Toxic site fight begins By Esther Lauaki Residents are again preparing to go to war with the state government – this time to keep a Wyndham Vale railyard from becoming a toxic waste dump. The government is considering dumping toxic soil from the West Gate Tunnel project at the newly constructed rail stabling yard at Hobbs Road, Wyndham Vale. The state-owned 82-hectare site, which backs onto the heritage-protected Werribee River, is just 70 metres from houses and abuts land where housing developments and four schools are planned. Werribee MP Tim Pallas now faces a bruising fight with his constituents, who have vowed to fight the proposal. Community advocate Joe Garra has labelled the proposal “a disgusting, disrespectful idea” from the state government. “If Tim Pallas isn’t prepared to stick up for the residents who voted for him, he should retire from politics tomorrow,” Dr Garra said. Wyndham Vale resident James Hohepa-Smith, who lives five minutes walk from the railyard, said he was “up-in-arms”. “Politicians aren’t thinking about our future,” Mr Hohepa-Smith said. “Quick solutions are not good for us.” Government officials met with Wyndham council staff last Tuesday and revealed a proposal to use the site to temporarily dump some of the Transurban project’s soil, which is laced with PFAS – chemicals associated with fire retardents and industrial products. Mr Pallas, speaking on 3AW on Friday, said that the site was a back-up option and would only be used as a “short-term solution”. “If it is ever used, and it may not ever be used … [the soil] is dropped and then moved as quickly as possible to a long-term facility within a matter of days at best.” The Wyndham Vale site is among a series of government-owned sites being considered to dump the West Gate Tunnel soil with sites in Footscray, Bacchus Marsh and Avalon also understood to be on the list. An urgent community meeting has been called for Wednesday night for Werribee residents who say the area continually bears the brunt of the government’s unpopular decisions. The latest proposal comes more than 20 years after thousands of Wyndham residents led a three-year campaign which resulted in the state government scrapping plans for a toxic dump and waste management precinct for the quarry next door to the Wests Road tip. construction of a new youth detention centre in Werribee South. The state government eventually chose a new site at Cherry Creek, close to the Werribee tip. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan is seeking urgent information about the latest waste proposal.

“This is state government land and there is an obligation by the government not to palm it off to the private sector to deal with,” Cr Gilligan said. “We’re interested in an outcome that takes into account the interests of our local residents, who are outraged.

“Wyndham council works hard to build a livable city … and our residents are asking: Why is it that we will cop this toxic soil in our city?” If the proposal goes ahead the dumping site would need to be rezoned and receive the Environment Protection Authority’s approval.

Probe into ‘sickening’ cruelty By Esther Lauaki The RSPCA is calling on the public for information about an animal cruelty case in Manor Lakes involving two kittens. RSPCA inspector Sarah Gilbert said the two black and white kittens were discovered along Bush Street on February 5 – one with its ear sliced off and badly broken bones. Both kittens also had severe feline parvovirus. “Both animals were taken to a local veterinarian where they were receiving treatment,” Ms Gilbert said.

- Rebecca Roberts “It is believed that the perpetrator deliberately bound and soaked [one of ] the cats to cause it distress.” Despite efforts of cat rescue volunteers Rebecca Roberts and her team, who had been fostering the animals, one kitten died last week and the other continues to fight for life.

Ms Roberts said she was “completely heartbroken” by the case. “She fought hard but Parvo is a hideous disease and it was just too much for her little body,” she said. “Her brother is still fighting. “I cannot even express how much my heart breaks for these kittens. “In all my years in rescue, after everything I’ve seen and heard, I feel sick and completely devastated. “Not only did this beautiful little girl have to endure this disgusting act of cruelty we also couldn’t save her.”

“All of this could have been avoided. “I couldn’t even begin to try and understand the kind of person that would do this.” Ms Roberts said there is “no excuse to mistreat animals” and she encouraged pet owners to desex their cats. Rescue officers are canvassing the area where the kittens were found and appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity along Bush Street on February 4, 5 or 6 to come forward. Cherry Street bridge works begin Early works have started on a road bridge being constructed across the Werribee train line, as part of the Cherry Street level crossing removal. The bridge is being built between Tarneit Road and the Princes Highway. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan visited Cherry Street last Thursday to inspect the project. While at the worksite, they announced a $113.8 million contract to build the bridge, a new pedestrian underpass and a shared-use path on the south side of the rail line. The project will be delivered by the alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald and Metro Trains Melbourne. Mr Pallas said the new road bridge, due for completion in 2022, would slash travel times for drivers. Ms Allan said the Cherry Street level crossing could cause delays of up to 38 minutes in the two hour morning peak period – removing the boom gates would mean “less frustration” for drivers. A gravel area beside the railway line near Bunnings will be transformed into a carpark with 130 spaces, better lighting and CCTV. Early work has also begun on the Duncans Road Interchange to reduce congestion for the 11,000 motorists who travel through the spot every day and resurfacing works are underway on sections of Kororoit Creek Road in Altona and Ferguson Street in Williamstown. Baby boom continues Wyndham’s baby boom is continuing, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Data released by the ABS shows Wyndham recorded the second-highest number of babies born across the state in 2018. There were 4878 babies born in Wyndham in a 12 month period in 2018, up from 4821 babies born in the municipality during 2017. In 2018, the municipality of Casey in Melbourne’s southeast topped the state for the number of births, with 5247 babies born (compared to 5416 in 2017). Werribee Mercy Hospital’s director of maternity services, Dr Jacqueline Van Dam, said the hospital delivered about 4000 babies each year. Dr Van Dam said the hospital has nine birthing suites and 32 post-natal rooms. “We have reached a point where the need for services is outweighing our physical capacity,” she said. “Our facilities are always full and our staff constantly busy. “In order to fully service the fastest growing community in Victoria, we will need to eventually expand our maternity services and infrastructure.” Mercy Health said it has “regular dialogue” with both Health Minister Jenny Mikakos and Werribee MP Tim Pallas, as well as other local members of parliament, about the future needs of the 26-year-old Werribee hospital.

Boost for growing suburbs Wyndham council has been given $6.5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund to put towards three major projects. The Growing Suburbs Fund – a state government initiative – provides money for infrastructure in some of Melbourne’s fastest-growing outer municipalities. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said he was delighted the council has received $3 million from the fund’s 2019-20 allocation, to put towards the $26.2 million Truganina South East Community Precinct Masterplan. “The precinct will have an integrated family

centre, where families can access kindergarten and maternal and child health services, plus sport and recreation facilities, a sports pavilion and a large reserve where the community can meet for exercise, play dates and picnics,” Cr Gilligan said. “The community of Truganina is expanding rapidly and that’s why this

investment will see local services for local people, right here at home in Truganina.” Cr Gilligan said Wyndham also received $2 million to help start construction at Tarneit’s Riverdale Multipurpose Community Centre, as part of a $9.1 million project. “This centre will provide Tarneit with access to early education and care services … a gathering space for the community, and programs to suit all ages,” he said. “We were also thrilled to see the Victorian Government awarded us with $1.5 million towards our K Road Cliffs Masterplan, which

is half the funding needed to carry out works.” The council last year approved a masterplan for the cliffs, after investigations found erosion at the site “needs to be rectified as a matter of priority to preserve the cliffs and ensure the safety of visitors”. “This iconic spot will be beautified and conserved it for future generations to enjoy,” Cr Gilligan said. “I would like to thank the state government for seeing the importance of our major infrastructure projects and investing in the future of our community here at Wyndham.”

Barefoot Cinema is making its way west, and will make its debut at Werribee Park this week. The outdoor cinema program will screen films at the Victorian State Rose Garden from today (February 19) to March 4. Equestrian centre riding high By Esther Lauaki Four major equestrian events are coming to Werribee. Werribee Park Equestrian Centre will host Dressage and Jumping with the Stars; the Melbourne International Three Day Event; the Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships and the Australian Interschools Equestrian Championships between 2020 and 2021, following a funding announcement by Equestrian Victoria.

Werribee Park Equestrian Centre chair Suzie Batten said she was pleased to welcome more premier events to the area. “Larger events attract competitors and spectators from interstate and overseas,” Ms Batten said. “There are several weekends a year that all accommodation is booked out in Werribee and Point Cook as a result of events at Werribee. Those people are also eating out and accessing services in the Wyndham area.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said Dressage and Jumping with the Stars is one of Australia’s

premier multi-discipline equestrian events with competition classes for young horses across three international and Olympic disciplines. “Sport is such an important part of our community and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to attract these exciting events to Werribee,” Mr Pallas said. “This is great news for fans and also for local workers and businesses. “It means we can showcase our region to a wide audience.”

Held over three days, the event attracts more than 400 participants, 100 coaches, support staff and officials, and more than 3500 spectators. Dressage and Jumping with the Stars will be on March 19 to 21. The Melbourne International Three Day Event will follow in June, the Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships in December and the 2021 Australian Interschools Equestrian Championships will make its way to Werribee next year.

Back to Little River An iconic Australian rockstar will return to where it all began next month, as part of a fundraising event to be held in aid of Little River Primary School. Little River Band lead singer Glenn Shorrock will perform alongside Wendy Matthews in a free concert to be staged at the Little River Country Fair. Wyndham council is sponsoring the return of Shorrock to Little River, which inspired the name of his band during the 1970s. Shorrock said that while driving to one of their first gigs, the band saw the name of the town on a road sign. “I said it sounds like a song, and a good name for a band,” he said. The Little River Band became famous in Australia and the USA in the 1970s, selling more than 30 million records. Ten of their singles reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, with Reminiscing peaking at number three.

In 1976, the band filmed a video at the Little River railway station. This year also marks the 45th anniversary of Shorrock’s first performance under the name Little River Band. Shorrock said he was excited about performing at the upcoming Little River Primary School fair, which raises funds to purchase resources and equipment for the school’s 150 pupils. “I look forward to saying hello to the town that inspired the name of the band and we put Little River on the map as well,” Shorrock said. The Little River Country Fair will be held on Friday, March 20 from 4-9pm at the Little River Primary School, 21 Flinders Street, Little River. Helping dogs heal By Alesha Capone Werribee’s Jayde Weil says that helping dogs affected by the recent Victorian bushfires was an emotional but rewarding experience. Miss Weil, an Aussie Pooch Mobile franchisee, and her partner Jayden last month helped families in Wodonga who had left their homes and were living at Australian Defence Force barracks. Across a weekend, Miss Weil bathed ash-covered dogs who had been evacuated alongside their families. She said one Shitsu, who was covered in grey ash, emerged from the bath pure white, prompting the owner to burst into tears. “It was an awesome experience to be able to learn people’s stories, people were so thankful and so grateful, even though I wasn’t really doing that much,” Miss Weil said. Miss Weil said the smoke from the bushfires became so thick that a times she struggled to breathe. And while she was washing dogs, planes flew overhead to drop red-coloured fire retardant and army helicopters, planes and trucks travelled by. “It was like something out of the end of the world,” Miss Weil said. “It was very intense and very scary.” Miss Weil travelled to Wodonga as part of a campaign by Aussie Pooch Mobile which offered to pay accommodation and fuel to franchisees who could volunteer their time to help dog owners affected by the fires. Miss Weil also took a bag of dog collars, bandanas and leads, donated by her aunt Simmon.

Drivers heed disabled parking The number of motorists fined for parking in disabled carparks in Wyndham has almost halved over two years. According to Wyndham council, 714 infringements were issued to motorists for parking without a valid disability permit in 2018. That number dropped to 475 in 2019. Wyndham council’s director, city operations Stephen Thorpe said the council allocated car spaces for people who have disabilities so they could park with greater ease. “Most residents understand why these spaces must be reserved for those with disabilities and in the past year, we were proud to see a decline in infringements for people parking in these spots illegally,” he said. A doctor must confirm that an applicant for a disability parking permit has a significant ambulatory disability and cannot access a vehicle in an ordinary parking bay, or that the applicant needs to use a complex walking aid (an aid which has more than one contact point with the ground) that prevents them accessing a vehicle in an ordinary parking bay. A place to call home By Alesha Capone A refuge is being built in Werribee to help young people experiencing homelessness. Construction of Melbourne City Mission’s (MCM) Youth Accommodation Support Service in Wyndham Street is expected to be completed by the end of the year. MCM chief executive Vicki Sutton said the organisation was relocating its “very dilapidated” youth accommodation service in Maribyrnong to Werribee. The new centre will provide accommodation and support for up to 10 young people aged between 15 and 25, along with counselling, health and legal services, education and pet, music and art therapy. The centre will have two family rooms, for homeless young adults who have children. The state government has contributed $3.35 million towards the new centre, with the rest of the project’s funding coming from philanthropy, a bequest from the late Trevor Bradley and money raised through MCM’s annual fundraising event, Sleep at the ‘G. More than $465,000 in services have been donated free-of-charge to the project, by members of The Property Industry Foundation. Ms Sutton said that traditionally, programs for homeless youth were based in the city and inner suburbs, but the need for assistance had grown in Wyndham as its population boomed. “This refuge will give young people from the west the opportunity to remain connected with their community during this distressing time while being able to access MCM’s programs, including housing support and therapeutic and mental health programs,” she said. During 2016, on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ census night, 730 people were identified as homeless in Wyndham – of those,

384 were aged between 12 and 24 years old. Werribee MP Tim Pallas attended last week’s official sod-turning of the Youth Accommodation Support Service. “Today marks a significant chapter in our efforts to end homelessness in Melbourne’s west,” he said. Twenty-two year-old Tameika, who has experienced homelessness, told those at the sod-turning said that if youths experiencing homelessness remained connected to their local areas – such as school and friends – this could have a positive affect on their mental health. “That is a massive thing that can help a lot of people in trauma,” she said.

Time to tuck into Friar Place The $400,000 upgrade of Friar Place Park in Point Cook is now complete. It sports a new playground, half-court basketball court, additional trees, seating, a nature-play area and a new circuit path. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said council was delivering on its significant capital works program to enhance the quality of life for Point Cook’s 65,000 residents. “This financial year alone, council is upgrading eight parks, improving nine roads, enhancing a skate park and delivering a new outdoor youth space in Point Cook, with further investment in the pipeline,” Cr Gilligan said. “These major infrastructure projects will substantially boost Point Cook’s liveability.” Family Friendly City portfolio holder Mia Shaw said the upgraded park would be a terrific place for residents to unwind after work, exercise and play with their children. “The upgrades have resulted in the park being a more vibrant place for community members to spend time in,” Cr Shaw said. “There are nature-play areas for children to explore, a new circuit path for people to get up their steps and additional trees to provide shade for picnic-goers. “It is somewhere Point Cook residents of all ages … will enjoy spending time in, without having to get in the car.” The project was jointly funded by council and the state government. An organisation working to unite Nepali people residing in Australia has launched a photo competition. Tarneit man Arun Chitraker, the creative director of Sathi Australia, said the competition was open to people of Nepalese origin, and Nepalese people, who are living in Australia. Mr Chitraker, a photographer himself, said the competition aimed to give people a chance to showcase their creativity. He said another aim of the competition was to celebrate Vision Nepal 2020, a campaign run by the Nepalese government to attract more tourists to the country. Haze link to heart health By Goya Dmytryshchak Bushfire smoke haze may increase the number of cardiac arrests and other heart problems across Victoria and further afield, according to new research. Williamstown’s Anjali Haikerwal, whose doctorate examined health impacts of the 2006-07 Victorian bushfires, found that just two days of exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and hospital admissions for cardiovascular problems. Microscopic PM2.5 pollution is about a third the width of a human hair, or smaller than a speck of dust, and is inhaled straight into the lungs and bloodstream. “These particles may act as a trigger factor for acute cardiovascular events; therefore it’s important not to delay seeking medical help if you experience symptoms of heart problems during smoke episodes from bushfires,” Dr Haikerwal said. Using statewide data from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry and Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Haikerwal found a nearly seven per cent increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and about two per cent increase in emergency department visits and hospitalisations for acute cardiac events. People aged 65 and over and men were the most vulnerable. Her findings were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association. She said more research was needed into medium to long-term health impacts of smoke exposure from intense bushfires burning for days and weeks as witnessed recently. “It’s very unprecedented at present –

the smoke haze which has lingered on in Melbourne and neighbouring places and Victoria for days,” Dr Haikerwal said. “In recent weeks, most parts of Australia have been shrouded in bushfire smoke for days with very poor to hazardous air quality

– high levels of small particulate matter PM2.5 – reported in many cities and towns. “And the most important thing is the levels of these harmful particulate matter – they have been in the atmosphere for weeks now and at levels which are very harmful to a human body.”

Suburbs boom with solar When it comes to solar power, Wyndham is booming. Five Wyndham suburbs have been named among the top 10 Melbourne areas for approved solar rebate applications under the state government’s Solar Homes program since July last year Tarneit topped the state with 1866 approved applications, Point Cook placed third (1364), Truganina fifth (1095), Wyndham Vale seventh (893) and Werribee 10th (689). Since July 2019, more than 71,700 successful applications for rebated solar panels, solar batteries and solar hot water systems have been submitted to the program by Victorian households. More than 61,700 solar systems have been installed across the state and $124.6 million in solar rebates have been paid out. Solar Homes Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said community housing residents with solar systems on their roofs received 100 per cent of the power bill savings created by the panels. She said that not-for-profit housing providers received the rebate and passed the bill savings onto their tenants. “Solar Homes is saving families hundreds of dollars on their energy bills – which is great for all Victorians, helping with the cost of living,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “Through Solar Homes and our ambitious renewable energy targets, we’re creating jobs, boosting energy supply, driving down emissions and slashing energy bills for Victorians.”

Mercy patient numbers soar By Alesha Capone Werribee Mercy Hospital is busier than ever, but is still meeting its key performance targets, new state government data shows. Health and Ambulance Services Minister Jenny Mikakos last week released hospital performance data for the December 2019 quarter. During the three months, Werribee Mercy admitted 10,950 patients â€“ 819 more than for the same period in 2018. Of the patients admitted, 5566 patients were admitted for same-day treatment (up 395

from the December 2018 quarter) and 4346 were admitted by the hospitalâ€™s emergency department, an increase of 588 patients. A total of 12,378 patients were treated at the emergency department in the December quarter. The hospital treated all category one patients (classified as the most urgent medical emergencies, such as life-threatening illnesses), immediately upon their arrival in the emergency department. Werribee Mercy also provided operations to 100 per cent of the category one urgent elective surgery patients within the state governmentâ€™s

benchmark of 30 days, including half of these patients within 12 days â€“ four days faster than the previous quarter. In August 2018, Werribee Mercy Hospital officially opened a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit as part of a $93 million dollar expansion, allowing it to care for more patients from across the west. Werribee Mercy Hospitalâ€™s director of maternity services Dr Jacqueline Van Dam, said that in recent years the hospital had seen a growth in the presentation of multicultural patients, including maternity patients. â€œTo ensure the comfort and safety of our

multicultural patients, we have seen an increase in the use of our interpreter services,â€? she said. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said: â€œVictoriaâ€™s hospitals and ambulance service have seen some great results this quarter despite increasing demand and additional pressureâ€?. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said: â€œOur incredible paramedics, doctors, nurses and other health workers in Wyndham have a tough job to do and theyâ€™re doing it well â€“ giving locals the very best care, close to home.â€? Altona MP Jill Hennessy said that health staff and paramedics worked hard to provide high-quality care as quickly as possible.

Before the colonisation of North America, there were about 30 million wild bison, with their numbers dropping below 1000 by the 1880s. As of this year, there are about 13,000 wild American bison and an additional 68 conservation herds in North America. Werribee Open Range Zoo added six female bison calves last year to contribute to the global breeding program.

A baby bison named Taami is blossoming at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Staff at the zoo, along with mother Tehya and father Benji, welcomed Taami into the world on January 27. Taami is an American bison, a species that was once hunted close to extinction. Her name translates to “musician” in Raramuri, an indigenous language originating from Chihuahuain Mexico, where a population of American bison reside. Explore a council career Secondary students could get the chance to explore a career with Wyndham council. The council is calling on Year 10 students to take part in its Bright Futures Work Experience program. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said offering high school students work experience allowed the next generation of leaders and career-orientated workers to explore the environment of local government. “Students have the option to choose from a wide range of careers here at council,” Cr Gilligan said. “They can spend time helping the kindergarten and youth services teams, see how the town planners work, how the city’s human services department operates and even how we manage waste is our growing city – and that’s just a few of the departments calling on our

young people to take up a five-day placement. “Students will take home a greater knowledge of their area of interest and gain confidence and professional connections after their stint with council.” Last year 108 Year 10 students took part in the Bright Futures Work Experience program. Concern over rail link plans By Esther Lauaki

$11 billion Metro Tunnel. A new track between Tullamarine and Sunshine would be built. Rail experts have said the tunnel option is the only way to relieve pressure on existing western suburbs tracks, and is necessary for an efficient airport train service and fast trains to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan labelled the above ground option a “sh** deal” for Wyndham and Geelong saying it would “starve” the region of reliable rail services. “Wyndham council will oppose any deal that does not address the problem of overcrowded carriages and does not increase the frequency

Wyndham council has strongly opposed plans for an above ground rail link between Tullamarine Airport and Sunshine, claiming it would “starve” the west of reliable rail services. The state and federal governments are reportedly finalising plans for the multibillion-dollar airport rail link, amid concern that plans for a rail tunnel between Sunshine and the airport will be scrapped. This means trains would be wedged on to already congested tracks between the city and Sunshine and would enter the CBD via the new

of rail services for our residents,” Cr Gilligan said. “Our trains are packed to capacity and we need more frequent services to meet the growing city’s demands. “The benefit of a rail link to the airport should not compromise Wyndham’s urgent need for additional rail services. “We need more rail services for the 66 per cent of Wyndham workers who leave the municipality every day for work – and for our students and families who need to travel to the city daily. “We need to end our commuter crush and receive a clear timeline from state

and federal governments as to when we are going to get more train services in the west.” Last year, the Victorian government committed to fund the planning stage of the Western Rail Plan, which would include electrifying the Wyndham Vale line and adding capacity between Sunshine and Melbourne to run extra services for the west. “The state government needs to deliver on that project,” Cr Gilligan said. “Improvements to Wyndham’s train services will solve our urgent transport needs and provide more opportunity for economic growth and improved livability.”

Voice for disabled youth employment. “Everyone wants someone who just has lots of years of experience, but most employers aren’t aware that going an extra step to explain something to someone in a way which they understand can do great quality-wise for both business and employee,” Miss Gligorevic said. “The number of people who are classified as having a disability is on the rise (whether it’s physical, intellectual, sensory or mental) and if we don’t give them a chance, a big amount of our population will suffer.” Miss Gligorevic, who has Asperger Syndrome, said she has seen Mr Jurukovski working and that he succeeded in many of his work tasks. Miss Gligorevic said her dream was to become a travel agent. She is also writing a book about her travels and culture, titled My Balkan Heart. Alesha Capone

Stefan Jurukovski is celebrating becoming a representative for OneWyndham. Mr Jurukovski recently received a OneWyndham award from Wyndham council, which recognises young people who have demonstrated ingenuity and positive accomplishments within the community. Mr Jurukovski is a strong advocate for youths who have autism, like him. He is a participant on the Gateway Recreational Program, has worked in a factory and worked as a barista for three years with Mambourin Enterprises. He also began volunteering for St Vincent de Paul in 2016, and helps categorise DVDs and electronics at the Hoppers Crossing Vinnie’s store. Both Mr Jurukovski and Mirjana Gligorevic, who nominated him for the award, said that the potential of people who have a disability was often overlooked when it came to paid

Workers short-changed on super By Alesha Capone Workers in the Tarneit and Altona electorates are among the hardest hit in the state when it comes to unpaid superannuation. Figures from Industry Super Australia (ISA) have revealed Victorians are robbed of more than $1.4 billion in unpaid superannuation each year. ISA analysed Australian Tax Office data from 2016-17, which it says shows more than 800,000 Victorians have not received their

legal super entitlement. The Tarneit electorate ranked third in the state for unpaid super, with 13,375 workers underpaid by a total of $20.23 million (an average under-payment of $1512 per person). The Altona electorate ranked fourth-highest in the state, with 12,850 workers underpaid a total of $24.23 million (an average under-payment of $1885 per person). The Werribee electorate ranked 27th-worst, with 9620 workers underpaid a total of $13.90 million (average under-payment of $1444).

The ISA said while most employers do the right thing and pay workers their full super entitlement, some businesses “exploit legal loopholes and lax enforcement to short-change workers”. “An outdated law only requires super to be paid quarterly and not in line with pay cycles, meaning it is easy for payments to fall through the cracks,” the ISA said in a statement. “Some dodgy bosses don’t pay super at all, despite what it says on payslips. Sadly, there is little punishment meted out to those that

deliberately dud workers.” ISA deputy chief executive Matt Linden said the federal government should make all super payable on payday. “Across the state, almost a third of Victorian workers are having their super stolen, no area is immune. Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings, making a huge difference to their quality of life in retirement,” Mr Linden said. “With such little enforcement action taken against those responsible … it is time for Victoria’s federal and state politicians to act.”

Kids cook up clips Tarneit siblings Emily and Jacob are bringing their unique brand of humour to YouTube. The pair, aged 9 and 11, have posted three videos on their own YouTube channel which have attracted more than 700 views since last month. The videos star Emily and an alien puppet named Nugget, as her co-host. Jacob is both the puppeteer and voice of Nugget. In the videos, which teach youngsters about craft and cooking, Emily is the straight-talking presenter while Nugget provides the comedy. Jacob and Emily said they were inspired to start making YouTube clips after their father Robert showed them some old-fashioned comedic videos, such as Abbott and Costello. They pair said they were also inspired by their favourite YouTubers including LazarBeam, InquisitorMaster, Pewdiepie and stampylonghead. The brother and sister usually rehearse before filming and manage to create their videos in

one take, with the occasional re-take. Jacob said he and Emily were not expecting their videos to attract hundreds of views. “We thought 50 was a lot and the first video is over 400 now,” he said. During one of their videos, they make edible Yum Yum Balls. “Every time we paused for a moment, I would lick the spoon. Race honours a sailor

By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 30 boats from Hobsons Bay Yacht Club are expected to race to Wyndham Harbour in the Vice Commodores Cup, including Paul Neilson in his late father’s vessel. The race is part of the John Neilson series, named in honour of the respected HBYC sailor who died in June, 2018. Club vice commodore Paul Neilson will compete in the boat, De Ja Blue. “Dad was sailing for a good 40 years,” Mr Neilson said. “He had De Ja Blue for about 30 years of that and he pretty much won every race in Victoria – both ocean races and bay races.

Major works at the Dohertys-Fitzgerald intersection in Laverton North have been completed. The new intersection, at which a roundabout was replaced with traffic lights, was constructed as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said Dohertys Road carried up to 22,000 vehicles every day. “Dohertys Road is a critical link for the local community in Laverton North – and this upgrade will help people get where they need to go sooner and safer,” she said. The new intersection is one of five to be upgraded on Dohertys Road, between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade. Traffic lights will also be added to the intersection of Hume Road, and roundabouts will be built at Cherry Lane and Cyanamid Street. An upgrade at the Dohertys and Palmers roads intersection is underway, and is due for completion in early March. As well, drivers will benefit from an extra lane in each direction between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade. A new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians is being built over Dohertys Road as part of an upgrade to the Federation Trail. Details: bigbuild.vic.gov.au

Mr Neilson said it was a misconception that sailing was for the rich. “It is if you own the boat but if you’re just the crew it’s cheaper than playing cricket,” he said.

Eight residents of Powell Drive and adjacent streets have been appointed to a committee to work with and advise council on the subject of traffic management at Powell Drive. MY WYNDHAM This year is the World Health Organisation’s International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee’s general manager and director of clinical services, Libby Fifas, chats with Alesha Capone.

I’ve been in the role for a little over four months now. What do you enjoy most about working at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee? The people – without a doubt. Our staff are among the most committed, patient-focused team I’ve worked alongside. I’m also really enjoying living in Werribee. There is so much on offer, great places to eat, lots of activities to get involved with and a diverse local community who have been very welcoming. Did you work there previously in a different role, before becoming general manager and director of clinical services? I actually started my nurse management career at St Vincent’s Private in East Melbourne some 20 years ago. Since then I’ve had the privilege of working in both public and private health sectors across metropolitan and rural Victoria. My most recent role was as CEO at Stawell Regional Health. Returning to the St Vincent’s family feels very much like coming home. What are your main tasks as general manager

and director of clinical services? My role is ultimately responsible for ensuring patients accessing our broad range of clinical services (maternity, surgical, medical and rehabilitation) receive the highest possible quality care and an optimum patient experience. As the most senior nurse at St Vincent’s Private Werribee, the role encompasses the professional responsibility for our nursing and midwifery teams. Being the World Health Organisation’s International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, is there anything you would like to say to the community about the roles that nurses and midwives play in society? As a nurse, I’m delighted that the World Health Organisation has claimed 2020 as the year of the Nurse and Midwife. Nurses and midwives play a vital role in the provision of healthcare in acute, community and aged care settings. It is a pleasure to witness our team of talented St Vincent Private nurses and midwives delivering on our mission to provide compassionate and innovative care and enabling hope for those we serve. The World Health organisation predicts another nine million nurses will be needed to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

Spark missing as United falls By Lance Jenkinson Western United has lost its way in the second half of the A-League season. United has won just once in their past seven matches, free-falling to seventh on the ladder, four points outside the top six. In one of its most lifeless performances of the season on Sunday, United went down 1-0 to Brisbane Roar at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. United coach Mark Rudan cut a deflated figure after the game because he and his team are working hard during the week to regain their spark, but it is not translating to match days. Aside from three good chances in the first 12 minutes, all skied over the crossbar, United barely even threatened Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young, who had one of his easiest days at the office with the home side not registering a shot on target despite having the lion’s share of possession with 61 per cent. “I thought we were the better team in the first half, albeit not really getting a shot on goal, but we threatened, had a lot of the ball,” Rudan said. “They played a high line, we worked all week on making forward runs at the right times and who makes the forward runs, whether it be our 10s or our fullbacks who had the higher starting position. “We re-confirmed that message to the boys at half-time, yet we didn’t really see it. “That’s kind of what frustrated me the most is that we didn’t execute what we spoke about during the week and we worked on during the week as well.” Western United was brought undone by a sloppy error at the back by debutant Tomoki Imai in the 61st minute. By Lance Jenkinson Georgia Pistone has embraced the pressure of international shooting competition and underlined her potential as a future star in the sport. The 16-year-old from Hoppers Crossing turned heads with an impressive season in 2019, highlighted by her 12th-placed finish in the universal trench world championships against open-age opponents in France. She also took out a bronze medal in a team’s event. Pistone was understandably a little bit nervous about competing on the international stage, but she was certainly not overawed once she pulled her first trigger at the competitions. “It was nerve-racking going over there and representing Australia, but it feels good,” Pistone said. “There is a little bit of pressure, but you have to learn to deal with it. “When I wear my Australian jacket at competitions, I’m proud wearing it.” Pistone is eager to crack into the world top 10 this year. The Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club member has set her sights on representing Australia at the worlds again, this year in Italy. She is on track halfway through qualification, but still needs two big rounds to earn selection. “It will be the top three ladies selected, so I have to put in a good performance in the next two rounds,” Pistone said. “Where we’re shooting, I shoot well, so I’m pretty confident.” The other high priority event for Pistone in 2020 is the national championships. She is the defending Australian champion, so the rest of the field will be aiming to bring her down.

Baseball Werribee Giants played out an enthralling three-game top-of-the-table series with western suburbs rivals Williamstown Wolves in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 over the past week. All three games were decided by one-run margins, with the Giants taking games one (8-7) and two (2-1) before the Wolves claimed game three (13-12).

“I won it last year, so I’d love to go back-to-back,” Pistone said. “It definitely will be hard because there’s a lot of good lady shooters in the sport.” Pistone earned an Oceania gold medal with Australia B in the ISSF Olympic trap. The achievements only come Pistone’s way because she is willing to work hard, even though she is busy completing her studies at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. “There’s a lot of training,” she said. “I’m always down at Werribee practicing before big comps, so I’m ready to go.
