am to register. “Our flag will be raised in honour of the Liberator Squadrons’ service personnel,” Ms Gorman said. “This is considered a high honour and the culmination of our combined effort that commenced in 1988.” Esther Lauaki

Grads join Mercy Health Seventy-eight people have joined this year’s Mercy Health Graduate Program to become a registered nurse, midwife or mental health nurse. Mercy Health Graduate Program lead Janine Kinston said the program would involve a year-long journey for the participants, 38 of whom will be based at Werribee Mercy Hospital during the next 12 months. “They will learn from a team of educators and put into practice their skills alongside senior clinicians across a number of nursing and midwifery specialties, including emergency, perioperative, medical, surgical, palliative care, rehabilitation, Special Care Nursery, maternity services and mental health,” Ms Kinston said.

- Kristy Short An enrolled nurse of more than 20 years, Hoppers Crossing resident Melissa Channer, will be taking part in the palliative care program. “I’ve worked in aged care nursing for a long time but this graduate program gives me the opportunity to fully commit to this area of work,” Ms Channer said. “People at all stages of life need to be given the utmost care. “There is so much emphasis on sustaining life, but I want to give the very best of care, and of myself, to those at the end of their lives.” Melissa will work at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s dedicated palliative care unit, the Gabrielle Jennings Centre, for six months of the program, while her other six months will be community-based.

Her fellow program student Kristy Short, a mother-of-five, studied a three-year nursing degree ahead of starting the Mercy Health graduate program. Ms Short started university at the same time as her 21-year-old daughter. “I’ve had this lifelong desire to become a nurse, and now is the right time,” she said. “I think that my life experience helped me to get into this program, and as a mother of
five I have a natural instinct to care, so I’m really looking forward to putting everything I’ve learned from life and from my degree into practice. “A nursing degree is like a pre-apprenticeship and a graduate program is like an apprenticeship, so it will be an exciting year of learning on the job from some very experienced clinicians and educators.”
Cash boost for community groups Community groups and not-for-profit organisation across Wyndham have received a funding boost, thanks to Wyndham council. The council has allocated $450,000 from its Annual Community Grants Program to assist the groups and organisations in hosting programs and events. Mayor Josh Gilligan said funding was awarded to 36 different causes across the municipality. “The winning projects focus on events and programs for our young and old, those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and people with disabilities,” Cr Gilligan said. TRY Australia will receive $20,164 for its Youth Mentoring Program, which is aimed at improving disadvantaged young people’s education, health and economic outcomes. The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute will receive $30,000 for a project to survey local stakeholders to understand what the best strategies are for responding to adverse childhood experiences and associated mental health issues in Wyndham. The results will feed into a larger research project. “Community grants are about strengthening and connecting our community and drawing upon existing skills to support the community to make Wyndham an even better place to live,” Cr Gilligan said.

Pageant winner celebrates Point Cook’s Sindu Varathan has been crowned winner of the Ms Australia International Pageant 2020. The event’s national finals were held last month in Sydney. The competition aims to recognise gifted women from across the continent, focusing on their talents, accomplishments, personalities and contributions to society. Ms Varathan described her win as “a surreal moment and very specialâ€?. In the lead-up to the pageant, Ms Varathan raised funds for Save the Children through a project called Spare the Change, which encourages people to donate their change for a day or week to the cause. Manor Lakes residents forced to drive about 20 minutes to the nearest Australia Post office to conduct a range of everyday errands have had enough. Locals have renewed calls for a post shop closer to home. Edwin Jacob, who has lived in the area for three years, said he regularly braves Saturday traffic from Manor Lakes to Watton Street to collect parcels. “I do a lot of online purchasing ‌ I have to sit through the traffic on Saturdays to pick something up.â€? He said on a bad day the trip to Werribee can take 20 minutes. Mr Jacob said he was told by Australia Post in 2017 that an outlet had not been established in the suburb because no franchisee had expressed any interest. He said that he was asked to provide population figures to help Australia Post determine if there would be enough demand for after hours parcel collection lockers. “I use the parcel collection service lockers ‌ and I now resort to sending [orders] to a post office in Melbourne near where I work,â€? Mr Jacob said. “The closest collection lockers to Manor Lakes are in Tarneit and all-in-all it’s not feasible.â€? Another resident said she was told by Australia Post in 2014 that to set up an outlet in the area, they would need to consider its proximity to other post offices, the number of businesses and population growth. Australia Post was contacted for comment. Meanwhile, Manor Lakes Central shopping centre announced last week more than a dozen new retailers – from hair and beauty salons to technology and taxation services.

She is among 100 female photographers whose work features in the Loud and Luminous exhibition, which has a theme of “equality”. “I am shocked and sickened every time I hear of another woman killed,” Canepa said. “This was the motivation behind the Alisa Tanaka-King portrait. “Alisa, created The Bird Girls Project, a visual response to the horrifying number of women killed by acts of violence in Australia each year. “She draws a portrait for each woman killed, to give a voice to those lives lost and bring awareness, change and gender equality. “The violence will never end unless we challenge gender stereotypes, call out toxic masculinity and strive for fundamental cultural change. “This all begins with equality.” Canepa’s work will also feature in a book presented to the National Library of Australia and gallery exhibitions in Sydney in April, Melbourne in August, and Brisbane in November.

Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn has backed calls for a sound barrier to be constructed between the Princes Freeway and nearby houses. Mr Finn addressed Parliament on the issue last month, saying that he had visited a constituent in Alesia Court, Werribee after complaints about noise levels from the freeway. Mr Finn said that residents of the area were subjected to “horrendous noise”. “This noise will worsen when the Duncans Road interchange is completed,” he said. “My constituent explained to me that he sleeps with earplugs and his partner takes sleeping tablets in an attempt to sleep at night. “They keep the television on at dinnertime to drown out the traffic noise. “Leaving windows or doors open to allow a cool breeze is strictly a no-no. “This is an appalling situation that needs urgent attention and action.” Mr Finn called on the Minister for Roads, Jaala Pulford, to commit to building the sound barrier. Star Weekly published a story about the noise from the freeway last month. At the time, a state government spokesperson said: “We’re always working to limit the impacts new and upgraded roads have on communities – so we’ll install new noise walls for the Melbourne-bound exit ramp that forms part of the upgraded Duncans Road interchange.” Alesha Capone

Walking with purpose By Tate Papworth With the memory of her brave husband front of mind, Deer Park woman Nicole Fyfe is putting on her runners and walking with purpose. Ms Fyfe’s husband died from bowel cancer in January after a two-year battle with the disease. His determination and spirit in the face of tremendous adversity inspired Ms Fyfe to continue his legacy. “My husband kept getting really bad stomach pains and reflux, but he was only 37, so doctors kept telling us it was reflux issues,” Ms Fyfe said.

“The pain got so bad that we went to the hospital and they did a full scan … he was in surgery the next day. It was a whirlwind. “He was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, but you wouldn’t have known; he’d be working immediately after his chemo, he’d even go straight from chemo to umpiring our children’s sporting events.” She said not even the worst possible news seemed to stop him. “He stopped chemo when we were told it wasn’t working any more, but near the end he told the nurse he was determined to play one last game of cricket,” Ms Fyfe said. “So he discharged himself from the hospital and was on the park that afternoon.” Now Ms Fyfe is determined to continue that legacy. Throughout March, she will be walking a

total of 50 kilometres to raise money for the Cancer Council. “He was determined to show these doctors that having cancer wasn’t going to stop him from doing anything … I wasn’t an overly
active person before, but he inspired me,” Ms Fyfe said. “I’m walking laps of the oval while my son has football training, walking to pick my daughter up from school … just slowly chipping away at

Boosting women’s sports activity By Alesha Capone Councils in Melbourne’s west have joined together to come up with a five-year plan to increase the number of girls and women involved in sport and active recreation. The plan, which was released in draft form last week, has been developed by Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley and Melbourne councils in collaboration with Women’s Health West and the state government. After being endorsed by Wyndham council last Tuesday, the draft plan
will be released for public consultation. Thirteen focus groups involving 66 women participated in a study to develop the draft plan, including women from multicultural backgrounds, women with a disability, new mothers, workers, women aged over 65 and LGBTQI women. Findings included that it was difficult for women with children to become involved with sport and fitness activities. Women also reported they were concerned about their safety on public transport, especially when waiting at more remote train
stations and bus stops, in order to access sport or recreation. They were also worried about safety when looking to exercise outdoors in the early morning and evening. The draft plan state its strategic priorities would include providing safe and accessible spaces and transport routes to maximise opportunities for women and girls to participate in physical activity. Supporting a mix of free or low-cost programs and activities which are inclusive of women and girls of all ages, cultures and abilities was also on the list of priorities.
The draft plan stated a breakdown of the 12 major sports played in Melbourne’s west showed that, in general, “there are significantly more male than females registered sports participants” in the region. According to the draft, 9.9 per cent (4408 women and girls) of females aged between 4 and 99 years of age in Hobsons Bay are involved in sport. Just 6.4 per cent of females living in Wyndham (6751 women and girls) are involved in sport, compared with 6.2 per cent (2504) in Maribyrnong, 5.7 per cent in Melton (3803) and 4.2 per cent in Brimbank (3916).
Bowl into cricket Youngsters interested in cricket can join a Junior Indoor Cricket program run by Hoppers Indoor Sportz. Owner of the Hoppers Crossing centre, John Almond, said the program would have under-11, under-13 and under-15 teams for boys, and girls 13s and 16s teams. “Indoor cricket is a great game for girls and boys to play, helping them with their fielding, batting and bowling,” Mr Almond said. He said that although girls had previously competed in the Junior Indoor Cricket program, this year would be the first time the centre included a program especially for girls. “In conjunction with Western Region Junior Cricket Association, plus Cricket Victoria, we believe there is a product for a sustainable competition in the winter – with the World T20 World Cup running it is a perfect time to launch our program,” he said. Mr Almond said young people enjoyed
indoor cricket because it gave them a chance to play the sport for 12 months a year. “The kids also love the fast-paced, action-packed game, also, playing cricket all year round keeps them fit,” he said. “The program is ideal for the parents as well, as there is no training, plus the parents just turn up and watch the kids play cricket as we provide the umpires, scorers and equipment plus some fresh fruit.” The Junior Indoor Cricket registration day will be April 5, with the competition to run April 14 to June 27. Tours go behind the scenes Melbourne Water will give visitors a look behind the scenes at the Western Treatment Plant during Melbourne Design Week. The water authority will run two free tours of the plant on Wednesday, March 18 at 10am and noon. The two-hour tours will cover aspects of how the plant operates and treats sewage – in the past, present, and its plans for the future – as well as giving people the opportunity to visit its world-renowned wetlands, which are well-known as a habitat for birds from across the globe.
Melbourne Water community education and capacity building team leader Mary Catus-Wood said the plant was a place of historical, cultural and environmental significance. “You won’t be disappointed by this unique opportunity to visit the Western Treatment Plant,” she said. “The size of Phillip Island, the Western Treatment Plant is full of surprises – from clever use of captured methane to serving as the home to growling grass frogs and hundreds of species of bird life.”
Melbourne Water is also partnering with Open House Melbourne to host a tour at Williams Landing, highlighting the first section of the Greening The Pipeline project. The initiative is transforming the heritage-listed Main Outfall Sewer pipeline, along the Federation Trail bike path, into a parkland to service the growing population in Melbourne’s west. Dami’s digital success At just 20 years old, Dami Okedara has established a successful digital marketing business. The young entrepreneur started Clientele Boosters during June last year, when he was 19. Clientele Boosters helps businesses attract more clients, by assisting them with their social media market and customer relations. Mr Okedara said that participating in The Plug Project 2019 – an initiative of the not-for-profit Kulture Hive, founded by Point Cook community advocate Eli Muse – provided him with ideas to get his business off the ground. He said that when he started Clientele Boosters, he would visit companies and make up to 100 cold calls per day, in an effort to drum up business. His customers now include businesses in the restaurant, boutique clothing, real estate and swimming industries.
He has also hired his 16-year-old brother as an employee, and hopes to hire three to five more staff this year. “One of the reasons I love entrepreneurship is that you’re forced to grow every day and every week – not just with clients, but on a personal level, just to stay afloat,” Mr Okedara said. He said running his own business meant that he had control over his own finances and working hours, which allowed him to also devote time to his family, basketball and gym. Mr Okedara, who plays for the Altona Gators, said his ambition was to become a professional basketball player within the next two years. He is also studying commerce and law at Deakin University. Youth bring new focus to issues By Esther Lauaki Wyndham’s young people are being invited to share their thoughts on the big issues at the upcoming Youth Forum 2020. This month’s youth forum in Hoppers Crossing will allow students to have their say on what is important to them – including everything from body image to climate change. Their feedback will be used to shape youth services to better suit the needs of Wyndham’s younger generations. Mayor Josh Gilligan said it was important to listen to the city’s young people and what they would need to live a more fulfilling life in Wyndham.

“We would like to hear the views of young people aged 12 to 25 who live, work, study, or spend leisure time in Wyndham, to take part Youth Forum 2020,” Cr Gilligan said. “We want to hear about what local, national and global issues are important to you. “Topics we will be seeking feedback on the day include climate change, how to cope with stress and mental health issues, body image concerns, school and study problems and the
impact of social media, just to name a few. “The information you share on the day will be used by Wyndham council and other youth services to demonstrate how we can all provide better and more appropriate services for young people. “Young people will be using these services, so it is vital they help shape what they offer to them.” Parents under the age of 25 are also encouraged to attend the forum and bring their children along. Taking on the challenge Golfers from across the west will swing into action in support of children with cancer. More than 100 players and spectators are expected at the Werribee Mazda Challenge Golf Day, which marks its 10th anniversary on Friday (March 13), at Kooringal Golf Club in Altona to raise funds for the Challenge charity. Event organisers Tony and Helen Barr first became involved with Challenge in 1996 when their nephew Nick was diagnosed with cancer. “Challenge helps to lighten the cancer journey for the whole family by providing practical support and enjoyable experiences 365 days of the year, both in and out of hospital,” Mr Barr said. “Funds from this event go directly to support families who live in the western suburbs of Melbourne.”
Challenge chief executive David Rogers said people of all ages and golfing abilities are welcome to enjoy this event, which always guarantees a fantastic day. “What Tony and Helen have been able to achieve over the last 10 years is truly remarkable and a testament to their determined spirits.” Esther Lauaki

MY WYNDHAM Sue Tantaro is determined to spread the word about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which affects one in 3500 boys – including three of her grandsons. She talks to Esther Lauaki about her mission of love. my bachelor degree in community and social environments. I was also the volunteer president of the Children’s Week Picnic for five years,. I have been involved in Hoppers Crossing netball and was a coach for over six years and, might I say, and won five grand finals.
What’s your connection to Wyndham? My connection over many years is living and learning in the City of Wyndham. I could not imagine ever living anywhere else as I have built up networks and friendships that I would not change for the world. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Wyndham for over 35 years and have been visiting since 1980 when my sister moved here.
What’s the quirkiest thing about you? This question was hard to answer … my colleagues said my ability to smile even when my heart is breaking and I am crying inside.
What are you passionate about? I am passionate about diversity and giving all people equal opportunities to build a better future for them in the community. I am also passionate about helping people reach their full potential by assisting in career development and giving them the tools to reach their goals as I work in the community sector. You are a passionate advocate for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Tell us briefly what it is. DMD is a disorder that affects about one in every 3500 boys, and is the most common muscular dystrophy in children. It is a genetic condition, which means it is passed from parent to child through genetic information. But it can also occur spontaneously … I have three grandsons with DMD and no history of DMD in my family. My family has been on this journey for over five years and struggles every day to keep everything together. The boys are exceptional and are learning to deal with this terrible disease and the changes that continue due to decrease in their muscle strength. What are you doing to raise awareness at the
What do you love about Wyndham? I love the diverse community and all the attractions Wyndham has to offer, such as the Werribee Zoo, the Mansion, free summer entertainment in the parks and many, many more. I have seen so many changes over the past 35 years. I remember when there was no Plaza, no movie theatre, not many schools and a country hospital. moment? I am participating in the Melbourne walk for Save our Sons, which is a not-for-profit organisation for the Duchenne community. As part of The Walk 4 Duchenne, a group of sponsored walkers will be embarking on a 186-kilometre journey over nine days (which started February 28), visiting 10 schools that have a student affected by Duchenne. My leg of the walk started this week from Derrimut Heath Primary School. We hope to raise as much money as possible and, even more importantly, raise awareness of the crippling disease. Two of
my three grandsons are currently in a clinical trial which we hope will stabilise their disease until a cure is found. We hope that by providing these much-needed funds to the research community, we may one day find a cure for all those living with Duchenne dystrophy. What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? Over the past 30 years, I have worked in the community and educational areas. I have volunteered for a number of local neighbourhood houses, while studying for
What would you like to see improved? I believe the roads and infrastructure are a major problem. I know the council and state and federal governments, are working to address many of these issues. From a very personal perspective, I would like to see a school built in the area that caters for special needs children that do not require an IQ test to be enrolled. Many children have a physical disability and cannot attend a special school as their IQ is too high so they must attend a mainstream school. Many of these schools are not equipped or understand the requirements for children with specific physical disabilities. .

SPORT Semi final agony as Point Cook’s season ends It was not supposed to end this way for Point Cook. The Warriors had been so good all season in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3, but they could not get going in the semi final. A heartbreaking one-wicket loss to Williamstown Imperials at Saltwater Reserve over the weekend will haunt the Warriors all off-season. Point Cook had the worst of the conditions to bat. The Warriors were not immune to the low scores that plagued batting teams on Saturday following a wet lead-in that affected pitch conditions. A Warriors side with the most potent batting line up in the competition was kept to just 93. It was a snail’s paced batting effort too, going at 1.82 runs per over in the 51 overs they batted. The Warriors could never get out of first gear. From the outset, it was ugly for Point Cook. At 4-14, the outlook was bleak.
Wicketkeeper-batsman James Peterson (16) and middle order man Brett Talbot (10) tried to find a spark for the Warriors, but they could not go on with it. When Warriors playing coach Aaron Whear (18) and Owen Doolan (23 not out) entered the crease at 8-43, their side needed a miracle. A 34-run ninth wicket stand offered slight hope. When Whear was dismissed, Doolan kept up the fight with No. 11 Wade Kirkwood (eight), producing a 20-run partnership. The Warriors’ score of 93 looked well off the mark, but with the benefit of hindsight, it was so close to being a match-winning total. Even with a small total to defend, Point Cook never threw in the towel. The Warriors scrapped it out all the way to make a serious game of it. Gurbaksh Khaira was extraordinary with the ball for Point Cook, taking 5-33 off 26.3 overs.
Owen Doolan was nigh on unplayable with 2-2 off nine overs, while Harvinder Singh snared 2-30 off 17. A near faultless display from the Point Cook bowlers – free of wides and no balls – was still not enough when defending a tiny total. It took Williamstown Imperials until the last pair standing, but they got it done and ended Point Cook’s season in the process. In CV Women’s Community Cricket, Hoppers Crossing bowed out of the north west B one day finals after a 95-run semi final loss to Melton Centrals at Blackwood Drive Reserve. The Cats were undisciplined with the ball, producing 46 extras, including 14 no balls and 24 wides as Centrals coasted to 5-161 off 34 overs. It is not all bad for the Giants, who had already secured automatic promotion to the top flight after finishing the season on top of the ladder, but not going up as champions will sting nevertheless. After taking game one 3-2 in a nail-biter, Werribee lost the last two games by two runs each, failing to score in a 2-0 game two loss and pipped 12-10 in a batter-dominated game three.

Wyndham Devils will begin their title defence in the Big V basketball women’s state championship on the road this Saturday night. The Devils will tip off their 2020 season away to Whittlesea Pacers at the Mill Park Basketball Stadium before returning home to raise last season’s championship banner against Sunbury Jets in round two on March 22. United soars into six By Lance Jenkinson The complexion of Western United’s inaugural A-League season has changed for the better all of a sudden. Scoring 11 goals in two weeks will do that for you, with massive back-to-back wins elevating United back into the top six. United coach Mark Rudan heard all the detractors following a loss to Wellington Phoenix three weeks ago, but kept his faith in the playing group and trusted that they would come through better for experiencing a rough patch in the season. Thumping wins to open March, a 6-2 home thrashing of Central Coast Mariners on the first day of the month, followed by a 5-1 hammering of Adelaide United away on Saturday night, has turned United’s season around. Suddenly, confidence has lifted for United and finals is back on the agenda. “I’m happy because the players executed the
game plan to perfection,” Rudan said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence and belief in this group.” Besart Berisha kick-started the five-goal dream for Western United in the city of churches. In the 18th minute, the veteran striker was the beneficiary of a spectacular team build up, which started with a diagonal ball from Alessandro Diamanti that connected with Josh Risdon in stride, who, in turn, squared it to Berisha for a neat finish. Seven minutes later, Adelaide United was on level terms, when Riley McGree fired past United substitute goalkeeper Ryan Scott, who came on for a concussed Filip Kurto. It was a crossroads moment in the match for Western United. Would United continue to take the game on or sit back and try to preserve the point? Rudan was pleased with his side’s response. “We’ve been working on our mindset and
making sure we turn on and switch on again [after conceding a goal], that it’s not the end of the world and we continue playing positive football,” he said. “They flicked that switch, they stayed positive.” Western United scored two goals in six minutes before half time to wrestle back control. Diamanti found himself in space in the 32nd minute after he was put in by a Max Burgess through ball and tucked home from close range. Burgess, a hat-trick hero last week, found the back of the net himself in the 38th minute, scoring with a header. United put the game well out of reach of the hosts in the second half with goals to winger Connor Pain, three minutes after the resumption of play, and a second to Berisha, in the 56th minute. Berisha’s goal was assisted by Risdon, who had three assists for the game.

Positive Tigers turn up the heat By Lance Jenkinson The power of positivity was at the fore for Werribee on the opening weekend of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals. The Tigers kept their mindset in the present to record a thumping eight-wicket win over Altona in a one-sided qualifying final at JK Grant Reserve. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien insists his side was not dogged by past finals failures and there was no added pressure to perform as a result. In their past two qualifying finals, the Tigers have desperately underperformed, bowled out for just 55 in a 109-run loss to Balwyn in 2016-17 and bowled out for 103 in a five-wicket loss to Melton last season. “We didn’t feel the pressure,� O’Brien said. “We just went about our business. “We’ve always had confidence in our cricket. “It probably wasn’t even in our mind what’s happened previously. “We know we’re a good two-day side and we had a good record against Altona, so we went in fully confident.� It is onwards and upwards for Werribee now the qualifying final monkey is off the back. The Tigers were dominant from start to finish, taking advantage of bowler-friendly conditions on day one and then leaving nothing to chance with a strong run chase. O’Brien said the chance to bowl first, routing Altona for just 121, played a part in settling the qualifying final nerves for his team. “It was a good toss to win with the rain there,� he said. “When you bowl first, the bowlers just do their work, so there’s a little bit of pressure taken off with bowling first.

Blockbuster start to WRFL season Werribee Districts will take centre stage when the Western Region Football League launches its 2020 season. The Tigers will face off with Spotswood in a blockbuster division 1 season opener under lights at Downer Oval in Williamstown on April 3. The rest of the opening round games will take place a day later. Tigers coach Chris Gilham is thrilled that his club will get the chance to feature in the showpiece event. “It’s a good opportunity to showcase our footy club and the league in a standalone game,” he said. “We’re rapt that we’ve got the opportunity to play it, especially against Spotty, who are a big club. “It’s a very important night for us, so we’re looking forward to it.” If recent matches between the two sides are an indication, the season opener should be a humdinger between Werribee Districts and Spotswood. In the finals last year, Spotswood was victorious by four points, despite having six less scoring shots. Werribee Districts won both of the home-and-away meetings by a kick or less. With both teams tipped to be in the mix for the finals, it will be a crucial game for both teams to lay down a marker for the season ahead. “They’ve been pretty tight encounters every time we’ve played them lately, so it should be a pretty good game,” Gilham said. “They knocked us out of the finals last year by a couple of points and we had three games against them and they were all decided by under a goal.”
In the Saturday games, Deer Park will take on growing rivals Caroline Springs at John McLeod Oval, Point Cook will test newly promoted Yarraville-Seddon at Saltwater Reserve, Hoppers Crossing will entertain Sunshine Kangaroos at Hogans Road Reserve and Altona will host St Albans in a twilight fixture at JK Grant Reserve. Werribee Districts have not been too active in the player transfer market. First and foremost, the Tigers want to encourage home grown players to take up important roles in the senior team. With such a strong junior base, the Tigers need to keep their pathways relatively clear for their own move up the ranks and avoid having to seek opportunities elsewhere. “The first port of call is to just try and retain your list,” Gilham said. “We haven’t been overly active in terms of recruiting, we just want to make sure that our juniors have got plenty of opportunities. “We want to create a pathway for our kids, so it will be a very young team for us this year. “We’ll make sure the good kids in the 18 to 23 age block get some good opportunities.” Sean Gregory is the headline recruit for Werribee Districts. A key defender, Gregory spent time on Essendon’s AFL list and arrives via VFL club Williamstown. Lucas Rocci has also committed to play with Werribee Districts when he is not required at VFL level with Werribee. Meanwhile, the WRFL has launched a new thirds competition. Albanvale, Altona, Braybrook, Caroline Springs, Point Cook and Wyndham Suns will take part in the inaugural season, which will run for 10 rounds and be a 16-a-side (18 permitted on the ground if agreed by both teams) format that will start the week after Easter.
